Looking for a battery efficient laptop that can play light/medium games for around 1000 USD

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:33 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

-1000 USD can push up to 1200 USD if I am swayed

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

    - A laptop that has good battery life/ last above 7 hours websurfing, youtube, etc.

How important is weight and thinness to you

-Not that important, lighter is better

    Which OS do you require?

    -Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size?

    -13+

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

    Light gaming and programming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    - Games like overwatch, skyrim, fortnite, etc at low/medium-ish settings and 60fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    -Reliable build quality and design

    -Discrete graphics card

Rather not have a super gamer like design

Laptops that I have looked at are:

XPS 15 - I heard during gaming that the laptop gets really hot

MSI GS65 - A bit outside my budget range and read that it has cooling issues and the chassis is not that strong

MSI P65 - Pretty sure this is the same as the GS65, but the white looks pretty cool

Razer Blade 15 GTX 1060 - Also a bit outside my budget, and read mixed reviews on the quality control

Huawei Matebook X - Probably the best of the bunch, but the mx150 seems kind of weak

HP Spectre - No discrete graphics card unless i spend way more

Lenovo yoga 730 - battery subpar because of the 4k panal

Samsung Notebook 9 pro - Has anyone had any experience with this?? Not that many reviews but it has AMD radeon 540 and a pen display

Any Input/Experiences with these devices would be greatly appreciated

Searching for powerful laptop for electronic music production and some gaming

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:53 PM PDT

    * Total budget and country of purchase: $2,000-$4,000 ideally on the lower side of that range

    * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. no

    * How important is weight and thinness to you? not important. Design and appearance does matter to me though.

    * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Pro

    * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17"

    * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes I primarily produce electronic music using FL Studio and Pro Tools. Second to that I spend a lot of time running multiple runelite clients to play Old School RuneScape which tends to get demanding on CPU. I also play League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm and Starcraft II. I do use CAD and some video editing software but not as frequent as the audio software mentioned earlier as well as running multiple Runelite Clients.

    * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Runelite (client of OSRS, running at least 4 or more at a time). Highest settings preferred. I do also run emulators (Dolphin and N64 games, Wii games preferably on higher settings).

    * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Certainly want a great quality laptop. I use computers every day. Plenty of USB ports preferred. Definitely need 1/8" headphone/mic jack

    * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I just ordered this laptop from ASUS. Not sure if there is something out there better suited for me. As far as gaming I do not go crazy with graphics and games. I'm not playing XBOX games or any high end FPS games. Mostly just multiple runelite clients. Here is the link to the laptop I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CCZXSLW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Should I cancel the order and consider something else?

College student looking for his next laptop. Needs to be able to edit videos, do regular college things (web browsing, writing papers, etc) be fairly portable/durable, have decent amount of storage (at least 500GB), and do some light gaming. Budget is around $1000.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:57 PM PDT

So I'm a freshman in college and the laptop that I got at the beginning of the year (Dell Inspiron 5577 Gaming) is already broken. Half the screen doesn't work properly, the chassis is literally falling apart, and the USB doesn't recognize my mouse anymore.

Looking into my next laptop now. I've been looking at the HP Pavilion Gaming, but if you have any better suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 USA *

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money, good battery life is a plus but not necessity*

How important is weight and thinness to you? Must be reasonable, around 5lbs *

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows *

Do you have a preferred screen size? 13-15.6 inches. I'm in college so I have to bring it to class, so it can;t be too big.*

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop Pro, Overwatch, some steam games*

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Don't really care about graphics, just had to look decent and run at a solid frame rate.*

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, backlit keyboard, decent speakers, appropriate ports (USB, HDMI, SD card reader, etc)*

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The cheaper the better, but I know when looking for this type of laptop, it's safer to go for a better quality laptop for a higher price.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care at all.

