Android Auto new UI rolling out, got it on one phone, it's... meh (Mazda3 no touchscreen, rotary dial)

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 07:37 PM PDT

I just got it on my Pixel 2 XL on Pie, Play Services 18.3.81. I had to uninstall and reinstall AA 4.5 though which I got earlier today on the Play Store. I don't have it on my Pixel 3 on Pie which is still on Play Services 17.7.85, so that might have something to do with it. Both are on the same Google account. I also have a Pixel 1 on Q5 with Play Services beta 18.7.14 and it's not showing anything either.

Someone else has already posted that they got it, and then also posted a video. Someone else also apparently got it and posted a screenshot of the new settings that appear: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidAuto/comments/cjdfk4/update_seems_to_be_rolling_out_now/evd2lkg/

My first impressions is that losing the quick at-a-glance information of the cards kinda sucks. The Mazda has Home, Music and Maps shortcut buttons in the middle console, and these work fine, just like before. But now the Home screen is just an app drawer. I don't know what order they're in, probably order of usage. But having the apps in a list by categories was better IMO. The app drawer is just messy and if you have many AA compatible apps it will take you some hard visual processing to find the one you want, especially if you're scrolling with a wheel,

The missing weather card and the notification screens are also worse than before. Now you have one shortcut for weather, one for news and one for calendar. These also are mixed up with the other icons in the Home screen. Weather and Calendar has Assistant read them to you. It's extremely clunky and a lot more cumbersome to have to go to the Home screen and scroll to those specific icons among all the other apps. Even with a touch screen it seems a lot of work for something that was available at a glance.

The notification screen is also something that may be just one tap away, but with the scroll wheel it becomes a tilt-down motion, then scroll to it and then click. All this info was available at a glance before with just one click of the Home shortcut.

All in all, not too thrilled with this update, I had some apprehension about it when I saw it because Mazda doesn't enable the touch screen, and this confirmed it. Oh well.

Edit: just got it on my Pixel 3 by disabling/enabling and updating again.
