So this is actually the second post that I have made. I made one off the top of my head last night that was not great and this is more accurate. I have picked two potential options so far, to give context on what I want. Asus Zenbook 13 and Acer Swift 3. If those are great I would love to know, if there is better ones in that range, please let me know. Oh, and this will be for college. Thanks for reading.

Thin 13-14 inch 2 in 1 with decent amount of power

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:31 PM PDT

Looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that has the thinnest bezels I can get on a laptop. Preferably less then 15 inch screen size. Will be going to school for computer science so I would like something with a decent amount of power (i5/i7, 8gb ram+, 256ssd+) , not really any budget willing to pay if I can get what I am interested in. I would prefer a 14 inch over a 13.3 but would take it if there wasn't an other option.

Currently have a lenovo yoga 730 which overall has pretty thin bezels but I'm not a huge fan of the big bar on the bottom side. Been looking for a while but can't seem to find much smaller so either I'm looking in the wrong spots or it doesn't exist. Thanks for any help!

High end Laptop for Coding and Music Production (>€2000)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:58 PM PDT

Actually I have a desktop computer at home with two gorgeous 4K Dell monitors. That computer is getting older and buying new specs is getting always more expensive. So I decided to save off a decent amount of money for buying a good laptop and then selling my actual desktop. Thank you so much!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: €2000, Italy.

    • *Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply * Specifications, and battery.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too much, but I don't like very bulky and chunky laptops.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, if you can find a freedos PC it's better since I don't really need windows (that's not so important though)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15,6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Fl Studio/Ableton Photoshop Visual Studio Code MatLab Minecraft

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not too much involved in gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, fingerprint scanner, USB-c (if thunderbolt is better), NVme SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't really like tawdry RGB gaming laptop, usually because they are bulky. I like Thinkpad design.

Laptops for startup employees with v. Limited budget

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 04:19 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking to buy Windows 10 laptops for startup employees with limited budget. Primary use will be Microsoft office apps, and access to erp/accounting apps.

I'm considering a 250 USD budget (buying straight from wholesalers) and options are HP 255 G6 or HP 245 G5, or Lenovo IdeaPad 130. I'll probably pay to upgrade ram to 8GB on whichever model we obtain.

Which of the 3 do you suggest? And am I shooting my self in the foot by in getting these models instead of increasing the budget to 525 and getting a Lenovo E570 (or E470) instead?

    Thanks.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently looking for a new laptop to replace my current one and I wanted something that would be able to run new premium games, like metro exodus and upcoming cyberpunk 2077. I've looked into a couple laptops such as the Acer Predator Helios 300, which has an i7-9750H and GTX 1660Ti, and the Legion Y740, which has an i7-9750H and GTX 1660Ti or RTX 2060/2070 Max Q. I was trying to decide between the two when I heard about the RTX Supers coming out so I'm not sure if I should wait for those or pick one of the laptops I was looking at.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

RTX 2060 for 1440p external monitor gaming?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:18 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I upgrading my setup and was wondering if anyone has/knows about how a mobile rtx 2060 would run plugged into a 1440p monitor to play games. Im aware that performance is 30 percent lower than the desktop but looking at stats its close to the mobile gtx 1070. I can only get a laptop because i have little to no wifi at home and i absolutley need portability. I play singleplayer games a lot so when I'm at home I'd want to plug my laptop to a larger monitor. As the performance is close to that of a gtx 1070 mobile, im not sure if its practical to get good performance at 1440p with the mobile rtx 2060, NON max q version.

High CPU power laptop for school to replace a desktop.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:44 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around 1000$ USD United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't particularly care

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux(Absolutely must have linux support)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 or larger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. KiCAD, emacs, GCC, Clang, Kubernetes, QEMU, RS Vietnam, emulation, early to mid 00's games, various microcontroller/hardware simulators.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? RS Vietnam, Killing floor 2, emulation, early to mid 00's games, indies, GTA 5 sometimes. I need 60fps min

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good specs and good battery life are paramount. A nice keyboard would be nice, but I have my own peripherals.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking into XPS and thinkpads. I'd absolutely adore an AMD CPU over intel, but I can make sacrifices. My desktop at home is a ryzen 1600 and an rx480. And linux handles AMD gpu's much better than nvidia and I'd really prefer AMD over nvidia. I go to college every day, program, write, game, etc. Battery life should be excellent. I have no qualms to forcibly setting linux to set the CPU at min CPU clock to preserve battery.

I have an old X220 with the i7-2600U and I absolutely cannot stand how slow it is.

"Must" have an empty m.2 pcie slot available, I have one and a spare SATA SSD that'd I like to keep.

    Thanks!

Replacement for old laptop. 15"+, Aus, cheap (under 750)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 02:23 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 750 at most, Ideally under $500, Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer good specs, but a reasonable battery life is a close second.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Upwards of 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, KSP (on low), Plague Inc, FTL..

