I’m a networking noob looking to get into mesh. Need your expert help! Posted: 13 May 2019 10:21 AM PDT Need some help with my home Wifi. I am very well versed in all things tech BUT networking. I have as much understanding as how to set up an AP, how to edit some router settings.. that's it. My house:
Equipment:
Current issues:
I've read a little into Ubiquity's products and they seem like the perfect solution for a majority of my issues. Can someone please guide me as to what I need to purchase and maybe explain what each product does? I have tried to ELI5 networking but it's just not sticking. I really appreciate your help. 10g nic teaming / link aggregation on Windows Server 2016 / 2019 Posted: 13 May 2019 02:19 PM PDT I picked up a "MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN" and "Chelsio N320E" and "10Gbps DAC 3M" as prescribed in this video I ran 2 cables from the switch to 1 server (2016), and 2 cables from the switch to another server (2019), and a cat6 to my primary switch to the microtik's ethernet port. the IPs for all 4 of these adapters are on the same subnet (eg 192.168.1.0/24) the below behavior is the same on either OS: I installed the Chelsio driver (cxge3nic_toe-1.5.13.46) and teaming tool (chteam-2.0.1.9.exe) However, when using the chelsio chteamcfg utility, I get a BSOD when creating a team in ndis.sys in any of the team modes (LACP, backup, or load balance) I also tried using windows' built in nic teaming function, however I also am getting BSOD when enabling that. For giggles I also tried bridging the connections, and also got a BSOD. Is there a known compatibility issue with these cards? Am I doing something wrong? I just want to get these two servers talking to each other at 20G, can I bypass the switches altogether and create a direct link? [link] [comments] |

Suggestions for Long Range Extender? Posted: 13 May 2019 10:19 AM PDT I would like to extend wireless coverage to my detached garage at my apartment. The distance is about 175 feet. The signal would originate inside of the apartment, go through an outer wall, through another apartment, down 2 floors to the ground, then through another outer wall into a garage. http://imgur.com/gallery/Jlq23ZA I can't mount anything outside. Currently, I can pick up a slight signal on 2.4 ghz on my phone from my Archer C7 about 10 feet in front of the garage. There are so many options on Ubiquiti, that I'd appreciate some help with suggestions on where to start. Loco? 900mhz? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Best way to stop ping spikes to my PC Posted: 13 May 2019 07:02 PM PDT I have a question with regards to addressing an issue I have with my connection. Currently, I am set up on Wifi. I know wired connections are better but it's just not feasible in the situation I have (hallway and a half, stairs, another half hallway, all busy pathways) and I would like to fix it so that my connection is smooth for things like Discord and gaming. I am able to do things like stream videos just fine without issues. However, every 5 to 10 seconds, I get a massive ping spike to my router, upwards of a few seconds. These ping spikes make online gaming impossible and Discord chat very unwieldy. Before I buy anything, is there any method to reduce the ping spikes? I've disabled wifi searching but that didnt make a difference. As for what to buy, I dont know what would be a good pick. A wifi extender? Powerline adapter? Wireless access point? I dont know what would be best. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Help getting a stronger signal in my basement. Thinking about setting up an access point Posted: 13 May 2019 02:56 PM PDT I recently renovated my basement and realized I have terrible WiFi there. My room is in the basement so I want to move my Xbox and Smart TV into there. Right now I barely get any signal. I have Fios Gigabyte connection but my room is in the other end of the house and one floor down so I get like 5 Mbps if that. I want to have a wired connection for the Xbox so I can play online without lag. I tried buying a powerline adapter. The wired connection gives me like 60 Mbps but the wifi didn't improve. I read a few posts here and saw that most people recommend an access point. This is what I'm leaning toward now. I just want to make sure I have everything right. To do this Id have to drill a hole on the outside wall and run it along the side of the house to the basement, around 75 Ft. What ethernet cable would you recommend since this is going to be outside? I also need a recommendation for the router. And finally is this the best solution or is there something better? I've never done much handiwork so the drilling the hole and plugging it is going to all new to me. But if its nothing too hard and fixes my problem I'm fine with trying it. Thanks for your help. Is this enough wifi router for my modem speed? Posted: 13 May 2019 06:33 PM PDT Hi all, I've just signed up for 100 mbps spectrum internet, and I'm getting close to that, direct to PC. But my old linksys is only getting about half that. Is this newer, but kinda cheap, netgear wifi router enough for my needs? thanks! [link] [comments] |
