Posted: 06 Feb 2019 06:12 AM PST Hey guys, I'm upgrading my rig right now (2200g, 8gb 3200mhz ram) and I have the option to upgrade with the same 2x4gb kit or to upgrade with the same kit but in 2x8gb configuration for ~$10 more (I'm not from the US, 2x4gb kit costs approx. 90$, so this is a great deal) Do you guys think it's worth it to buy the 2x8 gb kit and have 24gb of RAM for daily usage and gaming? My Experience with Samsung SSD Warranty in Canada Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:17 PM PST Edit: TLDR: You can get your Samsung SSD serviced under warranty by total tech solutions. I know that much has been made (on this subreddit and elsewhere) of Samsung's shady practices when it comes to handling warranty claims on their SSDs sold in Canada. So, naturally, when my 500GB 960 Evo boot drive got bricked due to circumstances that I won't go into, I was pretty dismayed. Expecting the worst and not wanting to deal with a long down time, I bought a replacement drive and then tried to figure out if I could get it repaired/replaced. The drive was still well within warranty, so the first thing I did was contact Samsung. They told me to take it to the place where I bought it (Canada Computers) and have them ship it out for repair. I was skeptical, so they opened a support ticket for me and a couple days later I got a form letter from Samsung Electronics Canada. I called Canada Computers who said that they do in fact send out Samsung products for warranty but that it can be a black hole and I likely wouldn't get anything back for a couple months, if at all. Then I remembered the name Total Tech Solutions being floated around on Reddit and other forums so I sent them an email. They're in New Jersey and while it doesn't seem to be advertised anywhere, they handle repairs for Samsung memory products. They opened a ticket and requested information from me, which I provided, after which they sent me an RMA number. I shipped the drive to them via UPS and within 2 days of them receiving it they shipped out a return package which ended up containing a new, factory-sealed replacement drive. Maybe if I had gone through the retailer the drive would have been sent to the same place with the same result. Who knows. After all, the one major downside was I had to pay to ship the drive to the US. Nonetheless, the whole thing was relatively painless and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it turned out. One last caveat: I bought the drive at Canada Computers, which I believe is one of Samsung's recognized Canadian retailers. I have no idea if they would accept proof of purchase from a retailer like Amazon, so YMMV. I know this is long, so sorry about that. I figured there might be a few people here who would be interested to know that it is possible to get warranty support for Samsung SSDs in Canada! Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:49 PM PST So I just built a brand new PC around 2 weeks ago and last night I was pulling the CPU fan out to rotate it, since the amd logo was upside down (I'm OCD don't judge me) and when I did it was stuck to the CPU so I tried pulling harder but that only lead to thermal paste being dragged to the side and off of the CPU. Push comes to shove and I somehow get thermal paste in the CPU socket (AM4) and on the CPU pins. I cleaned it with alcohol and a clean toothbrush as well as possible and put it back in to try it but it didn't post. Today I pulled it out to see if maybe the CPU wasn't in right but it just came out of the socket it's self, which was locked down. I don't see any bent pins and all look like they're there. I put it back in and booted it up but it froze and I had to shut it off, but now it's not powering on at all. It's the CPU for sure because that's the only thing I messed with and the power supply is brand new. I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to building PC's (ive watched thousands of videos on PC building though) so any help would be appreciated [link] [comments]
Getting ready for Division 2 (and work I suppose) Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:45 PM PST Here we go boys, build will commence tonight after the kid goes to bed. Any tips on any if these parts would be much appreciated, otherwise will carry on as usual. [link] [comments]
Is the 32Gb of RAM upgrade worth for a new PC with already 16Gb of RAM? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:57 AM PST I built a PC 2 months ago, the computer is really good and to be clear here I'm not having any issues at all with RAM or any other component. The thing is that I'm kinda greedy. I'd like to get 2 extra RAM sticks for my build. Will it be a waste of money if I do upgrade the RAM? Money is not really an issue and the performance I've been getting doese feel like I'd probably be wasting the money. That's the only concern I have before purchasing the extra RAM... Is it worth it? I use the PC mainly for gaming but I do like to keep everything opened in the background (usually a lot of stuff). I'm also planning to start streaming soon and I'd probably use it for design/programming purpouses too although this won't be a thing for a while (or I don't think so since for now, the laptop I got from my job and the one I got for the grade are enough). RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4 3200 PC4-25600 16GB 2x8GB CL16 - 145€ [link] [comments]
