What's the right way to mount an AP to the ceiling in my home? Posted: 29 May 2019 01:55 PM PDT I mount hundreds of APs on grid ceilings at work, but I'm scared to run cable and do it at home. Punching a hole from the attic seems awful permanent. Drilling screws from the mounting bracket seems okay, once. What about when I upgrade the AP? The new bracket will likely leave holes where the screws were. What about when I sell the house? If I take the AP down there will now be a random hole. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
All internet drops during file uploads - help Posted: 29 May 2019 07:18 AM PDT A couple of months ago, I switched from Comcast to AT&T U-Verse. I never had this problem on Comcast before, so I've been troubleshooting this as an AT&T issue. According to them, there's no problem with their setup to my home. So I want to try to figure out if the problem is with my router/configuration. I have tried a few different configurations and none have fully resolved the issue (I'll describe in more detail in a bit), but my current setup is:
The problem: When I upload large files or lots of small files (example: I was backing up lots of photos last night to the cloud), the internet for all devices on the network is not functional -- nothing loads, ever. When the uploading stops, internet access returns to normal. I can load a couple of speed test websites prior to upload and attempt to run speed tests when the internet drops. Results vary wildly. Almost consistently, www.speedtest.net fails the latency test. AT&T's speed test site will show latency of anywhere from 500 ms, 1000+ ms, even 2000+ ms. Download speeds from AT&T's speed test are 0.1 Mbps down, 0.01 Mbps up. I don't have AT&T's fiber, but normal speeds are 18-21 ms latency, 75-80 Mbps down, almost 20 Mbps up, I'm on the 75/20 internet plan. Can someone explain what's going on and how I can resolve it? Edit: The issue being bufferbloat makes perfect sense and I've gotten great explanations. Still no resolution as of the moment. Either support for my router will help to reduce this issue or I'm returning my router for something with better QoS to combat this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2019 06:24 PM PDT I'm going back and forth on where to drop new/existing ethernet wires. The Cat5 cables terminate downstairs right now in this box. I am fairly confident some of the runs are stapled to beams throughout the house. I was wanting to relocate everything upstairs to the top of this hallway closet. I only plan to have the ATT router, USG, poe switch, and cloud key in the closet. Do you think I will run into heat/ventilation issues? The location downstairs is in the master bedroom closet is fairly open with an air register in the closet. Either way, about 3 cables will either have to be run up the wall or down in order for everything to terminate in the same location. I think the upstairs location will give easier access for future expansion if needed, but I keep going back and forth on it. Thoughts and opinions welcome. [link] [comments] |
I don’t know much, but I knew enough to know something is wrong Posted: 29 May 2019 09:54 AM PDT Hi all, this question is mostly regarding my home's WiFi. I stream DnD on Twitch, and have no issues when connected via hardwire. However issues arise when anyone attempts to connect to the hardwired WiFi repeater, where there is not enough bandwidth for one device, let alone anything else. The repeated is connected directly to the modem on the opposite side of the house via a network hub nearby. All other hardwired devices run at the same speed. When connected, data download and upload varies wildly and does not behave at the advertised 70mb download 6mb upload. When connected directly to the modem's WiFi, none of these issues exist. Is the WiFi repeater bad? Is the switch bad? Is there too much CAT-5 between the modem and where the repeater is? Please ask any questions to clarify, I'm mostly clueless on this matter. Thanks for any help I can get [link] [comments] |
Cable guy spliced me into neighbors coax? Posted: 29 May 2019 04:31 PM PDT So my internet connection degraded and eventually dropped completely, which was narrowed down to an issue outside of my apartment. Cable guy couldn't get access to the room with the junction box(?) for all of the apartments, so he cut the coax line for the person living above me and added a splitter so now we both share that line (that line runs through a closet in my apt). Comcast has decided to not fix whatever the issue was and is leaving us hooked up like this. I have a few questions...
