Charter data use “rising rapidly” as cord cutters average 400GB a month Posted: 01 May 2019 01:19 PM PDT Found this article about personal home internet use and thought I would share. They do show a major difference between those who subscribe to both traditional TV service and internet verses those who just subscribe to internet and do streaming. [link] [comments] |
Correct name for a POE Ethernet Switch? Posted: 01 May 2019 06:33 PM PDT Ok, so the distribution box (I believe that's what it's named) in my new apartment doesn't have any power source close to it. There's Ethernet ports on each room of the house that all run into that distribution box. I'd like to be able to connect all the Ethernet ports to my network if possible, and I was planning on using an Ethernet Switch I already own, but then I found out there's not power near the box... So I'm trying to find a Power Over Ethernet switch that I could use. So far all my searches for a POE Ethernet Switch all just show a switch that supplies POE to devices, but still needs to be plugged into a wall. Can anyone point me in the right direction for an ethernet switch that accepts POE and does not need to be plugged into the wall? Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Help with proper router connection in my new places patch panel Posted: 01 May 2019 05:58 PM PDT Hi, I recently rented a new place and noticed that the already in place network setup is slightly more than I am comfortable dealing with. I have a patch panel in which I can see that the modem data (yellow) terminates in the cat5e termination module. I believe the blue cables are the runs to several locations in the apartment. I would like to plug my router in here somewhere directly so that the blue runs will be connected to my LAN instead of directly to the modem. I am not completely sure how to do this. Here's the 2 options I have thought might work so far.
I have an Edgerouter X if that helps. Any help or information would be appreciated. I've been looking at the manual for the cat5e termination module and haven't really gotten anywhere. Thanks! Edit: My isp in my apartment does not require a modem. I am assuming they use a central one for the entire building. [link] [comments] |
What kind of reverse proxy do I need? Posted: 01 May 2019 06:47 AM PDT I am in the process of rebuilding my home environment and I am at the stage where I am evaluating what kind of reverse proxy I need. Besides the ability to proxy web-based services such as Nextcloud and Guacamole, I want an ability to proxy arbitrary things, such as game servers. Ease of integration with Let's Encrypt is also a must. Been doing some reading on the subject but seem to be getting lost. Am I understanding this right that while nginx can do http/https and some additional protocols with plugins, I cannot expect it to be able to just work with a random arbitrary thing, lets's say a Quake server? Am I also understanding it right that some proxies such as traefik, only work with applications and do not even do http/https? Is there some sort of a catch-all solution? [link] [comments] |
Internet drops out randomly on one (or a couple) of devices after a few of minutes of use. Posted: 01 May 2019 07:30 PM PDT So I know there are a whole bunch of posts on this subreddit, and other forums about of connection drops, but I've been searching all over google about my issue and I am still unable to find a fix for this. I've been trying everything for the past 3-4 months and it's driving me insane. I'm open to try anything right now or for any suggestions. I would've moved along time ago from where I'm living, but it just hasn't been possible. So I have been stuck with this issue for a while now. Problem: Internet drops out randomly on one (or a couple) of devices on my home network (not at the same time), cannot get connection until I reconnect later, and even then it's not guaranteed. This means that sometimes I am surfing the web on my phone, and after a couple of minutes I would have no access to the internet, but I am perfectly able to browse reddit or netflix on my computer, or on my roomate's phone/laptop, which are connected to the same network. This connection drop can happen to any device at some point. This lately has been happening every single day and it's never at a consistent time. It can happen like 50+ times throughout the day (no, I am not exagerating), the next day it can happen just a few times at night, and then go a week literally with no issues at all, for it just to come back again after that. Sometimes when I'm playing videogames and the connection drops out, I can still see the players running around like nothing is happening, but I cannot move or do anything. I can even hear the voice chat if they are talking, but they can't hear me. This happens for a good 5-10 seconds before my connection drops out completly. This also happens on discord where I can hear my friends still talking but I cannot communicate back. So what I'm assuming from just this, is that, in the last few seconds of connectivity, I am recieving packets, but not sending them. This connection drop is obviously not something that only happens