Fairly High-End Laptop to Act as a Portable Desktop ($2400 USD Budget) Posted: 14 Feb 2019 01:02 AM PST As the title says I'm wanting a laptop that I can use as a desktop machine while at work(40 hrs/wk). By this I mean it will come to work with me and stay plugged in so battery life is no issue. I'm not actually doing any work on this PC, it will just be used to game on while I'm here. The specs that I'm looking for are roughly a 17" display, i7 processor (it doesn't really matter here, most high end machines have an i7 anyway), and a NON-MAXQ 1070 or higher graphics card. Like I said, battery life isn't an issue and also I don't mind it being a little loud as long as it doesn't sound like an airplane is taking off in front of me. A few concerns that I have with a laptop in this range is that temperatures are an issue so I want one that has a good cooling system. I don't want to spend so much money on this computer for it just to end up overheating on me. I wouldn't be comfortable reapplying thermal paste on this machine either. I'm buying in the US if that wasn't clear by the price tag. Thanks in advance for any help/advice given. [link] [comments] |
Need a laptop for light video editting Posted: 14 Feb 2019 03:00 AM PST Im using Sony Vegas pro 14.0 strictly, and the editing style is very subtle and light so other than the basic cuts, not much is needed. Not looking for something with a huge battery life as i dont mind doing my work while keeping the laptop plugged in, the main objective is to save as much money as possible because other than watching videos and editing the laptop is not going to be used for anything else, would prefer for something thats built decently so it doesnt overheat within a few hours. I was looking into gaming laptops because for the most part they're very all-in-one from my understanding, https://www.ebay.com/itm/SEALED-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-Laptop-15-6-i5-8300H-8GB-RAM-4GB-GTX-1050Ti-CX0056WM/273594319123?epid=25026348772&hash=item3fb37e0113:g:pGQAAOSwIKNcA2Sl:rk:1:pf:1#rwid caught my eye the most - great specs, cheap for what it offers, however i read that there's some overheating issues present which prevented me from buying, and so i came here thinking that i've no clue whats the most important thing for running vegas 14.0 smoothly, do i even need a dedicated graphics card? (1050ti) if not, why would i bother getting something like what i linked above, as i previously stated, saving as much money on this purchase as possible is the main objective, please guide me through it and let me know what should i be looking for? (Dedicated graphics card, processor being the most important part? RAM? etc) Country of purchase : Europe (Lithuania) OR Canada since thats where i'll be traveling and dont mind receiving it at either place [link] [comments] |

Gaming Laptop: Around 1500-2800 USD Posted: 14 Feb 2019 12:43 AM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Anywhere between 1500-2800 USD, Country: India * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** No, I'll mostly use it at home, I want the best performance in games (especially), and other demanding programs * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not a factor * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15 inch/greater (preferably) * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Gaming definitely. Titles may include:- CS:GO, Rocket League; Battlefield 5, PUBG, Apex Legends (Maybe?), some AAA titles maybe Demanding applications will include Photoshop, Illustrator. And I'm also planning on programming, web development too. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Games mentioned above. Settings- Medium to High settings 1080p, 50-60 fps atleast? * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Metallic build with minimum chasis flex preferable. Keyboard should be good. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Not sure if I can get any with RTX cards, if I can then I'll wait for more data to come out. Just want the best performance this price can get. [link] [comments] |

