The state of mobile gaming (from an indie developer's perspective) and why this subreddit is so vitally important

The state of mobile gaming (from an indie developer's perspective) and why this subreddit is so vitally important

I want to paint you a picture that will hopefully clarify how we got to the current madness that is mobile gaming and why the market places are filled with junk. I started building mobile games 6 years ago as a hobbyist developer, and the market environment has gotten so much more brutal today than ever.

    Back to the Early Days

A few early developers in the mobile market made huge profits early (which is true of any business I suppose), but given that start up costs on the mobile markets are so low ($25 for Google Play). At the time it was super easy to get discovered. To demonstrate this, I'll share a game I built back on 2012 that would be awful by today's standards, but it was still in the early days of Android (2.0 had just come out when I released). This was 100% organic traffic, no social media presence, no advertising budget, and look how it quickly trailed off in 2014.

    https://i.redd.it/k1la3le1k3q21.png

    A Problem Was Born

The market was so accessible, a random guy like me could produce a product and have it downloaded by thousands. If I had put real work into it, I'm confident back then I could have crossed the 100k threshold pretty easily, as long as you could get large amounts of downloads, you could make a few thousand off the ads. (At 12k downloads, my game brought in around $50 in revenue, but it also wasn't great so people were uninstalling pretty quick). My game was far from successful, but given the quality, I'd be lucky if it would get 50 downloads in today's market let alone 12,000+ lifetime downloads. It was the first game I ever made and a great learning experience. But thousands of guys just like me jumped on the band wagon, and all released super crappy games, where the competitive edge was that our games were free with Ad support. This set the stage for the market getting used to not paying for games or apps (after all, your cost to get in was only $25).

Enter the big players with P2W Models
A few mobile game companies were wildly successful (Rovio, GameLoft, TenCent, etc.) along with a few big name publishers entering the arena. This was about the 2014-2015 era. This is good at first for consumers, because now these larger companies are hopping into the mobile space highly increasing the quality of games being produced. However, big companies require a big ROI, so they focus their games on being addictive, quick to produce, and quick cash grabs. You now have P2W models flourishing with whales holding these projects up. Some companies forgo creating console games completely realizing that mobile is an easier market.

And then PUBG and Fortnite happened
Then comes battle royale games. These follow largely the same model that Team Fortress 2 did, that is, lets make the game free and if we have enough players. Its still too soon to see the impact, but if players get fed up with P2W models, business models like this might continue to flourish in other multiplayer games.

A decrease in story driven, single player games
Story driven, single player games get lost in the noise. Larger publishers will probably stop making story driven games, with a few niche titles coming out annually (both in console and mobile markets). Certainly there is a lack of true story driven games being released on mobile in general from big publishers (thus why everyone flocks to the ports of older games like KOTOR, XCOM, all the FF games from Square Enix, etc).

But that leaves an open void for Indie Developers then right? The 2019 challenges

So that said, I decided to put together a game that was story driven. The quality isn't there compared to the other stuff that the big producers are putting out, but I feel like it is definitely a night and day difference than what I was putting out 6 years ago. I've tried marketing on twitter, facebook, and reddit. Here's been my results:

    Twitter:
$0 spent on ads, only organic tweeting, providing updates whenever I have something interesting to show. Since starting alpha testing, I've tweeted 95 tweets. I've built my base from 0 followers to 58. Most of these are other indie game studios that just add you to increase their own follower count. People that actually follow me because they like the game, maybe 10. To be fair, those 10 probably all came from reddit.

    https://i.redd.it/8l1167bvn3q21.png

    Facebook

I've spent about $35 on ads.

    https://i.redd.it/145rdlm3o3q21.png

    Wasn't super helpful.

My ad was the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcIcyoovZ14

My facebook page has 29 likes.

    Android Forums

I posted in just about every android gaming forum that wasn't social media. I literally got 0 views and 0 responses, those communities are dead outside of other indie devs like me trying to get exposure for their games.

    Reddit
I've posted once a month on reddit. Compared to the social media effort, I've probably spent 3% of my time on reddit. From reddit I accumulated 1360 beta testers.

    https://i.redd.it/u7or79dno3q21.png

In total, I accumulated 1.13k downloads already, almost all pre launch. Each of the spikes here has been a reddit post, the first one did really well with like 130 upvotes, I was shocked. The others did decent with ~20 upvotes. Either way, they've resulted in a lot of downloads, all this pre launch.

    https://i.redd.it/ad9xa31zo3q21.png

    Thank you r/AndroidGaming!
I have no idea if I'll succeed, but I do know this, I definitely wouldn't have succeeded without this subreddit specifically.

I've tried posting in the gaming, indie gaming, play my game, every other gaming subreddit, and no-one was supportive the way this subreddit has been (my best other reddit posts maybe have 3 upvotes regarding indie games I've built). The support has literally been phenomenal. I really think the state of releasing a game as an indie developer would be hopeless without this online community.

Handy tip for Samsung phones: use Bixby button to skip ads

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:57 AM PDT

I searched and couldn't find anyone who had posted this yet, but wanted to share something I recently found by accident. I'm using bxActions to remap the Bixby button to cancel all notifications with a short press (scroll all the way down, select "Cancel All" under the notifications header), and found that this actually skips any ad that pops up in my games.