while gaming. I could be just looking at reddit, text forums, watching netflix or even sometimes I would just let my computer idle and connection would still drop randomly. The Setup: Setup is a little bit weird. I live in a student's home, kinda like dorms. Here we have 4 rooms, meaning that the amount of people using the same network at the same time is probably MAX around 6-7, but it usually stays clear throughout the day. The router (a Huawei HG8245Q2) is on the first floor, and my room is on the second floor. Here I use a 300Mbps AV500 Wi-Fi Powerline Extender TL-WPA4220, and my computer is connected to it by ethernet cable, also meaning that me and my roomate are the only ones connected to this device. I thinks it's worth mentioning that I've never had a problem with speeds or with ping by being connected to this extender when it's working properly. I literally get the same mbps and latency as I would if I was next to the router (I have made the test a buch of times in the past). Also the reason I mentioned that I live in student dorms is that, as you may have guessed, I can't just go and change my router at free will just like that. While the owner is nice and tries to help with anything possible, it's just not that easy to be switching routers and configurations directly or physically. Though, I am able to access the router's interface via computer browser (192.168.x.x). Things I've already tried:
Things that have given me a temporary solution:
I hope I didn't miss any crucial details while writing this. Also, apologies for any grammar mistakes and/or word repetitions. I can provide any extra information if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Client > Wireguard > VPS with VPN client. How to route? Posted: 01 May 2019 03:20 PM PDT Hey guys. I'm running a Wireguard server on a VPS running Ubuntu. It provides me with an easy way out of my universities heavily firewalled network and also with DNS filtering using Pi-Hole. I don't like having my server's static IP exposed to too many services so therefor I would like to route the Wireguard traffic through a VPN in addition. In detail, I would like to have the wireguard traffic reaching the VPS enter the OpenVPN client that I would equip with login details for my VPN provider. I would then effectively be connected to the VPN with my wireguard client. My network would look like this: Client device |---wireguard tunnel---> VPS |---OpenVPN client---> Internet Bold parts are devices. |---XXX---> marks a network connection. How would I go about forwarding all traffic that is coming from the wireguard tunnel to the OpenVPN server? Assume that the wireguard interface is called wg0, the VPS's network interface to the outside world is called eth0. If you're wondering why I would want to do that: understandably, the university I attend has a very strict firewall in place. I am able to tunnel out of the network with Wireguard though. Why not use OpenVPN on my clients in the first place? There are at least four reasons for that. 1) I also want DNS filtering via Pi-Hole. 2) Wireguard is stateless, e.g. a connection to the server is established every time a client connects to the internet in any way. 3) Wireguard is using way less resources compared to OpenVPN. 4) Wireguard uses far less power on mobile devices. Thanks a lot in advance! [link] [comments] |
AP Router cannot be connected directly through ethernet Posted: 01 May 2019 06:47 PM PDT Hi, I have successfully set up a second router as an AP by changing it's IP address, disabling it's DHCP server, and plugging in an Ethernet cable between the two routers' LAN ports. I can connect via wifi to the second router perfectly, but for some reason when I connect from the LAN port to my desktop's ethernet, there's no light on that port on the router, ipconfig says nothing is connected, and router dashboard also doesn't detect it. Any ideas on what to do? All of the LAN ports light up when I plug in the router to router cable and the desktop gets internet if I plug in the primary router directly. Also when the desktop boots, both the desktop ethernet and router LAN port do light up, but turns off before the windows login screen. I might just get a wifi usb thing... Second router is an old Linksys E1200 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2019 06:28 PM PDT Hello r/HomeNetworking. I am new here and was wondering if I could get some advice. I'm currently in the process of moving into my first apartment and I am trying to find the best router for the 900sqft apartment. I was looking into the google wifi or possibly the linksys AC-1750 or maybe the TP-Link Archer C2300? But I honestly have no clue what I'm doing here. Most of what I do is game and stream tv so I was hoping for some help as to what I may need. [link] [comments] |