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I am happy to play on low settings with moderate FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I like a touchscreen, but not a deal breaker. 'Momentum' on the touchpad is ideal. A reliable modem.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am seeking to replace my old Acer Aspire V5. It had a GeForce 710M and a i7-3537U, and served me well, but got knocked off a counter by the cat and the screen is all smashed now.

It is mostly intended for typing and referencing documents/websites/playing music between charge, but with added versatility to play some games while travelling on flights or similar.

I additionally note that the information on the 'logical increments' list is currently 9 months old, and question how reflective it is of current standards.

Sleek Gaming Laptop for University... For approximately $850 (Computer Science)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 02:02 AM PDT

Going to University so I was thinking about grabbing a laptop that I could carry around and use. Majoring in Computer Science, and I wanted a laptop that I could study on and game on occasionally. Something that is not too loud and that I could take to class and use as an everyday laptop.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    USA, Hopefully around $850

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Would most likely prefer better specs on the laptop, with a decent battery life.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Pretty important, can't be too heavy, leaning towards a thinner laptop

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Probably 15.6

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Going to be running various programs for coding along with gaming

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Games such as league of legends, csgo, rust, modded minecraft, rocket league, I want to be able to run these games at least 60 FPS +

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** -I don't want the gamer aesthetics that comes with the general amounts of laptops (preferably), Good and comfortable keyboard and a build that would be able to last me for about 4 years +

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** -

I have been looking at some laptops online and here are some of the ones I have had my eyes on~~

    Legion Y530 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-legion-y530-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-1tb-hard-drive-black/6219200.p?skuId=6219200

I've been looking at this laptop a lot because of it's nice build and it's in my budget for a laptop. It has the ability to game and the only thing that concerns me is the battery (I heard it's not the best). $200 sale rn too!

I've also come across this one, https://www.walmart.com/ip/Dell-G5587-5542BLK-PUS-Laptop-15-6-FHD-Intel-i5-8300H-16GB-RAM-GTX-1060-256GB-SSD-1TB-HDD-Black/117583685?u1=&oid=223073.1&wmlspartner=6xJhMJDSy2I&sourceid=27136182373314164330&affillinktype=10&veh=aff

I believe this laptop is also a good deal, but am not sure about if the i5 would be any bad.

Any Laptop suggestions would be appreciated... Thank you!

    My external graphic doesn't work.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 12:20 AM PDT

I have an HP laptop, model number 15ay-105ne. It has 12 gb ram and 2 gb dedicated AMD graphics(R4 M440), processor 7200U, intel i7 7th gen. I added an ssd to my system and it is working fine. I also brought an asus Cerberus 1050ti oc edition, a 440w power supply(corsair), the gdc beast dock for the graphic card with mini pci-e adapter. NOW HERES THE PROBLEM!! I made all the connections from the smps to the dock, dock to pc pc to dock. All the connections were fine but I don't know how to change integrated graphics settings. Also when I turn the system on my monitor turns on but remains black and doesn't show anything on the display. But if i'm to switch switch off the grapgic card and then turn on the system it works perfectly well and doesn't have any issues. If I go into the settings and search for hardware changes no external graphic card is detected. I tried to install the nvidia driver software both automatically and manually but it won't complete without detecting the graphic card. And yes I also plugged the pc into an external monitor. Although i'm nit sure if the hdmi cable was faulty or if the setup still doesn't work. Someone help me here. In a moment of enthusiasm I went on and brought all this stuff and no matter what I do I can't seem to get the setup to work.

ASUS SCAR II and III Same price, but the II has a better GPU!

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:31 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm in Aus and I can buy both the Asus Scar II and III for the same price ($2,600 AUD)

The Scar II has an RTX 2070 Whereas the Scar III has an RTX 2060

They both have the same specs on paper otherwise.

Am I missing something here? Is there really anything better about the new generation, or is it better value to buy the older generation with a better GPU?

    Thanks

Hello! I'm from the Philippines so my options for laptops here are quite limited since I don't want to hassle myself with shipping. My budget is $1950 or 100,000 php. The laptop will only be used at home for gaming and school purposes.

After narrowing down my search, I've found 2 identical laptops with a $200 price difference.

    Work Laptop!

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:41 PM PDT

My 2013 Macbook Air is ready to break down just about any day now, so I'm looking out for a simple but reliable new laptop that ideally will last 5+ years, primarily for school and work.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm generally cheap, but I'm willing to invest a lot in a laptop if it'll last a long time. $1000 is about my max, but I'd love to stay under $500 if possible. Purchasing in the United States.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is a top priority.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? One of the most important factors - I travel a lot with my laptop and don't have a car, so it's a huge plus if it's easy to carry around while walking/biking.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any will do.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I have a slight preference for smaller size. I have an 11" at the moment and like that the laptop easily fits in almost any bag.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is a big plus. The rest aren't important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a Samsung phone, so it's a plus if that can sync with my laptop.

Please help me find a 2-in-1 for my kids' schooling

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:33 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $400, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. It must be a 2-in-1, with stylus capability (okay if I have to buy stylus separate from the $400 budget)

How important is weight and thinness to you? N/A

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or larger

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This is for my kids to use for school, play some old games (Portal 1 & 2, NES emulator, etc.), and do simple 2D art. My understanding is a UHD 620 will be enough, but a Vega 8 would be better?

