Wait for upcoming GTX 1160/1170 GPUs?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:22 PM PST

I'm in the US and really interested in getting a gaming laptop for around $1000. After some research it seems like the OVERPOWERED Gaming Laptop 17+ is a steal if you can catch it in stock. (And I chatted with Walmart who says it should be sometime soon, whatever that's worth)

While checking out some reviews on it, a commenter mentioned waiting for the soon upcoming release of laptops that include the new 1160 or 1170 GPUs. I know it's a constant theme in the realm of computer deals to always be trying to time these new releases, even to the point of never getting a dang computer... But what are your thoughts on this particular hardware upgrade, whether it's actually coming soon and if we'll see laptops with them within the next month or 2.

Or if you have another alternative to the laptop I'm looking for I'm all ears.

Need help deciding between Hauwei Matebook X Pro 2018 and Dell XPS 13 (9370)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:36 PM PST

I'm studying Web Development online so the laptop will primarily be used for that. Also web browsing and youtube. When I'm home it will be hooked up to an external monitor but I need something I can easily take with me to work to study during my breaks, or to coffee shops and tech events. My current 3 year old gigantic Asus ROG laptop doesn't meet those needs.

I'm interested in the Matebook for its 3:2 screen ratio which would be nice for coding. But I hate that it looks like a knockoff macbook and the Huawei logo is ugly imo.

The XPS 13 is 4k but is a standard 16:9 ratio. However I love the rose gold. It looks very much like a status item and I'd feel great using that at a coffee shop sipping an espresso.

They are both on sale for 1300$ right now. Spec-wise they both have i7 chips but the Matebook has 16gb ram, the mx150 graphics card and 512gb ssd. VS 8gb ram, integrated graphics, and 256gb ssd of the XPS. (I use an external HDD so I don't know if a larger ssd is relevent, but the 16gb ram is more future proof)

TLDR; I want the Matebook for its screen and the XPS for its beautiful design and premium build.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    $1300 USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Important, thus the two ultrabooks.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows, Linux

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I have a future interest in Adobe Suite programs for Web / UX Design. Also compiling Python. However neither of these things are relevant for me now.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Not concerned about using the laptop for gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

If anyone has tried both I'd like to know which keyboard you preferred. If anyone can share their experience coding on either laptop that would be appreciated.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I want this laptop to last me 3 - 4 or more years.

I'm aware that Huawei is releasing a refresh of the matebook x pro. But it will be outside my budget and I don't want to wait 2+ months.

Long lasting ultrabook for college (Under $1200)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:53 AM PST

I currently have a six y/o MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM and a battery that is abysmal. Entering college, I'll need a laptop that has a lightweight sleek design but also has the capability of performing occasional photo/video editing well.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1,250,000 KRW($1110), South Korea

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2 in 1 with a GOOD pen would be nice(Surface), but is not prioritized. Battery life is at the top of my list.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like a sleek design similar to the MacBook Pro I've been using. No bulkier or heavier than the 2012-2015 models.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 to 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I like to edit photos and videos as a hobby. Gaming is nice, but if it's at the expense of the laptop's form factor, I can live without it. Lightroom, Premiere Pro(once in a blue moon)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any games that aren't too demanding would be Telltale, Old AAA games, simulator games, gmod at 1080p medium.

I would like to game, but can do without. Don't hesitate to suggest laptops with integrated graphics!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality similar or just a smidge down to MacBooks. Speakers just have to be decent. Fingerprint or Windows Hello is preferred. A screen with little to no bezels at all, yes please. A display that is bright! A display that is 80 to 100 sRGB, 58+ AdobeRBG!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Because Mac support is so limited in Korea(certain programs are only available for Windows) I have no choice but to buy a Windows laptop. Thing is, I'm going to study abroad to the US in less than an year or a bit more and I would like to upgrade to a newer MacBook(I'd much prefer Mac OS) So I'm contemplating whether to buy a a bit more expensive Windows laptop and keep using that or just buy a Surface Go and later sell it when I move. Thank you!!

