    Simple Questions - May 16, 2019

    Posted: 16 May 2019 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Build for Oldschool RuneScape, discord, Google chrome

    Posted: 16 May 2019 02:22 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

A secondly pc for when friends come over. It would be able to run Oldschool runescape (Runelite client), Discord, Google Chrome

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    • Able to run Runelite, discord and Google Chrome at the same time.
    • Oldschool Runescape is a game that runs off the processor so I'm thinking a graphics card might not even be needed.
    • Potentially support 2 monitors (~21")

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    < ~$120 for the pc

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    • Someone suggested a refurbished Dell Optiplex with a i5 and add a GTX 750 Ti. However I'm open to any other suggestions.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    • I'm looking to purchase used parts/components/partial already completed builds
    • I'm not sure of a good way to determine what I would need to run all these applications. Would looking at recommended specs for all of the applications be a good idea?

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

would be an upgrade to my current gtx 1050 2gb

    thx for any help

(~$1500) Brand new to building, replacing a many year old prebuilt, have two build ideas from others and looking for feedback/other ideas

    Posted: 16 May 2019 06:23 AM PDT

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

I will admit I skimmed them!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming and chrome. Right now I only really play League of Legends and Rocket League but that's mostly because it's the only thing my current computer can handle. Even WoW is cumbersome. Looking to play AAA games at max/ultra settings for a couple years, maybe? I've never experienced gaming above 60 FPS. Don't NEED to see 120 fps, 144hz, 1440p glory, but if we can swing it or near it, sweet!

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

See above - computer will be a gaming and Facebook machine.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Honestly, it's pretty fluid. I need to check my current monitors but I'm fairly confident they'll need replaced, so with that in mind I'm looking honestly anywhere in the ballpark of 1-2k, with a focus on nearish 1.5k USD. If i got near 2k it would have to include 2 new monitors (although only one needs to be for "gaming", I guess?), and all other peripherals.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United States, and I'm within a couple miles of the Columbus. OH Microcenter.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I've had two builds recommended to me thus far and I'm looking for pros/cons/all out alternative build ideas.

    Help - No Display

    Posted: 16 May 2019 01:45 PM PDT

So I've got the components and everything assembled with my computer. I plug everything in, am set up and prepared to install Windows, but there is no display on the monitor. I hope that I have only done something stupid and easily fixable, but I am not sure what. I have tried using the video output ports on both the Motherboard and the Graphics card.

To my knowledge, I have plugged in power for every component, and everything appears to be up and functional (fans spin, LED's on the mobo come on, lights on the case front panel turn on, etc.). Everything should be (to the best of my knowledge) compatible with each other.

Does anyone know what I may have done wrong, or what may be the issue here?

    Parts List:

MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC MOBo

    Ryzen 5 2600 CPU

    2x8gb 3600mHz DDR4 V-Color Skywalker RAM

    Seasonic Focus+ 80+ 550W Fully Modular PSU

    Radeon RX480 4gb(Sapphire) GPU

    256gb m.2 drive for Storage

First-time build proposal. Upgrading from PS4. About $800 budget. Help appreciated.

    Posted: 16 May 2019 10:05 AM PDT

Edit: These responses are really making my day! Thanks! I am at work but will respond as downtime allows it, really pumped at these helpful suggestions.

Hi all, I'm going to be building my first PC to upgrade from PS4 gaming. I just want a solid step up at a price I can afford (US $800-ish.) I could really use some experienced eyes on my proposed build. Any help, and since I'm a newbie trying to learn, any explanations of what makes a better choice and why would be sincerely appreciated. My goals:

    • Gaming at 60fps at 1080p on High settings for the average game up to 2019, and Medium to High settings for most games from now through the next few years (I'm not worried about extremely demanding cases like, say, Anthem or Kingdom Come: Deliverance; I'd like to play Sekiro at 60fps, for instance)

    • 60fps is my top performance priority

    • Budget is a concern--I'm shooting for the best value for around $800

    • I chose what looks like a decent power source because I think the extra $20 is probably worth it, any input is welcome

I’d like to get a new gaming mouse and keyboard, looking for recommendations

    Posted: 16 May 2019 11:00 AM PDT

I'm thinking really small budget right now. I don't make much, but my mouse and keyboard are pretty old and getting worn out. Id like to order through Amazon as I have access to prime. I've seen a few combos for ~$30, some closer to ~$50, but not from companies I'm familiar with. I see a lot of Redragon and a few other companies I'm unfamiliar with.

