This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Not a joke, is it bad for my car to be laying on top of my desktop while it is running?

    Posted: 12 May 2019 04:32 PM PDT

Exhaust is only through the top of the case. Thought it was cute at first and just removed the cat from the tower. Now it is an on going issue. I am new to PC and am wondering what the negative consequences are from having a cat lay on top of your exhaust fans are?

    Edit: Cat* lol damn...

Morning edit: lmfao my highest post and first gilded came from a damn typo. Thanks kind strangers!! and everyone for the tips lol

    Build Help/Ready:

Hi Reddit, It's my first time building a PC, I'm looking for a very affordable build for gaming. I really just want it to run most current and older games at medium to high settings.

I want to spend around $500. I can get the CPU and mobo bundled from Micro Center for $145.

Anything that can be downgraded, or anything that I need to spend more on? Feedback would be very much appreciated!

Are motherboards with very good analog 5.1 sound components still being released?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 10:47 AM PDT

My old Creative X-fi from like 2005 is dead, and I'm now down to a 2010 motherboard and using a dragonfly DAC for headphones. I miss having my 5.1 surround system, with its 3 analog connectors, hooked up to the sound card for gaming.

Motherboard listings rarely talk about sound quality. I know that some have added things such as separate soundboard PCB layers, separate DACs and processors, better plated connectors, 3D audio processors. These are a minimum requirement to me in a motherboard, especially given the noise problem of integrated audio

I'm really annoyed that so many parts lists for motherboards ignore this or include boards with bad sound. So what's the latest and greatest in integrated audio?

Is this PC good? - Help with Make-a-Wish

    Posted: 13 May 2019 12:18 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I don't know if this is the proper channel to ask (I originally posted in /r/pcmasterrace and they directed me here), but a friend of mine is doing a Make-a-Wish for a tennager with cancer (she has thankfully finished her chemo) and the kid requested a "Gamer PC" - as gaming was the only thing she could do for fun while she was sick.

The standard configuration for Make a Wish PCS is the following:

    Motherboard: SK-1151 H110M-E ASUS USB 3.0

    Processor: Intel Core i5 7400 3.6 GHZ

    Memory: 1 x DDR4 8GB 2400 Mhz •

HD 1x SATA III 1 TB Seagate 7200 RPM

    Graphics Card: GTX 1050TI 4GB DDR5

She asked me if that is a good enough configuration for a gamer PC and as I have no idea I am requesting your help - do you guys think this would be enough or should they try to get something better?

    Thanks,

    $750 R5 1600 + 1070 Ti Build?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:22 PM PDT

Made this part list because I might build it. It's pretty decent other than the graphics card being on eBay, but still pretty good. Also the cpu and mobo are bundled for super cheap @ micro center :) . What do you guys think? Any suggested changes/recommendations?

    Reusing thermal pads

    Posted: 13 May 2019 09:10 AM PDT

First of all, don't judge me.

I built my PC so I have some experience with PCs, but this is my first high end GPU.

So, I bought a used 1080 G1 Gaming for 290€ and it works good. It was a little bit dirty and I wanted to clean it and change the paste, so I opened it up and saw thermal pads.
Now, they're in pretty bad shape and this is my first time dealing with them.
Can I change the paste and use the card for a day or two with those old ones, which ones should I buy and how do I apply/change them?

Here are some photos, and also is the circled thing also a thermal pad?

Build is complete, trying to decide on a monitor on a budget (EVGA GTX 1660)

    Posted: 13 May 2019 12:03 PM PDT

I've completed my build, running with an EVGA GTX 1660 (not the 1660ti) and an i5-9400F. I'm currently using a 24" 1080p/60Hz TV as my monitor since it's all I've had, and I'm looking to spend less than $400 (ideally closer to $300) on a monitor.

I was looking on Microcenter and saw a good deal on an MSI Optix MAG341CQ ultrawide monitor, but research told me that my graphics card may not be the best for a 1440p ultrawide. I've mostly looked at other 27" 1440p 144hz monitors that fall into my price range, both flat and curved, and gaming is not going to be the only thing I use this for as I'm a marketing professional and will be looking to do some WFH stuff in the future.

This is my first build and I've never really looked too closely at monitor specs in the past, so any insight/advice would be great.