Moving SSD and HDD to new build. Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:37 AM PST So I just bought a 750w PSU and a RTX 2060 and will be installing them sometime this weekend. In about 6 months to a year I plan to buy a new motherboard, cpu and ram to create a new build with the previous mentioned PSU and GPU. My question is when this new build is complete will I be able to migrate my drives over and use them or will I need to completely reformat them and reinstall W10? If the latter would it only need to be my SSD boot drive or would all drives need to be wiped clean? [link] [comments]
Can my M.2 SSD get fried by being too close to the GPU? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 06:14 AM PST This is my mobo showing the proximity between the M.2 drive (hidden under the strix heatsink) and the GPU. While stressing the system, the backplate of the GPU gets too hot to touch for even 2 seconds. GPU temps are fine though and the system is well ventilated. I removed the M.2 sticker before attaching the ASUS heatsink. It never feels as hot as the GPU backplate but I have no way to check the actual M.2 drive temps. Interestingly, a few weeks ago my m.2 Samsung EVO 860 died out of the blue and I just installed the replacement. Any chance it happened due to overheating? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:36 AM PST Hi all! I need advice for a good CPU, RAM and motherboard to go with my new GPU the Vega 64. I know literally nothing about CPU's and have in the past just bought bundles off scan to avoid the headache. But now I want to upgrade to get the most out of my in coming vega 64 (upgrade from 660ti). I currently have a i5-3570k overclocked to 4.2. It still works great but I'm thinking of the future and also want to sell it while it still works well. I have a budget of 300-350, but it can stretch if it's worth it. All the help and advice will be really appreciated! [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:47 PM PST I'm pretty new to building PC and I bought a 1070 from newegg and I found out later that the rtx 2060 was better and around the same price. Per newegg's policy I can return the 1070 since I haven't opened it yet. The 1070 I bought was the zotac gtx 1070 mini for $299. The rtx 2060 is about $350. Do you guys think it's worth the trouble of doing so? Is the zotac gtx 1070 mini good and is it worth the extra $50 for the rtx 2060? Why aren't modular fans a thing? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:37 PM PST So, So I was looking at my computer the other day thinking what a pain it would be to have to replace one of my fans, since all my wires are zip-tied together and routed nicely. Then I was thinking... ...why aren't modular fans a thing? I mean you have the the plug that goes into the fan header, why not just have another plug on the other side that plugs into the fan? Imagine if you could just buy a new fan, unplug the old one, plug in the new one without moving a bunch of wires, re-routing cables, etc. So, why? Why I couldn’t feel the difference between 60hz and 144hz! Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:16 PM PST If anyone was struggling like I was trying to figure out why I wasn't feeling a difference in FPS you have to go to settings-> System-> Advanced Display Settings-> Display adapter properties (Under Color Space)-> Monitor-> Screen Refresh Rate to 144 Hertz. That's all you gotta do and now you'll feel the difference instantly in a game! [link] [comments]
I cant fit my graphics card in my motherboard. Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:36 PM PST First off I should tell you what im working with this is my board and graphics card: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FKTZC4M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MLTTDXS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 My GTX 970 fits in but this seems to be too large. I did the dumb (and the CPU hisses at me?) Posted: 05 Feb 2019 11:53 PM PST This is a little humiliating, being an IT professional (web developer, but still), but I think I might have messed up my PC. Please don't hurt my feelings too much. I've had a new CPU cooler for 6 months after my last one died. My PC was running hot, so I took off the CPU cooler to check the thermal paste. Lo and behold, I absentmindedly hadn't peeled off the sticker from the bottom. I peeled that off, used thermal paste cleaner and thermal surface purifier on the CPU, and reapplied Arctic Silver paste. I put it all back together... and the debug lights on the motherboard showed a CPU fault. I panicked and examined everything thoroughly, and it turns out that I messed up twice when I installed the cooler – the cooler has plastic caps to prevent the metal destroying the motherboard... and I hadn't used them. So the motherboard is scraped and short circuited. Great. I took off the cooler, put the caps on, and put it all back together, and now the computer boots fine, but the temperature is fluctuating wildly between 30C and 60C, and the CPU is making a frequent loud hissing/warbling sound. What have I done? 😑 My specs, in case it helps:
UPDATE: I'm leaning towards the problem being motherboard VRMs, so I'm going to try another motherboard. This will take a while, haha! [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:44 PM PST My buddy is willing to sell me his 970 for 80$. I currently have a 770. What kind of performance boost would I see out of this upgrade? Also I have a amd fx 8350, will this cause any bottleneck? [link] [comments]