Budget wise, it would be great to keep it under $30, but I'm probably able to go up to about $50 if it's really worth it.

Any and all suggestions truly appreciated. Thank you!

    RGB Fan

    Posted: 16 May 2019 02:50 PM PDT

    Greetings everyone!

Since my Pc case supports two 140mm case fans as an output on top, I'd like toput two RGB ones there. Now i am on the search of RGB fans that also look good from behind, like having an additional led ring at the back. Does anyone know some that look good from behind, when I see them through the top dust filter?

is 2700x worth it over 2700

    Posted: 16 May 2019 11:41 AM PDT

as title says, is it worth the extra ~$65 for the 2700x? i might overclock a little bit, but i don't know that much about it so there's a good chance i won't. i plan to use it for primarily gaming, and might stream here and there. most played games are fortnite and overwatch. i have a 144 hz monitor so i wanna try and get at least a constant 130 fps i have a 1070 16 gb 2400 mhz overclocked to 2666 ryzen 5 1500x

With the 3000 series releasing in Q3 of 2019, I want to build a pc after exams (June) as I'm getting bored of console and want to join the master race, but I don't know if I want to wait for the 3000 series or not as I would prefer to build in June and upgrade in a few years maybe.

Some initial questions I have are: 1. Is the i5 9700k sufficient or will I see a notable uptick in performance with newer i7 CPU?

    1. I've heard mixed opinions on air vs water cooling. Is water cooling a worthwhile upgrade with a full tower case?

    2. I won't be able to run an Ethernet cable so is the PCIe network adapter my best option over a WiFi capable motherboard?

Thanks for any and all feedback

My newly built pc is skipping frames!

    Posted: 16 May 2019 01:43 PM PDT

I just built my first gaming PC today. When I booted it for the first time, it turned on and I installed Windows(dont have key yet). I updated the Windows until there was nothing left. Then I downloaded the AMD driver but it continues to skip frames and it is more obvious when I watch a video on Youtube or Twitch. I tried to change the place of the HDMI in the GPU but no change. Tried also to change the HDMI port in my monitor but no change. It might be my monitor (Asus 22T1E) which is old. Could anyone help me please?

Bought a used ASUS Prime z270-A and it seems to have these smallish holes throughout the board. Is this normal?

I think my Thermaltake PSU is Frying Components... what are my options?!

    Posted: 16 May 2019 01:38 PM PDT

I cannot seem to find the troubleshooting template. Yikes. So I am posting this as best I can from memory.

Alright, so I think my Thermaltake power supply is making components in my PC build "poof" up. I am building this PC for a friend of mine; and I've already gone overbudget making this "CPU exploit-minimal and PSP-free PC".

Note:All cables utilized are the ones that originally came with this particular PSU.

    Brief History

    • Tested all components; checked UEFI and everything was present.
    • Attempted to install Windows 10 -- at 99% the Windows install would fail with an error message stating the install media was corrupt (USB 3.1 drive)
    • Created new install media - same error (USB 2.0 drive)
    • Both install USBs worked fine on a different disk
    • Used Darik's boot disk to 0 SSD --- speed dropped from 30mb/s to 3b/s before erroring out over the course of 12-24 hours.
    • Tested one drive at a time:
    • Samsung Evo 840 120GB SSD (reported as a 0mb disk)
    • Western Digital 500GB HDD (not detected)
    • Seagate 4000TB disk from my other build (not detected)
    • Crucial MX300 1TB SSD from my other build (not detected)
    • Cables are all original cables from the PSU per buildapc guides
    • Fan speeds in UEFI being reported as 625,000 RPM
    • Eventually plugged in a 250GB Western Digital HDD which "poofed up in smoke and flame"
    • I then determined either a power supply cable and/or the PSU itself "is bad" (its less than a year old)

Note: None of the drives are recognized by any other PCs

    Concluding Questions

    • Do I have any options with Thermaltake to prevent myself from biting a loss on all the parts?
    • Will renter's insurance cover the cost of the parts going up in smoke?

Building First PC - $800 Budget

    Posted: 16 May 2019 11:54 AM PDT

    Hello!

I need help with the build of my first PC. My budget is $800 and this PC will be used for gaming and casual use (emails, Netflix, etc.) The games played will be WoW Classic and shooters like Apex Legends. A friend that recently built pointed me in the direction of http://www.logicalincrements.com/ to look at a tier list of the individual pieces. I went ahead and mostly picked parts within the "very good" category. I plan to have 2 monitors hooked up, the main being a 144hz 1080p, while the other being a budget option to serve as a separate screen for things like Spotify while gaming.

