Why I think the Pixel 3a is the best Pixel yet

    Posted: 15 May 2019 05:28 PM PDT

So my wife broke her phone about 2 weeks ago and I kept looking around to find her a new phone. With the announcement of the pixel 3a I was very interested, finally a phone that I won't have to spend $1,000 on that actually fits what I believe she is looking for.

So I went to my local T-Mobile store and picked one up for her and after surprising her with it she was incredibly happy to finally have a new phone.

Immediately she took the phone out and started playing with it. immediately she praised the screen for its brightness and vibrancy and size. She installed all her apps and one of the first thing she did was take a selfie.

3 days later I asked her what she thinks. She says she loves the phone because of the camera and the battery lasts forever.

You know what she never once commented on?

Not once did she mention the phone being plastic. She immediately put a case on and never noticed.

Not once did she ask about the processor or storage speed, she said it seemed super fast and smooth and has no idea what UFS even is.

Not once did she ask about wireless charging, she's never used it when when she had a Samsung.

But you know what she did notice immediately?

    Immediately she loved the camera

    Immediately she loved the screen

Immediately she loved the battery life

    Conclusion

This phone checks all the right boxes where it matters for the average person and that's why I believe it will be the best selling pixel, and is easily the best Pixel for the masses.

Does it feel that all cameras within the last 3 years are really good and only seem "poor" when side by side with another?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 08:27 AM PDT

I'm not a huge camera man, I don't take a lot of photos, but I was watching a video talking about the One Plus 7 Pros camera, and they're saying "camera is okay, things are too blown out, over Saturated ... " And all of this stuff that I don't notice. Camera looked fine to me. I only saw the SLIGHT difference when they do a side by side comparison. I feel like if anyone bought the phone, it wouldn't be a problem or concern

Oneplus 7 Pro - Battery life compilation

    Posted: 15 May 2019 03:13 AM PDT

Battery life tends to be hard to compare due to difference in usage patterns even with the same reviewer so take these results with a grain of salt.

    tl;dr at the bottom

Reviewer Oneplus 7 pro Oneplus 6T
GSMArena 85h endurance test, 92h at 60Hz 90h endurance test
Mr. Mobile Lasts a day and a half 50% at the end of the day
    MKBHD 4-4:30h SOT 5h+ SOT
Engadget over 12h per charge(Not SOT)1 over 13h per charge (Not SOT)
Android Central 15% at the end of the day with 4h SOT and heavy usage. (camera + maps) 30-40% at the end of the day with 3h SOT and casual usage. 30% at the end of the day with 3-4h SOT and heavy usage. (bluetooth streaming + hotspot occasionally)
Slashgear Lasts at least a day and usually a day and a half. Slightly better than the 6T (Source) lasts a full day's use
The Verge Gets through a full day and often a good way through the second day. Standby time is also good. On par with Pixel 3 XL
    Dave2D 7-8h SOT N/A
Linus Tech Tips 40% at the end of the day N/A

Note: Engadget's review states "battery has usually lasted me for over 12 hours per charge with normal use."

Mrwhosetheboss did a battery drain test but it didn't include the Oneplus 6T so I didn't include it in the table. Based on his results, the Oneplus 7 Pro has worse battery life than the S10+, P30 Pro, and Mi 9. It beats the Xs Max but iPhones generally lose battery drain tests against Androids.

GSMArena has objective battery benchmarking and should be a good enough indicator. Use their battery life test results tool to compare with your own phone for your own point of reference.

tl;dr: General consensus is Oneplus 7 Pro battery life is worse than Oneplus 6T. However, based on results from GSMArena, changing to 60Hz gives it better battery life than the 6T. Standby time is said to be good.

Real-world susceptibility to a device unpatched against the PNG vulnerability

    Posted: 15 May 2019 08:30 AM PDT

If an Android device is now unsupported by its manufacturer, then it is possible that it may never receive an OS patch to fix its handling on maliciously crafted PNG images.

In the real world, how exposed would this leave an average user? To what extent would using up-to-date apps help to mitigate their exposure?

For example, when you browse the web using Mozilla's Firefox browser for Android, then you'll be using Firefox's own bundled implementation for PNG image rendering, so the presence or absence of an OS patch wouldn't affect you at all in that use case.

Is the same true (or hypothetically, could it be made true) of Google Chrome? How about apps which make use of an up-to-date Webview component to render rich content?

What does "all day battery" mean to you?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:43 AM PDT

We're all familiar with companies touting their phones as having "all day battery" ***, which I've always felt unreliable

For me, I want to be able to pummel a phone with YouTube and Reddit, and still get at least 7 hours SOT. I also feel like the all day battery promise should last for several years at least, so I feel like 4000mah is the lowest I'd consider.

Everybody's got different uses though, so what's your definition of "all day battery"?

Bonus Question: How has that definition changed over time?