I would appreciate some helping clearing this up, because the foreign tech support doesn't understand what I'm asking because either they're not informed, or it's a communication issue. [link] [comments] |
The IQRouter helped tremendously with my Bufferbloat issues and slow internet Posted: 29 May 2019 09:18 AM PDT Hey all, I dont usually do posts like this but I wanted to let everyone know about my Bufferbloat experience. I'm in college and just moved in to my first apartment recently and have less than ideal internet (25mbps down and 1 mbps up). I've always experienced buffering while streaming and just sluggish internet in general. I decided to look here to figure out how to speed up my internet and saw that my issue might be bufferbloat. Lo and behold, I did a DSLReports test and I certainly had a bufferbloat problem. Now I'll admit I am not very computer literate. One of the popular suggestions here is the Ubiquiti Edgerouter setup because it has the QoS settings that need to be tweaked to my line, etc. I wasn't very comfortable with that so I tabled my internet equipment upgrade for a while as I searched for more solutions. I ended up looking at the website for Bufferbloat (https://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/bloat/wiki/What_can_I_do_about_Bufferbloat/), saw that the IQRouter was a suggestion AND it automatically tuned its settings. Sounded perfect to me. I ordered one on Amazon, set it up, and WOW what a difference it made. The setup was easy and when I ran into a connection issue the support at iqrouter helped me pretty quickly. My netflix hasnt buffered at all since I installed it and I can do way more at once on the internet, if that makes sense. I did a test with the optimization on and off. Before: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/50241200, After: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/50241116. I ended up getting another iqrouter for my parents home in Rural North Georgia with a DSL Windstream and it has helped them a ton too. I'm sure the Ubiquiti routers and other suggestions here work great, but none of those were "tech dummy" compatible. I just wanted to share my experience so I could maybe help some of the other people out there with bufferbloat issues! [link] [comments] |
Need a new router, but I have one in mind Posted: 29 May 2019 03:47 PM PDT I have a horrible Arris TG2472 which cuts outs like every 5 minutes with horrible ping spikes and randomly turning off. So I've been planning to upgrade. I found the Asus RT-AC86U/CA wireless router. Will that one be good? I am a gamer so I'd prefer low ping! My IPS is Cogeco and my speed is 120mb download, and 60mb upload. If you have any suggestions, I am open-minded! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Netgear Nighthawk R7000 -- intermittently slow wifi Posted: 29 May 2019 12:52 PM PDT For the last couple days, the 2.4Ghz band on my Nighthawk has slowed to ridiculously slow speeds (under 2Mbps, and last night down to 0.05Mbps). The 5Ghz band and hardwired ethernet are as speedy as usual, but sadly most of my internet connected devices are not 5Ghz-capable. Only a power cycle seems to restore 2.4Ghz to normal speeds (30Mbps+). Smart connect is off, and channel is Auto. Firmware is the latest version. I can't remember specifically when it was purchased, but it's several years old. The first time it happened I considered it a fluke, however when it happened a 2nd time yesterday I'm concerned there might be a more significant issue. The router is several years old, but I can't recall specifically when it was purchased. I know this isn't much to go on, but has anyone seen these types of symptoms before? Are there specific troubleshooting steps I should take? Or suggestions for resolving the issue? Thanks for any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Asus AC1900 Latency Variation/Ping Spikes Posted: 29 May 2019 07:56 PM PDT Owned for the Asus AC1900 router for 2+ years. On a hardwired connection, a month ago I started getting latency variation and ping spikes during multiplayer online gaming. I eventually tested from modem (SB 6183) direct into PC and the problem does not occur. Before I go out and buy a new router, are there any router settings I should check that might be contributing to this latency variation/ping spike problem? