    Simple Questions - May 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 May 2019 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

My Son's Entry Build as he goes into High School

    Posted: 01 May 2019 08:02 AM PDT

My oldest boy had his 14th birthday last month and is graduating 8th grade this month, and all he wanted was to have his own computer that he could use for gaming and homework and tinkering and gaming. Like a lot of folks, we have to be very frugal, and at first it was hard for me to embrace this with him, even though he was willing to pitch in from his own savings. As I thought about it, I realized that I can look back to my parents spending too much money on our first family PC when I was his age (a Compaq 486), and how much I really enjoyed it, and I can draw a direct line from that to my career today. So with that in mind and with the help of this sub and sales sub, it seemed much more acheivable for us.

For the build, he wanted something that he would be able to expand on over time as he continues to earn money. We've made the purchases below and he'll use a few second hand items for basic input devices and monitors for now. From my understanding, this seems like it will provide a good foundation that he should be able to add onto then start to upgrade throughout his HS carreer. But I would love your inputs if something looks wrong before he graduates and we start opening up boxes.

Case: Cooler Master mATX - $47

    PSU: Corsair 550W - $60

    Mobo: asRock B450M Pro4 - $70

    RAM: Patriot DDR4 3000MHz - $45

    Storage: Kingston M.2 240GB - $30

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 2200G - $70

Here are the next items on his list. If you see anything important missing, I'd love to know:

Wifi/BT adapter, Keyboard & Mouse, Monitor, OS, GPU, More Storage, RAM Upgrade

Finally, it's not really clear to me if we must purchase Windows and what the best (cheapest) way to do that for him is.

Thanks again to everyone for creating a helpful and informative community here.

A friends son is building his first build! Suggestions Welcome.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:55 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This is a gaming PC. This is the young guys first build. He plays Fortnite, and League of Legends. I am sure he would also play other premier titles as well. He was given a i7-7700k as a gift.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am sure he would like to play at 144hz/frames if possible. I do not know his current monitor but lets assume its at least 1080, potentially 1440. Also at least 144hz monitor.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

The young guy has worked his butt off and saved 1500$ for this build.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k8bBCb

He already has a i7-7700k. It was a gift. The build should be built around that. He picked these parts himself. He is not attached to anything other than the processor obviously. I do not think he needs the HD storage in addition to the SSD. Whatever motherboard that is suggested more than likely will not be compatible with the RAM he has chosen as well.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

He didn't ask me to add this but I am always in the corner of getting a decently cool looking case for a first build. He definitely wants a 2070 equivalent or better for a video card.

Thanks for your help and consideration.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

EDIT: I wanted to say to everyone helping with this thread I really appreciate it. This is a great learning experience for him. I wanted to show him how this can be a great experience and resource for him in the future. This is a great opportunity to see how people can be helpful and positive.

I will be buying him a windows 10 copy as a gift for the new build so it does not need to be included.

Worth it to switch from mid-size to sff build?

    Posted: 01 May 2019 08:03 AM PDT

Been thinking of building a 9600k+rtx2070 in a sff case in place of my 2700x+1080 ti mid-tower just for the extra desk space.

Should anyone ask, I'll be of course selling my old pc to fund the new one.

Can anyone tell me the other pros and cons to guide me on my decision?

    Thank you.

I feel the presence of a higher being about to lift me up..

    Posted: 01 May 2019 01:54 PM PDT

Lifetime console pleb just scrapped together enough pennies to ascend. Really excited to build my first pc and have been watching walk-through videos and reading up all I can here on reddit. Can any of you fine citizens of this subreddit offer up some advise or things to keep in mind, any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is my build, any opinions good or bad are welcome.

    Couple things:

    - CPU with built in graphics is redundant but i got it new from a relative a couple of months ago and well.. free is free.

    - GPU was purchased used on ebay for 60 dollars

    - Everything else is new and purchased here or there when it was on sale or with a promo etc etc

    Thanks again!

My experience with PC building and my advice.

    Posted: 01 May 2019 12:32 PM PDT

Howdy everyone, I've lurked forever and figure it was time for me to return the favor. I have built 2 PC's and figured I could give my two cents to what helped me a lot.

To start, in the planning phase, here's my advice.

    • This video by Bitwit is great, It helped me build and its very comprehensive.

    • For parts use PCpartpicker.com , It will save you the hassle of asking if things are compatible, it does that for you.

    • Learn what the terms mean. While I am not saying you should read a dictionary of computer terms, it helps to know the difference between water and air cooling a processor, along with knowing meaning behind clock speeds and what overclocking is.

    • look for products with good warranties Incase it fails on you.

    For building:

    • GET A MAGNETIC SCREWDRIVER, my number one tip, it'll make you life so much easier.

