At my wit's end with internet lag, driving me crazy and draining my wallet

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:12 PM PDT

I'm on Windows 10 Professional, on a modest custom built gaming desktop that I've been using for a long time now, but the problem is not limited to my computer. It's also on my Xbox and my Roku devices.

I am connected to the internet, but I am experiencing lag and sudden but brief disconnects on all devices. My ISP has been out to my location and says everything is fine on my end, everything is coming through just fine and I am plugged directly into the node. I just went out tonight and bought a brand spanking new modem/router, the best one I could get my hands on (Netgear AC1750/C6300), and my ping in-game has improved by a small percentage but I am still experiencing lag and some disconnects! I even bought all new cables for it; both the coaxial cable and the ethernet are the best that money can buy. It's precisely what all the publications recommend.

This is a new problem. My internet has been fine for years, 100Mbs coming down the pipeline just fine, right up until a couple weeks ago. I really didn't want to spend the money I did on this fancy modem, but I did with the reassurance that I was putting the ultimate fix towards any internet problems I might be having. Again, it's not a speed problem, it's my latency. My latency in online games skyrockets through the roof at random but brief intervals, and I am totally disconnecting from online games at random times.

My last post got no visibility, and I am frustrated to tears about this honestly. It's threatening the loose bond I maintain with my online friends because I can't stay connected in games. Any and all advice is appreciated, I've done everything I know how to do so far but I am a novice at these things anyway.

EDIT: For clarity, I am plugged directly into my modem. It is a modem/router combo machine. Everything important that I use is within a few feet of the modem and always has been.

When starting my monitor with my PC it says ”HDMI no signal” and then turns off. Help?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:00 AM PDT

The caption states my question pretty decently I guess, I'm just gonna list what solutions I have tried:

Taking out the Lithium Coin and put it back after a while Cleaned & switched spots of the RAM stick Tried a DVA cable Made sure all components sat firmly

I also tried using the HDMI cable from my PC to my TV, so I know it has nothing to do with the monitor. It's a custom built PC, if you need the parts name just tell me. Would really appreciate some help, feels bad spending such an amount of money and then not be able to use it lol.

Laptop connects to wifi w/internet, but doesnt work. Other computers fine.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:52 AM PDT

My wife just got a HP laptop running Windows 10. It has been working on home wifi network for the last week. Last night I installed a display adapter driver for a USB to HDMI adapter. Shortly after my wife computer failed to load webpages. Wifi still said connected, internet.

I ran troubleshooting on it, and it gave a DNS error.

My computer, and our phones stayed connected and worked just fine this whole time. Also, connecting her computer to my phone's wifi hotspot worked just fine.

    What I have done.

Reset modem and router. Flushed DNS cache Assigned DNS to 8.8.8.8 and alt to 8.8.4.4 Update drivers. Deleted display adapter driver. Restart the computer a bunch.

I am not sure where to go from here.

Will I have to change my boot drive in my BIOS if I'm swapping my laptop's HDD with a cloned SSD?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 09:53 PM PDT

EDIT: Since it was the only drive in my device it booted up fine. Thanks to the two of you who replied.

Currently upgrading to a 1TB SSD using a SATA cable and Macrium Reflect as recommended by GameN's Youtube. They built it for a tower PC setup containing multiple drives, but since my laptop only has one HDD, will I need to change anything in the BIOS or can I just swap the drives once it's done being cloned?

Used Asus GTX 770 4GB for $51.50. Is it legit?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 07:25 PM PDT

I recently participated in an ebay auction for used asus gtx 770 4gb. It started out at $40. I won the auction at $51.50. No shipping cost. I already paid and am waiting for the card to arrive. I have couple of questions: 1. Is this price too high/low/just right? More importantly, is this legit? 2. How do I check if it's an actual gtx 770? Is there a software that I can run?

    Thanks!

Tried taking out battery and holding down power button for a minute and then plugging in charger. The power light and charger light comes on but it won't turn on. Also tried with just battery and battery and charger cable plugged in. Any ideas on what went wrong/how to fix?

I *think* I broke both bios on my Aorus Z390 Master

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:02 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Let's start with some specs of my system:

    - Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master

    - Intel 9900k

    - 2x 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000

    - Corsair RM850X

    - MSI GTX970 4G Gaming

Yesterday I received 3 blue screens in a few hours time. Before this everything was working perfectly fine (zero issues since I first started using this system 2 months ago). First blue screen was a "Clock Watchdog Timeout", the second and third were "WHEA Uncorrectable Error". Crashes happened during very light load (web browsing + youtube playback).

