I am a Cinematographer looking for a solid new laptop. My Macbook Pro Retina 2014 is nearing its lifespan for heavier workflow.

I have been looking at the Razer Blade 15 Advanced with RTX and the Surface Book 2 (Main issue is no Thunderbolt 3). Gigabyte has also been on my horizon as was MSI machines. This will be my first major foray away from Mac in several years and the field is quite dense on the PC side, any recommendations are much appreciated. Thank you!

Discrete graphics card but if possible the mx150 or similar models which consume less battery

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

After doing a research the ones that I liked the most are msi ps42 with i7 8550u 512 ssd 8 gb ram mx150 and HP pavilion (15 or 14) with i7 8550u 128ssd 1tb hdd 12 gb ram mx130. I preffer the msi because of desingn and the big ssd, but maybe the ram is more important and HP has other slots to improve, which msi lacks.

    Other laptops are welcomed!

System76 Darter Pro VS Dell XPS 13 VS Asus Zenbook UX533FD

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 04:01 AM PDT

In a year or two I'll probably swap my HP Elitebook 8470p for a new one.

So I started looking for a Laptop for coding, and most of the time I use Arch Linux. Sometimes I edit some 4k videos.

Seems System76 is a reasonable choice with great upgradeability (It has Thunderbolt 3 supporting charging, meaning I could utilize my 65W PD charger).

I love Asus Zenbook UX533FD but it doesn't support charging through type-c. Also the Zenbook model lacks upgradeability.

I love XPS 13 but it lacks upgradeabilty.

A little worried about System76, since I searched a lot and found some reviews buzzing about its build quality (coil whine, etc).

    Any better choices?

    Should I choose 12,5 or 14 inch laptop ?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 03:20 AM PDT

Hey all, so currently I'm final year student, I already have an 15,6 laptop and I made a mistake when I bought it but anyway I used it for almost 3years and I already using it less and less because I have a powerful desktop PC.. Anyway I'm thinking of selling it and buying an used 12,5 or 14 laptop. But I can't decide which should I choose either a 12,5 or 14. As I already said I mainly work on my desktop, now I need a laptop just throw it into my backpack and forget that I even carrying it. I mostly use it for my car diagnostics and to read news/ edit some word files, maybe very simple video edit, but mainly I only use it when I'm not at home. I'm thinking about lenovo thinkpad X250 or T450s , or maybe anyone could give more recommendations from other brands, cause I looked for used thinkpads in my country so it seems that x250 is really rare with full hd screen, but there is t450s with good specs for around 300€.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 300€, Lithuania.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is the most important for me.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I need it to be mobile, so should be quite light.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not sure 12,5 or 14.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, mostly reading news, car diagnostics and some very light video edit ( have a desktop for heavy tasks)

Microsoft Surface Pro 5th or 6th gen?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 01:03 AM PDT

I'm looking for a new PC (duh), and I have fallen in love with the Surface models.

    What I like about them:

    • The flexibility (can both function as a PC and a laptop)
    • The stylus; I take all my notes with pen and paper, but often lose them because I am messy. I'd like to have my handwritten notes in e.g. OneNote.

    What I don't like:

    • The pricetag
    • The fact that you will need to by the stylus, keyboard and dongle separately

At the moment you can get the 2017 Surface Pro for a heavily reduced price, and I'm really torn between buying the Pro 5 with a 7th gen. i5 core, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD (where I can get all accessories as well, for the same price of a Pro 6), or saving up even more money to get the Pro 6 with a 8th gen. i5 and similar specs.

Will the general university student (doing biochemistry with some light programming in R and Python) feel the difference between the now cheaper 7th gen i5 vs. the 8th gen i5? The professional reviewers I can Google seem split on it as well.

I have a stationary PC at home for gaming and hardcore calculations. I need a lightweight laptop for university use.

    Thx in advance.

    2000$ budget for college laptop

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:53 AM PDT

I need a laptop for college and I prefer somthing that can play games pretty well. It needs to be Sturdy and strong. I have played with 2 gaming laptops, an older alienware which was super heavy super strong, And an asus rog which was super flimsy and light. I dont want a laptop that Is going to explode if it slides off my bed. It needs to be iether 4k (I'm aware 4k is not great for gaming) or have a good IPS panel. It needs to have at least 500gb idc if its ssd or hhd.

EDIT: Just purchased this https://slickdeals.net/f/12975550-lenovo-legion-y740-i7-8750h-16gb-dual-chan-rtx-2070-max-q-gaming-laptop-1459-19?src=frontpage Has a nice camera which is actually strangely important for the first time in my life. Thank you guys though

$1000 budget in USA. Student looking for good battery life and high quality

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:27 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 in the USA. (Could possibly do a little more if it is justifiable)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and relatively good specs are priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, as a student I will be carrying it a lot, but not necessarily a deal breaker.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13 and 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Primarily microsoft office programs, browsing, streaming video and music. Downloading files

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is a must, good keyboard, backlit would be nice. SSD is also a requirement, looking for 256gb or more (i know price is limiting there)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was eyeing the dell xps 13 9370 for a while, but I just came across all the potential issues they have. I really dont want to deal with that sort of thing, although microsoft has a killer sale on one of those models rn. Alse was looking at the surface laptop 2, but the 256gb upgrade is a lot even with a student discout. The "ultrabook" is the type of laptop I am wanting, but obviously on the lower end spec wise. Thanks for your time and expertise!

[US] Portable gaming laptop for <$2000

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:33 PM PDT

    Hi guys!

