Is there a "Steve Jobs" of Android? Posted: 12 May 2019 11:33 AM PDT Not your standard question, just popped into my head, figured here would be a better place than any, even though it's not the average tech support question. I feel like whoever had the idea for Android should be recognized. Microsoft has Bill Gates, Apple had Steve Jobs, Linux in general has Linus Torvalds, but I've never heard the name of the fellow who looked at iOS and said "hold my beer, we can do better." and knocked down the first domino in changing smartphones forever. Needing an answer or solution to a problem on Aunt's phone Posted: 12 May 2019 04:19 PM PDT My aunt flew down to visit, and yesterday she asked me about a problem she was having with her phone. She's not tech savvy at all, and most of the time her two grown kids fix and manage the phone any time she encounters an issue. Though apparently when she asked one of them about this, her daughter said that she had no idea what it was and was afraid to mess with it and make it worse. The problem: Aside from being littered with notifications and pre-installed apps that she can't uninstall (I removed apps that she didn't use and were uninstallable, and they're pretty much all apps that I've seen commonly used like Facebook and the game Fruit Ninja), the issue started about 2 weeks ago, and it shows a very vibrant red box, on the top right corner, with what it looks like either commands or errors. It repeats the same pattern of:
And towards the bottom has two variations of that without repeating:
and then ends with the original pattern. There is also a tiny red box that is located on the bottom left corner of the screen. I don't really know much about Android outside of basic fixes for being slow or having ads pop up outside of the app that causes them, just basic things. I tried googling many key words, as well as the "page_show/hide" lines as well, but I haven't seen anything relating to this problem. She said she didn't do anything different when it started, didn't download anything new, etc. I sifted through all sorts of settings, I noticed that it doesn't move when I tried editing the home page (as you would do if you add a widget, just pressing and holding on the home screen), I tried interacting with it in all sorts of ways but haven't gotten any success from it aside from pressing and holding just, again, opens the options to edit the home screen, as if it's not even there. My only discovery was that I was able to, temporarily, get the big red box to go away when I pressed and held where the tiny red box on the bottom left. Again, interacting with the tiny box did nothing, and tapping it only opened the phone app that the box sorta overlays on. I have taken a couple pictures (not screenshots, but will go take one if requested) of the screen. It's not the best quality, but I tried to capture the lines of text in the red box as best as I could, along with the entire screen capture. Entire Screen: https://imgur.com/Bbyl02G Red box with lines of text: https://imgur.com/s3BbC9d Apologies if this has an obvious answer or if this has been asked before. I tried searching for posts with the same issue, but either there aren't any or I wasn't wording them the right way to find one. Thanks anyone for their time. [link] [comments] |
How to disable OS Updates (Android 9.x) ? Posted: 12 May 2019 04:44 PM PDT Is there a way to disable to OS Updates without rooting? My S10 is currently on Android 9, and I am able to get rid of the update prompt by Force stopping the three software update apps EVERY 2 hours. I have already turned on developer options to "disable" the auto updates. Is there a way to turn it off for good? [link] [comments] |
Youtube vanced: free up space to download Posted: 12 May 2019 10:34 PM PDT Apparently, I have 22.5gb of free space in my sd card and yesterday youtube vanced decided that i won't be able to download any video because i don't have enough space and now I have to use internal storage instead which only have 1gb of free space. This also happened to the normal youtube app. Any idea how to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 May 2019 09:45 PM PDT My apps are everywhere, unorganised and all over different pages. iPhone's have a way of organising all the apps fitting them all in pages. Is there a way in settings to do this like iPhones [link] [comments] |

Phone overheated and now won't charge. Posted: 12 May 2019 05:56 PM PDT I need some help. Last night I had my phone plugged in to the its charger and I was watching a video while laying in my bed. I fell asleep while at some point and with YouTube's autoplay turned on my phone was essentially playing videos the entire time a was asleep. I woke up at some point and found my phone near me in my bed (still plugged in) and burning hot. Like VERY hot. I took my phone, unplugged it and threw it off my bed onto the floor next to my bed. The phone must have shut itself off at some point but I went back to sleep right away so I don't know when. Anyways I woke up to my normal alarm a couple hours later. I found my phone sitting on the floor where I had tossed it. It was cool (or you know room temperature) to the touch, but it was also completely dead. I picked up the charger and plugged it in. My phone then proceeded to do what I can best describe as a charging boot loop. It would show the battery icon and then say not enough charge to power on, and it would keep doing that over and over and over again. I left it plugged in hoping that it would just stop but it didn't. Anyways, I didn't pay it too much attention for a while. When I finally went back to it I unplugged and noticed that the charger had something weird looking in it (I was still groggy so I couldn't tell what it was) I left my phone unplugged and then went and got one of my extra chargers. I plugged it into my phone and it charged up like normal. I used the charger periodically throughout the day to charge up my phone (my phone is old and does not hold