Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:38 PM PDT Hi everyone -- I'm posting here because I'm not sure where else to ask. I'm not an expert with computer networking, so I need some help. My home network has had strange fluctuations in DL/UL speeds. After speaking with my ISP, they determined that I using large amounts of bandwidth from 12AM-3AM. Since I knew I wasn't using any traffic then, I used my bandwidth monitor on my router (Ubiquiti EdgeRouter) to see which device was generating the traffic. I found out that my QNAP (Home NAS device) had tx of 50 gigabytes every night sometime after 12AM. I can't figure out where this traffic is coming from, and what it is. I downloaded wireshark and captured all packets last night from my NAS, and the traffic seems to be all internal and small volume (just SSDP packets) -- i.e. sent to IP addresses 192.168.1.x but I'm not sure if I am using this right. Also this wouldn't make any sense as my ISP would not see internal bandwidth usage. So I really need some help from experts in trying to find out if this is malicious activity or something else going on. How do I measure and figure out where the traffic is coming from? I think the problem with wireshark is that you can't differentiate small sized packets and requests from large ones, and I'm not sure how to identify where 50gigabytes of traffic is coming from. Is there some tool or method out there to measure exactly where the traffic is coming from and shows the bytes of traffic being sent? Please help me figure this out! Thank you :) [link] [comments] |
Baffled trying to plan network for small business...help? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:22 PM PDT I realize my title isn't exactly informative, but I'm a web designer who's been tasked with "fixing" our local network, and needless to say I'm in a bit over my head. The current network architecture I've inherited is...troubling, to say the least. I'm struggling to wrap my head around just what steps I should take, in what order, to move us forward. I've been scouring the net trying to educate myself, but I'm drowning and desperately hoping for a lifeline. The current setup is...well. It's as follows: Server #1: Local Fileshare 2010 Dell PowerEdge Windows 7 OS
Server #2: Web + Email Servers 2010 Dell PowerEdge Windows XP SP3 OS (!)
Router Config (Comcast Business)
Other devices in LAN:
I have been told to "migrate everything" to a new 'server' PC, a 2016 Dell PowerEdge T30. That means local file server, web server, and email server, all on the same box. My plan was to introduce Hyper-V virtual machines to segregate some of the server processes, hopefully thereby increasing security and allotting resources more efficiency, but I get lost beyond that point. Here's what I've been thinking: New "Server(s)" Plan 2016 Dell PowerEdge Windowns 10 Pro
Router Config
TL;DR - if you made it this far, bless you, kind soul
The owner set this all up in 2009, and not much has changed since then. He is also unfortunately averse to cloud-based solutions...I have tried convincing him his data would be far more secure on a cloud server than it is now, but he balks at the mention of fees and subscription services. This is a man who paid $34 for a bootleg Windows 10 Pro key for me to use in setting this all up. ANY advice is appreciated!! [link] [comments] |
Moving to a house, not sure how to best setup my internet network. Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:37 AM PDT Our family has been living in a condo unit for the longest time. Before that, we used to live in a townhouse. Internet back then was nothing frustrating but given what we had to work with (Rogers ISP in Canada...) it was bearable. Our modem was in the basement, and every device connected using WiFi. I don't honestly know how we managed to get that work.. But at our current condo, we have the modem in my room, but the master bedroom cannot connect to the WiFi. I'm not sure if it's because of the thick walls or what, but it's sad. So I bought a WiFi extender that you plug into the AC outlet, and while it does work, it's absolutely horrendous and you might as well just use data. So outside of my room, I just disconnect the WiFi because it's just that bad. And yes we have the latest modem for the gigabit internet package, which is the highest that Rogers offers. Now that we are moving back to an actual house with three floors again, I'm not sure what to do. Of all my family members, I will be needing the most stable and fast connection to internet because of the nature of my work, and I am going to be setting up the basement as my office space again. So the modem will ideally be in the basement again, but how can I set it up so the first and second floor can get the best lossless connection? The house we are moving into is going to be fully renovated. Can I request them to install better cable or wiring or something while they are doing the reno? (They aren't tearing down walls though so maybe won't be possible?) These "WiFi" extenders that we bought are not so effective, so I am not sure what other options we have. IDEALLY it would be nice to have ethernet connection to second floor where my brother will be using his desktop for his studies and whatnot too, but is extending a copper cable from basement to second floor really an option? As in, wouldn't the long distance of the copper cable cause some latency or loss issues? I am networking clown and know nothing. If you guys could kindly point me to the right direction and guide me through this, I would appreciate it so much. I'm not even sure what cables to buy, whether CAT7 is the best since it's the latest, whether I should extend the copper cable to upstairs from basement and use a router, or whether I should just extend an ethernet cable from basement to upstairs, or whether I should buy this doodat or that doodat. Please help! Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:50 PM PDT Hi all, I am moving into an apartment where the landlord supplies me with internet and uses his own router (Google Wifi). I have a Unifi USG that I want to setup so I can have my own LAN for my ESXi server, Plex, AppleTV, VPN, etc. I am fairly certain I can't set up a DMZ as his router doesn't support it. Does anyone know how I can get past a double NAT. Can I set up something on AWS and port forward to my LAN (maybe via OpenVPN)? Any suggestion? Alternative is to pay for my own internet, but I don't know if he will let me install my own connection. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:52 PM PDT I moved in to a new house and it's finished so I don't want to run Cat#. There are also no phone lines (it's new construction and people don't use land lines much anymore?). So after some research I decided moca would be the way to go. After setting it up, I cannot get the receiving unit to come on. I've got the actiontec 2.0 bonded models. I've tried multiple rooms with no luck. So I did their recommended testing of connecting moca 1 and 2 with coax, plugging one Ethernet into the router and the other end into a device. Low and behold, that works. So it's not the units. At this point I'd have to guess it's a splitter or some other issue in a wall? Is there any way to test this or troubleshoot it further? Also, for what it's worth I cannot find the damn junction box (not sure that is the correct term) for where all my coax terminates. I can see from outside it comes in near my fuse box but I have no clue where it's at in the house. I've looked everywhere. Pretty frustrated at this point. I'm beginning to think they just daisy chained all the coax together... [link] [comments] |
Attempting to establish an access point through captive portal Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:37 PM PDT First off, hello to those reading this. I sincerely hope that this post is within the guidelines and maybe someone can help me with my current situation. Basically, I get wifi provided for me at my apartment, but it passes through a captive portal before connection is established. If at all possible, I'd like to connect my router and create my own access point. Reason being that I have a few devices I'm not comfortable placing on the open wifi and I'd like a little more security. I've spent the last few days googling how to do so, and also using the search function in this subreddit, but nothing really stands out beyond "you'll need a NAT" (which I'm not familiar with how to do). My steps so far: Ethernet my laptop to the provided gateway and find the IP address. Connect my old router to the laptop, set it to AP mode, set a fixed IP to be a couple digits off the provided IP4 address of the provided gateway. Connect lan of provided to wan of old. As a mention, my router is the netgear nighthawk ac1900 (R7000) I seem to be able to connect to the old SSID, but it still kicks me to the splash page of the provided gateway. Is that the intended result? Is there any method to bypass the splash page or will I need to spoof a mac address (unsure how to do that, I just read that here). Thanks for any help you guys might be able to provide. [link] [comments] |
Substitutes for a Zone Director Posted: 30 Apr 2019 06:29 PM PDT I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this problem, but I'm going to try anyway. So my problem is that we have a network setup with a zone director and we want to replace the zone director system we have (it's a bit outdated). Is there any other substitutes for this type of system that may be a cheaper alternative. Currently, we have 3 seperate networks that we use. One for the employees one for IoT and one for the residents. The residents network has a guest pass system which is a great solution for if they click on something they shouldn't that virus or malware doesn't get back to our network. [link] [comments] |
How to improve home network speeds. Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:07 PM PDT I should be getting a 500Mbps connection but get nowwhere near that. After my acces points which are capable of 500Mbps dont even get 1Mbps. If I directly connect to the router I get about 20Mbps at the most. What can I do? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:01 PM PDT Hey, all I'm switching from CenturyLink to Comcast because my apartment/townhome DSL line is garbage and I can't get anyone to do anything about it. Our unit is duplex style with all the wiring running into my neighbors and then to ours. He currently has Comcast and gets good service, close to or at the level he's paying for, miraculously. Anywho, I'm looking for some assistance in choosing a Modem+Router. I'm looking at the 400mbps level, so I'd like to grab one that can do that, unless I'm being naive here. I've never had internet even make it past 50 Mbps so I dunno if I should lower my standards. Ideally ix like to spend less than $200 but I do want to pick something up that will be reliable and let me play with creating a 5ghz and 2.4ghz network. My PS4 and gaming PC are in the same room as my AP but I have a 16 MO old boy who is learning to climb and is ridiculously strong so I'm hoping to avoid an Ethernet cable.... The wife didn't like my idea of just running it along the ceiling.... Thanks I'm advance for your time and energy here, please let me know if there's more info on. [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on upgrading my router Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT Hi all, my current setup is a Netgear WNDR3700v4 router provided by my ISP several years ago combined with a Unifi UAP AC Pro (purchased last year after reading advice seen while browsing this subreddit) and a Raspberry Pi running the Unifi software. The wifi is disabled on my Netgear with the UAP running as the only AP, this has been working generally well up until now - The UAP was pretty much a silver bullet for all my network troubles until now. Recently I've had several intermittent issues with network speeds dropping down to < 1Mbps while running wired straight into the Netgear (I have a 400Mbps fibre connection so this is disappointing), attempts at troubleshooting have been a failure, rebooting the router sometimes fixes the issue for a short while although never reaches expected speeds even on a speed test. The Netgear web ui runs like an absolute dog and doesn't really give any useful info so I'm thinking it can't handle the speeds or is on it's last legs anyway. I've done some research but feel I've hit a bit of a dead end and have analysis paralysis; I've looked at routers such as the Ubiquiti USG, Edgerouter X, TP Link Archer 7 (possibly with DD-WRT). I've read about Pf-sense but would prefer a pre-built bit of kit with a smaller form factor rather than a re-purposed computer. The USG looks good and would plug into my existing Unifi software but I've read mixed reviews so I'm unsure, does anyone have any experience with this kit? Something with the ability to create separate VLANs and VPN functionality would be great as it's something I'd potentially like to play with in the future, I don't care about wifi since I have the UAP but traffic / bandwidth monitoring per device is something I really want to be able to see what's going on in my network. I'm happy to spend a bit of time tinkering and have a fairly technical background so not scared of a command line, but a web UI would be nice. Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks. TL;DR: Have a UAP AC Pro and need a new router: - Support for 400Mbps fibre connection - Don't need wifi built in - Want traffic monitoring [link] [comments] |
ISP DHCP not functioning properly Asus AC68U Posted: 30 Apr 2019 11:45 AM PDT Hello, I am having an issue where I am able to access the internet through my router, but I am not able to create a functional wireless network. My current setup: ARRIS SB6183 -> distribution panel -> Router (upstairs) -> Router output to PC and also back to switch for whole-home distribution. I am unable to connect to the router via my ethernet connection (i.e internet browser for router.asus.com I get an error indicating that there is no cable connected, but that makes no sense since I am typing this on the pc that is accessing the internet via that connection). When I connect to the router via a mobile phone using "router.asus.com" and access my SSID network I see an error "Your ISP's DHCP does not function properly". Testing the hardwired connections also illustrates an issue. Only my pc is getting an IP address. Other hardwired devices such as a TV (accessed through the switch) is reporting that it is unable to obtain an IP address from the router. I have been on the horn with asus technical support and ARRIS, ARRIS indicates its an ASUS issue. I have done several factory resets of the router, adjusted WAN settings from aggressive to normal (and vice-versa), all to no avail. I need help because it really sucks to not have a wireless network in the home. Please help. Thanks Update: This has been resolved. Thank you all very much for your help. The new modem did not like interfacing with the distribution panel before going to the router. Moving to modem -> router -> switch -> distribution panel solved the issue. [link] [comments] |

X520-DA1 not detected properly in Windows 10? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 05:35 PM PDT I picked up an X520-DA1 to replace my Mellanox ConnectX-3 because I was hoping to get Hackintosh support going (that's another thread entirely). However, it doesn't seem to be detected properly under Windows 10. It shows up as a generic "Ethernet Controller" in device manager and installing the drivers from Intel does nothing. I verified the Yottamark and the card is in fact genuine. Any ideas? I previously used an X520-DA2 in this machine with no issues. EDIT: Well this is interesting - under Ubuntu, if I run lspci it shows up as the following:
Perhaps I need to flash a firmware to it? EDIT 2: This is the output of the bootutil program: [link] [comments] |

Question: In what order of steps should I perform the following in order to get the above intended setup?