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Thinking of upgrading my internet speed. Is my equipment sufficient? Posted: 29 May 2019 11:01 AM PDT We currently have Mediacom 100 (100 mbps download with 1000 gb of data - we've gone over this limit a couple of times). There are 3 people in the house who use Wifi at any given time. We are cordcutters so all of our entertainment is in the form of WiFi devices. I am considering upgrading to Mediacom's 200 plan (200 mbps download and 2000 GB of data). Many times we've experienced buffering during shows, so I am hoping that faster speeds will fix that - but please correct me if I am wrong. I currently have a Netgear R6250 router and a Arris Surfboard SB6141 modem. Will these be sufficient if I do upgrade? Any help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Edgerouter ERLITE-3 price has dropped down to $98 Posted: 29 May 2019 09:00 AM PDT Hi all -- The price of the Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite ERLITE-3 on Amazon has dropped by almost 30% over the last few days. It's now at $97.63, by far the lowest price I've ever seen for it. (I use the Microsoft Personal Shopping Assistant extension in Chrome and Edge to track prices of different products, get alerts, etc.) I'm not sure how long it will stay there, though. Amazon prices tend to jump around a lot, probably to facilitate "price discovery", optimal pricing and so forth. If I understand correctly, the ERLITE-3 is much better than the X. Google installed G-Net Wifi and now nginx website won't connect Posted: 29 May 2019 07:30 PM PDT After having Google install a router which monitors wifi use when you connect in exchange for points (link) my nginx website hosting organizr gets a 523 error from cloudflare. I haven't changed any DNS settings which is what the error shows is incorrect, and after checking it seems good to me, but I'm not sure what if anything google did when adding the router. Just to clarify: before the installation, website worked. After the installation, the website errors out. Can anyone give tips on what they think is wrong and how I can fix it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2019 01:23 PM PDT I am using a modem-router combo provided by my cable company and was wondering if there were any workarounds to access my Wi-Fi settings if I can't access them with the traditional 192.168.0.1 address. [link] [comments] |
Good, Budget-Friendly Remote Desktop Apps? Posted: 29 May 2019 10:25 AM PDT Might be a weird question, but here we go. I recently bought my 60-something-year-old parents a new home computer (refurbished SFF business PC with Win10 Pro) and plan to set it up in the next couple of weeks. We live far enough apart that doing regular maintenance physically is virtually impossible, so I'm looking at good remote desktop implementations or apps to use. Setting up actual networked Windows Remote Desktop would be much more effort than its worth imo, but I have no real experience with other cloud-based RD apps. Any suggestions or advice? I'd like something that has a free tier or a relatively cheap tier (at or under $10/month). I need good security and encryption, and I need something that is reliable. Outside of that, I'm not picky. I do plan on setting up Private Internet Access on the computer, and I know that could cause issues with certain implementations/apps. Thanks guys! [link] [comments] |

Chromecast Issue with Home Network Stability - A little advice please Posted: 29 May 2019 12:16 PM PDT Hey all - I need some advice on increasing the stability of my home chromecast audio setup. I have multiple speakers through the house hooked up to a dayton audio 12 channel AMP. I have 5 google chromecasts driving 5 zones and some of the rooms are pass thru from my main chromecast uplink. I have about 10 rooms hooked up to the Dayton Audio Amp. There are several chromecast groups also ie "First floor common areas" etc... The problem I am having is that when I try to cast from my kitchen on my phone and try to send Pandora or Spotify to a group/chromecast, I can only see some of the chromecasts/groups. I sometimes have to toggle wifi on/off to see more. A little about my network setup. I have an Untangle next gen firewall appliance serving as firewall, gateway, etc... that connects to a layer 2 switch which connects to 3 Ubiquiti UAP Pros throughout the house. I am thinking that it's a problem with mDNS/Multicasting where the chromecasts are connected to a different UAP than I am on my phone and the Untangle gateway doesn't support igmp/MDNS and is causing issue communicating. Also, perhaps its a problem with me using 5ghz wifi on my phone and the chromecasts using 2.4? Any thoughts? Also, I am tossing the Layer 2 switch and am buying a layer 3 catalyst 48 port gigabit POE (3750) with home that I can configure multicasting on it. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2019 06:12 PM PDT Hi guys, i have a problem. Previously i got my router into bridge mode and it gave a public IP to the router like 200.xxx.xxx.xxx but now it gives an IP but it is not direct, example: Public internet ip: 200.xxx.xxx.xxx Router ip Wan interface: 100.70.xxx.xxx So i can not access my personal VPN anymore... I checked the router and it is in bridge mode... Can someone please explain to me what is going on? [link] [comments] |