    • be careful, you can always always retry If something doesn't feel like its fitting, but do not shove things where they might not belong, the pins are quite delicate

    • cable manage now, you'll thank yourself later. This mainly revolves around being able to upgrade later

    Troubleshooting:

Check all connections again and make sure they are in the right places. Both times I had to troubleshoot, this was the culprit. If this fails look online, try rebuilding it again and then look for defects.

This is a smaller guide, but feel free to ask any questions or add on your own tips!

This is my build, the Motherboard supports 3200 overclock from its website:

Support for DDR4 3200(O.C.)/2933/2667/2400/2133 MHz memory modules

Here's more info on Task Manager, CPU-Z and HWinfo:

    1. Task Manager
    2. CPU-Z
    3. HWinfo

I put both 2 x 8 GB 3200 MHz sticks on Channel A, here's the memory channels from the manual:

    • Channel A: (DDR4_2 and DDR4_4)
    • Channel B: (DDR4_1 and DDR4_3)

I was planning to do Dual Channel (put one memory stick on DDR4_1 and the other on DDR4_2) for more FPS in gaming when I discovered this problem. When I rebooted and accessed the BIOS, the details shown on the memory was only 2400 MHz.

I was sure I changed the XMP to profile 1 BEFORE, saved and exited, reached Desktop and saw 3200 MHz on Task Manager. I assumed my memory will be running on 3200 MHz on next startup and didn't bother to check until now.

It was at that time when I turned on the PC that I first heard a "overrunning" (hardware working extra hard) sound from the CPU or Motherboard, I can't tell which one since I am new to building. This sound occurred right before I am taken to Desktop. I am sure this sound is an INDICATOR that my RAM was set to 3200 MHz and the PC turned it back to 2400 MHz before sending me to Desktop.

The XMP profile settings is only saved for one instance of reboot but after shutdown will revert back to default on the next boot right before I am sent to Desktop hence the sound. I recently updated my Motherboard BIOS (Q-flash) around 2 days ago by downloading from the official Motherboard website.

Do I need to set the clock speed manually? How to in the XMP settings, some buttons there cannot be changed, some are set to auto and some I'm afraid to randomly mess around with (e.g. change the Volt).

I am new, bought everything a week ago, assembled it for the first time and this made me HELLA NERVOUS, I bought the parts from my travels and want to avoid sending back items since it's far. I believe this is not a hardware problem for the time being. This writing took me at least 3 hours formatting included so please help!

EDIT: I watched and followed this Youtube video, turns out I have to use the + (plus) and (minus) button on the numpad in the BIOS to manually change the values then save, exit and reset normally.

To be really sure I turned my PC off and on at least two times then checked each time if RAM speed is on 3200 MHz now. The RAM speed is back to 3200 MHz on the Task Manager and 1500+ on CPU-Z and HWinfo! I'M SO HAPPY :D

First time building a gaming PC

    Posted: 01 May 2019 01:25 PM PDT

I've recently purchased all the components for a new gaming PC. I'm debating whether to have a local shop who's charging me $60 to assemble which he said would take approx. 3-4 hours or doing it myself.

I've only ever changed the GPU and RAM on my current machine, but never done so from scratch. My biggest fear is messing up the thermal paste or breaking something and having to buy a new part. Will it be difficult for a total newb? Should I attempt to build it or just have someone do it for me?

    HeadPhone question.

    Posted: 01 May 2019 08:02 AM PDT

I am looking at headphones for my PC for gaming and I am just exhausted looking at all the different headphones. I am a large man. I am what they call big boned and because of this, I have a big head so small ear cups and weak headbands do not survive long with me. My current PLANTRONICS Gamecom 788 headset lasted 3 years and broke at the swivels and I have finally had enough with the ducktape and looseness lol.
I have so far liked what I have seen of the Sennheiser game related ones but, are there others in the same range that are the best? So with all that said I am turning to you Reddit as a trusted source of honest reviews of wired and wireless headphones for gaming that I might find comfortable and sound great.

For those of you worrying about meticulous part picking for your first build

    Posted: 01 May 2019 09:02 AM PDT

I get it, I was in the same boat when I built my PC not too long ago. My situation was a bit different though because I was going from a prebuilt Omen and trying to upgrade it to a fully customized PC (didn't actually work but I'll get into that).

It all started with the idea to transfer all of the internals (minus the dvd drive) to a new case so that I could upgrade down the line. Well it turned out the power supply was a special and quite weird one that only fit in that particular Omen case and wouldn't fit in my new one. So then it turned into "oh well I'll also get a new power supply." it was at this point that I fell down the rabbit hole

Anyways I spent a ton of time researching and finally bought a 650W power supply. During this time my computer kind of laid in shambles and was unusable since I was in the process of moving it to the new case when I learned it wouldn't fit, so I just never set it all the way back up in the old case. At this point I started the grow restless, and started to realize that I could do some major reworking on this computer.

