Posted: 30 Jun 2019 09:39 AM PDT Even on a powerful computer, it'll take more time for Windows to search for a filename in a small folder than it would take SearchEverything to find it on my entire hard disk. Come on MS, you can do it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:28 PM PDT I just installed Windows XP on an old PC, for retro-gaming purposes. My issue is getting the latest updates. My media was service pack 2, and the installer for SP3 fails to extract with a "file is corrupt" error when it is nearly finished extracting files. This was directly from Microsoft and I downloaded it 3 times with the same issue. So I downloaded it from another website, but it matches a SHA-1 integrity check with the one from Microsoft and fails with the same issue. Tried installing a Windows Installer update to 3.1 v2, no change, updated to Windows Installer 4.5, no change. Hoping someone here will have an idea how to get beyond this issue. In addition, is there any place to get an update rollup to the final updates before support stopped? [link] [comments]
Do you know of any app that can add cpu/gpu/etc. temp as a live tile to start menu? Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:24 PM PDT Looking something that would let me check that sort of thing easily. Neither Steam or Gamebar provide such a feature, so I'm looking elsewhere. I am currently using speedfan to check temps, but it's cumbersome (for one, it starts up too slow). [link] [comments]
can I use my windows 7 home product key to activate windows 10 home? Posted: 30 Jun 2019 07:32 PM PDT so i changed my motherboard last year and until now I didn't mind having my windows not activated because windows 10 pro was installed whereas before i was using windows 10 home. But before I changed my motherboard I upgraded from windows 7 home to windows 10 using "get windows 10" button before. Im planning to install a windows 10 home and was wondering if i can use the windows 7 home premium key that i was using before. thanks [link] [comments]
Max paths length question, 3rd party explorer with actual support Posted: 30 Jun 2019 07:11 PM PDT I don't quite get it. I've been organizing my music with mp3tag (tagging, renaming) and when I wanted to copy a directory with Windows Explorer I got a "couldn't find this item" on several files. After reading around I found that it's because of the MAX_PATH limit of 260 characters. They make it sound like this is an unsolvable issue that will be with us for the rest of eternity but there are already programs that are absolutely fine with it.
For example mp3tag, WinRAR, RapidCRC and foobar have no problems opening, renaming and operating with files with long paths/names (the only limitation with foobar is the converter, it cannot have a long path as destination, but it can as source). Others are mixed, PotPlayer can open a file inside a long path, but drag and drop the long path folder that contains it and it doesn't work. Bulk Rename Utility can change filestamps, but nothing that involves renaming on long paths.
In fact, opening files behind long paths isn't a problem. Create a file inside a super duper long path with WinRAR, navigate to it with Windows Explorer, open it in Notepad and it works. It's renaming and creating were the issue is. If something as stupid as WinRAR or mp3tag can, why can't MS fix their stupid file explorer to work with long paths? "A WINRAR IS YOU", ironic but true.
Additionally, anyone knows of a 3rd party (free/libre/open source) that handles long paths fine? Someone mentioned One Commander, but the support is lousy at best. When pasting or renaming a file inside a long path you have to refresh the panel to reflect the changes. Cut a file from a long path into another long path and you end up with those old ABCDEF~2 style file names. Delete a file and it just greys it out, it doesn't delete. Total Commander was mentioned but I'd like a free alternative. [link] [comments]
After upgrading Windows 10 Home to Pro using the Microsoft Store my copy is no longer Activated. Posted: 30 Jun 2019 04:16 PM PDT I tried using the Troubleshooter but it just says it can't activate my copy. I tried manually putting the key in that I have on Amazon, where I bought Windows 10 Home. Just says the key isn't correct. Under System is says I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise, but the order in the email says Windows 10 Pro. [link] [comments]

Error 0xc1900101 when updating from 1809>1903? Posted: 30 Jun 2019 03:24 PM PDT My PC can download and start the update without any issues. It restarts, loads for maybe 5-10 minutes, then reboots like 5 times without getting into Windows, and then finally ending up on the "Undoing changes to your computer", where the entire update is reversed. I've followed multiple guides online, but none seem to actually resolve the issue. Has anyone else encountered this issue when updating or knows how to solve it? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Jun 2019 05:44 AM PDT Somehow overnight Friday my product key went missing/bad. Saturday Morning I found a watermark in the bottom right corner asking me to activate windows. I tried entering the key again and windows tells me that it is not valid. The PC was purchased built from eBay last September and the builder is not responding to questions from me. Venus 0.1.6 - Set random wallpapers from Unsplash.com Posted: 29 Jun 2019 08:50 PM PDT Venus is a cross-platform tool I wrote to set random wallpapers from Unsplash, which started as a Linux project, but since it's written in Python, it didn't take much to add multi-platform support. As of release 0.1.6 it now also has support to set an interval to change the wallpaper in the config file every X amount of seconds. To install: To run: Feature requests, comments, and insults are welcomed. [link] [comments] |
