This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    White Knight Weeb

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:36 AM PST

It took me 2 years to finish this setup, well actually I always get new ideas so it's not finished just yet, however I will only do minor changes to the setup. Like add sound sensitive rgb leds on those glass panels holding the speakers.
All the parts are listed here, including extra pictures and one from 2016 for comparison, what the story behind the setup is and some fun facts about the setup. https://builds.gg/luka/white-knight-weeb-8381

Finished building my first ($550) PC this weekend.

It's not the fanciest but it's mine.

I am not sure how to attach a picture besides doing this: https://imgur.com/a/U6DAhvb

Edit: Here are the parts I used https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3WVjMZ. My budget didn't include the keyboard, mouse, monitor, LEDs, and windows activation. So I did go a bit over budget.

    I finished my PC build!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 07:37 PM PST

Thank you guys for helping me pick the parts to this build!

So for the longest time, I had been playing on a pc that I built for only $300. That was rough. Today, I finished my new PC build!

This is the picture, sorry it doesn't show the inside: https://i.imgur.com/yaMora0.jpg

It's my first time so I'm not too knowledgeable. ~$1000 budget. Using for basic gaming, max settings not too important. No plans to overclock.

    I'm excited but nervous!

    FINALLY "Done"

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 10:58 PM PST

I started this build in June of 2018 and it has morphed and changed and swapped cases and so much more but it is finally "done". Very few things I want to change at this point and they're all cosmetic (mostly). I usually don't post much on Reddit but I fuckin love this thing and I need to show her off.

Side note: First thing to go will be the 240 AIO cause it really triggers me not having all the top fans level with a 360 rad but given how much I've spent already it's hard to tell my wife I need a new cooler at this point 😂😂

Specs are: Ryzen 5 2600x, RTX 2080 Strix OC, 16GB G Skill Trident Z 3200Mhz, Asus Strix X470-F, 3x White Corsair LL 120s, 6x Noctua NF-P12 Redux 1700s, and of course the Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic

Putting a WD Red NAS hard drive into a pc, not a NAS, will it be reliable?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:17 PM PST

The motherboard has 4 SATA connectors, with this extra hard drive they would all be in use, I would have 3 3.5 inch HDDs close together. My main concern is reliability.

Will this HDD fail relatively quickly when I put it in a pc instead of a nas? I've seen comments that it will and that it won't. So I'd like to ask that here.

I could also decide to buy an external (8 TB) hard drive instead if that gives me a more reliable hard drive.

    Finished a Build this weekend! RTX 2070 / i7-8700k

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:26 AM PST

    Link - https://imgur.com/a/E5c2jCr

Spent about 1850-1900 on everything for just the rig. I'm using an old 1080p monitor for streaming video on the right, and left is a Dell SG2417DG that i game on. Great price/product for a gsync monitor! And holy wow what a difference in resolution. I was on the fence about upgrading my monitor to start with to keep costs down and am super happy i did now.

I learned a lot of stuff over this process. Honestly the most confusing thing was the wiring for the RGB Lighting for the case/fans. I still don't think it is 100%, I can't control all the lights from one spot with Asus AURA or whatever the lighting control software was called. Don't really care though, I don't really want ridiculous case lighting anyway, and I leave the lights that are there static. I cut a PCI port cover and zip-tied the physical RGB Controller to it so i don't have to open the case to adjust lighting if i want.

Also I learned the value of patience in this process. Installing windows from a USB drive doesn't work unless you plug the USB Directly into the MOBO. Don't Ask me or the hour and a half i wasted how i know.

This was my first build in over 10 years and i am thoroughly happy with how it came out. Thanks for checking it out!

    RX580 Random crash

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:31 AM PST

So I recentley purchased a RX580 from XFX and from the moment I first booted with it I had issues. At boot the fan go all out and then stop once your in windows. Here is were the real problem starts, randomley and mostley while launching games a red checkboard apears over the screen and then connection to the monitor goes.

    Things I have already tried:

    • Underclocking
    • Older Drivers
    • Wiped Windows (Not clean installed)
    • Powerslider to 50%
    • Motherboard Bios Update

    Specs:

    • Mobo: Msi a320m
    • CPU: R3 2200g
    • GPU: XFX GTS RX580 XXX
    • RAM: Hyper X Fury 8GB @3000mHz
    • PSU: Raidmax xt Series 500w ( I'm pretty sure it's not the issue because it crashes even when there is minimal power being drawn

    Thanks in advance

What Do I Need To Know About Fans?

    1080 ti vs RTX 2070?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:53 PM PST

I am in need of a graphics card and i am deciding between a RTX 2070 and 1080 ti. I plan on playing arma 3 and BF5 and eventually some VR at 1440p. My monitor has G sync and i have a i7 8700k. I can get a used 1080 ti for about 550 vs a brand new 2070 for 600. I have no problem paying the 600 for the 2070 but i want to know what is honestly the better choice here?

Thoughts on bringing the cost of PC from $1400 to $1000 or under?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:53 PM PST

    Hello,

So I am currently trying to build a PC for streaming for under $1000, however what I want seems to be a bit more expensive. If anyone has any ideas on how I should go about reducing the cost of this build please reply to this thread.
When I do game, I will be gaming at 1440p, 4K on some light games hopefully. I will be playing Fortnite, Subnautica, Battlefield V, Black Ops IV, mostly FPS and adventure games so etc. On stream, I will NOT be playing PC, I also play PS4 a lot and will only be streaming on PlayStation therefore. Thanks,

"Hot air rises" is an overused phrase on this sub.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:28 PM PST

I see a lot of people insistent that airflow NEEDS to point up and out of the case, and that intake from the top of a case is always bad idea. When it comes to directing airflow inside a case, many cases are unique. Adequate airflow will pretty much outweigh the concept of "hot air rises" inside a case. That principle will have a much more profound effect when deciding between placing a pc on the floor or on your desk than it will when considering fan direction.