After the first blue screen I updated Windows, after the third one I did a bios update (I was on F4 before this point). I followed the instructions from the Gigabyte website and updated the bios using QFlash to F8. It seemed to have worked fine, but when I checked Speccy (just to make sure my temps were not to blame) I saw I was still on F4. My guess is there was an issue and the bios reverted itself using the backup bios.

I tried to update the bios again and after the restart the entire system did not boot. What happens is: the CPU and GPU fans spin, RGB LED's turn on, but there's no power going to USB devices or any display output (tried on a GTX970 and onboard graphics). Error code shown is 9A, which means "USB initialized".

    Here's some stuff I tried:

    - Manually switch the bios to the backup bios

    - Switch the bios to single bios mode (using backup bios as well as normal bios)

    - Removing the GPU

    - Removing every connector except for PSU (24-pin and 8 pin)

    - Booting with a single RAM stick

    - Booting on the motherboard box instead of in the case (to exclude any shorts from being a problem)

    - CMOS reset

Error code stays the same during all the above steps (9A).

Anything else I should try before sending the motherboard back to Gigabyte? I don't have any other 1151 CPU to try.

    Thanks in advance y'all!

Windows 7 external hard drive Will not boot properly

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:32 AM PDT

A bit of a long story, I've been working on getting my husband's computer up and running for the past 48 hrs

I believe his laptop (Dell Precision M4600 in case it matters) has a failed hard drive. I can't do anything to fix the drive but what I was able to do was borrow a 1tb external hard drive and I've managed to get it to be a boot drive. I have a 4gb partition for the OS and I have that partition set as active and both partitions (I have the rest of the tb as another one) are NTFS format. I was able to get his laptop to say it would boot from the USB drive but now after finally getting it to do more than just black screen (I'd initially formatted the drive wrong) it will say its loading windows and once the load bar is gone it stalls on a black screen with just the cursor visible. I feel like I'm so close to getting this to work, its just one last hurdle. I copied the OS using an ISO extracted through winrar and copied to the partition by hand after the xcopy command would not copy the folders within the ISO folder.
Additionally while I'm trying to boot from the external drive the internal drive tries to spin up and is making awful noises. Is there any way, short of removing the drive entirely, to get the laptop to stop trying to make the busted drive start? I don't want to remove the drive yet as I want to see if any data can be retrieved.

If I can only afford 4gb ram for my laptop, and it has 3gb ram already, will that work? Will the two recognize each other as 7gb ram?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:32 AM PDT

Sorry, poor. DDR3 laptop is what I'm working with. thanks to /u/ZealousFlamingo for being a pal and helping me. Can I just get something to compliment my distaster of a laptop? I want have to spend 25ish on some RAM, so if I have an empty slot, with the new RAM (4gb) coincide with the old?

How to properly manage Windows laptop with SSD?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:29 AM PDT

    Hello -

I recently got a new MSI laptop running Windows 10, which has an SSD and a Hard Disk Drive. I've never had a computer with two separate drives before and I'm a bit confused as to how I should be running it. For reference, the SSD is the C:/ and the HDD is the D:/

Out of the box, I just ran it with the default settings, so any new programs were installed to the C:/ by default.

This was fine until I quickly started getting notifications saying my SSD was running out of space?

Doing a little bit of research I found some info to suggest that the SSD should be used for the OS and all programs and other files should be on the HDD.

OK, that's fine, but I found that very often when installing a program, I was not given the option where to install it - C:/ or D:/ and everything just got installed to the C:/ - so I found a YouTube video that suggested changing the registry so that new programs are installed to the D:/ by default.

Great, so i did this - but now Windows updates won't install and just fail every time.

Surely it shouldn't be this complex? How should I set this up optimally?

    Cheers.

EVGA GTX 1080 SC is running hotter than it should be.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2019 08:53 PM PDT

I bought an EVGA b-stock 1080 SC a few months ago and it reaches 84-86C during normal gameplay even though the fans are running at 92-96%. It's also stays at base clocks the vast majority of the time due to the heat issue.

I decided to open it up to see if replacing the thermal paste would help but after removing the existing paste I noticed the heasink is really rough and scratched where it makes contact with the gpu.

Is the possibly the source of the issue? I'm wondering if I should just apply the paste and put it back together or if I should go get sandpaper and try to smooth it out before I do anything else.

Here's a pic of the heatsink.

    https://i.imgur.com/R4Crw2w.jpg

EDIT: I think sanding it would void the warranty so I'm just going to reapply the paste and put it back together and if it doesn't work I'll send it back.

EDIT2: If anyone cares repasting fixed the problem. It's running way cooler at lower fan speeds now.

