$900 to $1000 USA, looking to decide on a Macbook.

    Posted: 02 May 2019 04:03 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: If I purchased today, I have enough for a $949 device (macbook air 2018, & macbook pro 2017 for example)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd love a good battery, didn't find myself using 2-in-1 much when I had it on my windows laptop. Minimal storage as I have a huge wireless SSD.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I have a small concern, but not a huge issue.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Looking specifically at Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inches only (:

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly will be running java on IntelliJ, CSS/HTML coding softwares (not sure which one), Python coding software, and I may use Lightroom or Photoshop a few times, along with simple editing on Cinema 4D possibly

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not gaming on this laptop

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Just looking for something portable, not something to replace my iMac.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have an iMac that works wonderfully and I wouldn't trade it for the world, mostly just looking to replace my windows laptop with a mac one. I have enough to buy a 2018 air or 2019 pro, but when my financial aid refund hits I may be able to get something with a touchbar. I had this laptop (one with a touchbar) last year and ended up returning it to apple because I didn't feel like I really used the touchbar for anything other than to surprise people since it was a newer feature.

Best mid range laptop for split productivity/gaming? $1000-2000 Canadian. Looking to use it for photoshop and light gaming. Have a few picked but can't make up mind.

    Posted: 01 May 2019 06:30 PM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: Buying in Canada, hoping to spend $1000-1500 CAD although could maybe go a little higher for a good deal or if its really worth it.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Nah looking to buy new

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life? Really looking for something that's overall good, performance is always key and long battery life is always good. Also want to avoid the gamer-ish aesthetic. Something sharp and minimal if possible. Like the XPS 15

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Pretty much only 15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly photo editing with PS and maybe some video stuff with AE and premiere. Also some light gaming for sure. Besides that just school and web browsing stuff,

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I already have a decent PC with everything I need, 1070, good display and the rest. But I'd like to play some non demanding stuff well on the go. Overwatch, WoW, Indie stuff, Civ 6. Most demanding might be Hitman or Dishonored 2.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good Keyboard is a big plus. No need for touchscreen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Major points are nothing too gamer looking, not looking to rise up hehe. A SSD is a must. For sure a decent display since photo editing, IPS is possible. Not sure if 16gb of ram is needed but hey it would be cool. Alhtough I'm sure 8gb is fine. Also a solid build with more metal instead of plastic. I've looked through quite a few threads already which led me to the XPS 15 (bad thermals tho), Razer Blade 15 (1060 but bad QC), and the y530 (really bad screen). They each have their own cons and its making the choice a lot harder.

MSI ge63 8re vs Acer predator helios 300

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:25 AM PDT

    Hello to all,

I want to upgrade my laptop in the near future. I'm currently on a MSI gl62 7rdx. It used to run hot but I have reapplied the thermal paste and undervolted it and it runs much cooler and quieter then before. I don't like my pc's too noisy or hot. I also upgraded the 1tb hdd to a 1tb ssd for faster loading speeds.

I would like a laptop with a more powerful gpu. The 1060 6gb should be a good upgrade from my 1050, benchmarks indicate it is twice as powerful. Both laptops feature an M.2 ssd for the OS and a hdd for storage, that I would upgrade to an ssd in the near future. I am not interested in laptops without space for an additional 2.5" drive to accompany the M.2.

I am happy with the build quality of my current MSI laptop, after repasting, undervolting it and upgrading the storage. I am considering either of the laptops in the title. The Acer seems like great value but I am concerned it may feel cheaper. Good thermals and low noise levels are also of concern, I have read mixed reviews. Please share your opinions. Thanks in advance.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is crucial, best specs for money, it doesn't matter if it's 2 in 1 or not

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Should have a good weight so that it can be carried around. Thinness doesn't matter as long as laptop delivers good performance

      • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. I have never used mac, so will it be difficult to adjust?
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A Preferably 13"

      • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a good keyboard and touchpad. It should be well built and last long. I would like a fingerprint scanner. I don't like the "chin" webcams.I would prefer to opt out for 4k displays as they drain battery. I do not need a touch screen display but it would be nice to have one. I want a core i7 processor.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would still very much like it if I had at least a single USB-A port as most of my accessories are USB-A (but I could live without one on the laptop) It need to have a good customer support just in case. Laptop should also look nice.

If that helps, I will be either majoring in biochemistry or computer science.

Laptop at 1000 usd or lower for video, art and csgo

    Posted: 01 May 2019 11:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

My total budget at checkout is 1100 usd. Im buying in the U.S

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I prefer best specs for the money. I may use an ipad for tablet functions.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness are not very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows and compatibility for ubuntu if possible. I say this because some laptops have issues dual booting linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

No preference but larger is better

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes. Must work with Blender, Unity, Adobe suite, Reason Audio workstation, Fl studio Audio workstation, CSGO, Starcraft 2, Fortnite, Skyrim

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Older Titles such as Skyrim, Minecraft at medium to High settings with at least steady 60fps but around 120fps preferred. Csgo at least medium to low at 120fps and Fortnite medium to low at least 120fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Highly color accurate screen (>90%) for art and photography work. Good thermals are very important. A good selection of ports and possible hdmi input to the laptops monitor (Some laptops only have hdmi output). Build quality is very important. My last laptop had a broken headphone jack and a malfunctioning touchpad so I dont want to deal with that again.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The most important things to me are the color accuracy and quality of the screen and the ability to handle tasks such as video editing, Animation, 3d art and programming. Possible game creation in the future although this will mostly be 2d game design until I can afford a powerful desktop.

