Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:25 AM PST Hello, I was considering using Pop!_OS found here: https://system76.com/pop Now I get super concerned about privacy and it's the main reason why I stopped using windows. I have been unable to find the full source code for this distro, and on the website it says that they never send back any information. How can I be absolutely sure that this is a completely private and secure distro before I use it? P.S. I looked on their github. The full OS Source is not on there to my knowledge. Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:03 PM PST I managed to install Ubuntu onto a NVM SSD on AHCI mode. Alongside Win 10. Win 10 was pre-installed, has a boot loader in the UEFI, and in the UEFI there is nothing named Linux to begin with. This is the boot order in the UEFI: UEFI USB CD/DVD, UEFI USB Key, UEFI CD/DVD, UEFI Hard Disk: Windows Boot Manager, UEFI USB Hard Disk, UEFI USB Floppy and UEFI Network. First I created the Ubuntu CD. Then, I changed to AHCI. Then I went to the UEFI and changed to CD USB (where Linux install is) to the first to boot-order. Then I installed. I did use boot-repair but it's still not showing GRUB. Windows boots without problem in both AHCI and RAID, but even after using the tool it still doesn't show GRUB. Also, it's a MSI Infinte A. Windows is booting correctly with both AHCI and RAID. I had AHCI enabled when I installed Ubuntu, because when I tried with RAID , the installation program couldn't find the NVM SSD... The Boot-Repair program told me to check if there is any nvme0n1p1 in boot order and to type in this in the CMD on Windows: bcdedit /set -bootmgr- path /EFI/ubuntu/shimx64.efi [link] [comments] |
How to find out my chipset's name ? Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:49 AM PST I am running Ubuntu Budgie on an old laptop, the OS is able to connect with my WiFi router but is unable to connect to the the internet, even though my windows laptop and android phone can do both of those things. The solution I found online requires the name of the chipset and I don't know what a chipset is and how to find it. So I'm stuck. The WiFi chip was fried so I got it changed also . This is the solution I found ; https://www.maketecheasier.com/fix-wi-fi-not-working-ubuntu/ [link] [comments] |

I made my USB stick undetectable and unmountable with some terminal commands (lol) Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:22 AM PST So I just wanted to format it and found this tutorial to help out. Basically, first I used sudo fsck /dev/~usbName~, it showed some stuff about dirty bits to which I responded twice to do nothing. Then tried to proceed to sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/~usbName~, after which it didn't even ask for my password and also didn't display anything. ...So I immediately did the next command on the list, which was sudo mkfs.msdos -f 32 /dev/~usbName~, which also didn't ask for my password and didn't show any results. Maybe these last two commands were supposed to take a while to complete? Tutorial didn't mention anything like that though so I just kind of closed the terminal killing the process and now my USB doesn't show up in files or anywhere. Not really a big deal thankfully, but still I was wondering if it can be fixed somehow from here? And do you have an idea where did I go wrong w the "formatting"? How do I go about formatting a USB drive correctly next time? Thank u <3 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:07 AM PST I have eyesight problem, but while using Windows on my laptop I could get over it by using the scaling feature and turning it to 200%. But as my hardware is low end (HDD with the OS being the problem) Windows 10 being very demanding, I dual booted to Ubuntu to see if I could get better performance and it had better, but the UI scaling, being unable to create shortcuts on the desktop easily for files and folders reduced my productivity. So I need help. Will any body help? [link] [comments] |
Tried using Linux(Ubuntu) for the first time and it wasn't great Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:18 AM PST I've been wanting to try out Linux for some time now and about a week ago i decided to finally do it. After like a minute of searching i found out that Ubuntu is the most recommended for beginners, which i obviously am. Installation process was really easy and simple which i liked a lot (expected it to be much harder for some reason). But once i restarted my PC and booted into the system, things seemed a bit slow/laggy and choppy. Also there was a lot of screen tearing. So i installed nvidia's proprietary drivers(from ubuntu's 'software and updates') and hoped that it'll get better, long story short it did ,but not by much. Also i enabled screen composting or something like that, which made it even better but introduced an enormous amount of input lag,and even with it enabled videos either on Youtube or locally were stuttering like every 5 seconds or so. One more thing about this is that on KDE it didn't stutter every 5sec ,but it still lagged. Compared to Windows ,which i've been using my whole life, this just doesn't seem like a nice experience. Don't get me wrong i want to use Linux ,which is why i'm posting this here to get some help if possible. If anyone knows how to fix this issue of lag/tearing please do respond i'd really appreciate it. In case you need my specs: CPU: Intel i5 - 4690k -stock GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB RAM: Kingston 1x8GB 1600Mhz [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:52 PM PST I've been using Ubuntu for a while with KDE Desktop. It's working pretty good and I'm satisfied with options (like full disk encryption and stuff) but I still have privacy concerns. Is it really privacy-respecting? I asked so many people but nobody really gave me an answer. Is it? [link] [comments] |
Why aren't Bluetooth devices common with other OSes? Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:27 AM PST I'll need to re-pair my phone to transfer files anytime I boot up to another OS (or at least it's for Windows-Linux dual boot PC). Does it have something to do with different MAC addresses on each boot, or the BT name of my PC, or anything else? [link] [comments] |
[Fonts] looking for explanation and a all round solution Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:26 AM PST I have been messing around a bit with i3wm and polybar, mostly looking at other peeps dotfiles. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on it all but i am really struggling with fonts. What I am thinking is that all i need is a font that I want to use for general text (terminal and other) and then backup/fallback font/s for symbols. my issue when copying other peoples configs is I always seem to have missing symbols. this is sometimes due to not have a particular font installed. but after installing all mentioned fonts it still have issues. I think this is due to difference in syntax between arch (what most of the examples are in) and Ubuntu (that I am using). also I cannot seem to get any symbols to work in URXVT can someone break down the syntax on how to set up fonts in .Xresourses. How do I set a main font? how do backup fonts work? what is font-1 font-2 etc? [link] [comments] |