Network [Spectrum Modem, TP Link Archer 2300, Apple Airport Extreme], issues with Google Home Posted: 01 May 2019 06:20 PM PDT Hi homenetworking! I have a relatively new set up due to my ISP (Spectrum)'s demand that I upgrade equipment, and I'm running into some problems. I live in an apartment with concrete walls, and a single router in the living room cannot reach the back bedroom. So, the desired setup is modem and router in the living room connected via Ethernet through a powerline adapter to a second router in the bedroom acting as an access point. I have set up a tp-link Archer router as my main router, and it functions beautifully. I set up an AirPort Extreme in the bedroom. However, when I go through the setup process, airport utility will not recognize that I am extending by ethernet. Instead it wants to create a new Wi-Fi network. Apple support has told me that that is how this router sets up an access point, as it will end up being in bridge mode anyway. I did that, calling the network by the same SSID and using the same password. The signal seems to be working, and devices connect to it and have internet access, but there's a problem. I have Google Homes spread throughout the house. Any Google Home in the living room connecting directly to the main router has no problems. The ones in the bedroom, however, will not broadcast music consistently or at all. Is the problem I'm running into that the Apple routers cannot act as true access points and therefore the Google homes don't recognize that they are in fact on the same network? Or, have I done it wrong and there are settings that I can mess with to make this work? Or, am I not asking the right questions...? [link] [comments] |
Tired of this Google Fiber Box Posted: 01 May 2019 06:00 PM PDT OK so I've looked in to it a bit as to what is required to remove the Google Fiber box. From what I've seen the minimum I need to do is enable VLAN tagging and give VLAN ID 2 a priority of 3. I have a TEG-160WS (Version C2.0R) and a Asus RT-AC88U. Unfortunately from what I'm seeing, the Asus won't be able to do full speeds on it's own and the TEG-160WS seems to be missing the correct options to set the proper VLAN priority. I may just be missing it on the TEG-160WS however since I'm not familiar with the interface. Basically I wanted to figure out what the optimal way to configure the network would be if I want the Asus router handling the DHCP/WiFi/etc and hopefully avoiding a bunch more hardware. I also looked at the GS105Ev2 in case I would need a different switch to handle the VLAN settings but I'm not sure that would do it as the recommended hardware is a GS108TV2. Anyone have some advice for me here? [link] [comments] |
prob dumb question want to ask for best home network security Posted: 01 May 2019 05:58 PM PDT is it possible to use an ethernet to connect to the internet without paying for an isp or monthly fee, I have heard comments of tethering, which would require a phones data to use which would run out, or an adapter to connect to access internet, also hear of DC ++, but have no idea how to use any of this, or an RJ45 port or RJ45 wan uplink, basically what would be the most secure, and cheapest option, or usb type c or gigabit adapter, and have heard to use ethernet in safe mode on windows, or safe mode with networking, but could u use safe mode and use apps or downloads with that, thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2019 08:48 AM PDT If I wanted to split my home, for example, into 2 network, is there some reason I wouldn't just use 192.168.1.0/24 for the first part and 192.168.10.0/24 for the second part? Is this still considered subnetting, or would it be considered that I have two networks? [link] [comments] |
Just noticed a Wideband Attenuator in the back of my cable modem (Virgin Media) - Do I need this? Posted: 01 May 2019 05:05 PM PDT So about a month ago Virgin Media replaced our router as we had really bad up & down spends, we have a Super hub 3 & I just noticed that we now have a wideband attenuator going into the back of the modern the the cable, cable screwed into that So we need the wideband attenuator? The reason I ask is upstairs the wireless singles is awful & the homeplug / poweline adaptors are very slow & drop connection a lot. We're on 200mb Internet My laptop hardwired into the router is around 180-200mb download and wireless is around 100mb but up stairs that drops Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2019 01:14 PM PDT Just clarify when I ping the virtualbox dhcp server, which I didn't setup other than create a new network, from one of the virtual machines, the terminal in the vm does nothing. Why is this? Also when I ping the adapter the same thing happens, what is an adapter? also all machines are on 10.0.2.X. But the dhcp is on 192.168.56.X [link] [comments] |
Orbi & Arris Channels and Overload ? Posted: 01 May 2019 04:55 PM PDT Hey there, I just upgraded my network from a combo 300mbps Netgear to the Orbi RBR20 (App: 2.3.1.37) with an ARRIS Surfboard SB6190 1.4Gbps DOCSIS 3 32x8. I was just on the app and realized that I have 8 devices logged on with 1 wired. I live in a small 1 bedroom 850 sqft, so I know it's more than powerful to cover that area. I do not have the satellite connected. I have 150 mbps Xfinity. 2 Fire Tvs - Always connected, but maybe not streaming 2 Apple Tvs - 1 bedroom not streaming all the time and 1 in living room streaming all the time 1 Printer - Not always printing but connected 1 Xbox - Apple tv off if I am playing but Fire tv on 1 Eco - Always doing its thing 1 Laptop - Always doing something 1 Phone - Always connected Are all those devices connected gonna slow down the network? I wish I could connect the xbox as well but don't have a slot with the modem connected. I honestly only have 1 fire tv, 1 apple tv, 1 laptop, 1 phone, that are always doing something. Whether streaming or browsing. [link] [comments] |