Is that the right order? Or should I make sure its not connected to the ISP connection before flashing the new software? Set up the R2 router first and then worry about the R1 relocation? Any help would be awesome! Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Improving my 4G+ Internet Signal Posted: 30 Apr 2019 10:47 AM PDT I am currently suffering from low internet speeds in my house, I use a Netgear Nighthawk M1 modem with a 4G simcard for home internet, this is the only option available in my area. I stated searching on ways or tools to help me improve my internet speed, and now I am planning on purchasing the below, the thing is I am not a technical networking guy and will need help in choosing the best equipment, so far I have those added to my cart: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KY4Q7DG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008B49AT4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A1GIEHP1J1DFDI&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HG7HBDY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A1THAZDOWP300U&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VL5T62G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2TIPJ9H9BSQKY&psc=1 It would be great to know if I should go ahead and get those, my modem has two antennas ports. Your efforts and advice are much appreciated and I thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
10Gb/s router? + network advices Posted: 30 Apr 2019 12:54 PM PDT I have a 1gigabits FTTH internet connection, my current router is a Synology 1900ac, I'm using some Netgear Orbi as AP. I also have a Synology DS918+ (with link aggregation capability) which I use for Plex and etc. I have a 40meters CAT 7 cable for my work computer, but I'll to add a switch. the issue : - If I get a gigabits switch I won't be able to get every device connected on the switch to 1Gb/s as they all sharing the same 1-gigabit ethernet from the switch to the router, right? - If I get a 10Gigabits switch that's would solve some issue but this won't work unless I have a 10Gb/s router too right? (otherwise the router would set ethernet link to it's max 1-gbits speed, correct? unrelated question, if I want to use the link aggregation of my DS918+ I need a switch/router which also support link aggregation ? Also I need the router to be able to setup Vlan tagging which is a requirement from my ISP, I'm also looking for a router with DPI and some advanced security features [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:38 PM PDT I'm currently using a router/modem rented from my ISP. I'm looking for a router to replace it but I would like something future-proof. I have had cable internet for years now and my town is getting fiber service in the next year or 2. I would like something with manageable firmware like a Cisco device or at least a router that could easily run a custom firmware that is like Cisco IOS. Not sure what's out there as far as quality and reliability both router and firmware-wise and looking for advice on both. As far as the modem goes I was really just planning on getting a low end one compatible with cable until the fiber service becomes active in my neighborhood. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Apr 2019 04:34 PM PDT I currently have a Linksys EA7300, in my home, that I purchased about 1 1/2 years ago in order to replace a older Netgear router (big mistake). The EA7300 has been giving me trouble, don;t want to get into it right now, so I'm thinking about getting a new router to replace it. I have installed a Netgear Nighthawk 1900 about 2 years ago in a small office and it is still working great for them so I figured I would install it here. My house is only about 2,000 SqFt so I don't need it to reach for I just need it to be reliable. I know it's a little old so I figured I would talk to everyone on here to see what there opinions would be. I want to stay below $250, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Edgerouter X not working after unplugging Posted: 30 Apr 2019 07:27 AM PDT What I did not know before googling is apparently its bad to unplug the edgerouter X. I have done so and now it's all but useless. I just moved to a new home and set up my network on an old computer just to get everything running before I moved my stuff over. Today I unplugged the edgerouter X and now it doesn't work at all. I've tried resetting to factory but I can't connect to the gui. Browser says my connection was interrupted. I've set a static up of 192.168.1.10 with the 255.255.255.0 subnet but still can't get to the login screen and I don't know what to do next. When I ping 192.168.1.1 I either get "request timed out" or "destination host unreachable". Anyone got any tips? [link] [comments] |