After pressing it, I see the screen orientation switches from landscape to portrait and then back to landscape really fast, and then I'm back in my game. So far it has worked in any game I have tested it in, and even seems to still give the reward if it's for one of those "watch this 30 second ad for 500 coins!" things.

Of course, I don't condone skipping ads for devs that truly implement them in a reasonable manner, but for games that throw them in your face constantly, I have no qualms. Hope this helps others!

Baldur's Gate II and Icewind Dale Enhanced Editions are not shown in Google Play (an update from April, 3)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:03 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

We're currently working to resolve the issue with Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition being removed from the Google Play store. The issue is related to a condition in Google Play that now requires in-game privacy policies, rather than allowing apps to link to privacy policies. We're building an update that will make sure these games comply with the in-game privacy policy, but this may take some time. We apologize for the inconvenience this has created for our Google Play customers. Our goal is to get these games back into your library as soon as possible.

If you have downloaded the games you should still have access to them. If you have not downloaded the games, they should reappear in your purchases once the issue is resolved. Those who wish to seek refunds will need to request this through Google Play support.

We'll keep you posted about updates as soon as we can. In the meantime, we thank you for your feedback and understanding.

    Non-Gacha, single hero online RPG

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:48 PM PDT

Anyone have suggestions for an online RPG loot collecting style game, where you collect gear for a single character? Maybe a couple skills/ways to develop, and you just collect loot and do sequential levels that are harder or have little challenging elements to them?

Games I've liked recently are: Non-stop knight, guardian soul (gacha tho), eternium (no online), dungeon chronicle, arcane legends.

[REQUEST] Looking for twin sticks, in space, top down view, preferably with upgrades (rpg elements)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 10:08 PM PDT

A couple few years ago I played an unfinished game where you had a mother ship and you controlled a smaller ship that you would use to kill baddies and collect resources to repair the mother ship and upgrade your fighter. I don't remember at all what is was called, but I'm either looking for this exact game, or at least one with similar elements.

Edit: Well I feel dumb. Turns out I still have it installed. It's called "STARLOST" and though I've only had it open for about 30 seconds, it doesn't seem to be twin stick. I still wouldn't mind recommendations though for other games.

Started writting this as a response to an Elder Scrolls Blade post but ended up with a long 'thoughts/personal opinion' about it.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:18 AM PDT

Firstly, this is an Android game intended to be an "on the go" experience so I can understand why it is so different from the main Elder Scrolls games. That beeing said, I'd like to start adressing the main issue of the game (for me) and that's it's economy system.

    -The game monetization system-

As a phone game (and even PC/console games now at days...), it has microtransactions. This isn't bad, I'm all about paying for something if it's worth it or if I had a great experience with it, the problem about it is that the whole game system is built around those microtransactions.

You can get every single thing by paying X ammount of money and well, at least on a single-player game, this could ruin your gameplay loop and your pockets but not here since this game will also have a PvP system when it gets out of beta, a PvP system that it's already broken before even the game being released as you could tell. Biggest pockets will rule this game's PvP.

Well, OK, PvP isn't out yet so let's talk about what we can do now...

The goal of the game right now is to build your ruined city/town with the resources you've been gattering during your missions. There're 3 main resources right now (I'm level 15, it may be more of them at higher levels).

The town has it's own separate level and you can only level up the town by building more structures (such as shops, monuments or houses). The town level affects the whole gameplay loop and that "it's OK" since it's part of the main gameplay and not a side-minigame kind of thing where you can build your own Elder Scrolls town. The thing is that the town level is attached to some of the missions you're able to do, wich in my opinion has little to no sense since that should be attached to you character level instead... but the game needs some way to slow everything so microtransactions are "worth" the investment. How and Why?.....

    -The building materials-

The main resources you need to get from the missions are kinda hard to get, there should be no issue finding them but that's not the problem. The problem is that the quantity you require in order to build your town is hard to get (unless you pay).

    Let me explain this...

You'll be doing missions in order to get out of the town since right now there is no 'open world' thing in the game. Wherever you go for your mission, you should get about 1-5 wood or 1-5 limestone or 1-5 copper just from the loot you should be searching in the mission's 'dungeon' (bright stuff that yells 'touch me' for an interaction). There are other materials for other things such as potions or weapons so the materials you need in order to progress aren't even a guarantee whenever you interact with looteable stuff.

If you're asked for (first building levels) 95-Wood, 46-Limestone and 42-Copper, you could see a problem by getting 'just' the loot I've talked about but don't worry... you have the chest (loot boxes) with more crafting material so the grinding is easier so, why not get right into the point?

    -The Chest system (loot boxes)-

First off, there are two type of Chest in the game... the F2P, mostly a waste of time but needed in order to progress and the 'real deal chest' where you pay an ammount of real money for a chest with a lot of building materials (500 of each for example and not even talking about the pricier chest out there).I'll talk about the pay to win chests first because they're pretty straight forward...they're... the best option to progress in the game, the best option to build your character, the best option to raise your economy in the game, the best option to do every single thing in the game but playing the game itself.

