Looking for Advice on Next Laptop Purchase.

    Posted: 13 May 2019 11:01 AM PDT

    Evening all,

I'm in the market for a new laptop to replace my aging Hp Elitebook. I do have a desktop already, but I need a laptop that I can take with me while I'm out of the house that is capable of doing the work I need to do.

What I'll mostly be using it for is as follows:

    • Light gaming (Football Manager, Rocket League)
    • Photo/Video editing (Photoshop)
    • Music production (FL Studio)
    • Writing Code (Python, JavaScript)
    • YouTube/Netflix
    • Work/Home related tasks (Office suite)

Below are the following features I'm looking for in a laptop:

    • Quality IPS screen
    • 14 - 15" Screen
    • Good at multi tasking
    • Good Battery Life
    • Good GPU/CPU
    • Good selection of input/outputs (Hdmi, 2x USB3, Bluetooth, Ethernet, Wireless, SD card reader, Usb-C (optional))
    • Backlit keyboard
    • Touchscreen (optional)
    • Dual storage (optional)

My budget is £550/$700, as I plan to purchase the laptop outright. However I could slightly increase the budget for the right laptop. I'm not after the most high spec'd laptop, just something that's good enough to keep me occupied away from the desktop.

I plan to fit an SSD or increase the ram if the laptop doesn't initially come with enough storage/memory.

So far I've come across the following laptops: (I'm aware that they don't include all of the features I listed, but the majority of features that I'm searching for)

    Huawei Matebook D 14"

    Hp Pavilion 15"-cw0008na

Out of these 2 models which would you go for? Additionally, are there any other laptops that are worth considering?

    Gaming laptop on a budget

    Posted: 13 May 2019 02:15 PM PDT

Hello! I am UK based and I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop. At most I'm willing to spend 900 or little over 900£. The laptop is going to be used mainly for video games, watching YouTube and other video streaming platforms and basic University stuff, like word, power point. I'm willing to make sacrifices for increased performance and cooling if necessary. The laptop that caught my attention is: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-FX505GM-AL279T-Bezel-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B07MWD86YZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmrnull_3?keywords=asus+tuf+fx505+gtx+1060&qid=1557781840&s=gateway&sr=8-3-fkmrnull

Looking for other suggestions or opinions for the laptop I mentioned. Thank you!

    Laptop Chassis Issue

    Posted: 13 May 2019 08:52 AM PDT

Recently, I've noticed that a bump/bubble has formed in the chassis of my HP Omen 17 laptop. I've never mishandled or mistreated the laptop, and I've owned it for over 2 years now. It has never has had any hardware or software issues before this occurrence. There is a bump on the top of the chassis, as well as a smaller much less noticeable bump on the bottom in the same area (it cant be seen by the eye but when feeling the bottom of the laptop there is a bump)
I have linked images taken of what the top bump looks like and where it is placed on the laptop.

I have tried to open up the chassis to explore the issue further, but unfortunately I do not have the right tool kit to remove the bottom cover.

    Is this a serious issue?

High school student who wants a laptop

    Posted: 13 May 2019 11:50 AM PDT

I already have an iPad 6 and a gaming pc to do all my gaming so this will be strictly for school and coding on code.org, (maybe some very very light gaming when I'm on a break) I have been looking at chrome books because they are the cheapest and they seem to have all I need. My budget is 200-400 dollars or 800 to 1300 aed. I would prefer it to have a 1080p screen

Edit: would also need it to run fusion 360 for May cd class

    Which one should I choose?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 11:49 AM PDT

The past couple months I've been looking around for something to replace my laptop. I've had my current laptop for over 6 years, and I'm more than ready to upgrade. I have looked at a few different options, and I've narrowed it down to a few that I like, but I'm always open to suggestion.

Whichever one I choose, I plan on getting 8th gen i7, 16 RAM, and 512 SSD. However, a very big thing for me is that I'd like it to be quiet as possible, and something that can stay relatively cool. The biggest issue I have with my current laptop is that every time I open it up, the fans get super loud and my laptop heats up pretty quickly. I use my laptop mostly for general use and schoolwork. I don't play games on pc or photoshop, but I do listen to music and watch shows daily, so good speakers are a must.