    Any help is appreciated! https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MqXsdX

My first PC with all-new parts (with backstory of PC building)

    Posted: 16 May 2019 01:57 AM PDT

Sorry if this is too long or anything, but I really wanted to share my PC building story over the years with this subreddit. Anyways, heregoes:

I have always been a computerphile, I remember being about 7-8 years old in the 2nd grade and having a family friend donate us a Windows 3.1 computer and being completely mesmerized with how it worked. I also remember taking it apart one day and experimenting moving around some wires on the inside (which in retrospect I'm pretty sure were panel headers and IDE cables). I remember putting it back together, turning it back on and smelling burning plastic, I opened the PC again to find that some of those wires I was moving around had burned up and the PC no longer worked. After that, my parents told me I wasn't allowed to mess with computers anymore, and that's probably when my addiction to PCs started. All I wanted was to figure out how to fix that Windows 3.1 computer and play with it though I never did.

My first dive into PC gaming didn't come until about 2005 when another family friend donated us an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ PC. I remember it was a beige box and I thought it was so cool because it had a blue LED case fan on the side panel. I also remember the SUPER ANNOYING whiny high-pitched sound the stock AMD cooler made. I hadn't yet had a silent PC and had no idea what I was missing. I bought and installed an ATI Radeon 9600XT from the guy that gave us the PC, along with a bunch of games he no longer wanted. That's when my gaming phase on PC started. I remember playing Half-Life 2 and beating it and thinking "OMG this is nothing like the consoles I was used to gaming on."

I went on to play many other games on that PC like the original Far Cry, Jedi Academy, Knights of the Old Republic, Garry's Mod, GTA: San Andreas, StarCraft, Spore, the Sims 2 etc. I also spent massive amounts of time on Myspace and AIM. I played whatever I had the money to play, but one day the games that were coming out no longer ran on the PC. I remember trying to run Crysis on the PC but it required that I had to upgrade to Windows Vista; needless to say, Windows Vista didn't run well AT ALL on that PC, as you can imagine. I tried upgrading from 512MB of RAM to 1GB, but the PC just wasn't cutting it anymore.

So for awhile I moved away from PC gaming until my grandmother got a new PC with some money she unexpectedly inherited. It was an HP Pavilion Elite with an Intel Core 2 Quad, 6GB of RAM, and an Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT. This was around 2008 and at the time this thing was A BEAST. I finally got to play Crysis, Far Cry 2, Rainbow Six: Vegas, and many of the more advanced games that were coming out at the time. I was LOVING it. There weren't many games that it couldn't play. One day I convinced my grandmother that the stock HP case that the PC was in didn't have enough airflow, and I got her to buy a brand new case and PSU. I transplanted all of the guts from the HP into an NZXT M59 Classic mid-tower case I found on Newegg, which by today's standards isn't the most attractive case, but at the time I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It did have great airflow, in it's defense. I hooked it up and tricked it out with 2x green/blue 140mm fans, a blue cold cathode, and had my first go at cable management. From that point on, that PC was my BABY. I spent hours upon hours upon hours enjoying that PC.

Then in January of 2014, I got a call while I was at work, informing me that the apartment my family was living in was ON FIRE. Showed up on the scene and my family was on the street gawking at the blaze as firefighters were dousing the house with water. The firefighters put a tarp over my PC in an attempt to keep it from getting wet or burning, they also told me to come back later to get it because it wasn't safe to enter the apartment. The upstairs neighbor's apartment burnt to a crisp, but in my apartment the ceiling was caving in and crumbling from the weight of the water upstairs. Almost everything in the apartment was soaked. I walked across the street to my other neighbor's house to make calls and figure out what to do about everything. Considering that my house was pretty much destroyed and I no longer had a place to live, my PC was the LAST thing on my mind. After an hour or so, I went back across the street to try to salvage what was left from the fire. Upon walking inside the apartment I was HEARTBROKEN to find that my PC was COMPLETELY GONE. Someone from the neighboring apartment complex had snuck into my apartment and stole my PC, along with 2 HDTVs and some game systems. As if my house burning down already wasn't enough bad luck, some heartless individual had to steal my stuff too... Nice. (Side Note: We came to find out later that the reason the apartment caught fire was because one of my adjacent upstairs neighbors tried to DRY THEIR CLOTHES IN THE OVEN!!! IDIOTS!!! LMAO!!!)