I already have a list of models but indecisive because they have their cons(mostly the battery life). Specs are usually i5 8265U, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD. (I don't have any LG or Samsung models because they're overpriced here in Korea)

    Dell Inspiron 7000 2 in 1 (13 or 15) $1130

    Acer Swift 5(2019) $980

    Lenovo Yoga S730 $1025

    Lenovo Yoga 730 $1115

    Asus Zenbook UX433FN $1080

    HP Envy 13(MX150) $1120

    HP Envy 13(UHD 620 $990

    MSI PS63(GTX 1050) $1310

    MSI PS63(UHD 620) $1115

Surface Go 8GB, 128GB SSD with Cover and Pen $800 (Now I see the total cost, I don't think this is worth it lol)

    15", UK, £900-1,200 - laptop recommendations please

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:18 AM PST

    Hi there,

After a real problem with my last laptop a Dell Inspiron 7577 I'm now looking for a replacement laptop.

    My budget is between £900-1,200.

As a Web Developer I'm ideally looking for something which will comfortably run Adobe Photoshop, Visual Studio and do some light video editing too. I may also use the laptop for some gaming so a decent Graphics Card would be welcome. As a guide, my 7577 had a Intel i7 7700HQ processor, 16GB RAM, 1050Ti Graphics Card and a 1TB and 128GB SSD, so ideally I'd be looking for something with a similar spec.

My 7577 was a 15.6" but due to the bezel and number pad it was more like a 17". It was also a heavy beast at 2.7kg.

It does need to be portable as I commute for 4 hours a day (about an hour of this is spent on foot) so maybe a 15" maximum would be good and lighter the better.

Ideally I want to avoid laptops with a similar screen to the 7577 as I have a feeling I'll have the same "white spot" problems. For example the replacement for the 7577 has the same screen setup. Also I want to avoid touchscreens as I'd never use it to it's full potential and would be a waste of budget in my opinion.

So in summary... - Lightweight - £900-1,200 budget - Good screen (thin bezel, high refresh rate, 15") - An i7 processor - Good RAM (8GB+ minimum) - Decent graphics card (started looking at ones with a GTX 1060 or 1070, but aware there is a new generation that's released following CES 2019) - Decent sizes for the HDD (1TB) and SSD (256GB+). If the SSD is large enough though I'm happy just to have that for now - Support for Visual Studio Code, Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator, plus gaming (e.g. Battlefield 5) - UK retailers only please

Many thanks in advance. Any questions or amends needed just let me know!

Just bought a Dell G7, but not sure it fits my needs

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:06 PM PST

I just posted the following text in the Dell subreddit, but it might be more appropriate here. What is the best laptop for my needs? I paid about 1k tax included for the G7, and it is at the very top of my budget.

    Post here:

I am not as computer literate as most on Reddit, so I'm seeking a little advice.

My last laptop conked out after a blue screen of death on Monday. Today, I went to an electronics store to purchase a new one. The dude at the store steered me towards the Dell G7, but after listening to some YouTube reviews, I'm not sure if it is the best model for my needs. It's also really expensive.

I do some lighter gaming (escapist stuff, Civilization, The Sims, etc) and like to edit content using Adobe software like Photoshop and Premiere.

I have a smaller computer that I use for travel, so I'm not too worried about the G7's weight. What concerns me is that I bought this to be my main work space computer, and I want to make sure that it will perform. I saw a few videos mention that the colors are way off... It didn't seem that way at the store, but it's harder to tell in that moment. Just how wonky are these colors? I haven't opened my box yet, and I still have time to return or exchange.

A laptop for my sister funded by my father's money..

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:35 AM PST

My sister has just started her final year of secondary education and is in need of a laptop! As it is not my own nor funded by myself, I have had little incentive (I'm lazy) to do much research and was hoping someone could do the work for me! It should:

    • Be <$1000
    • Roll over into tertiary education needs nicely
      • Run the usual student programs (Word, Chrome - nothing too fancy)
    • Decent screen resolution for visually appealing media playback
    • Not too bulky and aesthetically pleasing

All suggestions will be looked at, I'm happy for this post to take a scrapbook theme (withing subreddit guidelines) from which we could make a decision from . I have been rocking a Asus Zenbook UX305-FA since early 2016 and it has done me pretty well. Something similar I think would be good. The only reason that we haven't bought an Apple Macbook is the price-tag associated.