The laptops I've looked at are the Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, Lenovo x1 Carbon, or the Lenovo X1 Yoga. I'm not sure how much I would use the tablet side of a 2-in-1, but I would like my laptop to have a touchscreen. If anyone has any advice or opinions, or a suggestion for a different laptop I'd love to hear it.

I bought my first gaming laptop, but it feels really hot when i run anything.

    Posted: 13 May 2019 11:17 AM PDT

I just recently bought a gaming laptop, and I wanted to play games with good graphics, but also be able to use it for college, and it feels very hot even when I play games like cs:go which shouldn't be very taxing on hardware.

I downloaded a temperature monitor and it says it gets up too 195 Fahrenheit in each of the CPU cores after an hour of playing games. The maximum temp it's rated for is 212 Fahrenheit, but that sounds very hot to me.

It's my first gaming computer/laptop so I don't really know what to expect. I are these temperatures normal?

Opinions on the Eve V? Longtime Mac user, just ordered one

    Posted: 13 May 2019 09:14 AM PDT

I'm well aware that Eve Tech has a terrible rep for not delivering to backers while continuing to sell machines. However, since the design and the specs of the Eve V fit the bill for me and I have a good credit card with purchase protection, I decided to guinea pig myself and ordered the $599 M3 configuration. I'm a 30+ year Mac user and this will be my first ever PC. (Incidentally, I hope my purchase will enable the company to fulfill or refund one of the early backers.)

I posted about my order in the r/evev forum but got immediately banned, for what reason I don't know. Anyway, has anyone here used an Eve and if so, what are your thoughts on it? The company has a 14 day return policy, so I'll have 2 weeks to play around with it and decide whether or not to keep it.

    XPS 15" 9570 VS MSI PS63

    Posted: 13 May 2019 08:08 AM PDT

Currently looking for a laptop that is portable, well built and with dedicated GPU that allows for casual gaming. Although I'm quite tech savvy the primary use would be to watch stuff on it as I don't have a tv and I can't always use my projector.

Now, I really want to use it for some light gaming too, I'm not really that into videogame but I really miss playing GTA 5 or the occasional new title. I think the GTX 1050 of the msi is enough but I'd probably benefit from the Ti of the dell.

Yet the most important thing is build quality. I want to spend my money on a well built object and I don't know if msi is on par with Dell on this one.

Dell wins hands down regarding the screen (I'm considering the FHD version, 4k is above my budget)

Street prices are more or less the same (at least here in Western Europe).

The difference in cpu power doesn't really matter for my usage.

Which would you buy between the two?

Do you think that all the problems affecting the xps should make me choose the msi? Should I wait for the 9580? Is the msi really that more portable? Would I notice a big difference better the standard 1050 and the Ti?

What is better for battery life? Lenovo Ideapad 530S with Full HD or with WQHD?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 07:48 AM PDT

I am interested in the WQHD for that sweet 300+ nits of brightness and crisp quality, but I am afraid that it will drain the battery faster than the 1080p version of it...

Please let me know what you think!

Also do you think the thickness of the lower bezel of the display is awkward? I kinda don't like it - is it painful in real life?

    Cheapest laptop possible?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 07:29 AM PDT

Looking to find a used laptop for someone to browse web + Skype.

I'm seeing listings for Thinkpad T430 for 60-70$ used - I can pop in an SSD and new battery if necessary.

Size is not an issue, nor is screen resolution.

Is there a better option for this price?

Wiping everything will cancell my Windows 10 license?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 07:28 AM PDT

I'm planning on upgrading my asus k550v (or vx in most of the sites i've seen) with an ssd, removing the DVD reader; then making a clean install, with all wiped out. I've read that the license gets stored in the motherboard/BIOS, is it right?

Ps. I've seen some putting the HHD in the new caddy and placing the SSD in the older HDD placement, thus doing more work. Does it have any advantage? Or can I just install the new SSD and leave the HDD in its position?

Edit: sorry I don't know how to make the question "category-related"

    Advice for a gaming laptop for 1600€ / 1800$?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 12:55 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm an Apple refugee looking to switch to a proper gaming laptop.