Got an upgraded budget to build a pc for a friend Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:52 PM PST Hi all, I convinced my friend to up his budget a bit to get an rx 580 in his rig, so this is what I've got for him now. Anything you guys would recommend? I'll mention where I made the changes from a $600 build to the new $800 build. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
I upgraded the MSI RX 570 to a sapphire rx 580 I switched the asus rog strix b450-f for the msi x470 for the better thermals and higher grade chipset I also switched out the 7200 rpm 2tb seagate drive for the 5400 rpm wd blue 2tb due to a lot of reviews on the seagate saying they received used drives and the failure rates for higher rpm drives is higher with not enough of a speed increase. Any thoughts before I tell him to start ordering parts? [link] [comments]
Good text guides on how to build a pc? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:19 PM PST I have all the components, do y'all know of any good text based guides (besides the guides in the wiki)? [link] [comments]
Building Budget Desktop. Need a second look at parts list. Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:16 PM PST I am planning to build my own gaming desktop because my current one can't do what I want it to. I made this part list, https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gsncLJ, and I just wanted some second opinions. I already manually checked, not just using partpicker because I know it isn't always right, and everything is compatible. If anyone has some advice I'd greatly appreciate it and the budget has to stay around $800 - $850 the lower the better. Update: Using this motherboard and CPU instead of that which is on the list, everything else is the same. https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3885905&Description=core%20i7 [link] [comments]
Is this the best Motherboard for the money? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 06:12 AM PST I've been saving up to replace some old (OLLLDDD) parts on my builds and the first to go is my motherboard. Ya'll were great with your recommendations a few months back but i just wanted to make sure the MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard is still my best bet. Having a hard time running apex legends when I should be running it fine. Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:51 PM PST Just recently did I upgrade my pc to a ryzen 5 2600 and a 1070ti. Im getting strange lag Apex legends, when everyone is saying that they're having no issues running it! I've made sure that my monitors are plugged in correctly, but even then i still need to play on the lowest settings. What could be the issue? PC Noob! Need advice on my first upgrade! Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:47 PM PST Hey guys! Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. Just bought this setup and wanted to know what you would upgrade first to improve performance. I mostly game so fps is crucial. I've also added a Samsung Evo 1tb SSD since this info was put together. Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:48 AM PST PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
This is my part list, and I plan to use 2 1080p 144hz monitors - however my friend told me that I'd be bottlenecking and that it's bad? From my understanding my Monitors wouldn't let the GPU use it's full potential - but it'd still perform the best that those monitors can go up to? Meaning it wouldn't be bad by any means? The reason I went for a RTX 2060 instead of a GTX 1060 or 1070 is because the RTX is only £30 dearer than the 1070 and I thought for the extra money I might as well get the slightly better but much newer GPU. Would it be better if I just downgraded the GPU to an ASUS GTX 1060 Dual or 1070 Dual? I'd like to be able to play all types of games on High+ graphics without lagging or anything like that whilst streaming at the same time. I thought if I got the RTX 2060 it wouldn't impact my game play at all, my monitors would be the best they could be, and my GPU would pass with flying colours, and down the line I could upgrade to a 1440p monitor which would be able to then utilise the full potential of the RTX 2060? However my friend is making it sound like if I get the RTX 2060 it'll just spell catastrophe for my rig - is this true? Because I somewhat don't believe it. *Fun fact: He's always had a better PC set up than I have (currently have a Lenovo C20). The rig that I'm planning to build is quite a bit more powerful than his - is it just his jealousy and his attempt to stop me from surpassing his, by trying to put me off the better quality parts? He seems against my rig idea, hating on the Ryzen 7 2700X and the RGB aspect of it (which his doesn't have). [link] [comments]
Is a laptop 1060 powerful enough to drive 2 1440p monitors? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 08:11 AM PST I am lucky enough to come into possession of two ASUS VZ27AQ 27 monitors for the price of one. I currently have one used in conjunction with my laptop screen, but was wondering if using both of them would be too demanding for my laptop 1060? [link] [comments] |