Trashing Google WiFi... want to go with Ubiquiti Posted: 29 May 2019 05:58 PM PDT I have verizon FIOS and currently 3 Google WiFi pucks (primary in the basement, second on main floor, third on second floor). I have a few ethernet runs to support hardwiring these pucks. I experience random wifi drops with Google WiFi and I've reached my end. There is a lot of options to Ubiquiti hardware. I would like to have one wifi network using perhaps a Ubiquiti router and 2 access points. Is it necessary to add a POE switch for the APs? What's the basic equipment I need here to replicate what Google WiFi is supposed to do? 1 Mesh network with ethernet backhaul? [link] [comments] |
Provider, Modem, and Router for Apartment Posted: 29 May 2019 01:57 PM PDT Next month, I'll be moving into a 1,050 sq. ft. apartment in an area that has both Verizon Fios and Comcast available. I am new to all this and was wondering which service provider would be better. From what I've heard so far, Verizon Fios seems to be the better choice. That being said, I would like to get my own modem and router rather than use anything provided/rent from the service provider. A lot of advertise WiFi routers I've seen are for huge areas. Router has internet, but wifi doesn't work Posted: 29 May 2019 11:34 AM PDT I was given IP ranges (so input one of the IP out of the range), subnet, and gateway from my ISP. Using Netgear nighthawk. I input those into the router (because automatic setup failed). It signaled Internet: Good. On basic page, but it also seems to fail on speed test etc. I have an Ethernet cable running to my computer, I can login to router, but cannot access Internet through ethernet or wifi. Any ideas? Doubt about changing home router and buffer-bloat Posted: 29 May 2019 01:24 PM PDT Hi everyone, I have been checking some routers and videos how to setup it. But they always mention that I have to change my ISP router and I don't believe I am able to do that. I have a telekom contract in Budapest. My question is. Is it possible to let's say use EdgeRouter X, for ex, without changing my modem? I believe that must be a way to set it to control the traffic as router plugged to the ISP modem right? anybody has any directions for that? Also does anyone have telekom and use some sort of buffer-bloat controlling? How are you doing that? Thanks guys [link] [comments] |
How to set up moca network adapters Posted: 29 May 2019 01:08 PM PDT I just bought two moca network adapters, I know how to set up the one that goes in the room that needs Ethernet but how do I set up the one that connects to my router? The issue is that I have the modem hooked up to the coax port but it says that I need to hook the moca up to the coax port in order for it to plug into the router, so what do I do with the modem now? Netgear R6230 Works with One Modem But Not Another Posted: 29 May 2019 01:07 PM PDT I'm looking to upgrade my girlfriend's Netis WF2419 with a Netgear R6230. She has Suddenlink cable Internet service. This is a plain Jane setup with a customer-provided modem (ARRIS SB6183) and I can't for the life of me get the router to recognize it has Internet. I can take it to my office, which has a Suddenlink business line with a Suddenlink-provided modem, and the router performs as expected. Her modem and Internet service in general has worked fine for years--her desktop is plugged in via Ethernet--I'm just trying to address real lackluster wireless stability from the Netis. Any ideas? Her Netis is not spoofing any MAC addresses but I did trying spoofing the MAC address of the Netis on the Netgear. R6230 has the latest firmware. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Best way to network new house? Posted: 29 May 2019 09:15 AM PDT So I just found that we have blue cat5 cables behind every wall plate. They go up to the closet where the patch panel is located, but its a telephone patch panel using 1 pair from each individual run. There is one white cat 5 in the patch panel that goes to the demarc on the side of the house with all the other coax. Anyway, we have Spectrum service provider and the modem is hooked up in the office through coax. What I would normally do is: - Modem > Router > switch inside the patch panel The problem is that there is no power source near the patch panel to put a switch in. That's where I'm drawing a blank. The modem and router will be in the office from there I'll use a patch cable that goes from router to an rj45 wallplate which leads to the patch panel. Not sure where to go from here.