I want to stay flexible and mobile, so I'm not going for a tower. Still, when I'm playing games at home I want to be comfortable, so I have already eyed this mouse, this keyboard and this screen. If you think these are not good choices, please let me know!

Anyway, keeping these three purchases in mind, I still have 1600€ / 1800$ budget left to choose a laptop. I live in Germany, but I think there's no relevant brand that doesn't sell their products here.

Games I want to play on my laptop are:

    - Shooters, mainly Battlefield

    - Strategy games, mainly Total War

    - Minecraft, packed with texture packs and shaders

I'd like to be able to play all new games, as of 2019, on highest settings and with 60 fps at least. If this is not possible with my budget, please tell me right away. I'm a complete noob when it comes to components and stuff, so bear with me.

I'd prefer something that doesn't look like it's designed to survive a fall out of an airplane and weighs as much as a horse, but this is not my main focus.

If you're suggesting a laptop that perfectly suits my needs and my wallet but is big and heavy, it's okay!

I really hope that you can help me out, thanks in advance :)

Looking for the perfect video game/editing laptop

    Posted: 12 May 2019 10:44 PM PDT

Hello all, next year I will be working with local non-profits in my community to create promotional videos for them. I am a video producer, as well as a big gamer. I am looking for a laptop that can suit both my interests. I would like the laptop hardware and software last me a long time. Storage is not going to be too much of a problem as I plan on buying an external hard drive. In terms of budget, I would say nothing over $2,000.

Help me Find a new laptop!

    Posted: 13 May 2019 12:14 AM PDT

Right now I have a old trashy HP ultrabook it has 4gb of ram an i5 3337U @1.8Ghz. Now I dont want to go all out paying $1,000 for a new laptop. I just need something I can use late at night or in a plane to get my work done. By work I mean Coding, gaming, 3D modeling, etc.. You see im a developer for a server in Grand theft Auto so I need to be able to run the game no problem, and be able to fiddle with the files at the same time. I also need it to be quick, not gaming wise but when I click something I need it to be spot on because I don't have time to wait 7 seconds before a window pops up. So 8gb of ram or more, I dont care if it even has a GPU I just need it to run Grand Theft Auto 5 at High settings at around 70 FPS. And the rest I just need it to be reliable NOT HEAVY this will be on my lap in the bed when im doing late night work. I also cant have the battery running out after 2 and a half hours. Because my laptop has a WHOPPING 1 and a half hour battery life. And somewhat cheap. Im fine buying stuff off of ebay. So if you see a laptop thats upgradable im all for it. Something under $750. Like I said im fine with used parts and upgrades that I have to do.

I'm looking for a 2in1 solution for university

    Posted: 13 May 2019 06:06 AM PDT

I would like to get myself a 2in1 tablet for uni with a screen for pen input so that I can use it to take notes. But I would also like to be able to use the keyboard for programming, writing etc.

I already looked at the surface pro, but since it is quite expensive I would like to know if there are cheaper options. But I think this would be a good direction for my requirements (taking notes and programming)

Apple is lff the table, not only due to personal preference and price, but also because i can't use the iPads for programming.

(UK) HP Pavilion is dead - where can I get specialist support?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 05:25 AM PDT

    Hey all,

My HP Pavilion has unfortunately died as far as I know. I press the power button and it doesn't actually power the laptop. It just keeps flickering and seems like it wants to turn on, but can't, and then restarts - think of like a car in a horror film. The actor turns the key and it just keeps making that noise without actually booting up.

I asked a friend who is more technology minded than I to have a look, and unfortunately he said he has no idea what is wrong with it. He thinks it may be a motherboard issue, but isnt sure.

Is there anywhere in the UK I could send it off to for specialized HP support? When I check their website for UK repairs it just mentions printers, not laptops.

If it is a motherboard issue, is this something I could get any IT specialist shop to sort out? Get the part off ebay or whatever and ask him to repair?

I'm pretty gutted as I forked out quite a bit for this laptop, and for it to die with no reasoning is frustrating, and i'm just hoping that it actually isnt a motherboard issue.

    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c05373642

That is the laptop if anyone is curious.

    Thanks,