Now let's talk about the P2P loot boxes (or chests), this are pretty much the opposite but they have something in common...

You need this chests in order to progress because here you could get (personal experience) about 5-30 crafting materials depending of the chest you're opening. 30 sounds like quite a bit if you need around 40 of that material but remember this, you need those 30 X to be exactly 30 Wood or 30 Limestone or 30 Copper because if they're not, you just 'wasted' 6h waiting for that chest to open.

There are chest with lower waiting times but you wont be getting that many crafting materials from those.

You will get more materials from the chest, from 2 items to 8 depending of the type of chest you're opening but they're mostly useless and a waste of time and resource space.

So, as for now, I've only seen this chests:

Wooden chest: 2 items and 5 secs to open.

Iron Chest: 4-6 items and 3h to open (yes, from 5 sec to 3h).

Golden Chest: 6-8 items and 6h to open.

Ok, there're chests and you need to open them in order to progress in any way other than character level (kinda useless for anything other than learning perks). With 6h long opening times and the need to get those chests opened in order to get the possibility of opening some nice loot, you could end up with quite a lot of chest because you get quite a lot of them but, don't worry, there's a limit so you don't get every chest in the game (forgot to mention that there's also a equipment limit so you can't get infinite weapons or armor).

1 chest for each mission completition and at least 1 more inside the mission. I've been getting about 4 chests at max in 2-10min missions. Every single chest but 1 where wooden chests and you can't get more than one chest opened at a time. This brings the whole thing to my main issue with the game. How the f**** should I be playing this game?

    Let me explain my issue...

If I can't open more than one chest at a time, I'd want to open the more worthy chest first (6h wait) but while that chest is being opened I've already reached the chest limit with 5sec opening time crappy chests (5 secs that are pointless and could be a straight up "open now" but you know... mobile game... waiting for things so you can actually play...).

If you reach the limit you can't get any other chest. You just can't get them because you can't get rid of the crappy chests you've been looting until now. You have to wait for the 6h chest to open so you can open those freakin' 12 wooden chests waiting in your inventory (you know... you could also pay real money to Bethesda so your chests get opened).

Well, that's just the start of the issue because at the point I'm right now in the game, I don't have 12 useless wooden chests but 12 little less useless Iron chests, those with a 3h timer. That's 36h of waiting while I can't open any other chest to make progress and I can't get rid of them if I find a better chest out there. Pretty crazy the fact that I have to wait more than the ammount of time I've been playing the game.

With that out of the way...

TL:DR - The main goal of the game is character AND town progression but both of them are made by opening chests. The chests are given to the player when a mission is completed or he/she finds them in the mission dungenon. If everything I try to do to progress gives me chests and the chests forces me to wait or pay with real money, by playing the waiting game, Elder Scrolls Blade is just another "wait 3h play 10min" game that insults the player base by it's monetization system.

Can't wait for the release of the game to see those players willing to pay hundreads of dolars just to be ahead of everyone even with a level 1 town and level 1 character.

PD: This is not intended to be a full review since I've not talked about how the fighting and some other things are made since I wanted to adress those things first. This may be my own issue but I thought it'd be fun to share and read your opinions. Have a great day!

In case you've never played or heard of it, it's a game in which you play an armadillo with simple controls. You hold to make your character fall downwards and is based off races where you time going downwards with hills and slopes to build speed and hit big jumps. There were also powerups much like mario kart.

    Help! Can't find older game

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:07 PM PDT

I used to play this game but I can't recall the name. It was like platoon games but the bigger "hero" type guys were robots each with their own skills and little bots that would follow them . the goal was to build up your army and eliminate the opposing player. I believe it was like a kinda 3d top down view game. But I can't recall the game name. I also think the main colors were blue and orange

Looking for turn based pvp RPG recommendations, with a high focus on character builds/in depth mechanics.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:24 AM PDT

I love competitive games that have a high focus on build creativity.

Usually card games fill this niche but from time to time you can get some RPGs which add a nice character progression feel as well.

One such game I've been playing is Vampire's Fall: Origins. However my only problem which this game is it lacks skill choices and class depth (IMO).

When I was a kid I used to LOVE the artix games such as adventure quest and epic duel (take turns attacking with skill combinations depending on how you build your character).

Are there any games like these on Android?

Would prefer if it wasn't one of those grind for team mates, auto play, time limited, grind fest style games but if one stands out as exceptional then please share.

    Thanks!!

It could be any genre, f2p/p2w/free/paid/ads etc..., doesn't matter how aggressive monatization system is.

Hey, I am looking for a good android game:
    * Not too much story (in means of a lot of text) because I listen to audiobooks and podcasts all of the time
    * I need to be able to mute it
    * I like real games by the means of no f2p or p2w mechanics. I don't have a problem with paying for a game, for real content.
    * Maybe a good crafting game?

Games I liked a lot on android:
    * Monument Valley 1+2
    * Plants Vs. Zombies 1
    * Ridiculous Fishing
    * Game Dev Story
    * You Must Built a Boat
    * Eufloria