Bought an old house and have internet questions Posted: 13 May 2019 09:27 AM PDT Hi, I'm living in the UK and I've recently purchased a new property. The previous owner was 92 years old, so as you can imagine the house is pretty out dated. They have never had internet, but had a working home phone. I think the phone line in the house was installed in the 90's (it's almost yellow?). The phone (line?) comes from a wooden pole out the back which runs in the roof and then it's run down from the loft, through the second floor and in to the ground floor to what looks like a really old phone socket. I'd want to have fibre broadband from Sky still. My questions are:
Thanks, I hope I've given enough detail to help answer my questions! [link] [comments] |
Fluctuating optical power on ONT Posted: 13 May 2019 06:54 AM PDT Apologies for the wall of text, but give it a read if you have time. I've been having issues with my ISP recently. I pay for 100 Mbps FTTH, and for the past few days it was wildly fluctuating between 4 and 50 Mbps. Literally random bursts up to 50, and then back down to 4. I called up the ISPs customer support but it was a Saturday afternoon, so they said we can't do shit till Monday and pretty much left it at that. ISP 'tech' visited this morning. The reason tech is written like that is because he was a moron, but anyway he came to check optical power stats on my ONT and Rx (1490 nm) was -10.68 dBm and Tx (1310 nm) was 2.28 dBm. He said it was too high, so he grabbed the SC/APC patch cord that comes from the fiber splice enclosure to my ONT, bent it and checked the power, it went up slightly to -12.2 dBm. The problem with the fluctuating speed was still there though. He then says he'll leave and get a SC/APC to SC/UPC patch cord instead since that has an effect on optical power levels. He goes, comes back, and the power with that is still -12 dBm, but without being bent. He then bends it, and ties up the bend tightly with a cable tie. Power is now at -21.67 dBm (Rx) but the fluctuating download speed is still happening. Anyway, at this point it was 5:30 in the evening and he was in a rush to go home so he left and said he'll notify network operations and they'll send someone again tomorrow. My ONT has this diagnostics feature which I used after he left and it showed Downstream packet loss: 429 packets. Before this issue started, it was never more than 8-10 packets. And now speedtests on my local ISP server still fluctuate between 40 and 80 Mbps, but running an actual download to a foreign server gives me a measly 3 Mbps. I have no faith in my ISP or any of their so-called technicians so I wanted to ask around here. Has anyone else experienced anything like this before, and if so, what caused it and how was it rectified? The ONT my ISP has supplied me with is an Alcatel Lucent G-240W-A. All replies will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
I can't connect to my new router Posted: 13 May 2019 08:17 PM PDT Hi, I got rid of my stock router and went with an ac 1750 model, I had it working on my computer and all other devices. Suddenly, today my computer can connect to the 5ghz connection but it says "no internet" can't find dns probe etc. My problem is this, I can connect to the 5ghz on my phone, tv etc and no problems! Is it possible that my wifi card inside of my pc (I believe it's an asus wifi card) is somehow broken now? The 2.4ghz connection from the same router is working fine on the computer, just not the 5ghz. Things I have tried: Power cycling modem/router, restarting computer, redoing settings of the router on the netgear app, considered buying a new wifi card. What else should I try? [link] [comments] |
Can you tell how fast the Arris RAC2V1A router is from the provided docs? Posted: 13 May 2019 08:14 PM PDT Hello all -- Spectrum offers a seemingly awesome router (made by Arris and others) but I can't tell how fast it is by the usual metric – e.g. 1200, 1750, 2200, etc. Those numbers refer to aggregate throughput in Mbps, I think by combining the throughput of different channels. You usually see them in a router's model name or listing title, but no such numbers are given for the Spectrum/Arris router. (I realize it may not be the single most important metric.) Here's the User Guide (PDF). Here's the WikiDevi page, which includes the chipsets, MIMO config, etc. Do any of these sources enable you to determine its speed by the usual reckoning? Thanks. Need help with camera and internet sharing network Posted: 13 May 2019 01:21 PM PDT Hello guys, I need help sharing an internet network to other routers and that router to share it on the other one. I plan covering multiple houses. First router (one of those small mobile routers with limited data) will be in a house #1 and then I plan using other router (TL-WR941ND) to share it to house #2 and use that router to share it to the router in the house #3 (TL-WR743ND). Houses do not have any LAN or WAN cables. I imagine you have to connect routers at first with pc or camera systems and I have a cable for that. Is something like this even possible and if it is, where should I start searching for a way to connect them? This system is supposed to share internet in multiple homes and send recorded videos from cameras to our home in other city. [link] [comments] |