Quick question, should I go for this refurbished Dell laptop, or this 2nd hand Lenovo? (links in post)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:07 AM PST

So I'm trying to decide between this refurbished Dell laptop, or this 2nd hand Lenovo

My main needs are for writing when I go travelling abroad, so a lot of tabs open, light photo editing (lightroom), good 2-in-1 set-up, stylus use, good powerful specs that'll last a long time, light. Maybe light gaming but that's not essential.

Which is the better laptop out of the two? In case the links above don't work, here are the specs for each:

    Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga X1 1st gen i7 6600U 16GB RAM, £600 on Ebay Display: 14" multi-touch LED 2560 x 1440
Processor: Intel Core i7-6600U 2.6 GHz
RAM: 16 GB DDR3 (soldered) Disk Drive: 512 GB SSD
    Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 520
Keyboard: Backlit in UK layout (retracts in tablet mode) Camera: 720 HD Ports: 3x USB 3.0; 1x HDMI; 1x Mini DisplayPort; 1x OneLink+; 1x micro SD; 1x micro SIM; 1x 3.5mm audio; 1x DC-in
    Connectivity: WiFi 802.11ac; Bluetooth 4.1
Security: 1x Kensington lock; Fingerprint reader
    Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Dimensions: 33.3 x 22.9 x 1.7 cm
    Weight: 1.27kg

    Or:

    Dell Inspiron 14 - 5482 2-in-1 Refurbished laptop, £625 Inspiron 14 - 5482 2-in-1

    Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8565U (4 Core, 1.80 GHz, 8MB Cache, 15W)

    Windows 10 Home (64bit)

    8GB (1X8GB) 2666MHz DDR4 Memory Non-ECC

256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive

    Intel UHD Graphics

Intel integrated 9560AC dual band 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0

LCD Back Cover : Platinum Silver (Touch)

Palmrest with Finger print Reader - Platinum Silver

    Primary 3-cell 42WHr Battery(Integrated)

    14.0-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) LED-Backlit Touch Display IPS Pen Enabled

    Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Non-backlit Keyboard

Would really appreciate any advice, thank you!

Cheap, durable laptop less than $100 used or new

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 02:52 AM PST

I am looking for a cheap laptop that I can use as a Debian machine on the go and as a small server at home. I would like a hard drive bay or two, and if possible, easy access to the bay(s) from the back. I am looking for something that could definitely survive a drop or five. The specs don't matter as long as it's not worse than 2 GB of RAM and 2 GHz dual core. On-board storage doesn't matter since I would be using my own hard drives. Likewise to the spec choice, I don't care about the screen, as long as it's resolution is better than 720p.

Currently I have the Inspiron 1147, but it certainly isn't holding up to the test of time (~5 years old). I'm afraid of opening it up one day and a stripping a screw.

I would like your suggestions on what laptops, used or new, that I could consider.

Laptop for work and gaming Budget: $850

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:46 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $850 soft cap. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably under 14in.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. A little bit of photo editing. Metro 2033, Tomb Raider, and apex legends.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The most intense games I'll be playing are probably going to be metro 2033 and apex legends. FPS doesn't matter as long as it's 30+.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is all I ask I'll be using a mouse %99 of the time.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want it to be as small as possible hoping for 10-14 inch.

    Laptop suggestion

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:18 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800$, Romania (I might be able to push for 1000$)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I am looking for a laptop that has a battery that could last for more than 5h, 4-core processor, 8 ram, ssd and the most important thing, a bright and color accurate display (1080p). As for the 2 in 1, I am indifferent and long as it meets the requirements (which I hope aren't too many requirements to fit the budget)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It isn't, but as it is not a gaming laptop I would expect not to be a monster like Predator 21x^^.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size?

15 would be great, but I'm open to any size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Adobe (often - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; rarely - Premiere Pro, After effects). Gaming - not often, and if so, light games such as DotA 2.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't think I will play games on the laptop. At most Dota 2 or overwatch in case of a LAN party (once in a year); 50-60 fps on medium settings shouldn't be hard to achieve on these new graphic cards, APU even.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A sturdy keyboard would be great with a backlit or illumination and a precise trackpad. I don't fancy in particular a touch screen or a finger-print reader, nor would I use an optical drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I like the very much the Legion y530 and its keyboard design is spacious and backlited, but I want something with a better battery life. Dell XPS 15 is lovely, but is too expensive and I not looking for a 4k.