Is this $1349 RTX 2060 laptop a good deal? If not, what are some other medium to high end ~$1500 gaming laptops?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:00 PM PDT

Laptop I'm asking about: MSI GV63

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget of up to $2000 if something is a much better deal but would strongly prefer under $1500, in the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer best specs for the money, with good battery life being a minor plus. I don't plan to use the laptop for extended periods of time unplugged.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important, but is a small concern.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 inch screen fits best into my backpack.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most demanding games/programs I currently plan to run are Monster Hunter World and RPCS3 (the PS3 emulator, I don't actually know how demanding this is, but my current laptop can't run it).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? In Monster Hunter World, I want 1080p 60 fps at medium to high settings. Is this reasonable for the budget?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I also plan to play osu! (a rhythm game) and as such want a >100Hz display. A good keyboard is a secondary concern, not as important though. Based on my use patterns on my current laptop, I also want at least 16 GB RAM and an SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The laptop I have been considering is the MSI GV63 which seems to be a really good deal for its specs. However, I can't find any reviews for the RTX 2060 configuration, and the Amazon reviews include a lot of people complaining about driver or hardware issues in the 1050Ti version. Is this potential reliability tradeoff worth the apparent great value? Is there some hidden catch I'm missing that makes this not as good a deal as it seems?

I was considering the Lenovo Y740 when the RTX 2070 MaxQ version was about the same price, but that deal ended. Given how highly upvoted that deal was on /r/buildapcsales, and the fact that the RTX 2070 MaxQ seems to be not far ahead of the RTX 2060 (if at all), I'm hoping that this deal will make me feel better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CPU intensive Programming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - Looking for a very good keyboard and best quality display.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. How much of a bump in performance will the 9th gen intel mobile processors be? I am willing to wait till the end of this year if the bump is around 20% for i5. I was thinking of getting the Surface Laptop 2, please suggest any other good alternatives(I dont need a touch screen).

    Best for $300 or Under

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:21 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $300, Canada
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Looking for 1080p, would like a touchscreen but no means a dealbreaker if it doesn't have it.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. Mainly for home use.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Negative

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a good screen and speakers above anything else. But at this price I'm not super picky.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It's mainly just gonna be for surfing the net and streaming video.

Trying to choose between the ASUS ROG Strix Scar or Scar II

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:44 AM PDT

If you had to honestly choose based on thermals alone. I have a question I cannot find an answer to any where. I am torn between the ASUS ROG Strix Scar and Scar 2. The Scar is more appealing to me imho. Also in regard to the GTX 1070. I know the Scar 2 had the GTX 1070 in addition to the RTX 2060. Which has better thermals? Also the Scar 2 drops the extra fan that the Scar had, which makes me wonder about those thermals with the 1070 especially. Basically if you had to choose between: Scar (GTX1070) or Scar 2 (GTX1070) or Scar 2 (RTX2060) on mostly thermals before undervolting and performance, what would you choose? People please chime in because for the past 3 days I have spent 10 hours trying to compile data and the internet is just too deep lol

    Ultrabook that can handle GIS

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:27 PM PDT

I currently have the original Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon (8GB RAM, Intel Core i7-3667U, 256GB SSD), which still works nice for most tasks, but it struggles with ArcMap and is physically about to fall apart after poor warranty service destroyed all the fasteners and screws.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000 USD is my preferred price point, but I can stretch to 1500 USD. I'm in the US.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      • Ability to handle ArcGIS and QGIS is my #1 priority.
      • A full physical keyboard is a must (e.g. no Surface type cover), but 2-in-1s are OK.
      • I need the battery to last me a school day for basic word processing and notetaking.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? <5 lbs strongly preferred
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Pro (or option to upgrade)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No larger than 15" class. Would consider as low as 13" if the price is right.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • Microsoft Office
      • ArcGIS
      • QGIS
      • Potentially AutoCAD infrequently
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't game at all.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • A solid state drive is a must-have.
      • I'm pretty careful with my electronics, but this will be in my backpack. It needs to hold up to the pressures of being squeezed between textbooks and my back.
      • Touch screen is unnecessary but I'm not opposed.
      • I'd like to have a USB-C port, but that isn't a must-have.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am not considering Huawei or Lenovo machines.

