Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:42 AM PST Like I am picturing a Commad prompt. I type in "chrome" and a chrome window opens with my command line still in the background. Or do i need to run enter a full GUI mode. I guess I could just full screen a window. None of these options are bad. I am jut curious what is available for my preferred usage case here? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Training Wheels: An online shell to learn bash Posted: 12 Feb 2019 05:00 PM PST Hi /r/LinuxForNoobs. My buddy wrote this tool called training wheels to help teach people bash and linux fundamentals so i am shamelessly sharing it. It covers basic interaction, man pages, absolute and relative paths, special places in the file system, filters, pipes, and user control! Feel free to try it out and hopefully it helps someone. Its currently hosted on our website @ https://alliance.errantsecurity.com/training_wheels and you can use it in browser. No cost but you do have to create an account. There are also some capture the flag challenges and a leader board to check out as well. :) [link] [comments] |
Getting to grips with the terminal Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:15 AM PST As a long time windows user I have been using a handful of raspberry pis with verious software on them for a few years now. I've recently been thinking about installing Linux on an old machine to get some experience with it. My main question is how do you get your head around the terminal? From what iv seen it's used for pretty much everything? So are you meant to remember all the commands for everything or is it just a case of following instructions? Installing a program on Windows it's obviously incredibly simple. [link] [comments] |
Can I install Kubuntu on an SSD in one computer, and use Kubuntu on that SSD in another computer? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:01 AM PST My old laptop's hard drive was failing, so I got an SSD to replace the old HDD. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't recognize any boot media, so I cannot install any OS onto the SSD from the laptop. But if I were to put the SSD into my desktop and install from there, could I move the SSD into my laptop with no problems? Or would I have to find drivers for the laptop? [link] [comments] |
Moving from mac to Linux world(open source world) any remorse?? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:47 AM PST I am a college student, freshman, thinking to major in CS. For some reason that i "decided" to switch to Linux world/ open source software from Mac.( I know kind of "stupid move" why bought Apple/Mac in the first place ? Some people likely to ask, it was a gift.) More specifically, i have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) with touch bar. Not asking what Linux distro would you recommend since not OS is perfect. Just wondering if we can getting by using Linux/open source applications not effecting our daily productivity? (if you consider you can count on Mac os to get thing done.). I use adobe acrobat heavily. any good alternative in Linux world? not using acrobat to write, but to annotated, commented on pdf file, highlighting, arrow pointing, adding note between lines already warned by https://github.com/Dunedan/mbp-2016-linux Linux Driver issue. Help: Can't get xrandr to output laptop screen to TV screen through HDMI correctly Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:57 AM PST Lap OS: Debian 9 Stretch; Maximum Resolution: 1366 x 768 TV: 1920 x 1080 I use the GUI version of xrandr which is arandr to try to set this up but for some reasons the TV won't mirror the laptop screen. How do I solve this? My TV doesn't support my laptop resolution if that info is helpful. Another important thing is that when I make my laptop screen not active in arandr then TV then can show the laptop screen at full screen but the laptop screen now turns pitch black which is not what I want. Reinstalled whole operating system, but the installation package system is still failing. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:33 AM PST OS: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS 64-bit Hardware:
Problem: I recently moved. Before being packed up, this pc worked fine. When I set it back up it encountered some problems. I tried shutting it down only to make the issue worse. Eventually, I fixed some of the errors but the system was so broken that the pc wouldn't let me load a backup. I wiped the drive and reinstalled from a cd. It appears the package system is still somewhat broken despite this. I've tried to install updates multiple times without success. I went to the terminal and forced an install with sudo apt-get install -f. That helped but the package system still fails when updating most of the time. What do I do? Thank you! TL;DR: Wiped system and reinstalled Ubuntu but package install system seems permanently broken. Help. [link] [comments] |

Grub update configuration messing up Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:18 AM PST I ran an update on Ubuntu 18 and it didn't complete, after restarting it and running "dpkg --configure -a" the configuration of tasks has started but freezes with grub:
dpkg will sit there, HD isn't being tasked, processor usage is normal, system works fine, but that is stuck. While that is stuck updates and installs aren't working. Any idea how to unfreeze that and get grub to complete it's configuration? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu/Pop!_OS external monitor not working Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:11 AM PST I have bought a new VGA - HDMI adapter so that I can use my Thinkpad T460 with external monitor. It works in Windows without any additional setup. It however doesn't work on neither of the OSs I have tried. Pop!_OS is installed, Ubuntu was running from live USB. It used to work before with my friend's adapter. I am trying Pop!_OS now last few days and haven't used the adapter since. Should I try Ubuntu 18.04 instead of .10? Or completely different distro? Using HDMI cable to connect to my TV works flawlessly. [link] [comments] |
New laptop, a couple of questions Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:57 AM PST I just changed my portable setup and this is pretty much the first time I get my hands around a laptop with a stand-alone gpu module. It's a 1060. I used to run Ubuntu on my previous machine and I pretty much would like to keep using it as far as work goes. My questions:
Thanks for ideas and suggestions [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:48 AM PST I'm on Linux Mint and have Transmission Remote GUI installed. I tried to close the program, but it's being unresponsive. The only thing I know how to do in this situation is ps aux | grep program name and then kill the pid. But every time I run ps aux | grep transmission the pid changes and the terminal say there is no such process. How can I close this frozen program? Edit* it's called transgui, not transmission. Killed it. [link] [comments] |

How to get rid of LightDM fading to black after login? Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:08 AM PST Hi, I recently started using antergos, but the black screen period between LightDM and XFCE seems a bit long (I use an SSD). Previously I used Linux Mint with cinnamon and the boot time seems to have been shorter. Is there any way to make my DE load quicker and/or get rid of this fade to black after logging in? https://youtu.be/Ibj_JWBoqt4 [link] [comments] |