Opinions on the Phanteks new P600S? It looks cool and seems to have good airflow but also good noise levels. What do you think about this case? Is it worth it? Anyone has it and wanna share his experience building in this case and also temps?

    As a GPU I used a ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 AMP! 6Gb.

Now I have the Problem of constant crashes of the system. The system focus is on programming and doing computing-intensive stuff, which will later also include CUDA. If I connect my GPU to my two 4K Monitors and an 1080p Monitor, the Big screens turn black while the 1080p monitor shows only some images looking like cached windows graphic content (e.g. loading indicators and such stuff).

The problem solved partly, when I sent the GPU back and used an old Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming. which i borrowed from a college of mine. This card does not crash directly but now I have following problems:

    • If i start HandBrake with NVEnc, the GPU sometimes freezes resulting in a complete system restart.
    • Some programs simply close unexpectedly like Firefox or my IDEs. Firefox then states, the tab has unexpectedly crashed. This is regardless of the tab playing video or simply showing a website. But those problems occur rarely (about 1-2 times a day) with the GTX 970 and the GPU is able to provide a picture to all monitors in contrast to the GTX 1060.

I already did a stress test on the CPU and observed several temperature limits being inside boundaries and the system remaining completely stable. Also HWMonitor tells, the voltages delivered by the PSU remain in a normal area (around 1.2 - 1.1V for the GPU) and all fixed Voltages (VCC, 3V3, 12V) remain stable while observing them through software.

I will wait until I have my replacement GTX 1060 part, but can anybody tell me, at which part I should focus my attention while resolving the issue? Also, I'm very sorry for my bad english since it is not my mother tongue.

Edit: Add more details about things i tried Edit2: Clarify behaviour

[Opinions Requested] Creating a new build with recycled parts, or starting from scratch.

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:56 PM PDT

My knowledge of building and part picking is BARE MINIMAL. I've done only a handful of hours research before choosing these parts. I plan to do more because I need time to put away some cash.

Way back (mid 2012) I built a PC. It was my first, and the only one I've done so far. I had help from a friend who was rather knowledgeable.

So far, the RAM, CPU, PSU, and stock cooler are salvageable in good condition. I'm sure some wires and screws have gone missing over the years, though. I put together this part list that includes all the parts I have and need, (excluding PSU because it is not listed.) and was wanting a second opinion on it.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wBBXD2

    PSU: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005SCYFRE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XcF2Cb2W19EA3

How well would the above mentioned build compare to this one below? Would a game like Red Dead 2 be able to be played at 1080p 60+ FPS on the one used from recycled parts?

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/y6bmw6

I assume even though it is a much older generation processor and RAM, it would keep up fairly well given it's 8 cores instead of 6. I know nothing on this matter, though.

$800 is fairy high for me. Even $500 seems high when I have all those extra parts already. The case is not salvageable, long story. The current one listed is just a placeholder.

I work 40 hours a week, and don't game often. However, I want to be able to game if I wanted to. For example, Red Dead 2, GTA V. Also some minor video editing, nothing too intense just putting clips together really.

Possible problem with H115i pro platinum

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:05 PM PDT

I believe I've narrowed down my problems to my cooler, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

When I first built my computer I got an error all the time that said something like "The USB device connected could not be recognized" and it would go away and then come back 10-30mins later for a couple of hours till it finally stopped. It would do it again if I restarted my computer. I checked all of my USB ports, including the ones on my monitor and the computer can read fine from all of them. It doesn't give me this error so much anymore, but every once in a while I will see it.

I've noticed that sometimes iCue doesn't even recognize that there is a cooler plugged in and just says "no device connected".

When I sleep my computer, I'll come back 5 minutes later and everything will be turned on again, so something is triggering the computer to come back on and I wonder if its the cooler disconnecting or reconnecting.

What might be causing these issues?

Edit: I don't think I've connected it to the motherboard incorrectly because when it is connected it gives me a proper readout and all the colors work and I can change the fan speeds from iCue.

TL;DR - Computer won't stay asleep and gives error messages of USB device not being recognized. I think it might be the cooler.

Looking to build my first gaming PC. Help would be very appreciated. Budget:£2000

    Posted: 13 May 2019 01:05 PM PDT

    Hello r/buildapc,

I was wondering if this setup would be good for gaming+streaming, ideally for 1440p and above 60Hz. I do play taxing games like PUBG as well (although only planning on streaming LoL).