Best laptop under $1,000 for pushing Adobe CC Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:09 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1,000 max * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for using Adobe CC--multiple programs at once. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Whatever gets me the above needs. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Ditto. (if relevant: my main workstation runs Windows) * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Adobe CC; Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Audition, InDesign, Audition, primarily. Gaming; big bonus if possible. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I'll take what I can get. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I value reliability over other factors. And a good keyboard is nice. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Is it just a matter of more power with this need? If so, that's fine. I don't care about looks or thinness or lightness. Also, I multi-task and fidget around like a crazy person, so agility when swapping programs or tabs is #1 on my list. Thanks! Looking for gaming laptop best overall Posted: 14 Feb 2019 12:00 AM PST Looking for a good gaming laptop but reading all these reviews has my head dizzy. Preferably something slim that I can carry around with ease. My budget is ~2k max. Anybody any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Recommend me an all-purpose laptop for university (IT student) and basic gaming, 700€ budget. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:27 AM PST Budget: Around 600-700€. I have a little wiggle room but am not looking to spend way over 700. I am aware my budget is on the very low end for what I'm looking for, and am happy to take recommendations for older/dated models. Country: Germany, but can order from pretty much anywhere, am not tied to the QWERTZ-keyboard layout either. Purpose: I want/need a laptop for an average IT student (reviewing lectures, coding, etc.) that has enough battery life to last 4-5 hours without being connected to a power supply. Since I travel a fair amount, I would also like to be able to play games on it on basic settings - basic means, I just want my games (MMOs like GW2, indie games, older AAA titles) to run somehow so I can access my accounts when I'm not at home, and maybe play a few rounds when I am bored. Since I already have a desktop PC for "pretty" gaming and don't play on a competitive level, I am not going for amazing visuals, 60 fps or a full-blown "gaming laptop" that is on par with my desktop setup. Size and Weight: I wouldn't want to go below 14 inch screen size. Weight and thickness is unimportant to me, I can manage carrying a little more if it means I get more performance for the same price. Operating system: I will most likely set up my own stuff so I don't need anything pre-installed. Will be going for a Linux/Win10 dual boot system. Hardware requirements: I don't have any special requirements regarding HDD size, RAM size or CPU/GPU model. Most likely I would need a dedicated GPU to run the games I was talking about, from what I know integrated graphics won't be enough. I also don't need any special bells and whistles like fingerprint sensors, a screen with touch functions or detachable keyboards / a tablet-laptop hybrid. I will have a mouse plugged in for a fair amount of the time, so I don't care about touchpad quality either. My laptop will get carried around in a backpack and travel a lot. I don't care if the wear shows on the outside, but it should remain functional at least. :p A sturdy keyboard with a good feel to it would be nice - I type rather fast, and type a lot, and I have had cheap laptop keyboards break on me after a lot of use. Otherwise, it'd be great if the model would allow for exchanging broken parts (e.g. a dying HDD) without bricking the whole system. I'm not much of a hardware tinkerer, but would prefer to be able to fix those things myself instead of having to send it to a repair shop. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Best gaming laptop for around 2000 euros? Must have a 120hz/144hz screen and at least a GTX 1070! Posted: 14 Feb 2019 01:20 AM PST |
Posted: 14 Feb 2019 12:15 AM PST Hi all, I am after a 2-in-1 laptop 13"-14" mainly for home office/business travel and watching Youtube/movies. My budget is about AU$2500 (US$1800). Research so far points to Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre x360, Lenovo C930. I am wondering if these high end models are worth the price or should I go for lower models such as Lenovo 920 or 720, Dell Inspiron 13 7000 or HP Envy. The current ancient Dell I am has gotten too slow after 11 years, so I do not mind paying a higher price for something that lasts. Currrenty these are the 2 deals that I am rather keen, does it make a lot of difference due to the CPU and amount of memory: Lenovo C930 - AU$2550 (US$1800)
Lenovo C930 - AU$2280 (US$1630)
Many thanks in advance for your inputs [link] [comments] |
Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52-59FT SSD update Posted: 14 Feb 2019 12:00 AM PST Hi I have the above laptop which I purchased after reading the recommendations from this subreddit. It came with a standard 2.5 1TB HDD but I would like to add a 1TB SSD. Unfortunately the acer site is useless at advising which would be best. It is my understanding that this is supported but I have the following queries:-
I would like to move my OS and some games onto the HDD so speed is crucial for me. I am grateful for any help [link] [comments] |
Acer Swift 3 with MX150 AND upgradable RAM Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:43 PM PST Can someone please help me track this down? I'm pretty sure it exists but I'm having a really hard time sifting through all of the different generations and configs. Thanks in advance! I'm in the US if that matters.
I really just wanting this thing for casual everyday use (Web browsing, Microsoft office, and maybe Logic Pro X) and occasional work with large spreadsheets. Really just want to be able to juggle multiple apps at once with no issues. I've also had my eye on the Lenovo Yoga 720 and the ASUS VivoBook S. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:07 PM PST Budget: Around MYR6,000 (USD1,500) or below... Though I could squeeze in a few bucks to make that MYR7,000 (USD1,700) or below. However, I would like to stay within my budget please. Now, I know that my price range is a bit low for what I'm asking for, but hey- it might be plausible to have a device like that, it's just that I can't seem to find the one with the sweetspot after a lot of research... Country: Malaysia. However, I am able to order globally if I have to. Purpose: I need a laptop that is great for intense gaming, while at the same time, use it for my 3D modeling work during my classes and projects. I would also like to play recent AAA titles, (such as: PUBG, Battlefield 1 and V, Black Ops 4, Apex Legends, etc) that run at ultra settings at most 60fps with a 1080p resolution. However, I can make do with high settings up to 144fps at least (I would need these since I'm a competitive gamer). I would also need good battery life for normal usage that will last me around at least 5 hours or more. Size and Weight: I would like to go for a 15" screen, since a 17-inch may be too heavy and big for me to carry around in my bag all the time. And I would also prefer thin bezels and no "nose cam". However, if thin bezels are out of option due to my budget, then any bezel would do, just make sure they aren't an "eyesore", or too "fat"... As I've already mentioned above, I might need to carry my laptop around most of the time, so please make sure the laptop ain't too heavy. But a little heaviness is manageable... Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit would do just fine. The "pro" variant might be out of my budget~ Hardware Requirements: I would like to have a hexa-core Intel Core i7, as I heard CAD work requires a multi-core CPU for good performance and rendering. Though a quad-core CPU will do just fine as well... I would like to have a Type-C Thunderbolt 3 connector as well. Therefore, I will be able to plug in eGPUs for future-proofing purposes. I am not really looking forward to building my own desktop PC anytime soon. For the gaming performance I'm aiming for, I would suggest a GTX 1060, as it suits my budget range yet it is powerful enough for my requirements. I don't really prefer a 1050 Ti, but if I really have to- then I might have no other choice. On the sidenote, I would prefer a 144Hz screen with great sRGB color accuracy too. Preferred RAM storage is 16GB for heavy multi-tasking or running a single very heavy application. Good and loud speakers are also preferable, for media and entertainment usage. Such as Netflix, YouTube, and so on... And I don't really think there is a 2-in-1 laptop with these specifications in my price range, so that's definitely out of question. I don't really care about a fingerprint scanner and all of those little extra features too~ On the otherhand, a trackpad with a Windows Precision driver is definitely a must. Unless, if you have something better or a reasonable alternative to it. RGB backlighting in the keyboard would be nice to have, but again, a blue or white backlight would be fine too. A strong build quality is highly preferred (i.e aluminum build, or mixed with a bit of good plastic, a "carbon fiber" finish, etc). The screen, keyboard and hinges must be reasonably rigid as well. Where the screen and keyboard won't flex too much, and the hinges are not too tough and not too loose (ie. allows the srceen to be smoothly lifted up with one finger) I like to type fast too, hence a keyboard with good travel distance would be nice. Overall, the other important things are the presence of an Ethernet Port, an HDMI port, USB-A 3.0+ and (maybe) an SD card reader. Otherwise, having upgradable and changable internals, such as the RAM, Nvme PCIe SSD, and HDD are preferred as well. That's all from me and thank you very much in advance! [link] [comments] |