Thanks in advance for any recommentation!

$2000 or Less to Run Simulations, Some Games, and to Consume Media

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:11 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $2000 or less, United States

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2-in-1 or touchscreens are not a top priority. Having the best possible specs and battery life, preferably 8 or so hours at idle, is important.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It needs to be portable so anything over like 5lbs or 30mm thick is probably too much.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows or Linux

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6" or less

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Simulink, Aspen Simulation, Matlab, Mathematica. Casual gaming on the side, mostly esports titles. Would like to run most games at 60 fps at medium settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Needs to be durable but not a brick. A keyboard that is clicky but not noisy. A responsive touchpad, possibly with buttons instead of having to press.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Want something that can handle the simulation software I will be doing, can do some occasionally gaming at moderate settings, decent battery life when just browsing or streaming video (can just be plugged into the wall for heavy loads), comfortable keyboard, not feel like cheap plastic, and can last several years before feeling outdated. Thermal throttling is an issue I see come up a lot and would like to find a laptop that can avoid this as much as possible.

    Looking for new laptop

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 01:49 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Denmark, max around 1000$ or 7000 dkk

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Great battery life. And better specs wouldn't be the saddest thing if you know what I mean

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Semi important, I would mostly be using it for University/productivity

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14 inches, I don't like them bigger and smaller than that just sucks working on

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Standard productivity, maybe some lightweight photo editing. If it can run CIV VI I wouldn't mind but it's not a requirement

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CIV VI if feasible

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A great touchpad, and a good build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I'm looking for an ultrabook, I'm considering the Matebook D 13 R5 but wanted to ask here first

    [US] General Use/Light Gaming $800-1000

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:02 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US. Budget is 800-1000, but it's not strict

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't want 2 in 1, battery life isn't very important to me, looking for good specs mostly.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important, I like the aesthetic tho

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would only play very light games. I do 99% of my gaming at my desktop.

    -League of Legends

    -Hearthstone

    -MTG Arena

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My ideal is a non-gaming laptop that can handle light gaming. That sounds weird, but I really don't like the look and the loud fans of gaming laptops, since I'll be bringing this laptop to college/work/wherever. Bringing a huge laptop with a giant MSI logo and red stripes with LED keyboard and loud fans would be awkward. If there are gaming laptops with a more subtle look and quiet fans, or even just fans that are quiet when not stressed, I would consider it. The biggest thing I'm concerned about is that I'll be using it a lot to screenshare over discord/skype. I'm a private league of legends coach so people will be screensharing their own games to me and then I'll be screensharing a recording of that game to them as well, and in my experience that's pretty graphic/cpu intensive, I don't actually know which. Also do laptops even have ethernet slots anymore? Where could I get an adapter?

LG Gram 2019 or Lenovo IdeaPad 730s

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:46 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around US$1,000, U.S.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. In this order, best specifications, then good battery.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Definitely something easy to carry and robust enough to not worry about breaking.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Will work with large spreadsheets.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just some R programming, VB, a little bit of GIS. Most of the time excel and loading dozens of firefox tabs.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a fingerprint reader, good keyboard and reliable build.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Based in the requirements, should I have a core i5 or core i7? Thanks for your time.

I want to get a P52, change my mind

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:57 PM PST

I am an Electrical Engineering student in the USA. I posted earlier today asking about laptops under $750 and after doing some research I have come to find ... a lot of drek.

    This is my current laptop:

    Late 2011 Macbook Pro

    Intel Core i5-2435M

    16 GB DDR3 RAM

2 x 250 Samsung SSDs (I use Windows 7 exclusively at this point, and don't touch my OSX SSD)

I have always liked the idea of getting a mobile workstation. I am travelling abroad for work this summer and I would like to have a powerful laptop to do design work on while my desktop sits at home in the USA.

I need to have a good keyboard. I love the keyboard on my macbook, it is defintely more clicky than newer macbooks. I also have a Razer black widow chroma for my PC (I like this keyboard as well).

I would like a laptop that supports bluetooth, my current laptop does not (or at least not on windows, or im bad at drivers).

The P52 looks like it has a professional looking design and form factor and I have read that it has a good keyboard. I like the idea of a dedicated NVIDIA chip, (my desktop has a 1050ti and that is plenty for now). RAM is always a plus and I would like minimum 8 GB.