Realistically I am willing to make sacrifices on gaming performance and other things we can discuss since my budget is not very high. But I cannot make sacrifices for content creation so I must stress a color accurate and bright screen, thermals, build quality and content creation performance.

    Thank you so much

900 - 1100 laptop for editing photos and videos. Gaming too.

    Posted: 01 May 2019 09:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

1100 dollars is my maximun budget, i'll purchase in Chile.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.\*

I would like a 2 in 1 but it is not really important. I need a battery that lasts at least 5 hours, the more the better. I do not handle the technical specifications very well, but I suppose I need a good processor, good RAM and a good video card to run my programs and games in the best way.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?\*

Just do not be excessively heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.\*

I prefer Windows or Mac, really doesn't matter.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.\*

    13 " to 16 "

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.\*

Editing on photoshop, davinci resolve, premiere, lightroom. Games: GTA V, FIFA, League of Legends, Fortnite.
I hope to run games that come out in the future.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?\*

With medium-high settings and enough FPS to make it look smooth and without sticking.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?\*

Only a quality keyboard and inputs.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I hope the notebook gives me a good experience for at least five years. Sometimes I will have several tabs or programs open at the same time and I hope it is not a problem. Thanks for reading and for your help, in advance and forgiveness for my English.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specification and good battery life since i will be using the laptop for college.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" or 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/video editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. AutoCAD, SolidWorks and other engineering program, and maybe small gaming like cities skyline and kerbal space program.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD and reliable build quality is preferable, I don't want to change laptop every 3 years or so.

Engineering Student, looking for something reasonably priced

    Posted: 02 May 2019 02:50 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Maximum $1000, would prefer under $800, in US

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I would prefer battery life - at least 6 hours if possible, but I don't mind needing to plug in. Specs are also somewhat important to me - I need my laptop to last.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Somewhat important, but thinness shouldn't come at the cost of performance.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows and Linux

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** prefer 15 inch or 13 inch

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** will be doing some CAD and light photo editing

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** not really planning on gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I would prefer a good keyboard and a trackpad with Windows Precision Drivers, preferably with USB-C charging (though that's not really necessary, I don't mind a proprietary charger). What I do require is at least one thunderbolt 3 port though, in order to connect it to an external monitor with only one cable.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'll likely be doing a lot of modelling, so I'll need a GPU that's somewhat powerful, though I don't think I'll be needing anything over-the-top. I also would like a touchscreen and Windows Hello facial recognition, but those are features I'm completely fine with doing without.

Dell XPS 15 vs Lenovo Yoga 730

    Posted: 01 May 2019 11:11 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've been looking for a good laptop for quite a while now.

I narrowed it down to the two above the Dell XPS 15 9570 (1080p-Display), with it's wonderful color accurate screen (Ik 4K is even better but also even more expensive) and the Lenovo Yoga 730 15-inch with it's handy functionality to turn into a tablet.

In either case we are talking about an Intel-i7 (8th-Gen.) CPU,

    16 GB of RAM,

and decent GPU's in form of the NVIDIA GTX 1050 (Yoga 730) and the GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q (XPS 15).

Since I am a (Computer Science) college-student these are my requirements and my intended usage:

    - Price under 2000 EUR (both lingering around 1550 EUR - so perfect)

    - Portable (both around 1.9 kg and 15" - so top)

    - Easy to take notes on ( not mandatory)

Now to the little bit more demanding tasks:

    - Unity Programming

    - 3D-Modelling (Blender)

    - Photo- & Video-editing (Adobe Premiere & Photoshop)

    - Casual Gaming

I know that both laptops are very well capable of the asked tasks, maybe struggling the more complex the project becomes.

As of right now I am not that serious about Video/Photo-editing, but I might become, once I have more free time on hand, so a color accurate screen could be preferable.

Accordingly the 4k on the XPS 15 panel might not be that bad of an idea.

I intend to use the laptop also after college (approx. 2-3 years from now on) and maybe on the route, or when travelling.

On the other hand the tablet mode can be very useful both in college as well as for editing.

What do you think, which one would be the better investment?

Or would you recommend an other laptop for my demands ?

Or should I buy a cheaper option for college and get a more expensive one after I graduated?

    USA, 1200 USD, 15"-15.6"

    Posted: 01 May 2019 07:11 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    -1200 USD before tax

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

-Good battery life, best specifications for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too worried about this but I am not a fan of how large gaming specific laptops can be.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    -Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

    -15" to 15.6"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Solidworks which is basically CAD, MATLAB, and the only games are Black Ops 3 and Sims 4.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-Black Ops 3 and Sims 4. 60 FPS at high settings would be nice.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-I definitely want a good keyboard and reliable build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-I currently have an ASUS N550JK and I love everything about it but the internals are starting to not be good enough as it is somewhat old. So most importantly I want a metal body with a full number pad. I also like the glossy, IPS screen the N550JK has.

