Looking for a decent gaming laptop NZ

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:24 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking at about $1000NZD can possibly stretch by a couple hundred

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. It'll mostly stay on a charger anyhow, I want something that wont slow down anytime soon

How important is weight and thinness to you? N/A

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The standard 15.6 is fine

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Realistically only Runescape

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As above

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? backlit keyboard would be cool but not required.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have always bought second-hand laptops that tend to get slow not long after. I have a desktop so it won't be my primary computer but I do want it to last.

I need a laptop with good thermals, i5-8300h or higher, decent battery life, and a GTX 1050TI or higher.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:57 PM PST

My budget is about 800-850, which I would say is pretty realistic in this area. However, I don't want a laptop that thermal throttles. Also, (I DONT WANT THE 7567). Thank you!

[800 euros/900 usd] Clean look laptop(not aggressive angles and red/rgb lights)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:02 AM PST

Hey there,Please, do not recommend to get Acer laptops. I do not trust their mid-low budget plastic models. Dell 7557 is not an option also, i`m not in USA, so it`s hard to get it on an affordable price.Going to order laptop from https://www.computeruniverse.net/en/

Total budget and country of purchase:

Russia; 800 euros or 900 usd

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good specifications(cooling:performance), battery life around 4-5 hours of typing with spotify and several browser tabs or movies.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I am not going to take it out often, but still wanna it weigh under 3 kgs(without HDD).

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Gonna use both windows and linux, but i can install it by myself, so do not really care.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-15,6 would be just fine

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light editing in photoshop, sony vegas, running coding IDEs and some light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I checked benchmarks and would like to get one of the following GPUs: mx150, gtx 1050, gtx 1050 ti. Key factor in making choice between these three gpus would be build quality and thermals. If i have to choose between great MX150 laptop and a gtx 1050ti throttling and creaking plastic machine, i`d go for the first one.

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good backlit keyboard(customisable or white/blue), because i will type a lot, reliable build quality and at least 256 SSD(or no ssd at all, so i can put my own).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I wanna get a clean look laptop(again NOT Acer) with good build quality, nice thermals(going to undervolt and repaste it), 8GB of Ram, upgradeable to 16. Easy access inside would be great too, because i am not an expert in disassembling laptops.

Talking about list of preferred GPUs - i would be absolutely fine even with MX150, if laptop meets my other requirments.

Best budget laptop that runs AutoCAD?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:04 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I would say under $1000, but ideally I would like it to be under $800. [USA]

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm looking for a decent to good battery life and the best specifications possible under my budget.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Couldn't care less about those two.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm not sure about this one, does the screen size make any difference when it comes to running AutoCAD? If so, the size most suitable for AutoCAD.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. AutoCAD and any other programs that a Civil Engineering student may use in the future.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Now that I think about it, some gaming doesn't sound too bad. I guess any modern-ish games on mid-high settings at 60fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't really care about this one either.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm not very knowledgeable on this topic (PC's and laptops), so I'm hoping for you guys to help me out since I'm kinda desperate now.

    Latitude E7440 or X1 Carbon?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:44 AM PST

I'm looking for a laptop for web browsing, coding, document writing for uni (compsci) with solid build quality and good battery, but i'm stuck on the details. I'm tossing up between the Dell Latitude E7440 and the X1 Carbon.

I'd like to discern the differences between these laptops or find the X1's screen type (touch, FHD or QHD). Which has better battery life, keyboard, etc? Is the function display bar on the X1 worth it? I'm not even sure of the specifics of the X1 as the description on Newegg is limited.

-Running Linux if anyone could suggest one for further compatibility

I don't mind other laptop recommendations, but i'm not interested in anything with <8gb ram, 1366x768, heavy or bulky, more than ~800AUS or not an SSD.