If I wiggle my budget a bit is it worth it to spend $850 to $1000 on a low end P series? Or should I try buying a new battery for my macbook (which is struggling to go 2 hrs without a charge at this point)? Thoughts?

Here is my form from earlier in the day.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $750, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, then battery life, zero desire for touchscreen

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would rather have a good bulky laptop than a bad thin laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. 7 or 10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. My previous laptop has been a 13 inch 2011 Macbook pro. I am pretty used to this size. 15/16 inches or smaller as long as it is 1920x1080.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. MATLAB, Labview, Quartus, Modelsim, Codewarrior, etc

I also do photoshop and sony vegas as a hobby so I can appreciate rendering and editing capabilities.

Edit: I should mention that I already have a fairly good desktop PC. I will be travelling abroad though this summer and want a better laptop, and one that can still handle a good workload.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If I was use to it for any games, DotA 2 at 1080p, 60fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a LAN port. SSD would be nice. Like to have a lot of ports. Headphone jack. SD slot would be nice, but obviously those are not common.

Edit: Also would like bluetooth capabilities.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Bear down, Chicago Bears

Graphic Designer here, need help choosing between these laptops. Open to suggestions.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:29 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000$, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best screen possible for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter, though I suppose Windows. Mac is nice, just too pricey.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or close to it. May accept 14".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Illustrator, graphics design work, web design, etc. Some light gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming not a requirement.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As good a screen as possible. Also build quality. I want this to last as long as possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have posted a form here a few days ago and I think I've narrowed down the choices to the few below. I've included the form just in case anyone would like to suggest any others. I may be open to other suggestions.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-t-series/ThinkPad-T480/p/22TP2TT4800 The Lenovo Thinkpad T480 looks like a solid buy. There's a 944$ option with an i5 8250U, Intel 620 iGPU, 8GB RAM and a 500GB HDD. Not entirely sure of the screen quality here.

https://www.eluktronics.com/N850HP6 The Eluktronic N850HP6 has a 965$ option with an older i7 7700HQ, Nvidia 1060, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. Color accuracy is reported to be 85% sRGB and 56% AdobeRGB (not bad, good enough overall). The body is made out of plastic which is concerning.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Yoga-730-15/p/88YG7000965 The Lenovo Yoga 730 was suggested to me in another thread and it looks promising. The 850$ option provides an i5 8250U, Nivdia 1050, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. The body is made out of aluminum, which is a plus. According to https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Yoga-730-15IKB-i7-8550U-GTX-1050-SSD-4K-Convertible-Review.317630.0.html the screen has 90% SRGB and 39% AdobeRGB (worse and better in some aspects, not bad overall).

https://outlet.us.dell.com/ArbOnlineSales/Online/InventorySearch.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&brandid=2201&sign=PXhcOSHtr1T4IOw%2fPR7UdcHZE3l%2fVlyQJyG8jKZX5v%2fO9%2bQDpfcyFhLgZ5XduvtOS%2bwxgE2M3yyAkTj8ybuMXS%2fYSynffALUJHxym0hjYj1%2fnMH2876G7UuUCTGADTty%2bSdXzrOBlm%2flWWa93N2mLndvmmHeRspwyOXHrhP4uG6%2ffxnzWefGJbapEKMml%2bCnb0R29e9FdOXYdNLNGqL1o7nlHm5bfVCI9VXdLzC2Oc%2borN86cRTA4Y%2bEFCd1AvjN703xhVU0yz9%2fxPI%2fm4EctM8eP5XYliD0uXdQm%2bhxq%2f9fuytnj52TvpOZwR1WTgP%2bYi5xGzd9CIk%3d The certified refurbished Dell XPS 15 - 9570 has a 1045$ option (823$ without GPU and lesser CPU) that comes with an i7 8250H, Nvidia 1050TI, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. The body is made out of a mix of aluminum, magnesium and carbon, so solid overall. The screen is reported to be 96% sRGB and 62% AdobeRGB (the best so far). There is a more expensive 1165$ option that supposedly includes a 100% sRGB% screen, is this worth it?

