Location no longer updates when screen is off/locked

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:03 PM PST

Hello! I've got an S9+ on Verizon that no longer updates location when the screen is locked. Specifically, when running mapmyfitness. This began less than five days ago, but I'm not sure exactly when.

I've got an Android v9 update, but that was before the issue started.

    What I've done:

    • Mapmyfitness support says to not use any battery optimization/saver features. I set it to "high performance." No luck.

    • Various internet searches told my to cycle location off and on, airplane mode off and on, and to shut the phone off. I've done all of these several times with no luck.

    • Another search said to clear location cache data. Could not find that on my phone - the directions definitely didn't apply to my phone.

    • "Google location accuracy" is on, and has always been.

    • The app does have permission to use location data. In fact it works fine as long as the screen is active, but that's definitely not a very viable solution for me.

    • I've tried using the smart lock feature, which turns off the screen, but doesn't activate security. I'm guessing this is largely the same as regular locking, but I couldn't think of anything else.

Again, apps that use location seem to work just fine with the screen on - it's only when it's locked that it becomes a problem. I feel silly asking for help with this, because it feels like something I'd be able to figure out. I've just had no luck searching.

    Thanks much!

Why do you prefer Android over iOS?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:46 PM PST

I am thinking of transition to Android, but I've been wondering some people prefer Android over iOS? Is the software just better in general? What makes Android superior?

Mysterious icon on notification bar keeps appearing for a few seconds every hour or so. Anyone recognize it?

[This is the image](https://i.imgur.com/DRPCgF1.png). I think it may be related to Google Maps location sharing but I am not 100% certain and am hoping to verify.

    Does anyone recognize this icon?

Any good roms for the HTC 10 Evo?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:25 PM PST

My HTC 10 Evo is currently suck on android nougat and I want to flash a rom on it to upgrade android to something more up to date. But I can't seem to find a custom rom for it that isn't nougat. It would be preferable if the rom was pre-rooted and had no google bloatware. HTC said they would push out an Oreo update for it but they still haven't and Pie is already here. The bootloader is already unlocked and the recovery is already TWRP. I am already quite versed in flashing roms as I have done it to multiple phones in the past so I don't a guide but a short description of the rom would be much appreciated.

Is there any way to lock the battery gauge to full or disable it altogether? (rooted)

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 05:13 AM PST

For reasons I won't get into in order to avoid a longer post than necessary, my phone runs from an external battery bank based on 18650 cells with its own charger, and it specifically cannot charge from the phone's built-in charging circuit (stock battery was LiHV 4.35V, external is LiIon 4.2V - if I charged it through the phone it'd get overcharged).

This hack works great and the phone lasts forever and a day even under heavy usage, but the battery bank's onboard charger screws up the battery gauge - the phone doesn't know that the battery is being charged, and will cheerfully report it as 1% charged even as the voltage goes up to 4.2V.

In and of itself this wouldn't bother me all that much as I can just run a battery voltage monitor and figure out how much capacity I have left from there (and I never really run out anyway), but some applications such as the flashlight think that the power is critical and refuse to work properly, or set themselves to annoying powersaving modes. I also get a blinking red LED which takes priority over the blinks I get from notifications, and occasional popups warning me that I need to charge NOW!!!!.

Annoyingly this behaviour resists reboots and the gauge can only be reset by physically unplugging the 18650 cells, plugging them back in and jolting the battery circuit back to life by briefly plugging in the USB lead (otherwise it won't work at all).

For these reasons I'd like to disable the gauge completely, or hack it to be locked to full.

I'm rooted and have experience with the terminal. I don't have XPosed installed now but I can install it if need be.

I went poking around into /sys/class/power_supply/battery, but everything in there seems to be dynamically altered by the battery's "fuel gauge" chip and I get access denied errors if I try to manually modify the files - even as root, which struck me as quite weird.

Any ideas? I tried Googling but all I get are useless articles about user-level "hacks" to improve battery life.

How does updating custom ROMs work?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:43 PM PST

I have a Huawei P9 which I was sad to see abandoned after only 2 years, so I'm looking into flashing a custom ROM to keep the device updated. Everyone recommends doing this if you want new updates, but the the P9 isn't on this list ( https://www.getdroidtips.com/devices-lineage-os-15-0-android-8-0-oreo/#List_of_Huawei_Devices_getting_Lineage_OS_150_Android_80_Oreo ) of supported phones for oreo-based lineage OS 15. What gives?

I thought a main reason why people used custom ROMs was to keep their device updated for a longer amount of time, but lineageOS seems to have been supporting it for exactly as long as Huawei. What am I missing?

Could it be that different versions of lineageOS are still updated in parallel, so my P9 running the nougat-based version still gets updates?

Or can I install the newest version of lineage anyway, risking making the phone laggier?

Or maybe lineage isn't designed to keep old phones updated and other custom ROMs are? If this is the case, which ones?

Or is my phone simply too old to be running any oreo-based ROM?

    What do? Advice is appreciated.

How can I speed up the time it takes to show the pop-up context menu after long-pressing/long-tapping?

Is there a way to reduce the time it takes to bring up the context menu when long-tapping (or maybe also known as press-and-hold)?

    Should I get a S9 plus or a Mate 20?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 08:18 PM PST

I've been researching for the last 5 days and I think this is gonna be my last 2 contenders. So can someone help me make a choice? For extra information, from where i'm from the S9+ (6GB RAM & 64GB) is at $600 and Mate 20 (6GB RAM & 128GB) at $515. And it seems like the S9+ excel on camera quality, CPU power and screen resolution, but of course the storage and battery life is worse. So is the extra price worth it?

Also, if you want to recommend me another phone, i won't mind but please tell me which phone would you choose between those 2 first.