If you would change or add anything, could you please let me know? Ideal budget ~£1500, but willing to go up to £2000. Tips on case and fans would be greatly appreciated (I mean RGB control is nice, but certainly not necessary)

edit: I also already have a Seagate 2TB Barracuda

    Old CPU replacement part?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:53 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I have a relatively minor issue I could use some help with.

So I have (had?) a PC out in my living room for multimedia / streaming, but unfortunately I had an Asshole Roommate who fucked with the CPU on it right before they moved out. Some time after they left, I found the heatsink / CPU unattached from the motherboard, with multiple pins on the CPU bent. I think what happened was after they removed the CPU (for whatever goddamn reason), they tried to reattach it and bent several pins in the process, and then just left it there for me to find. I'm wondering if the CPU is salvageable, or what replacement I should get for it. Fortunately this was my 'secondary' PC, so I'm not too concerned with performance as I am with just having a working PC that I can stream from.

The PC is an old HP pre-built (at least several years old, the CPU says 2009 on it) that was given to me by a friend, and the CPU is an AMD Athlon II ADX640. The bent pins are located all over the chip, and I'm not sure if I could even fix them all without breaking some off (if the chip even still works). Is it worth it to try to fix it? Or what would be a good replacement?

    Many thanks!

First PC build in years, "Vega Wave"; love this sub!

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:46 PM PDT

First off, thanks to all the helpful threads found here. Been curating my build for quite some time and finally pulled the trigger.

Luckily we have a Microcenter down here and I was able to get them to price match some stuff as well as take advantage of all their good deals.

    Vega Wave

    Build List

First build in ~10 years and I did a bunch of research prior. I know I could have done better in certain areas but I wanted to have a somewhat show piece, thus the expensive case and RGB. Also the money i dumped into a monitor could have been spent elsewhere as well but, I mean, I had been gaming on a TV locked at 60Hz, and console, for so long that I said F*** it and went 3440x1440.

That is what I love about this place, and PC building in general. At the end of the day you are free to express yourself however you want and to splurge on whatever you want.

    Fun Notes

    • Definitely tried to OC my ram before I had even installed my OS so I blue screened for ~half an hour before I realized my mistake.

    • Got even higher scores in the WWZ benchmark with MCLK at 980MHz and SCLK over 1700 but it was not stable at all haha.

    • Definitely lost the silicon lottery but I am snagging a Navi and Ryzen 3rd gen this Christmas so I am not too worried about it :)

    • The color scheme matches my RL car :)

what cpu should i upgrade to?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:37 PM PDT

i currently have an amd fx 8320 with a gtx 1060 and i am planning to upgrade cpus,

i am planning to buy a ryzen 3 2200g because it has great value and is much better than my current cpu, and gives room to upgrade later without having to buy new mobo and ram. however, i have heard people say you shouldn't use this with a dedicated graphics card. as far as my research goes its cheaper and better performing than all other dedicated ryzen cpus at a similar price.

    why shouldn't i get a 2200g?

    Core i5 9600-T?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 03:22 PM PDT

So back when I was young and stupid during the mining craze of 2018, I bought an Asus Z270-P motherboard and a Pentium processor for a rig that I would never end up building.

Anywho, I got all these parts laying around but I'm missing the most important piece: a nice CPU.

I looked up the board's CPU compatibility (https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-Z270-P/HelpDesk_CPU/) and of course every CPU listed is 6th or 7th gen crap that is way overpriced.

But lo and behold halfway down the list I see Core i5-9600T. I can't find shit on this mythical beast. I can't find benchmark numbers, and I can't find it for sale anywhere. Intel's own site says it has already launched, though.

    Am I taking crazy pills?

    dslr camera as a webcam?

Bought 300$ Mining 1080 ( non ti), was it a bad Idea?

    Posted: 13 May 2019 12:52 PM PDT

So I was on Ebay and I found a 1080 for $289 and 10$ shipping, so I though oh man that's a good deal then I saw that it was a mining card. I knew it wasnt a scam because he had a sold listing with a mining rig with other 1080s,and I thought well miners undervolt their gpus anyway. I know the fans might have gone out so I'll jerry-rig a 120mm fan onto it, do you guy think it was a good idea?
