I booted up my phone from my flashaholic days. Custom ROMs back then had so much personality.

I booted up my Samsung from Froyo/GB era, and I must say, I kinda miss the "spirit" and novelty the custom ROM scene brought back then.

It was arguably the golden age of custom ROMs, since AOSP gingerbread had shit functionality, UI and UX. I mean, stock AOSP didn't even have swipe to dismiss notifications, or music playback controls on the notification shade, or the option to reboot when the power button is held. I don't even recall if rotation animation existed back then, I think that it only came with Cyanogenmod. Furthermore, installing a custom ROM was pretty much mandatory for low-end devices (such as my shitty 800Mhz 290MB ram pos) to gain any semblance of speed and stability.

It was also at this time when manufacturers such as Sony, HTC, Samsung etc. provided their own skin which pretty much set them apart from each other. Each skin had their distinct design languages that carried the vision the manufacturers had for their lineup.

Sony's timescape UI was very sleek and futuristic.

HTC sense had a utilitarian feel.

Samsung's Touchwiz was infamous for being the bloated mess it was, but was subjectively the most user friendly.

MIUI's level of customization and theming which was on a whole 'nother level. (Back then, Xiaomi didn't sell phones yet), and many more.

Sure enough there was demand and developers from XDA ported ROMs from other devices. Not only did developers simply port ROMs, there were also those who cooked their own ROMs and meticulously themed every app and every part of the UI as they pleased. Looking back, those were the designs that had red glossy icons, matching boxy fonts that screamed edgy, had no thought for readability or user-friendliness, and were tacky as fuck (Look up "CM7 Theme chooser themes" on google or XDA), but it is undeniable that even those carried their own personality.

Nowadays, Custom ROMs mostly seems to be a derivative of "pixel experience" that are all boring and indistinguishable from each other. Custom ROMs back then were really "custom", and had their own quirks and personality. Also, not trying to discredit developers, but developers from the past tinkered more and were more creative and resourceful, where they wrote entire frameworks for new features and animations. Heck, there's even an iOS ripoff (see album at bottom of post), and it's not just a simple hack job of slap-a-launcher-and-theme-then-call-it-a-day, as each app was built individually and integrates with other system apps.

As a reward for the long read, here is my fully riced Samsung from back then (Pls Dont Crucify Me)

Also pls bring back CRT screen off animation.

HUAWEI is now back on the member list of SD, Wifi, Bluetooth, and JEDEC Association

    Posted: 29 May 2019 06:43 AM PDT

For a few days we saw Huawei's membership was either revoked or suspended by SD, Wifi, Bluetooth, and JEDEC Association. After a few days, the membership seems to have been restored.

What's interesting to watch is how these organizations all behave in sync. Links:

Anyone else just get a push notification ad from Google Duo?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 05:45 PM PDT

I just got a push notification ad from Google Duo that somebody sent me a message.

I opened the message. It was an Indian celebrity(?) thanking me for the birthday wishes. It was clearly an ad, I think for a sports league in India. I did not pay much attention and I was rushing to remove an app that I had honestly forgotten about.

    Anyone else?

Edit: I should add, I am fairly confident that I am in America.

Just received the update for the new UI. They've made it easier to use one handed and on larger phones, moving most of the UI down the bottom of the page and leaving the search bar at the top.

Reminder: Google Keep still not integrated with Google Assistant

    Posted: 29 May 2019 03:04 PM PDT

Google Keep integration with Google Assistant was promised at I/O 2018, but we have yet to see this rolling out widely.

Let's keep up the pressure, folks. Send Google product feedback. If you would like this, tell them! Use the "Send Feedback" feature in Google Assistant and Google Keep apps on your phone.

Of the 500 employees we have, 8 of them chose an Android phone.

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:05 PM PDT

It was so intriguing, we had to survey why (we're the IT department; it kind of stood out to us). Over half of the answers were because:

    • I don't want my texts to be green for my family.

Now... does anyone know what in the hell Google's plan is for native-ecosystem messaging apps? Allo died, Hangouts died... I tell people to use Google Duo for "Facetime" if they need it... I just don't even know what kind of advice to give anymore.

I just wish Google had an end-to-end encrypted native messaging app that switched to sms/RCS when it was sent to an iPhone (this doesn't solve the survey, but I personally yearn for an iMessage-esque app made by Google themselves).

EDIT: THANK you for the wonderful comments (despite a lot of downvotes, I was enlightened!):

    • The main issue: At the turn of the texting-costs-money era, most countries moved away from sms, and Americas telco solution was to include it in their plans as "free" instead. Thus, creating a distain of "why would I use something else when this works and costs nothing?" America still hasn't bucked the trend completely.

    Thank you!!

Until today, I would recommend it a thousand times over to anybody who asked.

But then yesterday it deleted all 300 photos from my Camera photo and all 80+ Screenshots today. Just a random bug that if you're in a folder, in the blink of an eye takes you back to the main app screen - and the folder is gone forever. Unable to recover anything through cache or anything. Just gone forever. Be very careful.

Galaxy Note10 is Samsung's last 1/2.55-inch 1.4um CMOS flagship phone. Samsung has been using it for 4 years. Starting next year, Samsung S11 will adopt a new large-size large-pixel CMOS.