Over the course of a single night I bought a motherboard, CPU, and CPU cooler without even thinking of asking anyone else. I just looked on intel's website for the compatible socket, looked on Asus' website for socket type, and went for it. Ended up also buying my GPU in a similar fashion at 3 in the morning a few weeks later.

My point is, my build fits together fine, works great, and has had no issues with compatibility or performance for what I wanted it to do.

It also ended up that I basically used no parts from the old Omen except the RAM, which as I type this is getting delivered today Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro baby :s

This was my first time building a PC.

Don't doubt yourself! The resources out there like Linus and JayzTwoCents and BitWit are actually extremely helpful and you WILL be learning things if you watch them.

Builds work out, and you'll get there :D

    sound card for my babies?

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:54 PM PDT

my babies are two adam a5x:es and an adam 8 sub

and the audio I get is very clear, but music is a bit lifeless

with my previous asus motherboard I could add reverb and mess around with the equalizer

however I sold that computer to afford a 65 inch oled, no regrets lol,

Just a few days ago I made a catch of a used pc with an older i7 that had everything but the graphics card for only 220 euro and then I got a used RX580 for 130 euro so 350 in total so I´m really happy about that, but anyways

since I have my really high quality speakers, I have always felt that it is a shame I can´t feed them quality or mess with effects or EQ.

I am really into adding a bit of reverb, also if it helps anyone with reccomendations I have really liked how downloaded songs sound on the playstation Vita, probably non downloaded songs aswell.

I have heard about dacs and amps but I want to be able to mess with effects aswell

I saw the Asus Essence STX II, I´m a bit afraid it´ll be too old tho but I just don´t see a lot of options, all I want is more detail in my audio plus a bit of a bigger soundstage so that I don´t have to crank the volume up for it to fill the room in that sense, I like when you can get blown away even at lower volumes, and right now I have the crystal clearness but it just doesn´t pop

thanks for reading, I´m just asking for reccomendations in case anyone has experience with this

I´m getting it strictly for music aswell, I also like listening to jazz

Regarding AMD Gift with Ryzen 5 2600

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:50 PM PDT

Hello there! I have been holding off on upgrading my system for way too long now. I currently have a 1050ti and a i5-3470, which came out in 2012. Yikes! I feel like the time has come, and I am doing a WHOLE new PC build. This is good and all, but the reason I am making this post is regarding the AMD gift with Ryzen 5 2600. I already purchased Division 2 standard edition through UPlay. My gift comes with the gold edition. Would I have to make a whole new UPlay account to redeem the gold edition, or would I have to make a new account. Also, would I be better giving this code to a friend so I have people to play Division with or keeping it for myself? Thanks Guys! -kawaiisky

Looking to upgrade or build a new computer

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:41 PM PDT

I built this computer about 2-3 years ago as a budget build, but it seems to be crapping out on me every now and then when I have too many google chrome tabs open. I'm wondering if I should upgrade or if I should just build a new computer overall. I mainly just play some lower end video games (e.g., League of Legends, Overwatch) and have a million tabs open, and occasionally have a virtual machine in the background. Don't have a budget to work with, but ideally don't want the cost of upgrading to outweigh just getting a new computer.

Please see below for my current build. Thanks in advance for your help!

Replacing the GPU and PSU in the HP Pavilion 590-p0012nb.

    Posted: 01 May 2019 01:26 PM PDT

Sup, everyone... a friend of mine wants to replace their current system that's sporting a GTX1070 as well as a Corsair CS650M and we found a pretty decent deal on the HP system mentioned above on Coolblue though we're not sure if the PSU will a) have space and b) be compatible with the system? Due to it being modular I believe it should work out but I'm not sure about space as mentioned and the GTX1070 definitely won't run with the 180W PSU that the system comes with. In terms of building our own PC from start, not possible :P.

    Help me transition to pc

    Posted: 01 May 2019 01:26 PM PDT

So recently my psu for my xbox one blew out and rather than spend 70+ dollars for a reliable new one from Microsoft I decided to use this unfortunate event to transition to a pc.

A month later im here with all my parts and i have put it all together but i just cant seem to get it to post/display a signal to my tv/give power to my keyboard and mouse.

I have no idea what the problem is if its compatibility issues with my tv or what since i dont have a proper monitor yet but all the parts should be compatible as pcpartpicker.com https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jnqxw6 says they should and I followed the scattervolt youtube channel guide for the 500$ pc he built a few months ago https://youtu.be/fyJL2hO9-TY with just about the same parts except that i used the asus tuf b450 instead of the asus prime b450 and a different rx570 graphics card.