    Cheers

Looking for a ~$2500AUD laptop with thin bezels and a GPU good for some medium gaming!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 11:31 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

Australia; Maximum $2500 but could stretch a little

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life is a priority.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness is important but the weight is not, I just don't want a typical bulky gaming computer.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I would be running Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects and some games listed below.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?\

Settings all high at 1080p (minimum fps requirements)

    PUBG: 24 - 30fps

    Forza 4: 24 - 30fps

    Csgo: 60fps

    Rust: 24 - 30fps

    GTA V: 24 - 30fps

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like the laptop to come with a Thunderbolt 3 port if the GPU is less than a 1050Ti so I can plug in an external GPU. Thin bezels are also very important (I'm sorry but I can't stand the large bezels of most gaming laptops). Reliable build quality would also be great too.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have looked at the Huwaei Matebook x pro but its a bit hard to obtain in Australia and the ASUS Zenbook s but it does not have Thunderbolt 3 compatibility. Thanks in advance!

Would love some more opinions. No real budget, Canada.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 11:05 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Canada - $4000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs first, battery second, 2 in 1 third.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't want a brick. Will be used primarily while travelling.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows. Have a MacBook pro, do not like MacOS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primarily Photoshop, illustrator, and InDesign. Occasionally premiere and Aftereffects. Web dev as well. Would be interested in music production options, Kontakt + Ableton 10. I like to game, but it's not a requirement for the laptop, I have a desktop. Games could be LOL or smaller steam platformers.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    League of Legends.

I love the Surface Book 2, Lenovo X1 Extreme and the new Razer Blade. I get that the battery in the blade is going to be poor, and the Surface Book has questionable build quality. Would love something that could last a few years. Gaming is a nice feature, but don't want a gaudy design. Aero 15 is a possibility too.

Any other suggestions would be great. Or arguments for any of my 3/4 choices.

    I need confirmation!!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:59 PM PST

So I've been doing a lot of searching around and i believe that I've found a laptop that gives a lot of bang for the buck. The Asus ROG GU501GM has an intel i7-8750h, 16GB DDR4, GTX 1060 6GB, it's got a thunderbolt port, a 128Gb SATA SSD, 1 TB HDD. I'm pretty sure it has a 120 Hz screen with FHD. It's currently offered for $1299.99 at Best Buy and when i bump up the ram or storage or add a discrete GPU in other laptops to match this laptop, nothing compares to the price of the Asus ROG GU501GM.

What i would like to know is if anyone has heard of any serious problems with this laptop? It seems too good of a deal for it to have no problems. Maybe I'm just pessimistic but i would like to know of any outstanding problems with this device.

I plan on making some games in Unity, playing black ops 3 zombies, fortnite, and I'm a computer science student so it would be nice to be able to keep the same laptop for at least the next 3-4 years.

    Lenovo Y740 2080MQ for $2503.44 (original $2539.99, then $254 off, then big taxes) or Sager NP9176 2070 MXM for $2449 or Alienware Area-51m 144hz G-Sync for $2549?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:43 PM PST

My budget is no more than the Alienware. Prefer to spend a little less, but I suppose I would only save $100 with the Sager.

    relevant specs:

    Y740 Area-51m NP9176
2080 Max-Q 2070 mobile near desktop performance 2070 MXM (not sure how compares to regular mobility 2070)
    i7-8750h i7-9700k i7-9700k
    512GB SSD 1000GB (+8) SSHD 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD

I am very confused by the Area-51m specs as $2549 is normally the starting price, which includes crappy specs other than the RTX 2070, but among other upgrades this one has 144hz FHD G-Sync. It costs $3000 on the Alienware website, which is still an ok price. Though you would have to add $200 tax to that.

I prefer the lighting of the Y740 and the general build but I don't actually care how heavy my laptop is as it will be used like a desktop. The NP9176 should be upgradable with the MXM, but I don't know about this. The Area-51m is also made to be upgradable. I am wondering if 2080MQ with 8750h or 2070 with 9700k performs better. notebookcheck.com showed that these combinations are pretty much on par with each other. I think the Area-51m appears to be the best deal if it is legit.