Problem with setting up my WLAN stick driver (Ubuntu MATE 18.04) Posted: 01 Feb 2019 06:00 AM PST Hello, I'm currently trying to set up a driver with "make". I've never done this before.I installed build-essential, linux-headers, make and updated & upgraded everything. There was a README file included and it said that the default config usually doesn't need to be changed and it should work as it is.I went into the directory containing the driver, typed in "make" and got the following error(i changed my name to "user" in this code block) Since I've never done this before i have no idea what this means. Do i need to change the file or do i need to download something else to make it work? I'm trying to setup Ubuntu MATE as my second OS and this stops my currently from doing so. Thanks for any help! Is there a GUI-based application that allows you to custom edit/create GNOME themes from scratch? Posted: 01 Feb 2019 11:37 AM PST I mean Tweaks can only do so much and I know the proper way to do it would be to go in and edit lines of CSS but say, I have downloaded a theme and like 90% of it but really want to change the color of a title bar or the style of an exit button...I feel there should be, if there isn't already, a relatively user-friendly program that lets you custom edit or create a theme piece-by-piece with a huge selection of windows decorations, buttons, etc or the ability to import your own. Does this exist because it sounds convenient and I'm a casual. [link] [comments] |

[Question] What is the name of the graphical installer for Gnome Desktop on Ubuntu 16.04? Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:04 AM PST So this might sound like a stupid question, but I've been Googling this for hours, and either my Google-Fu is weak, or Google legit doesn't understand what I'm after. What I'm doing and why I'm doing itI'm creating a custom remix distro of this Gnome-Ubuntu 16.04 distro, using PinGuy Builder. It's nothing too fancy. All I'm trying to do is have a Gnome-based Ubuntu 16.04 distro that has all the bloatware stripped out, and has all the software we use pre-installed right out of the box, as well as retain some GUI tweaks. Granted, yes, I could do this with a script and a vanilla Gnome Ubuntu 16.04 Installation, but this is something I've been wanting to try, and most of the people I work with aren't exactly *nix experts, and if possible, I'd rather them just have something that's working out of the box, as opposed to having them setup their own machines after the OS installation is finished, even if it's something that's as simple as running a script. However, if I can't get this work, that'll most likely be what I resort to. The Problem

No idea which distro is for me. Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:15 PM PST Hello world! I am a pretty newbie Linux user. I started off on Linux mint months ago and and pretty competent when it comes to using the command line. However, over the past months I have switched distros probably 10 times. I have tried kali, parrot, Bodhi, and peppermint to name a few. And I just can't seem to nail one that I want down. I just purchased a raspberry pi as-well, and I plan to use that to host all of my files and use my system to ssh into that. So if anyone has anything they could recommend, here is a list of what I would be looking for (in order of priority) Secure, maybe even too secure (eg. always connected to tor) Must be installed (no live cd) Debian based Programming friendly Elegant desktop (maybe looks like MacOS, though this is of the least priority for me. Function > looks) Also another question, is there any benefit to using a LiveCD Linux full time? I haven't seen the point in using them other than to test out the OS, or for a few time use such as tails. I appreciate any help and thank you for your time and knowledge!! [link] [comments] |