much of a charge anymore). Then, earlier this evening my phone died completely so I plugged it in, the phone got hot while charging, not nearly as hot as before but definitely more than I would normally expect from my phone. I then took a look at the charger and noticed more of the same weird greenish particles inside of the USB C charger. And keep in mind this was a spare charger that I had NEVER used before. I then took a look inside the actual port of my phone and saw that it had weird particulate matter and what I guess appears to be corrosion inside of it. I have not plugged in my phone since and it is completely dead. Is it safe to charge the phone still or do I need to live without a phone for the next several months. I plan on upgrading my phone as soon as the Note 10 comes out but there is still no release date so that could be a while from now. I use my phone fairly frequently. I can live without it for a week if I have to but not for months. And I have no way of charging up the phone without it being plugged in because the V20 doesn't support wireless charging and I never bought and can't seem to find the charging cradle made for V20 battery. Tips, help, suggestions? Note: My Phone is an LG V20 in case anyone is curious. [link] [comments] |
I have a Galaxy Tab A that nobody really uses, can I use any tutorial to root it? Posted: 12 May 2019 02:08 PM PDT I'm asking because I've noticed that there are, apparently, very specific root instructions (e.g. "How to root your Galaxy S9+!") but I don't know if that means it only works for that device or that's just how they titled it. I've never really rooted anything so, apologies if it's a stupid question. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 May 2019 09:45 AM PDT Google Photos functions as my default photo gallery and every photo I take appears in it. I disabled the back up cloud option and my question is if its now just a normal local phone gallery or do the photos end up online on Google databases? I am concerned for my privacy. Thank you. Please help - Alcatel Pixi KingRoot!! Posted: 12 May 2019 08:28 AM PDT My son(6) has autism and is into his computers. He has an Alcatel Pixi 3, and has decided to root it using KingRoot. The issue that I have is when I turn on the device, it displays the normal lock screen with the clock etc. and say swipe to unlock, but it will not swipe. If I hold down the power button, the options come up to power off or restart, and these buttons work, so I know it's not an issue with the touchscreen. I've tried connecting it to my PC, but the unbugging permission notification won't appear on the tablet, so I cannot gain access this way. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated! Who uses protection on smartphones? Posted: 12 May 2019 10:08 AM PDT I personally use a case. I want to get a dbrand skin but I don't know if I should. I rarely drop my phone, and if I do, it from pocket height on a hardwood surface. So, in your opinion, should I get a skin, stick with a case, or go without protection. I'm also wondering if any of you use any sort of protection on your smartphone. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 May 2019 12:54 AM PDT Just as title says. I use an OG Google Pixel XL with Gboard. The keyboard works great but I want to know if there is a way to shift the entire keyboard up a couple centimeters. Maybe movie the bottom row where the space bar is up to the second row where the shift key is. I know the settings allow to have the keyboard taller, but that still doesn't fix the issue [link] [comments] |
Default Wallpaper Positioning. How Do I Center? [Nova Launcher] Posted: 12 May 2019 03:32 PM PDT By default, a wallpaper will not be centred and instead, you'll get the wallpaper running off the right edge. I know one of the solutions is setting a wallpaper that is the same resolution as the display. However, this is really frustrating. Using an example that I've found. This ends up looking like this . I'm using Nova Launcher. Nova Launcher Settings < Desktop < Scrolling wallpaper and infinite scrolling are both turned off. How do I fix this? [link] [comments] |
Best third party Twitter client? Posted: 12 May 2019 11:18 AM PDT Hey everyone! On my iPhone I use Tweetbot instead of the official Twitter app and I love it, but I've not found a better replacement for Android. I don't like the official app, and would like a better alternative. I'm currently using Fenix 2, and it's alright, but if there's a lighter & more efficient app I'd love to download it! Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Question regarding 16gb of storage phone Posted: 12 May 2019 05:15 AM PDT Hello everybody, hope you are doing well. So, i have the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X (in other words the snapdragon version) and i made the mistake to buy it with 16gb of internal storage. I own this phone since 2017. Recently, i get the "storage is running low" message all the time. I also have a 32gb SD Card. In my 2,5 years of usage, i rarely encountered this problem. I am running an android 9.0 custom rom and the phone is rooted. And before you say it, no it is not rom specific. It happens with any other custom rom and any official rom after about a month of usage. No matter what i delete/uninstall the message comes back 1-2 days later. Clearing cache seems to do nothing and the only thing present on my internal storage are the apps. Now, i do know that it is a normal issue with 16gb phones, but my question is : is there any way to transfer apps to the SD? Or do anything else for that matter? 99% of the apps installed i use almost daily. Checking the storage info all i see is apps taking 7.6gb of storage and i don't even have a big game installed. Apps like links2sd are not working and searching online proved fruitless (all i get are different apps to move apps to sd but none seem to work). If it matters, my phone is rooted with Magisk. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