Should i get mesh wifi or a router thats strong enough to cover all my house? Posted: 01 May 2019 04:47 PM PDT so right now my current wifi situation is using an 5th gen aiport extreme, and i live in a 900sqft house and the router is currently located in living room along side the modem from att,and usually my location where i get mt wifi reception is my room which in the back, when i usually on my phone or any other mobile device i tend to get a weaker signal because it has to penetrate through 2 walls, the first one is the one dividing the kitchen and other is my room.right now im trying to decide if i should get a regular router thats stronger like a ubiquiti unifi hd or mesh wifi routers but the thing is i heard it would reduce my speeds to half.usually i get around 500 down and up because i have gigabit internet from att fiber;and i want to use mesh but it'll slow my speeds since it uses multiple nodes as APs and would rather one single router that can cover it all . Combining multiple ADSL points to 1 SSID Posted: 01 May 2019 04:42 PM PDT Hi, new to this subreddit and hoping I can get some help. I live in a unit in a townhouse which has multiple ADSL termination points in each unit (10 units in total), and each unit has its own router and SSID/password combination. All of us residents agreed to share wifi across the entire townhouse to increase coverage in common areas Is it as easy as changing everyone's router SSID and password to the same thing? Posted: 01 May 2019 09:06 AM PDT So, I currently have a smart hub 2 (still have a smart hub 1; but it's not in use) The BT smart hub 2 is seriously lacking features, no guest networks, no vlans for the lans and overall MEH... Anyway, I am looking to replace it with either a R7000 or a R8000 with advanced tomato. I am wonder, how would it hold up against the Smart hub 2? Is this feasible: - (Port 1) Smart hub in another room connected via VLAN to use as a wifi repeater. The smart hub on a VLAN so it can't access my NAS and computers (Port 2) on another VLAN - A Virtual wifi separate from my guest networks and main one, which can only connect to say WLAN Port 2 NAS and Computers (I have important things on them that I only want to have access to) Thanks for any help. PlusNet Hub One vs TP-Link WR940N Posted: 01 May 2019 12:04 PM PDT Long story short this is for casual use by my non-tech-savvy family. In-home use with no particularly fancy tech stuff going on. My family got the Hub One from their ISP when they started their new contract with them. AFAIK such routers are notoriously cheap and crappy so am wondering if the TP-Link WR940N which is gathering dust in my cupboard (and which I'll admit is a fairly cheap and basic piece of kit) will make a noticeable improvement over it or whether they'd be better off sticking with their current setup? huge spike in data usage after switching to xfinity modem Posted: 01 May 2019 03:15 PM PDT 2 months ago we switched from my own netgear cablemodem to the one that came with xfinity. We went from an average of 320ish gb's per month to over 1tb. Nothing else has changed in the house but all of a sudden our usage is off the charts. This could be a coincidence I guess but I want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar? I already threw away the older cable modem so I can't put it back in and try. I've heard you can put a box (i've got extra machines lying around plus a beast of a home server) between the switch and the router to watch traffic to see where the usage is coming from. Most of the usage is hard wired usage so i can't look at xfinitys wifi stats. What would anyone suggest for this? Really struggling with this one. [link] [comments] |
Anybody familiar with the D-Link DGS-1510-20 Switch? Posted: 01 May 2019 03:12 PM PDT Hi Folks Just wondering, is anybody familiar with this switch https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00H554JL4/ Is it fussy about the SFPs? I'm probably going to buys a couple of these: Which includes SFP terminated cables, so I'm trying to judge if the included cable will work out of the box. Also, could somebody please point me in the direction of the type of the type of fibre cable I would need to purchase. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 May 2019 10:50 AM PDT Hey all, I am thinking of replacing my DIR-890L/R for another router. I am thinking of purchasing the Razer Sila or another router brand. I've been a DLINK user for more than 10 years. My first router is a Dlink which is the Dir-655. I read some reviews but am still not sure. I'm not much of a router tech savvy. Came here to ask you all for your opinions and recommendations. I mostly game on the Xb1 and there are a lot of streaming from my household. Am I downgrading myself? [link] [comments] |