I made a post here about a week or so ago, but didn't get any responses then. I've been looking to buy a new laptop that I can use on the go, since I travel a lot for my job. I'll primarily be using it for gaming, and other general entertainment.

Right now I'm primarily considering the Razer Blade 2018 and the Eluktronics Tongfang GK5CN6Z. However, even with those options I'm still not sure if these are the right fit for my needs. I'd appreciate any input on the performance and durability of these laptops, or any other laptops you folks may find to be good. Thanks! Details below.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Purchasing in US. Budget is $2000, though aiming to spend around $1500.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are my primary concern. Looking for at least 16 GB ram, 512 GB SSD, and can otherwise run the games listed below. Durability is also important because I'll be slinging this behind my back quite often.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important. Aiming for around 4 pounds, but 5 pounds is my hard limit. Thinness is preferable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" preferred, but I can go smaller (if that even exists)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I may do some light CAD work. Primarily gaming, e.g. Clone Hero, Factorio, LoL, Minecraft, Nier;Automata.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games as above, and others. 60fps at medium settings is my baseline, but any better than that is definitely a bonus.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Just looking for build quality. I have my own peripherals.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will be my primary computer for probably a few years, so I definitely care about the durability. Also, my budget is somewhat flexible, so if there are any good options over $2000, I'm still open to checking those out. Thanks for your suggestions, I really appreciate it!

Good laptop for general use + CAD software?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:52 PM PDT

    https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptops/new-inspiron-15-2019/spd/inspiron-15-5584-laptop/configurations

I wouldn't want to go much over £500, so is this laptop good for general use and a bit of small scale CAD stuff?

Anything look off about it? A different recommendation in the same price range?

Total budget and country of purchase: £600, UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. All rounder really

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD using SolidEdge.

EDIT: I've come across another laptop I like better. Thoughts? https://compadvance.co.uk/en/item/625682/HP-Pavilion-Laptop-15-cs0018nt?gclid=Cj0KCQjwyoHlBRCNARIsAFjKJ6DqDe80co8L7RZQ0ioBUjlOZAcfL_RU8HyPctafBitKDIZCGXJc8UoaAj_jEALw_wcB

1000-1500 euros, Switzerland -e.g. Samsung N.b.Pro9 and Lenovo Yoga 720

Thoughts would be very welcome as I can't figure it out myself at this point anymore.. **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2-in-1 would be great, as long as battery life is good and that it allows low-level gaming. It seems that Samsung notebook pro 9 and Lenovo Yoga 720 might fit this bill? * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Definitely a plus when its lower weight for 2-in-1 * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13 * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Light gaming. Rimworld, Age of Mythology, Knight and Merchants * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** For games see above. Medium settings and playable (not annoying) FPS are fine. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good keyboard * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** So I so far tried to narrow things down to Samsung Notebook pro 9, Lenovo Yoga 720 and HP Spectre x360 (the last one fell off today). However, there are also ultrabook options which are super light-weight and have incredible videocards... probably >2000 dollars though. Thoughts would be very welcome as I can't figure it out myself..

RIP MACBOOK. Need a new laptop for school

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:03 PM PDT

So I bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 15 inches (2015 Ver.) for $2000 and within 6 monthes, it turned into absolute shit. This is my mistake and a tip: please dont ever buy used apple products from bestbuy :(. Warranty gone and repair fees seem unjustifiable given that I already put in 500-600 for repairs and its still shitting the bed, can't afford for it to break it again to be honest. Would like to cut my losses and rather just buy an affordable laptop.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$750 CAD, CANADA, BC
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer battery life; I only used my MacBook for lighweight tasks (I think, programs such as MacTeX and DrRacket for Scheme) and it still struggled with battery. I would like to tthink that the programs I have listed below are not too demanding.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? My MacBook was quite heavy, I'd rather try something lightweight as I would be commuting quite often
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/indifferent; open to learning different OS
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. n/a
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.A I am planning to run programs such as RStudio and some sort of LaTeX Program for Math typesetting. I also would like to learn some programming (Java, Python, etc.). I don't do much gaming now so I am not looking for a gaming laptop.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? For some reason, when the laptop fans start running really loudly it kind makes me scared and anxious.... Other than that, I just reallly want a laptop that wont break down again man :'(

Absolute best overall laptop/2-in-1 under $600

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 09:43 PM PDT

I'm looking for a daily driver. General use (however I do remote in through Citrix when working from home).

I'm not concerned with gaming or designing. I'm looking for something durable with awesome battery life for under $600.

I will consider 2-in-1's also. Please suggest what you can, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:42 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700-$900; Indonesia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 and Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? My last laptop weigh more that 3kg (Asus ROG GL552JX), I don't want to break my spine this time.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux (Mint)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Under 14'

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do light video ediing, some other graphical works, a bit of coding, and perhaps Kerbal Space Program

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I like Kerbal Space Program, low settings is OK.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a GPU that can handle light graphic workload, for a 2 in 1 form factor, NVidia dGPU is not available here in that price range. Which is why I choose Ryzen, any suggestions accepted.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My choices are Lenovo Yoga 530 and HP Envy x360 13. The Yoga has 2 options: - Ryzen 5, Vega 8, and 256GB SSD - Ryzen 7, Vega 10, and 512GB SSD (I would like to choose Ryzen 7, but there are many arguments that Vega 10 underperform Vega 8 because of throthilng, but I need more storage (don't want to buy a separate SSD)) The HP is Ryzen 5, Vega 8, and 512GB SSD, but the thermal is worse as it has a single fan and a smaller form factor (Yoga 530 has dual fans)

Yoga 530 is marketed as Flex 6 14' in the US as far as I know.

Edit : I added more details.