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No hardcore gaming. Some old stuff like Portal 1 & 2, classic console emulators, etc.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm told the touchscreen must be at least an IPS screen with at least Full HD resolution for their art programs. Also, it needs at least 128 GB SSD, and at least 4 GB RAM (if it's upgrade, otherwise at least 8 GB of it's all soldered)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A family member gifted us money to buy two laptops, one for each child. They've been suffering at school without these.

They agreed to pay up to $400, which is a miracle. To be blunt, we are freaking poor.

I've seen units with these specs and better at Microcenter recently, but the closest one is over 4 hours away.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Notebook for coding/taking notes and light gaming

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:15 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $350 (can go a bit higher if i find a good deal) - Brazil.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specifications, but decent battery life is important too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not much.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows 10, but i have a license at home so there is no need for a OS out of the box.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I dont know about screen size, but for resolution im looking for 1080p @ 60Hz (i accept 120Hz too but i dont think thats reasonable for $350 lol).

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly light games like CSGO, Dota 2, Minecraft, Terraria, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2 and old console emulators (snes, n64 etc).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Games are listed above.

Most of them i wish to run at 1080p 60+ fps, except for CSGO which i play at 1024x768.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, touchpad, reliable build quality and a SSD (or at least the ability to install one).

I dont care about touchscreen, finger-print reader etc.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Most of the time ill be either running light games, using libre office, browsing with firefox or editing code (just editing, ill not be compiling anything on this laptop, so no need to worry about compiling speed/battery dying).

    Thanks!!!

    Comparing potential laptops

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 10:14 PM PDT

So I made an initial post here yesterday asking for sort of a place to start, and I have spent some time doing research tonight and wanted to hear from people who know better than I do. I am just going to be a college student who wants something that can what I need done and a bit of light gaming on top.

So I came down to options (so far): The Acer Swift 3 or the ASUS Zenbook 13.

Any help deciding or other options would be great, thanks for the help.

    Can HP Envy x360 (15.6" Ryzen 5 3500U or Ryzen 7 3700U) take 32GB (2x16GB) RAM?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 09:59 PM PDT

This HP forum answer in response to a question regarding 2500U guesses that it could on the basis that most recent HP laptops can take a notch over spec. But the 3500U and 3700U are a generation newer, yet whose service manual only lists up to 2x8GB for replacement parts. Did HP set a hard cap for the 2019 Envy Ryzen to push more expensive laptops?

This shows the 2017 Spectre Intel can do 2x16GB.

HP Envy 13t vs. Thinkpad T480

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:10 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am trying to decide between these two laptops.

Model HP Envy 13t Thinkpad T480
    Cost $1079.99 $1880
    Weight 2.9lbs 3.5 Lbs
    CPU i7-8565U i7-8650U
    RAM 16GB DDR4 16GB DDR 2400MHz
    Graphics Nvidia MX250 2GB RAM Nvidia MX150 2GB RAM
    Storage 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD 256 GB Solid State Drive, PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 M.2
    Battery 4-cell, 53 Wh Lithium-ion prismatic Battery Front Battery : 3 cell Li-Ion 24Wh, Rear Battery: 3 cell Li-Ion 24Wh

The Thinkpad has a lot more accessible and convenient ports, whereas the HP Envy does not. The HP Envy has a slightly better form factor as the trade-off.

I looked at reviews for thermal concerns on the HP Envy 13t but most reviews claimed it didn't have a thermal problem.

Anyone have experience with the HP Envy 13t? At work I have a T480s which I generally find to be extremely well built and good performance. I've never owned an HP laptop.

Any exciting deals for the 4th of July?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 09:47 PM PDT

I know we're a few hours away (here on the west coast anyway) — just curious if you guys have seen anything significant as far as deals go?

I'm looking to spend around $1250, but my personal quest aside, I'm really curious to see what's happening? Or if there are any rumors of anything big?

Just seems quiet on the interwebs?

2011 MacBook Pro finally crapped the bed, looking for a budget friendly PC laptop with half decent specs

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:40 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Preferably around $500 give or take, but happy to spend upwards of $700 for the right deal. I live in WA Australia and will be purchasing from inside AUS.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I have no interest in fancy gimmicks like touch screen or tablet mode, I just want a solid laptop with good specs.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I've been lugging around a 2011 Macbook Pro for the last 3 years so I have no issue with weight lmao. I don't mind about size/weight at all.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. I do not want another Macbook.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Have been using 13" for the last few years so I am fine with anything fine with 13" and larger.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I won't be running any hardcore software, but would like to be able to play games.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Anything that can run games like Civ 6 and CS:GO, nothing too graphically intense, but I still want good performance.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Specs. All I care about is decent specs for the price.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Not looking to break the bank, but I really want a laptop that I won't feel like I need to upgrade from in 12 months time. Thanks for reading :)