Laptop for college (capable of gaming)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:40 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000 USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Long battery life, **not super flashy**, capable of running most games
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I would have to take it to class with me daily.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" would be ideal
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Gaming, Eclipse
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CSGO, Overwatch, Destiny 2, Fallout, PUBG, Seige.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Plenty of IO ports would be nice (dongle free)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking at Lenovo legion Y530/Y730 but the only drawback to me is the 5 hour max battery life. I don't want any laptops with flashy and unnecessary features (weirdly shaped designs, crazy looking logos). I've had the same generic Acer aspire V for about 7 years now, and since I'm going off to college and won't have my desktop, I need something capable.

    Rugged / Somewhat powerful laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 09:16 PM PDT

Looking for a somewhat powerful / somewhat rugged laptop suggestion.

It would be used for truck driving / quickbooks / banking / random dispatch software / invoicing / microsoft word / possibly entertainment. Battery life seems useful but I have 12v chargers available all the time ontop of a 1200w inverter, so I don't think it's that important.

What I mean by "somewhat powerful" is that I fucking hate laggy 300 dollar laptops I see in stores. I can't stand waiting for shit to load / the appearance of latency input or display latency.

Price not really an issue at all, so lay it on me.

(for example, my desktop is an i7-6700k w/ a gtx 1070 and 32 gigs of ram and ssd storage) and i am seeking a laptop with similar performance?

US, $2000 or less, high performance

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:12 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

$2000, USA (willing to pay a bit more for a great fit)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Reliability is highly important

Best specs for the money is highly important

Good battery life is of medium importance

    2-in-1 is not very important

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Light weight is pretty important. Thinness less important

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

N/A (Have MS OS and Apps Pro version license)

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

13.3" would be minimum, but N/A other than that.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I launch 50+ browser tabs, run the full MS Office suite, switching back and forth between Excel, Word, PPT, Outlook, OneNote and Visual Studio (all desktop versions) and do some coding in Visual Studio

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Light gaming: the only intense video demand is Runescape on a crowded world. Not familiar with fps settings, so 24 sounds fine? Probably could use discrete graphics, but a lower-end card will probably suffice.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Highly desirable: Reliable build quality, Touch-screen

Desirable: backlit keyboard, nice keyboard feel, spill-resistant

    Nice to have: fingerprint reader

I'm pretty sure a 6-core CPU, like the i7-8750H paired with lower-end discrete graphics is good enough for me. I see these on $1000 laptops, all the way up to $2000 and beyond, so understanding what I'm paying for would really help.

I'm willing to buy RAM and add it as long as this is possible, so paying > $250 for 32GB RAM vs. 16GB doesn't make sense unless the DIMM slots are full and non-replaceable.

I don't want a loud machine, so if the fan is on only when under high stress, that's fine.

256GB SSD is enough since I have a home NAS. Also, I have a spare 2TB NVMe drive and a spare 2TB SATA drive that I could use for either my laptop or desktop, so please take that into account. Advice on a complementary desktop system would be useful too.

    Thanks!

    P.S. I can get a MS employee discount on Lenovos, but e.g. the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme i7-8850H GTX 1050Ti 16GB RAM 512GB SSD 15.6" UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS multi-touch at $2,100 doesn't look all that special.

I need a laptop with an awesome battery life (around 10 hours) and great specs for the price!

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Does not matter much, lightweight and thin is always a plus for sure!

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    WINDOWS

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inch for sure !

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to be able to play with 60 fps, but I don't mind lowering the specs to medium.

Great keyboard, a reliable build quality, overall great specs, but no need for 4k/touch-screen

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am mostly looking for a powerful laptop that could last me 3-4 years. I did my research before posting this. I know that MSI PS63/DELL XPS 15/THINKPAD X1 EXTREME could be great choice, I just need advice to be sure of getting a great laptop for 2000 CAD!