I have it all set up and the lights on the mobo and cpu fan turns on. The case fans also turn on but the lights don't which i dont know if thats something you have to configure after the pc boots or if i wired something wrong but regardless i need help. I haven't installed my graphics card yet because I wanted to make sure the unit was able to boot without it and to know that the gpu wasn't the problem. I'm trying to route the signal with an hdmi cable to my tv.

Im getting really frustrated because nothing seems to be working out here and im really considering just sending it all back and buying Microsoft's overpriced psu. Ive looked on a bunch of youtube videos and other resources to figure out the problem but i can't get a concise answer as to what I did wrong and now I'm hoping that some person to person help will solve my problem.

    Thanks.

    Laptop connected to Akitio Node

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:37 PM PDT

    Good day,

I have a laptop (thinkpad T570) with an intel i7-7600U double core quad thread from 2017 and 8 Gigs of ram. It is currently connected to an akitio node which has a gtx 770 with a thunderbolt 3 connector. The video card has a DVI outlet connected to my 1080p monitor and my laptop screen is not used to avoid a reduced bandwidth of the thunderbolt 3 (I think that's how it works). This set up is currently functional with recent games like Doom, my computer has shown it supports an external GPU time and again. I do not have a dedicated card on the actual laptop, i have integrated intel hd graphics 620.

My question is, can i upgrade the graphics card to a gtx 1660 Ti in this setup? The node has its own 400W power supply, some fans and two 8-pin power cables. The specs for the gtx 1660 Ti says it needs minimum 500W, however my current card says it needs minimum 600W and its working fine. The thunderbolt 3 connector should be around 40Gigs/second of bandwidth which should be enough considering the PCI-e 3.0 port has a 8 Gigs/second transfer rate.

If not, then what alternative should i consider that is more in line with with the capabilities of my machine, or in order to reduce possible bottlenecking from limted processing, memory and power requierments. I'm open to suggestions, however my budget is limited so better value for money is appreciated.

Also, i dont plan on overclocking this.

    Thanks for the support!

Looking for a CPU cooler alternative to the Fuma?

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:35 PM PDT

I have the Scythe Fuma rev. b. It cools amazingly, but it has the drawback of being thick/wide as heck. It was bad to the point that screwing in the last set of screws in the motherboard and plugging in the rear fan to the motherboard had be squeezing [and cutting my hand] against the sharp fin edges. And behold, I bent a cpu pin in the process, freaked out, and ended up having to pay a hefty sum to someone since I didn't find myself trusting to fix it. I wanted to go into the case in the next few weeks and change some case fans, mostly because I have like four 80mm from an old case and I wanted to get a couple 140mm and 120mm Noctuas. But part of me is still afraid of that cooler lol.

In essence, I'd like an option of an air cooler that cools just as well or better than the Fuma but that its not a dual tower cpu cooler or a much much thinner profile. I'm using Corsair LPX so ram clearance isn't an issue. The case is a Phanteks P350x, and the cpu is a Ryzen 2600 @ 4.0Ghz/1.275v. For a quality cooler I'm willing to spend less than $100, and though I've build a couple times, I rather stay away from aio since I rather not push my luck after the last debacle. Last but not least, if the cooler turns out to be much cheaper, is there a benefit in temperatures going from the P350x to the Meshify C or the Lancool One? Set up would be two 140mm at the front, one 120mm on the back. Ideally two 140mm at the top but currently could only fit one, also due to the cpu cooler. Thank you.

Sidegrade due to faults? 7700k to 9600k

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:01 PM PDT

    Hello.

I have a small form factor PC with a 7700K, 1080Ti. My motherboard has to be returned to the seller on eBay as it has faulty audio jacks.

I just lost a bid on the last remaining reasonably priced z270 ITX board in the UK currently.

I only play games currently on my PC and don't want to break the bank. I can sell my 7700k for ~£225 and buy a 9600k for just under £200, and buy a z390 motherboard to go with it.

Is this justifiable or should I simply buy a crappy h110 or something?

For reference I play at 1080p240Hz competetive titles.

Any comments on my Mini ATX-build?

    Posted: 01 May 2019 02:59 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm not so deep into building PCs but I really need to upgrade my current one.

    Current build:

    Video Card: R7 360 G32X0
    CPU: Intel CPU G 3220 3.00 Ghz (2 CPUS)
    Motherboard: H97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150
    RAM: 4GBDDR3-16000
Case: CX430M Cooler Master Elite 120 ITX
    Power Supply: Corsair CX 450M
    1 TB HDD; no SSD

    Desired upgrade:

Video Card: ZOTAC GTX 1060 3 GB with GeForce Exp Mini
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3,7 GhZ 8-Core
    2nd 4GB RAM
    whatever WIFI card

This is the best I could research with my limited knowledge. I hope the parts fit together and my power supply can handle everything. If you have any comments or you notice anything weird, please let me know. also, I'm trying to stay below 500€ with my upgrades.

    cheers!