Sluggish internet, any ideas to improve? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:08 PM PDT I built the network with the help from this sub for a Ubiquiti network with Edgerouter X + Unifi AC Lite. It was working pretty well when I set things up but recently I noticed its quite sluggish in the working room (before it was working without any issues). By sluggish I mean takes a while to page load (do the ping and start loading) and even videos are buffering. But none of these issues are there when I'm close to the router. I tried the reboots but didn't help. Do I need to do a reset as well? Kind of avoiding it to not go through setting them up again. This is through Wi-Fi [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice setting up my network Posted: 30 Apr 2019 02:03 PM PDT Hi, I just signed up for CenturyLink fiber 1 gig and they are installing it in couple of days and wanted to get some recommendations on networking it. I currently have Comcast and eero, but recently did some remodeling and wired Ethernet to both levels of the house from the point of my modem. Wanted to get some opinions before deciding what to do. My current setup is as follows. Modem <-> eero <-> 4 port switch (TP-Link TL-WDR4300) <-> 8 port switch (TP-Link TL-SG1008D) The modem, eero router, and the 4 port switch are all in the same room. The WDR4300 has Ethernet running to upstairs to just one output and running to another room for the 8 port switch. It also has one port running to my media PC. The 8 port switch is running to multiple PCs, multiple PS4, multiple Xbox Ones and to a old Laser Jet printer. Then upstairs I just have a eero hub plugged into an outlet creating that mesh network. When I get CenturyLink installed I aquire the router from them for free and this is where my questions start. I want to make the most of the gig of internet throughout my house, knowing this eero doesn't talk nicely to pppoe and I would have to bridge it with the provided router to get it to work, as I don't want double NAT due to gaming. I will lose most of it's network management features doing so. I now have an Ethernet option upstairs so I want to look into doing an AP, but I don't know what the best way to go about this. Is my current WDR4300 would suffice for that. Any suggestions? Should I ditch the CenturyLink provided router even though it is free? Again I want to make the most of the gig around the house and I have a feeling eero won't be the best option. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is one AP enough for this house? Posted: 30 Apr 2019 03:14 AM PDT Hi all -- This is a house I'm looking at. It's 2,202 sq ft. (205 m²), single story. Here's the floor plan. And here's the full listing for the home, with lots of pictures. (It's new construction, but already completed.) Assuming APs like the TP-Link EAP225 V3 or Ubiquiti Lite, how many do you think I'd need for full coverage, and where do you recommend I put them? And does anyone recommend just using a good wireless router instead of a wired router + APs? Any router, wireless or otherwise, would likely go in the room labeled "Game Room / Bedroom 4 / Study", which would be my home office. ISP will be Spectrum at 400 Mbps. Network use: Lots of streaming, Netflix, etc. along with general work use. No kids. No game consoles (yet – I'm curious about gaming though so I might get one). I'll put most or all streaming devices on wired Ethernet either with LAN cabling or MoCA. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Netgear CM600 hasn't been giving me 150/10 MB speeds. Posted: 30 Apr 2019 01:16 PM PDT I've been dealing with these networking problems ever since I got the modem. Whenever I connect my computer directly to the modem, everything works as expected. It's only until I connect it with my router ALL the speeds start throttling, including the wired connection. Now by the sounds of that it looks like a router problem right? Well my previous modem, which had the same 150/10 speeds worked flawlessly with the same router. The old modem even had LOWER downstream and upstream lanes. I realized it must have been a modem issue and got it replaced. However the replacement has the exact SAME issue. So I'm not sure if it has to do with any kind of software configuration because that's the only option. I've done all the troubleshooting steps I can, called Xfinity told me to call Netgear, called Netgear told me to get it replaced, got it replaced but still doesn't work as intended, and finally replaced all the networking cables to see if that was an issue. So I don't know what to do. [link] [comments] |