Mysterious Connectivity Issues Posted: 13 May 2019 03:07 PM PDT Hey all. I've been having issues with my connectivity to the internet for the past couple of months that seems to have gotten worse with time. I've recently changed my ISP from Wave Broadband to Xfinity but the problem persists. Here's the hardware on the network: -Arris Surfboard SB6141 Modem -TP Link Archer A7 [Replaced an Archer C1200 thinking it was the problem, but I get the same results] -Apple TV -Phillips Hue Bridge -PlayStation 4 -2 iPhones [WiFi] -PC Workstation [WiFi] -Apple MacBook Pro [WiFi] Here's what usually happens. Devices are connected and running well. The "Internet Connection" LED turns orange, signaling that the router's port is connected but the internet is not available. Then, after a moment, everything goes off line. Apple TV streams freeze, but don't fully drop out to an "Apple TV is not connected to the internet" message. All devices remain on the network, even ones that are using the WiFi (iPhones and laptops) and things that are on the LAN still function fine (like the Hue bridge works when turning the lights on and off) but they are unable to get out to the internet. The Teather App that helps manage the Archer shows that there is no connection between the router and the internet via the modem. I have the router's address set to a Dynamic IP. I have tried to set the IP of the router to Static, but over time I get the same results. I have tried unplugging each piece of hardware from the router (if it is hard lined in) to see if that would change the environment and stop the problem, but that doesn't seem to do the trick. Both of my ISPs say that my connection is stable on their end and I have plugged my laptop into the modem directly and had success connecting, so blaming my ISP is out. I've also physically moved locations from an apartment to a small house with the same results, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the physical environment. I only say this because someone in another post that I made about this issue said it might be a problem with my modem's Modulation Error Rate and the lines outside of my apartment might be the issue, which they aren't since I have moved locations. The only temporary solution that seems to work is hard restarting the modem. I am starting to think that it is the bad actor in this whole thing. I would love to be able to fix and understand the problem with the modem instead of replacing it, if that is the case. I am starting to pull my hair out as this has been going on for a while and I haven't been able to fix it. My limited knowledge of networking is really holding me back, so I am hoping that you fine people will be able to help me! Let me know what you all are thinking. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2019 05:56 PM PDT Ok so first let me explain my home network: I have mediacom gig service Surfboard 3.1 modem (cant remember exact model) Feeding netgear nighthawk r7000 2 lines of the router go to 2 separate netgear r8000 switches 1 feeds another netgear switch (basic unmanaged switch) 1 feeds a netgear prosafe switch (not sure exact model) As none of these are true managed switches, only the r7000 controls routing. In the house we have 3 xbox ones, smart TVs, and pcs all hardwired thru the switches, the only thing on wifi are out phones and lightbulbs (I think there's only 2) My problem comes when trying to game with all of us at the same time. We originally had problems with getting kicked from battlefield v, but we only had 200 mbps service so I went ahead and turned the qos option on the router on and it seemed to solve the problem. Now that we have gig service, I had to turn qos off to get the correct speeds. And to my surprise the issues came back. As I understand qos is about controlling bandwith, but even at 200 mbps I shouldnt have been running into bandwidth issues. The next disconcerting part is that I put my xbox in the dmz and it turns out that solved the problem for me, but seeing as I can only have 1 thing in the dmz, I had to turn the qos back on so there would be peace in the house. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 May 2019 05:56 PM PDT Hi everyone, I am having a bad connection in my living room with my current set up due to a thick interior brick wall. I am trying to get a lag free connection on my Xbox and increase speeds on my TV for streaming. My house is set up similar to the drawing below. I am looking to try MoCA because power line didn't work well in my older house. Red line is current path of internet into the home, and green already has an existing coax cable through the brick. There is a splitter outside at the junction of red/green (ISP in - Red Out - Green Out). Is there any scenario where this could work with splitting the coax prior to entering the modem and attaching the MoCA to the coax or some other way without drawing any additional holes in my brick? https://ibb.co/R98pzZp [link] [comments] |