    Thanks for the help!

My wife agreed to game if I get her a laptop!!! In the UK, hopefully costing less than £600. Needs to play ESO and FO76 and do basic laptop stuff.

    Posted: 01 May 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Thanks for reading this far! The main details are in the title but here is some more. My wife of less than a year would like to join me in some online games (we used to play, but stopped when our desktop broke down). My wife is also being sent on a university course so having her own laptop would be helpful.

We want to play elder scrolls online and fallout 76 together; they are not very demanding games, but playing them on the lowest settings is not great.

The laptop may need to travel so SSD may be better.

We are not techies, so easy to use will be better.

Not sure if it is standard, but a webcam would be a big advantage as it will help while staying in touch.

If I can answer any questions that may help you help us then please ask. Thanks for reading.

    Machine for an old man

    Posted: 01 May 2019 02:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £500(?) UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Will always be desk based and plugged in.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows to use MS Office

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. As physically large as possible, but high res is not required (will be used in accessible mode because of poor eyesight)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Office applications, Email and web browsing, remote management (being controlled remotely)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard essential - current HP keyboard with fast access keys is frustrating as they are normal keys where shift/tab should be. BUT fast access keys are a good thing.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This machine is for a partially disabled old man with failing eyesight, he uses windows settings that essentially disable Aero, and font sizes that he can read that frequently push control-panel OK/apply/cancel dialog boxes out of the visible area (sigh, if MS cant get it right, who else could possibly!). A large screen is a must, but resolution is not going to be used to the full because to get him to see anything needs things BIG.

The situation is that he currently has a HP laptop from perhaps 6 years ago with i3 (I think?) and 3 GB RAM, since Windows 10 infected it it has slowed down to a unusable slug, the battery is poor requiring a button press to pass the BIOS and the last straw is that it now won't open a save-as dialog box.

Really I don't see why this machine should be so much worse than it was when we brought it, and I'm afraid that if I get him a low spec machine now that in a few years we will be in exactly the same place. I don't know if thats a reasonable fear.

I'm able to put parts together to build a PC, but as I'm not sure what a reasonable spec for future proofing such basic requirements I'm finding it more expensive to spec my own than 75% of the machines at PCWorld. Building a PC would seem like the way to go, there really isn't any point in getting a laptop except that everything is in the same box and working from the manufacturer.

    Help?

[$800] Aus looking for a laptop for programming and running multiple virtual machines at once. 15"

    Posted: 01 May 2019 05:37 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm after a new laptop since my current one isn't cutting it. I'll be mostly using it for programming and running virtual machines.

Some specs I'm looking for are:

    At least 8gb ram

    512gb ssd or 1tb hdd

    The faster CPU the better

I'm not too fussed about graphics, so integrated will be fine. Budget is flexible so please suggest anything you think would fit my needs.

    Thanks!

    Laptop for Short Term Development?

    Posted: 01 May 2019 04:16 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Max 500$, preferably in the 200-300 range, but will buy up to 500$ if its a really exceptionally good deal

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Best specs for the money

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not very

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Windows or Linux (I plan to wipe it and install Ubuntu on it no matter which of the two it is)

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Nothing intensive, just coding. No special programs needed besides a C compiler and possibly an assembler

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    Not gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Would prefer a good mousepad and keyboard, but not a must at all

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I need this laptop for a summer research class I'm taking at my school. I'll be using it a ton, so it shouldn't be flimsy. Above all, I want decent specs for a low price that'll last at most 6 months of coding.

Thank you to all that comment and help out, I really appreciate your help!

Looking for a new upper level gaming laptop (

    Posted: 01 May 2019 03:38 PM PDT

    Hey there

Right now Im using the Asus G751jy, which used to be a really good choice back in 2014/15. Got it Feb'15.

Now, I think something is broken and the cooling system is constantly failing. Can't even play games anymore without massive FPS drops due to heat throttling. Even using Word or just browsing heats it up.

Anyway, I was looking at the Asus Strix Scar II GL704gw. Using the 2070rtx nvidia gpu and i7 8750 cpu. Id like the one with 512 SSD.

Got some questions about it (Im far away from having a good knowledge to be able to judge it by myself)

    1. If theres only a 512 SSD, can I place some HDD by myself? I need more space for university stuff

    2. Is this even a decent choice in this price level (1.8-2.3k €) I need performance (+mobility) so that's why I was looking at gaming notebooks

    3. I read that theres a problem with the strix scar 2 only having 1x 16 RAM and it's not able to dual channel. Can I place another RAM by myself? How do I know which one fits?

    4. I just saw that the Scar 3 was announced by Asus. It's coming in Q2 2019. What do you guys expect it to be priced? I guess itll be above 3k €? But once it hits the market, maybe the Scar 2 has some price drop?

Feel free to suggest another laptop :)

    Thank you!