Steam wont launch any downloaded games

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:14 AM PDT

Recently set up a computer for my friend, but we can't seem to get Steam to launch any games from their library.

Here's a quick list of what we have tried so far: -Verified integrity of game files -Reinstalled games -Reinstalled steam -Reinstalled into a different directory on C:/ -Reinstalled into a folder on the desktop

Since the computer is fairly new, I might just reinstall Windows tonight to see if that fixes it, but is there anything else I should try first?

Mirroring monitor with different refresh rates (and actually receiving them) impossible?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:07 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I recently upgraded my PC monitor (120hz/4K) and graphics card (Nvidia RTX 2080Ti) and one of the things I wanted to achieve was always mirror my PC screen to my TV (60hz/4K) to seamlessly switch between playing at my desk and couch.

The issue I've run into now is that I don't receive the actual 120fps at PC monitor when playing in borderless windowed mode (which I always use with games due to a second PC monitor). My PC monitor OSD refreh rate counter says 120hz, Windows says the monitor is running at 120hz, Nvidia control panel says its at 120hz, my ingame settings (tested it with Dota 2) say its at 120hz and my ingame fps counter says I get 120fps. When I disable the mirror (by either disabling the TV monitor or setting it to extended) the game feels extremely smooth, but as soon as I set it to mirror it feels way choppier.

Some stuff I tested: When I use exlusive full screen in game with the mirrored TV monitor active I see the full 120fps. When I limit my fps to 60 while mirroring to my TV monitor in borderless windowed mode the game feels even more choppier (which makes me think that I see more than 60, but less than 120 fps in that setup without fps cap), this might just be my imagination though. I tried some stuff with the Custom Resolution Utility I found on the internet, but none of it worked. People seem to use it to get the option to choose 120/144hz to begin with, but my issue isn't selecting the refresh rate - it is actually seeing it.

So, is there any possbility to get that setup to work the way I want it to or is it impossible with the current Windows/Nvidia drivers? Thanks for any help!

List of topics in programming in order to create apps

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:47 AM PDT

What are basic and experianced level topics in programming to be familiar with in order to be able creating apps smoothly and independently as well as complete (be prepared for any basic needs, except specialistic requirements)?

    LIST:

I think that good programmer that want to be able to make a great application independently or supervision the work of other programmers at bigger projects would be need to know in details or not, but the topics like:

    - programming language

    - UI framework (in general, because there is plenty of ways and technologies to create GUIs)

    - IDE

    - 3rd party available libraries

    - design patterns, antipatterns

    - unit testing

    - some security concepts, cryptography

    - something about networks (protocols, ip, layers, something more?)

    - databases

    - regex

    - working methodologies like agile (I do not like this actually)

    - ... what more?

I ask you what other concepts / issues / tools etc I should know about or learn. And for what spent most focus at?

    WHY I ASK:

I am around commercially 2.5 years experianced developer in .NET, I am mainly focused on backend, but I do know XAML and WPF so I can make (maybe not so pretty) but full apps alone. In the close future I would like also to be able to produce smartphone (probably via Xamarin) and web applications (probably via ASP.NET CORE 2, eventually ASP.NET CORE 2 MVC). I think to go for Microsoft developer certification, one by one.

I have a lot of ideas that I want to produce as an applications, but I have a problem. Some time ago I started some interesting projects, some I have finished and at some I have got stucked at one moment. It gave me experiance that I needed to start working commercially, but as I remember I did lots of things wrong and it had to be rewrited to go further sometimes, and in general I had weak basics, so to produce an app it took me a lot of time. Part of this was so specialistic knowledge which I would never be full with, but part of this was because of lack of basic knowledge.

So I decided to stop doing projects of my ideas for some time and learn basics well, so after time I would be able to produce applications faster and with better architecture in mind, so it would not stop me after some time and I would be able to make realisation of my ideas fast and smooth as I can (accepting specialistic problems). Then I spent too much time on learning too many things I guess. Now I would like to set some borders for the next year of learning and then come back to producing my ideas as the applications and rewrite my old apps.

Monitor gives no signal despite computer being on

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:46 AM PDT

I'm at a loss, I'm on Windows 10 pro. Basically i was playing Driver: you are the wheelman which is a really old game from 1999 i believe, when you go to the main menu the the resolution changes into a Much smaller one except that this time the screen just went black. I used my remote desktop app on my phone to reboot the system which i thought would fix the issue but nothing happened, now every time i boot up my pc the monitor doesn't detect any source and goes to sleep mode. I normally use VGA so i tried to switch to HDMI but nothing changed.

    I'm at a complete loss.