There may be other reasons why airflow towards the back and up is often a good idea for most cases, but air goes where it is pushed when inside a box that small, packed with fans.

Is it worth upgrading to Asus Strix 2080 from my Zotac 1080 with G12 and AIO for $150?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 12:40 PM PST

I found a local selling a lightly used 2080 Strix for $550 because they ended up going with 2080 ti instead. I can sell my Zotac 1080 amp for $400 with Kraken G12 and Evga CLC 120 CL11.

Is this upgrade worth $150? I'm thinking yes because I recently got a 1440p 144hz monitor and I play a lot of skyrim VR on Oculus. I just need some confirmation before I try to convince my wife that this is the smart thing for me to do.

8.1GB Ram hardware reserved, have 16gb

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:18 PM PST

Recently I had installed my CPU (ryzen 2600) and after I installed it my ram started showing that I had 8.1GB reserved. I checked in my bios for my XMP profile to see if it was on. It wasn't, so I set my speeds to 3200mhz and exited the bios. My PC then shut down almost instantly, then turned on and off three times before coming back on with the ram still at 2133mhz. I changed ram slots and checked each individual RAM dimm and they all booted by themselves with the full 8GB being shown.

However I came across this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/7h957e/how_i_resolved_ryzens_only_half_memory_available/) .

I had ripjaws V so I made a guess it was the ram and replaced it.

I installed my new corsair vengeance ram today and the same issue is happening. Ive already tried reseating everything, windows fixes (memory limit etc.) , updating bios, updating gpu drivers, and even reinstalling and resetting windows. The issue still persists regardless.

2060 vs 2070 vs 2080, which one to buy?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:41 PM PST

    Hey all.

Ok, so I am stuck between these cards and my brain is mush from looking at them.

So basically, I want to play titles like Anthem, etc at 1080p/1440p at 60fps on Ultra.

I plan to get an i7-8700K and 16GB RAM so that is taken care of.

But the video card, dang! I don't want to spend much more than $700 on the card. And if I can get away with these requirements for cheaper, that's great. It's an investment though and I don't wanna screw it up. What has your experience been with these cards?

Brand New Build, Everything plugged in and working except CPU COOLER and RAM.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:13 PM PST

Just built a new build (specs below) and it's booting up and running as it should except for two things.

    1) The Wraith Cooler that came with my Ryzen 2700x is connected to the CPU FAN and RGB Headers on my ASUS Crosshair VII X470 MOBO and it lights up when powering up the system but it doesn't sound and I get a BIOS notice reading "CPU FAN ERROR, properly connect CPU FAN and/or disable fan settings in BIOS". I've double checked the connections and it is all good. I'm currently trying to get another cooler to test if the issue is the Wraith Cooler or the motherboard.

    2) My motherboard is reading the Q-Code 24 which has to deal with RAM but the BIOS is recognizing my G.SKILL SNIPER 2x16GB 3200mhz, although it's only at 2133mhz instead of the full 3200mhz. Not sure if this is a big issue or I can just leave it.

I have submitted tickets to both AMD and ASUS regarding this issue but I thought I'd reach out here as well and see if any of yall have any advice to share. Thanks in advance!

    Building a gaming PC

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:00 PM PST

Hey all, I was planning on building a gaming PC this summer, but I have never built a PC before. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as what component parts I should invest more money into, or recommendations for specific components to buy? I play games like LoL, FPS's, and would want to play more single player games like god of war.

Will this setup work as an upgradable budget gaming pc?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:26 PM PST

    https://www.pcpartpicker.com/list/TVbYGG

PSU, case, and CPU cooler are subject to change. I'll also have to add fans.

I was going to include a GT 1030 graphics card, because reviews showed decent frame rates on the games that I wanted to play. Then I found that the Vega 8 integrated graphics in the AMD 2200G is apparently almost as good? So I took it off the list.

So, how is my APU, mobo and RAM combo? What would you change?

And regarding upgradability, what's the most powerful GPU that the Ryzen 3 2200G will pair well with?

I may not build this for 6 months. Anything coming up that I should know?

Many thanks! I apologise if I left anything out.

Should I keep my current i7 4770 and upgrade everything else?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:57 PM PST

I finally have a little more money now and I would like to upgrade my graphics card, HDD into a SSD and potentially get a close-circuit CPU water cooler (h55 most likely).

These are the parts I'm thinking of upgrading to (and from):

    GTX 760 ----> 1060

    HDD ----> Samsung 860 SSD Pro, 256gb

    • CPU closed circuit water cooler

I've had this i7 4770 for about 5 years now and I'm not sure whether or not I should use it or just upgrade?

    looking for a cpu cooler

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:53 PM PST

I recently finished my new build last week! Here are it's parts https://pcpartpicker.com/list/

I've been playing Anthem the past few days and have noticed that my CPU and GPU temps go up to 70C. The GPU I'm less worried about as I read that GPUs can go up to higher maximums and it usually maxes out at 70 degrees anyways under full load. But the CPU ranges from 70-76C when playing Anthem (it's 60-70C for other games) and I read that that's "fine" too but I personally just prefer them to be on the lower end of "safe" temperatures.

I'm currently looking at this cooler https://www.microcenter.com/product/503854/hydro-h60-120mm-white-led-water-cooling-kit since I've seen the name floating around here and r/buildapcforme. But my build is looking a bit dark inside right now so I want a bit more RGB LED on the cooler if possible. Are there any suggestions for coolers similar to this (where I don't need to install to the front panel and just replace my back fan) whether it be water/air cooling, as long as it's around this price range too. Thanks!
