    Simple Questions - May 12, 2019

    Posted: 12 May 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

How do I get started on PC building?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 07:04 AM PDT

I'm 13, I really want a PC because in tired of playing on console. I have a laptop but its really just for school. How do I get started on building a cheap PC? Like really cheap.

I have an HDD on my laptop (model below) and I want to replace it with an SSD (model below). is this a worthwhile upgrade, or should I just buy a pc considering I want to play games without my laptop going into meltdown?

Is this a good CPU upgrade?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 07:00 AM PDT

    Hey guys.

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU but I'm thinking that in order to do that I will probably need to upgrade my motherboard too since it doesn't seem to fit many good CPU's that I can upgrade too.

My current motherboard is an ASRock B150M Pro4 with Socket 1151 and my current CPU is intel i5-6500 3.2ghz.

After exploring my options a bit i've found what I believe is my best option but im coming here for a second opinion because I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff and I feel like im probably overlooking a better option lol.

Here is what I think is my best option:

    Buy this motherboard "MSI AM4 MicroATX B450M PRO-VDH"($100 AUD / $70 USD) https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450M-PRO-VDH.html

    and this CPU "AMD AM4 Ryzen 7 2700" ($303 AUD / $212 USD) https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-7-2700

What do you guys think? Is this good or is there a better option for a similar price? Ideally I want to spend about $410 AUD ($290USD) but if its really worth it I'd be willing to spend about $500ish AUD ($350USD).. maybe more if it seems really worth it but ehh.

Probably not needed but here are my full specs right now: PCPartPicker Part List

    LGA1150 Motherboard

    Posted: 12 May 2019 08:28 AM PDT

    Hey Guys,

    I have an i5-4440 and a Radeon RX 570.

My motherboard has stopped working and I am currently looking for a new MicroATX one that supports LGA1150.

Does anyone know where I could find one for a reasonable price? (I'm in Canada)

What gpu do i buy for 1080p 60fps gaming, that'll last me a few years?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 07:54 AM PDT

I have a 280x right now, but the fans are starting to break, so i need an upgrade, i still only play on 1080p , 60 fps.

the first game i'm looking forward to is borderlands 3, so i could wait a little if threre are better options coming.

i have a I5 4670k , idk if that will create a bottleneck. What card would u recomend?

EDIT:thank u all for ur help, i think the best thing to do is wait for the new amd gpu's see what they do with that, and otherwise i'm going for a 1660 ti or 2060

I'm going to buy some new 120mm fans but I don't know which ones

    Posted: 12 May 2019 09:39 AM PDT

As title, my pc is running a little hotter as the summer is coming so I'd like to buy some new fans for my case since it's an upgrade I've wished for long. My case is the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M and it comes with 2 140mm fans (1 on the front and 1 on the back).

I don't know a lot about fans, I'm looking at Pure Wings 2 by Be Quiet! but I'm not totally convinced about it, I'm not going to spend 20€ each so please no Noctua here (even if I know Redux series is cheaper)

Giant thank you to everyone here, just finished building my first PC!

    Posted: 12 May 2019 03:03 PM PDT

Thank you everyone for your knowledge and help, I really appreciate everything. I read up on this board over several months, and with some assistance through the building process, just finished building my first computer! Feels great!

What are some post build things I should be keeping an eye out on? I looked in the bios and saw my CPU was hovering around 32C which seemed good from what I was reading online (Ryzen 5 2600). I'm thinking about updating some drivers but don't know what else I should be checking out or benchmarking (or even where to do it)

Only other thing that I observed while digging around in my bios. The ram I have is the Adata Gammix D10 3000 frequency ram. In my bios it lists the memory frequency as 2667MHz. It sounds like I need to do something to bring it up to 3000?

    GPU in PCIE slot 2.

    Posted: 12 May 2019 11:22 AM PDT

I've been struggling with keeping all my parts compatible. I bought MSI Z390-A Pro, I7 9700k, Noctua DH-15 and G.skill RAM 8GBx2 to upgrade my PC.

So the issue is that I can't fit my RAM sticks under my Noctua in dual channel mode, because the fan obstructs slots B1 and B2. So I came across a few possible solutions, but they all have their own drawbacks.

I could move the fans a few notches up on the heat sink then I can fit the RAM, but I will be unable to close the case. So it's a no go. I'd have to buy a new case to make it work, not really preferable.

I could remove one of the fans that's blocking the B1 and B2 ports. People say that I will not experience any significant increase in temps, but I'm having a hard time believing this.

I could rotate the Noctua to exhaust at the top. Drawbacks: the back most fan is 95% obstructed by the GPU, so I have to move the GPU to the 2nd PCIE slot, which is not recommended by the manual. (Currently running this setup)

I could just run in single channel mode, at the cost of performance.

Do I have any other options? What should I do? I can splurge some more money, but I'd like to try free options first.

First PC, nervous to committing to a list. Don't need suggestions, I know this list is a bit overkill, but I just want to know if this could run 1080p 144hz smoothy. I'm gonna upgrade to 1440 later

    Need help with a PC!

Planning on building a new PC before I go to college, how's this look for 144 FPS?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 02:33 PM PDT

I want to part-time stream, and I'm also on my college's eSports team, so I'd like a PC that I can practice on in my own time as well as play casually. How's this look? The game I'll be playing for eSports is Fortnite (even though the game is crap right now) but it's intended purpose will just be to casually game.

    Average temperature 90-105°C (194-221°F) AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X

    Posted: 12 May 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Earlier I made a post about replacing the stock cooler (AMD Wraith Prism), except that I didn't have the chance to do that. So right now using the stock cooler and the thermal paste that was on the cooler.

While checking the options for virtualization with Speccy, I've come across the Average temperature 90-105°C (194-221°F) for my CPU. Is this normal or too much?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 12:44 PM PDT

This is the build i have made so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HDQJcY

So i would like to know what you people think about this build and if i should change anything about it or not.

the things i'm least certain about is that i don't know if the CPU cooler is good enough and idk if i should use this gpu or an AMD gpu so i can use freesync.

    Thanks for your help :)

    VRM buzz?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 10:33 AM PDT

Hey so I bought a new mobo it's the B450 AORUS ELITE and I believe it is the VRM that is causing the noise. The AIO is fine, I turned off all the fans, and with the all the case parts on. It seems to only emminate from the top filter (the noise). Should I just RMA the thing? I am sure it's not my PSU it's an EVGA 650 GQ, 80+ GOLD 650W, Semi Modular. I have been testing for a few days and until today it is doing this noise.

I have little to no knowledge on building a pc so any advice/recommendations are welcome.