Old Linksys wireless router--not sure if it's rusty, or if I am Posted: 13 May 2019 05:44 PM PDT hey folks, I just pulled out my old linksys WRT54GS V7 wireless router, have had if for a few years in a box :) my internet at my new place, direct to my pc from the cable modem comes in at around 80 mbps, but when I put my linksys in the middle, I'm getting about half that. Is it just too old to get those speeds? Or am I too old to know how to hook it up right? thx! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 May 2019 11:58 PM PDT I've got my own cable modem that will provide internet (50MbPS) over ethernet. Back in the day I would just buy whatever router Bestbuy was selling, but I'd always run into problems with it frying during the year, or having large deadspots. That being said, I'm not trying to jump into the $150 range. I used to have some Linksys back in the day that I ran DD-WRT on and it worked great for years, and it wasn't expensive. Anyway, here are my equipments and use cases:
Use cases:
Although, I'f I'm being honest. I'm not exactly sure how I'll be getting my 7.1 audio to my receiver, as because right now I output it directly as DTS from optical to my receiver. But whatever, I can figure that part out later. Either way I just need to run all of this between the upstairs and the downstairs. So what I'm I looking at if I'm trying to keep my budget small? Any known models that could handle all of this? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 May 2019 11:09 AM PDT Just moved into a new house, my old ASUS RT-AC66U finally gave up the ghost so I am stuck using the Arris that came with Frontier temporarily. I considered doing some Ubiquiti AP's but decided, for now, I just wanted to get a single router. A friend recommended either Synology RT2600ac Nighthawk AC2300 Any opinions on which would be better? two story house with multiple devices, tv's and currently have a lot of issues with connectivity to the downstairs TV using the Arris and Roku? I appreciate any input, networking is something I don't have a ton of knowledge about. [link] [comments] |
Router suggestion that has good QoS or decent alternative Posted: 13 May 2019 01:04 PM PDT I'm thinking on buying a new router. I live in a somewhat small apartment so the range doesn't need to be huge. I use the network mostly for online gaming and streaming, so latency is a problem. Room mates sometimes download stuff with no limiter and it just drops my latency. I want a router that could help me with that, limiting a device or prioritizing my PC, or something like that. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Need help with choosing Mesh Wifi/home Network Posted: 13 May 2019 04:37 PM PDT 2300 sq ft, 400 of which is an attached mother-in-law suite that i will probably backhaul at a later date via moca as i can't get through the attic but even that might not work due to the house having a bunch of shitty coax splitters in the walls and attic so i may be stuck wifi only or professional install. Currently I don't want to spend more than $500 on this project. I'm more inclined to a mesh network only because i like the idea of not having dropouts while roaming my house but speed and reliability are really what I'm after. (I do game and media is streamed from every corner of my house and plan on getting a nas hooked up soon as well) I picked up an Orbi system that i haven't hooked up yet as i thought the satellites had ethernet but they dont so I'll be returning them but i catt decide between the Deco M9, Eero and Orbi. If there is something better I'd love to know. Max internet currently is 150 but I'm hoping for gigabit in the not too distant future (who knows) so i want to future proof myself at least a little bit. I'm interested in a system that will work with VPNs. I heard Eero was the best but they were bought by Amazon so perhaps they aren't as privacy centric as they claim anymore? I would also like to be able to add home automation in the future. Am i asking too much? Is my price point too low? Whats my best option here? Any help woild be greatly appreciated. Split Wired and Wireless output from modem? Posted: 13 May 2019 04:23 PM PDT Recently I subscribed to Spectrum's 200mbps service. Upon receiving the in-home install kit, spectrum's E31U2V1 modem, I plugged my ethernet cable directly into the modem connected to my PC and was able to get the full 200mbps on fast.com. After hooking up my Wise Tiger WT-RT8501 router, and plugging my ethernet cable from the router to my computer, I was getting 90 bmpbs on fast.com. As a side note my 5Ghz wifi benchmark is around the same. I understand that probably this bottlenecking is due to the router, correct? This is where my naive question comes in for home networking, and b/c there is only 1 network port coming from the modem, is there anyway to "split" the port such that it becomes 2 ports, 1 directly into my PC such that it gets close to the 200mbps wired speed (bypassing the router bottleneck), and 1 into my router which will distribute the remaining bandwidth to my wifi devices? Thanks all in advance. [link] [comments] |