I was 20 years old at the time, but I would be lying if I said I didn't cry when I finally sat down and thought about all of the memories I had with that PC. That PC was also used as the family media center; Many hours were spent together daily with my grandmother, sister, mother, father, and friends watching movies, funny YouTube videos, and listening to our favorite songs on that PC. I have fond memories of showing my grandmother how to find and install DreamScenes (Basically native WallpaperEngine if you know what that is) on Windows 7. She spent hours upon hours of her days putting together a collection of all of her favorite DreamScenes from the internet, and that was something she was so passionate about and I've never seen her happier about something. I also ripped all of her favorite CDs onto the PC and I showed her how to maintain a library on WinAmp and I remember her face lighting up when I showed her how to play her music with the visualizations in Winamp. She loved that computer as much as I did. Now that my grandmother is in a nursing home, those experiences I had with her showing her how to use that PC is something I will never get back. My entire family mourned the loss of that PC.

After that, no one in my family really had the money to build or buy a new PC, so we relied on family or friends to donate us a computer. Someone sold me a mediocre Toshiba laptop for $50, it was basically a web-browsing/Netflix/YouTube machine and was never able to play many newer games. I could play CounterStrike: Source if I wanted to, but it wasn't worth the stutter or low-quality. That was my daily driver up until late 2015 when my sister spilled a whole glass of Kool-Aid on it and fried it. I went back to gaming on an Xbox 360 and forgot all about PC gaming.

At some point my dad gave me a Compaq Laptop with a keyboard that stopped working, hoping that I could get it working again. I wasn't able to get the built in keyboard to work again, but I was able to use it with a wireless keyboard/trackpad and used it as my daily driver until 2017.

The old Compaq Laptop I was using had a single-core 2GHz Celeron processor and only 2GB of RAM. The only way to make it half-usable back then was for me to install lubuntu linux on it and even then it still chugged doing menial tasks like loading Gmail or watching YouTube. It was painful but it was all that I had. Most of the time I'd just use my smartphone, as it was better than the laptop.

Near the end of 2017, I got a pretty good paycheck from my new job, and I had long been debating making an upgrade. I was seriously tired of having to use that terribly slow laptop to do ANYTHING computer related. I had about $400-500 to work with to get a new PC. After watching hundreds of YouTube videos, in October of 2017 I decided to bite the bullet on an old used 2011-era workstation from eBay. I bought a Dell Optiplex 790 minitower with an i7-2600, 8GB of RAM, and a corrupted hard drive for about $150. Used the leftover money I had to buy an EVGA 1050 Ti and a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD. A month later I also upgraded from 8GB to 16GB of RAM. Thankfully this was right before the GPU cryptomining price-hike so I spent maybe $150 on the GPU, $80 on the SSD, and $50 on the RAM; about $430 total for the machine.

I loved this little Optiplex, it was a MAJOR upgrade from the laptop I had been using for the past few years and it truly re-ignited my love for PC gaming and being a PC enthusiast in general. I was finally able to play games again. I only had a crappy 15" 900p 60Hz monitor at the time, so the 1050 Ti ran everything Ultra/High @60FPS flawlessly. I was able to play PUBG back when it was still in beta and it blew me away. I got addicted to Kerbal Space Program, Universe Sandbox, Minecraft, GTA V, Rocket League; and I was also also able to revisit some of the games I remembered playing on the old PC that was stolen in the fire. It was awesome re-living some of those memories.

A few months later, a family friend gave me an old Intel Extreme DZ77RE-75K motherboard they had laying around collecting dust. After some quick research I realized that I could put the i7-2600 from the Optiplex on this board. So after saving up a couple paychecks and pondering the decision for a couple weeks as I typically do... I decided to do something special. In loving memory of the PC that was stolen in the fire, I went on eBay and found a new-in-box unopened NZXT M59 Classic case (was hard and expensive to find, NZXT doesn't make these anymore), the same Green LED 140mm fans, a PSU, and a blue cold-cathode; all the same parts that I used when I transplanted the parts from the HP computer back in 2008. This PC was the spiritual successor to the computer that was stolen from me and my family in the fire. It looks literally exactly like it (except a little better). (Picture of the PC: https://imgur.com/B3wfxe7)

After awhile I upgraded it further from the stock i7-2600 to a i7-2600k and figured out how to overclock it to 4.5GHz. I also installed a Hyper 212 EVO and faster RAM. In October after much pondering I also upgraded from the 1050 Ti to a 1070 Ti. The PC was (and still is) AMAZING. I still have this PC and I will NEVER get rid of it. It has too much sentimental value to me. I learned from the past mistake, and I installed Prey (kinda like lojack) on it just in case it ever gets stolen again I might be able to find it.