Getting notifications to behave like iOS

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:19 PM PST

I recently moved to a Note 9 from an iPhone, and the way the notifications work on the Note 9 is really really annoying me so far. I looked at all the settings and searched online, but there doesn't seem to be a simple fix. The main issues are:

    • The screen doesn't wake up on new notifications
    • I can't unlock the device without dismissing the lock screen
    • I have to manually dismiss all notifications all the time or I'll miss new ones.

for #1: With iOS, when you get a new notification, the screen wakes up for a few seconds and then goes back to sleep. This is perfect when I'm on my desk and the phone is on a stand or just on the desk. I can glance over to see what the notification is. With the Note 9, I have to click the power button, which sees my face, and unlocks the device putting me on the home screen, then I have to pull down the notification icons. The only workaround I found online is to install Glimpse Notifications which requires access to all my notifications including their content. That doesn't seem right to me. I feel like I just have to trust that random app that it's not a spyware?? really??

for #2: On iOS I can "unlock" the device without dismissing the lock screen with the notifications. That way I can interact with the notifications and see all their details, then go to the home screen if I want to. With the Note 9, as soon as the device is unlocked it takes me to the home screen, so I have to pull down the notifications again. I can't seem to find any settings to not auto-dismiss the lock screen on unlock. Is there such a setting?

for #3: On iOS once you "see" a notification, they get pushed down into an "earlier" section. That way I don't have to manually dismiss every single notification I keep getting. They move away from the main notifications area. I can still get back to them by looking under "earlier" if I want to, but the main notification area is clean. With the Note 9, I need to keep dismissing every notification or I'll miss new ones since all notifications from the same app are added to the same part. I'm guessing there is no workaround for this? but how do you deal with lots of notifications, like work email, group chats, etc?

Pixel XL: Audio/video not in sync when recording.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:31 PM PST

Hey yal, so I've been having this issue lately when trying to record video. The video records but the audio and video are not in sync. Occasionally when I'm recording I'll get a message "can't record audio. another app is using the microphone." I'm really at my wit's end with what it could be, I've tried disabling all audio permissions for apps except the camera app. I've had some random success recording clean video/audio, but most of the time it gives me the error msg or it's out of sync a few seconds. Any ideas what it could be?

Is there anyway to open the share menu via a gesture in Fluid Gestures?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:40 AM PST

So I'm on a Pixel 3 and using Fluid Gestures. I share alot of memes and random stuff with my GF and it'd be nice if I could just swipe up on the right side to open the share menu on the current thing that I'm on such as the image viewer on Boost for Reddit or an Instagram post. I've tried other share menus Fliktu but when I try to add that option to Fluid gestures there's no real "share menu" option even if Fliktu is set as default but also selecting Fliktu as an app option just opens the settings.

I also have Nova and it feels like I'm getting close because in Fluid Gestures I'm able to go into the "Shortcut" tabs and select something called "Nova Actions" which then shows a list of specific actions with certain apps which makes me think I could trigger the specific share menu action in Fliktu. I was unable to locate the Android default share menu so maybe it's in their too but none of these options seem to work. Any Fliktu action would for some reason open a random Amazon service like photos or Amazon shopping. Not sure why but ya.

Every time I ask Google Assistant a question, it makes me pick a default browser when I already have.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:05 PM PST

It will say, "complete action using:", then it will show the browsers, then it will have a box to check and it will say "make default browser". I check the box every time, and then the next time I use the Google Assistant I have to go through the same thing

An app I made was suspended. Is my Play developer account in danger?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:32 AM PST

I recently received a DMCA takedown notice from google because my app had copyrighted content.

The removal is justified, but it was a small app barely generating any revenue so removing the copyrighted content is not worth the time.

What does this DMCA takedown mean for my developer account? Does it count as a strike?

Will taking the time to remove the copyrighted content and reinstating the app preserve my account status? I'm worried this might have any consequences that aren't immediately obvious or problems I'll encounter long term.

Obviously, I don't intend on uploading copyrighted content again but I'm worried this app suspension might harm future launches.

Recently came into possession of an S5. I dont plan on making it my everyday carry phone, how else can I utilize it?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:10 AM PST

Hey guys! So I recently came into possession of a Samsung Galaxy S5, a hand me down from a family member. I've been going back and forth between iOS and Android for a few years, and can appreciate traits of both. I was planning on using the S5 as my everyday carry phone, but it's got a pretty large dead zone on the left side of the screen and I'm not in a place right now where I'm going to put in the effort to fix it. It's not so big that it renders the phone useless, but it's large enough to make typing a pain (I have to constantly rotate the phone), and tapping anything on the left side is a headache. Also it seems to register random touches sometimes, which I assume is related.

Suffice it to say, I'm probably going to stick with my iPhone for the time being. However, I know how open ended Android devices can be and I was wondering what other ways I could utilize it. I own a Chromebook and know they two can work in tandem, but from my (admittedly small) research it seems that I can only really share messages between the two so far.

So, any nifty things that can be done with an android that's limited to WiFi access? Right now I'm just using it as a music player and will probably do some light time wasting/gaming on it (assuming that touch screen issue doesnt get in the way too badly). I do plan on rooting and seeing what little tweaks I can make. I like customizing, tinkering, and really just playing with tech I get.

Transferring outlook contacts to new Android phone?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:07 AM PST

Hi everyone. I just got myself a Xiaomi mi mix 3 and I am very unfamiliar with android. I am coming from a Lumia 950 Windows phone. I have all my all contacts in outlook. When I open the outlook app on the mi mix 3 it lists all my old contacts. How can I now sync these contacts to the phone so that the outlook contacts show up in the normal android contacts app?