Looking for portable laptop to play HD video on tv

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:28 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** ~$500 (Looking for best deal to get the job done but flexible for most bang for the buck)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Portability (smaller size), battery life a plus

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight and thinness not important, prefer smaller screen.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Prefer under 15", smaller size for portability.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No. Simple video editing would be a plus

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Large hard drive for storing video files.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Basically looking to replace a Toshiba NB205 (10.1") for torrenting and play back on 55" UHD tv. This little notebook has worked great and is portable but it can't play 1080 videos. The smallest options I find are Surface pros but they lack storage space (don't need SSD) and are expensive.

    Replacing Surface Pro 4

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:55 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm going into my Junior year of college and my i5 8GB Pro 4 isn't cutting it anymore. It dies after about 3 hours of working or I need to gimp it's performance to squeeze out an extra hour.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200 is what I'm looking at. Probably gonna buy on eBay.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't think I prefer a 2in1, but it would be nice considering I still have a good Surface pen. Good spec/price ratio is a much higher priority than that though.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't care too much about either, but I would like something of similar build quality to the surface.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows. Will eventually dual boot Linux onto it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15in. Can stretch budget to $1200 if I have to.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I plan on running JetBrains IDEs and Eclipse for the most part. Eventually going to do some data analytical stuff so I think that includes TensorFlow and stuff.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Very casual games like Slay the Spire and civ 6.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I really want a good keyboard I kind of hate the Surface Pro one. I'd like there to be some modularity so I can add RAM or more storage, but it's not a deal breaker if it doesn't have it. I'd love something that feels nice though since $1000 is gonna hurt a little.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was looking at the MateBook X Pro and it looks perfect. I could compromise for the 13in screen but are there any laptops similar to that one with that extra 2 inches?

[Asking for Advice] $2500 budget for a data scientist PC

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:10 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    • $2,500 before tax, US.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • No 2 in 1 or touch screen.
    • Battery Life should hopefully be 6 Hours for medium workload (browsing, emailing, coding).

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not too important, but it shouldn't be too heavy either. (Should be able to bring it to the flight and work on the plane)

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows Pro 10, with the option to run Linux.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 14 inch - 15.6 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • I Use Lightroom for photo editing.
    • IntelliJ for java development. Code should compile and run fast.
    • Spyder. I am a data scientist in training (and currently a PhD candidate) working with large datasets (10 GB+). I also use multiprocessing in my research and the PC needs to be able to do multiprocessing for at least 24Hours continuously.
    • Fast internet browsing with apps running in the background (Slack, Spotify)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Should be able to play divinity original sin 2 smoothly, high at 60 FPS.
    • Play RTS/Simulation/Indie games

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • No touch screen.
    • Screen: Not reflective/must be matte. At least 1920 but prefer higher than FHD.
    • Finger-print reader is not a must.
    • Require a good keyboard and responsive touchpad.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Fan noise could be a turnoff. I work in the library so I want my pc to run quietly.
    • Screen should be nonreflective/matte. I get distracted easily with a reflective screen.
    • Screen should be bright enough.
    • Screen should be able to display beautiful colors/high res for photo editing.

ACER Predator Helios 300 for budget gaming laptop?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 08:25 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop for a budget of under £1000 and have done some research and found the Acer Predator Helios 300 to be one of the top gaming laptops around for the price. I'm not very tech-savvy however and am really not sure if I can justify spending that much money on something I'm not 100% sure about. Can someone tell me if this is a suitable laptop or if there are others I should be investing in?

    UK - £1000

Best specs - don't care about battery life too much.

    Weight and thinness not important.

    Windows preferably.

    N/A screen size.

Gaming and office type work (don't think office work will be much of a problem).

Would want to play newer games on high settings. Games such as:

    - Post-scriptum

    - Paradox titles

    - Red Orchestra/rising storm

    No specific requirements.

I hope this was the right place to post and any advice or suggestions would really help!

    [itg] dell vostro 14 5471 2 configs

    Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:39 PM PDT

I'm trying to choose between 2 configs with this one.

They are the same other than:

    1. I5 8250u and 256gb ssd
    2. I7 8550u and 128gb ssd + 1tb hdd

The price difference is about $100 for the second config.

What do you guys suggest. I've never had a dual drive system before. I assume the Os is on that ssd in the second one?

    Thanks