Storage is not an issue and neither is the processor. I imagine modern processors can handle Photoshop just fine. A good GPU helps with drawing larger things in Photoshop so I prefer a laptop with at least a decent GPU. I plan to eventually get a color accurate monitor, until then, I need something that's good enough.

Whatever I get, it's gotta last for several years so I want the build quality to be reliable and solid. I am currently leaning towards the the Dell, any thoughts? I am not very familiar with these models so any input/reviews would be really appreciated.

Medium-High as possible gaming laptop for 1500 US

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:35 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    US - 1500

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

Best possible specs for money, battery doesn't matter.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

    Which OS do you require?

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size?

    15 at least

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

    Light to Medium gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Xcom 2, Skyrim, Total War: Warhammer 2 will be the ones I would instantly launch and would like the possibility to play newer games down the line. I would like at least 60fps on medium or high but anything higher is better.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices?

A CD drive would be helpful and at least one usb port is necessary, but the more the merrier.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The budget is 1500 but I can go up to 1800 if the computer is significantly better. I know nothing but the bare minimum about computers and such so anything you all suggest is basically law for me.

    MSI PS63 or Ideapad 530S-15IKB-564?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:24 AM PST

    MSI - https://www.pcdiga.com/portatil-msi-15-6-ps63-modern-8m-073pt

    LENOVO - https://www.worten.pt/informatica/computadores/computadores-portateis/portatil-lenovo-ideapad-530s-15ikb-564-15-6-intel-core-i7-8550u-16-gb-ram-512-gb-ssd-nvidia-geforce-mx-150-6676457

I'm about to buy the MSI, because it has a better CPU and all I need specs wise is a good CPU and SSD. But I'm curious about the screens of eachother. I can't seem to find the screen specs of this exact LENOVO. Dav2d stated the MSI screen is good but notebookcheck tests doesn't seem to picture it as a good one. I'd be grateful if someone could help me find out what's the better screen and how much better it is.

    Drawing/Art and General Use

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:49 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $1000 preferred, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 touchscreen for drawing with a pen. Best specifications would be as long as it can run certain programs (listed below) without any issues as well as a web browser like Chrome/Firefox.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Never hurts to have, but if it cuts into costs, probably worth passing on for me in all honesty. But I'll keep my options open anyway.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferred simply because I know it well. No experience in anything else and not sure how complicated they are to learn.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. My previous laptop was 13.3" so no smaller than that I'd say.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe premiere stuff (photoshop, illustrator, after-effects). Web browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, etc.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen for drawing is a must. Build quality never hurts, but as long as it will last a long time I'm happy.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I just need a new 2 in 1 laptop for art/drawing in programs, but I also require it for general use too. My laptop I used has lasted a very long time but it's showing it's age, the pen is not registering always, I cracked the screen recently due to completely random accident, and the programs are just a bit slow and can be finicky. A new one would be a nice improvement and better quality of life for my hobbies.

    Thank you!

Mainly a laptop for general use, but also for video/photo editing and microsoft office work

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:03 PM PST

Hi guys, so I've been researching this sub the past few days and looking at different guides for what would be the best fit for me in terms of finding a suitable laptop for most of my needs.

I used to game quite a lot on PC but adult life has taken over for now and most of the time on the computer I spend writing, looking at videos or surfing reddit so I could really use some helpful advise on what some of you experts might suggest, I would greatly appreciate it.

So far I have looked at 3 Acer models :

    Acer Aspire E 15 - E5-576G-5762

    Acer Aspire E 15 - E5-576-392H

    Acer Swift 3

    Surface :

    Microsoft Surface

    Asus :

    Vivobook

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Max $850

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Quite important that it is thin and light

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows or MAC

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Photoshop, Adobe Premier, Microsoft Office

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like something that is touch-screen, finger-print reader, backlight keyboard. None of these things are terribly important though.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am currently leaning towards Microsoft Surface, because it seems like it might be the most user friendly, high quality model of the lot. Honestly though I don't know computers like I used to and won't be using the laptop as frequently as most other people would which is why I also have in the back of my mind, should I really pay this amount of money for something I might not use too much? Essentially I'm just looking for the best general laptop that is jack-of-all-traits and isn't TOO steep in price that I can also use for a bit of work if I need to.

I know there are probably hundreds of different models that can all be considered, and if you have any other ideas I would be very grateful.