Laptop for Uni work + YouTube/Netflix. Prioritising battery and screen!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:26 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max $1500 AUD. May stretch to $1800. Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery, then best specifications

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Rarely. DaVinci Resolve/Photoshop if anything, but not important to base laptop around this. That's why I'm not after i7 and dedicated GPU. That would raise price way too much.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good screen e.g. brightness, colour, etc. 1920x1080 at least. i5 or greater 6gb+ RAM

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have narrowed it to these 5 choices, though I welcome more:

    • Acer Aspire E 15 i5
    • Surface 2 (126GB)
    • TravelMate P2510
    • ThinkPad T480
    • Surface 2

Here's a writeup I made of each of these laptops pros and cons: https://imgur.com/a/VdrGrUQ

[USA] [Under $1000] 13-14 inch laptop for schoolwork and travel

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:43 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    USA; Under $1000

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life is essential, but I don't want any unnecessary specification sacrifices. I do not want a 2 in 1 form factor.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness is very important. I would like something that I can easily lug around in my backpack (for reference, I'm a puny 5'3" woman).

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 to 14 inches. Nothing too small, nothing too big.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Would like the capability of running Solidworks. Light gaming, but I imagine nothing that would require more than Solidworks would.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and reliable build quality would be appreciated. I would like the insides to last at least 4-5 years before needing to upgrade. Touch screen would be a nice bonus, but it's not necessary. Random note that I really liked the Trackpoint on Thinkpads, but I'm not sure if a Thinkpad would be suitable for my purposes.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Thanks in advance!

[USA] ~$400.00 USD Browsing/Notes/Higher build quality

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:22 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    USA, around $400, flexible

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important, light and thin strongly preferred

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Chrome OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13" or less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is a must

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop is an Acer Aspire E15, and while the specifications were great for the price, the build quality is sorely lacking. Looking for an inverse situation here, specifications can be lack luster (so long as they perform the title functions). I'm partial to the Chromebooks, however, I have no idea which one would be the best purchase. Additionally, while I'm sure this is a tall order, are there any laptops similar to the Dell XPS in terms of build quality and design, obviously sans the hardware and Touchscreen of the XPS?

Sanity Check: Helios 300 for Fusion 360 and future?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:03 PM PST

I'm in the market for a new laptop. The Acer Predator Helios 300 from Amazon keeps bubbling up to the top of my list, but I'd like to get an internet stranger opinion on the state of things before I pull the trigger. Will primarily support my Fusion360/Inkscape habit for cosplay purposes.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    USA- Max $1500

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specs and durable. I'd prefer quiet, but I'm probably not going to tax the system that much except for renderings and I'll deal then.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

I'll keep it in my lap on the couch, but don't mind if it has some heft if that helps cooling and performance

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15.6 seems to be the sweet spot for me

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Fusion360, Inkscape, possibly some Meshmixer and other things related to 3D printing

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Last game I played regularly on PC was Diablo III when it came out. If this thing can run things, that's great, but it's not my priority.

I've been looking at laptops since Thanksgiving and missed the closeouts on Lenovo Legions at my local Costco. The Helios seems to be what I'm going for, but Reddit has become my catch-all for things like this.

Need suggestions for a video editing laptop as a film production student $2000-2200 budget

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:03 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm attending a film production program in September and I'm looking for a laptop that is:

    - Highly portable (but no less than 13'')

    - Has 16 RAM and 512GB SSD

    - Has a "mature" and "clean" aesthetic (for example, I hate the way MSI chunky laptops look)

    - Under $2200 CAD

    - Good battery life (6+ hours)

    Any suggestions would be great!

14-16" CANADA max $2000 able to run lots of programs at the same time

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:50 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care about 2 in 1, good battery life would be nice but not the most important factor, good specs are more important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, but not a deal breaker.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"-16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing fancy like this. Not much of a gamer at all.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? numeric keypad important, SSD, thunderbolt port or at least usb-c port, and also need usb-a port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hoping for 8 GB or more RAM. Sick of my current computer not able to handle having lots of applications open. Also have a 500 GB HDD currently and don't want to have a smaller hard drive with a new computer, even if it's SSD.

Often I'm running a couple of microsoft word docs at the same time, multiple excel spreadsheets, several firefox or chrome tabs open, a TI Nspire emulator program, some other graphing tools like geogebra or geometer's sketchpad, probably a few other things too, all in front of a classroom so I don't want the computer slowing me down - the students do a good enough job of that! Hoping for i7 chip as a result, as well as min 8 GB of RAM and SSD PCIe NVMe (if possible within budget or close to budget)