However... After a bit of time I started to get an itch that I couldn't scratch. I kept reading and reading and learning more about the current state of PCs. I realized even though the i7-2600k is still a pretty good processor.. it still has it's issues with stutter and will be outdated sooner rather than later. I had also been seeing how people had the blazing fast M.2 NVMe drives.. 1440p.. g-sync panels.. RGB.. liquid cooling.. DDR4.. ray-tracing.. etc..

I wanted it, I wanted all of it. I wanted to finally build my own, modern and up-to-date PC from scratch instead of doing these transplants like I had been doing. I just didn't have the money to do it. Then in December I get the call from my boss telling me that I will be going to Atlanta for a whole month on January and some of February to set up the Super Bowl Experience and TailGate party. Needless to say I made some BANK and by the time I got home I also had my income tax refund, so I finally had some money to blow.

I had been doing research for months prior and it came down to 2 options:

    1. Go balls to the wall and build an i9-9900k system and possibly have to wait a month or two until I got paid again to have all of the parts to build the PC
    2. Get a Ryzen 7 2700x and have the whole PC built within the week

After much deliberation and some rational conversations in a Tech Deals discord server, I ended up settling on a Ryzen 7 2700x and x470 mobo combo, intelligently banking on the upgrade path to Zen 2 in the near future.

At first I wasn't going to do an all-RGB build to keep the price lower... but after buying an RGB board... and then h100i RGB Platinum... and then 16gb of RGB RAM.. I knew it was too late and I found myself hypnotized by the RGB. So now the whole build is RGB lmao.

I got the NVMe drive I had been dreaming and drooling about, and eventually also splurged on another regular M.2 SSD, and 16GB more of RGB RAM, totalling 32GB.

Started off the PC with my 1070 Ti (the only used part in the whole build), but eventually sold the 1070 Ti to upgrade to an RTX 2070. (Plz don't flame me I know this wasn't the smartest decision in the world but ayyyy RTX ON). Now that I also had an EPIC graphics card I realized my limitation was my 60Hz monitor, I had all of this horsepower in my machine but wasn't even really getting to use most of it. So a midnight shopping spree yielded a 27" 1440p 144hz G-sync Dell monitor. This was my first experience with a refresh rate higher than 60hz and also my first experience with a resolution higher than 1080p... and having it all together at once... OMG. I AM A BELIEVER. 1440p and high refresh rate is THE WAY TO GO.

However, I also realized that the 2070 wouldn't be able to handle every game at 1440p/144hz so I also got a Dell 27" 1080p/144hz panel. I haven't really used the 1080p monitor much because the 2070 still runs most of the games I play at 1440p/60+fps. Even with RTX On in Battlefield V the 2070 still gets 60fps+, I haven't tried it on the 1080p monitor yet but I guess I'll give it a try in the next few days and see how it does. After using this 1440p monitor so long though, the 1080p monitor looks so PIXELATED. I never noticed it before but I feel like maybe I've ruined any future 1080p experiences by having this 1440p monitor.

But anyways... I just spent WAY TOO LONG WRITING THIS. But hopefully it was an interesting read to some of you idk. This is my experience with PCs and PC gaming lmao.

TL;DR: Kid grows up with lot of secondhand PCs Kid has memories using PCs with family Kid recreates PC in memory of grandmother Kid as an adult spends waaaay too much money, builds his first PC from scratch, loves it anyway The end

Built my PC, it turns on, but there’s no output to my monitor.

    Posted: 16 May 2019 01:21 PM PDT

So, I put my build together and it turns on but I have no hdmi output to my monitor. Both ends of the hdmi are plugged into the computer and the monitor and I'm sure my monitor is on the right input but I'm not receiving any signal. Any help?

    Converting memory to ram

    Posted: 16 May 2019 03:22 PM PDT

I have heard talk on the internet of converting storage to ram and I want to learn more. Is there a flat rate (i.e I convert a 2tb storage drive to ram, do I now have 2tb of ram?) Will it be slower than normal? Also I am very, very new to PC building if that helps.