Looking for an option to edit and color footage on the go. Battery life isn't huge for me since I would probably do these things while there's access to an outlet. I know cores and GPU is very important in these programs (Davinci Resolve and Premiere), and that they favor intel and Nvidia. I assume these will also meet gaming needs. [link] [comments] |

ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Gen) vs. T480s vs. T480 Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:48 AM PST I'm currently on a MacBook Pro 2011 on its last legs, and I want to get a new computer mostly to use for my upcoming MBA program (online), and for job searching in the near future. With the current sale going on at Lenovo, I used my company benefit site to build out three different options following the recommended configurations from my business school: Current gen i-3 or better, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD. On each, I went for the best display option so I wouldn't drop a grand on a computer and later on wish I spent a little more on the thing you look at when operating the machine. Not sure if that' complete necessary, since I honestly haven't seen any of the Lenovo displays in person as the Best Buy's around me seem to only carry the personal use lines (Ideapad, Yoga), but I did it anyway to avoid potential buyer's remorse. I'll mostly be using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel PowerPoint, OneNote), browsing the web (Chrome), streaming music (Spotify), and watching on-demand broadcasts of class lectures. I don't anticipate my use will stray much from what I listed, as I watch Netflix and stream (when I do) on my TV. I will be going to and from the library with it, but I'm sure any of these will be more portable than my current MacBook. I have the come up with the following options: X1 Carbon: i7-8550U (I needed to go up to the i7 or i5-8350U with vPro in order to get the 16GB RAM), 16GB onboard, 256 GB SSD, 14" HDR WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS glossy with Dolby Vision, 500 nits T480s: i5-8250U, 16 GB (8 Onboard + 8) DDR4, 256 GB SSD, 14.0" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS anti-glare, 300nits. Coming in at $98 cheaper than the X1 before tax T480: i5-8250U, 16GB 8 + 8 DDR, 256 GB SSD, 14.0" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS anti-glare. Coming in at $71 cheaper than the T480s before tax. Please let me know if I missed anything. I didn't use the form since I had narrowed my search down to three very specific builds based on what I've read in this sub and also my school's recommendations. Thanks! *Edit: re-configured so that all have quad-core i5 processors based on a recommendation. [link] [comments] |

The base specifications are: CPU: i7-8750H or better GPU: GTX 1060 6GB or better SSD: An absolute must. No HDD as a main boot drive. Like the Lenovo Legion Y7000, I'm looking for rear ports. I can't stand having side ports anymore. I wouldn't be able to use the Lenovo's crap keyboard layout unfortunately, otherwise I'd be more than willing to simply stop looking and buy it. If anyone knows of a way or person who could give me the keyboard layout the "normal" laptop comes with and slap it on the Y7000, I'll just buy it. Basically I'm looking for everything the Acer Aspire 7 has, at the specs listed, but with minor tweaks. I get that the perfect laptop doesn't exist but if we still have to continue to pay $1,000+ for a laptop, we should be able to have it the way we want it. If anyone knows of a company, or individual, that offers more customization of the physical layout of a laptop, please, point me in their direction. Examples of preferred performance: Minecraft, since it runs on Java and Java has a shit garbage collection that results in cpu spikes and fps stuttering, I want a laptop that theoretically could play it with very decent settings without fps stutter or massive cpu spikes. Space Engineers, it has yet to be optimized for peak performance over features, I'd like to be able to theoretically play it with mid to max settings, and stable fps, while streaming it. Basically I'm looking for a laptop that could be a command center on-the-go. I would like to be able to play a game on one screen, while streaming it, and browse the web on another. I know I am very picky but in today's world with technology moving as quick as it is and with RTX on the rise, a decent command center laptop that can keep up with user input, is not asking for a whole lot. The budget can be ignored if, and only if, the perfect laptop exists. [link] [comments] |
