Remember how Google once left Google Voice abandoned without any updates for 5 years and then suddenly remembered they owned it?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:56 PM PDT

    Yeah. It was weird.

I had used the Voice since it launched in 2009 so I could have a local number where I was attending college until I moved in 2015 across the country. Then all of a sudden, 5 years after it was last updated, Google released an update to the app and have since kept it updated with bug fixes, features, and more. Still surprised it's outlived so many of their other ventures.

The bundled non-removable virus that is called Lenovo User Experience

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:27 AM PDT

I recently rooted my (old-ish) Lenovo tb2-x30f tablet with official firmware 6.0.1, and set out to uninstall or disable all the unwanted apps that made it so sluggish, but I've hit a snag. I disabled the ones I could and froze the others in Titanium Backup. These were the first to go:

    • Lenovo ID

    • Market Feedback Agent

    • User Experience

So far, so good. Who needs that stuff anyway? Imagine my surprise when Magisk asked me if I wanted to give User Experience superuser privileges. Why would Lenovo User Experience need superuser privileges? How did it even run? I just disabled it!?

I checked settings, and yes, it was running despite being disabled. I stopped it, and disabled everything I could in Autostarts:

    • After Startup

    • Connectivity changed

    • User present

I restarted, and there it was again, still disabled, still running. I searched the entire file system for com.lenovo.newue.service from / down and deleted everything I could find (a folder in /data/data and something in the Dalvik cache, I think).

Nope. Disabled, deleted, and in all ways terminated with extreme prejudice, and still running. I installed NetGuard, blocked Lenovo ID, Market Feedback Agent, and User Experience, and checked the log. Something called "HOPO6" is trying to get out (to ff02::16 whatever that is), but is not always blocked. "HOPO6" has to be one of the 3 since it was being blocked, but why wasn't it blocked every time? I'm later going to search for anything containing the string "HOPO6", but that'll take ages.

Searching again, I've just found the folder /data/data/com.lenovo.newue.service which contains the folders cache, code_cache, databases, reaperfiles, and shared_prefs. The folder reaperfiles is empty, but there's also a .LenovoReaper folder in /storage/emulated/0/ which contains a 17 bytes long text file called did with the serial number (twice):

    HA0LKxxx HA0LKxxx

After a restart /data/data/com.lenovo.newue.service is back again, but not .LenovoReaper (yet). Hang on, there's also LenovoReaper with the same contents.

I don't like this. I can't kill the official app virus, but I'm going to try to set all the files attributes to 000. That sort of worked. The files don't get rebuilt when I restart, but they disappear if I clear the data. The only thing that works right now is to block communications, and I'm not sure if it can't bypass NetGuard in some way.

First and last Lenovo product I'll ever buy or use for anything personal.

Removed features since the Pie update, and the state of Samsung tech support.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:16 AM PDT

I recently contacted Samsung because I noticed my Note 9 was missing a feature that's always been available. Tech support confirmed Pie rolled back the option to disable the proximity sensor during calls (dimming the screen when put up to your ear). Albeit not a very important feature, I can't understand what made them want to remove options after an update. It seems pretty counter productive to roll back options while trying to move forward.

The email also included at the end, "Please note that email as a contact option on our website will be discontinued as of April 3rd , 2019." I'm not well versed in the tech support industry, but I can't understand why the would get rid of the tried and true, best option for tech support.

This got me thinking, what other kinds of features were rolled back during pie?

    Gboard Dictation Typing syllables?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 06:17 AM PDT

Sometimes, when my bad spelling and swipe texting team up to get the best of me, I cannot manage to get a word to appear thus I use the dictation mic to get that word. Well, this morning I did this and said "Aggravate" (yes, chuckle all you want that I couldn't remember if it was aggra- or aggre-) and gboard typed it out as I was saying it! Instead of waiting to type the whole word.

So, to test it, I did it again but said indecision really slowly and it typed out each syllable as I moved their the word! Has anyone else seen this? I don't think it was happening a few days ago and i don't see that gboard has updated in the last two days, so this surprised me.
