How many access points should I install with this floorplan? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:55 AM PST Looking at either AC-Lite or AC-Pro access points. Is it a huge step up to do the pro? Nanohd looks nice, but is expensive. Floorplan: https://imgur.com/gallery/xl1iGWK
Tldr: how many access points for my floorplan? Where should I put them? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:11 PM PST I've had the same modem/router since 2013. I've been noticing more frequent drops of service over the past few weeks. I'm wondering if it has to do with age/technology change. I currently have a Netgear N450. I currently have Cox Internet Essential (30 MB down, I think 5 up). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:46 PM PST I have been using dynamic QOS on my Nighthawk R7000 for a long while now and just realized this my be the wrong thing to do. My connection is around 300mb down and 25mb up. Using speedtest.net I could usually see around 150mb down and 20mb up with QOS enabled. With QOS disabled I can get 295mb down and 24mb up with speedtest. Is there any reason to leave it enabled? My house has roughly 25 devices including nest cameras, an Xbox, laptops and phones. Thanks for any input. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 02:17 PM PST Hello, I am looking to upgrade my game center internet. It's been giving me some lag and connection issues, and has kicked me out of multiplayer games with friends on occasion. I have 3 internet connected devices (Nvidia Shield, PS4, Switch) in the game center and two others (smart TV, soundbar) in the same room (living room/game room). All are connected to WiFi. I have an Arris TM1602 router modem kit with Spectrum internet, where I'm getting 400 MB down 10 MB up. The home router is in a loft about 15 feet above and to the side of the game center, so pretty close I think. I have two options when connecting to WiFi, a 2GHz and a 5GHz. I haven't the slightest clue where to start. My preferred budget is ~$200 US but it can go slightly above. Should I just upgrade my home router to one of the fancy expensive ones? Should I get an extender to put in the game room and connect the consoles with Ethernet? My cable management is fairly decent but I'd want to avoid running cables all the way from upstairs to the game center downstairs. I've considered moving the router downstairs but I read something about that reducing its effectiveness elsewhere in the house, and also I have it connected via Ethernet to my PC. I appreciate all input and ideas! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:43 PM PST So people are telling me that I wouldn't even reach 500mbps download when I have a 1gbps internet plan. If the internet plan is 1gbps, shouldn't the speeds when downloading also reach 1gbps? How does mbps/gbps work in real life usage, such as watching Netflix videos, downloading Torrents, or uploading images to Onedrive? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:38 PM PST I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to just get my home Wi-Fi network to work seamlessly. My current setup has 1) a Linksys WRT3200acm connected to the cable internet modem upstairs at the back of the house, 2) a Linksys WRT32X in the middle of the house on the ground floor, and 3) a Linksys WRT1900ACS on the ground floor at the front of the house. I need to have a strong Wi-Fi connection at the front of the house that is capable of streaming 1080p video (over Plex from a server connected by LAN to the WRT3200acm) and supporting a Ring doorbell. I rent so I cannot run cable, 1000Mbps power line adapters do not reliably connect. As far as I can tell, as the house is old and has old wiring; however, I only have two power line 1000 adaptors. I have tried connecting them between the WRT1900ACS and the WRT32X, and used them to connect the WRT3200acm and WRT1900ACS (which seems to be to far for them to reliably connect.) Neither seemed to help. All of the routers are running DD-WRT and are linked by WDS on the 5 Ghz (ath0) radio. The WRT3200acm is in WDS Station mode while the other two routers are in WDS AP mode. All share the same ssid (ssid_ac.) The 2.4 Ghz (ath1) radios are all set to AP mode and have a common ssid (ssid_bgn.) The third radio (ath2) on the WRT3200acm and WRT32x are both disabled. All of the routers can see each other, all have acceptable speed, but there is a huge issue; at least once an hour, the entire WiFI network completely loses connectivity. No access to the internet (no ping even when only feet from the WRT3200acm) and no access to each other (Plex streaming from a server connected to the WRT3200acm cannot reach a Chromecast connected to the WRT1900acs.) Things I have considered: 1) trying to setup a mesh between the routers with either OLSR or B.A.T.M.A.N.-adv. Unfortunately I don't quite have the technical expertise to get this going. For BATMAN, I can install OpenWRT on all the routers, telnet in for basic operations, but getting the whole thing up and running is a bit too daunting. For OLSR, I have trouble understanding the DD-WRT guide. 2)Buying an additional Powerline adapter (or pair of Powerline 2000 adapters) and connecting one to each router. 3) Scrapping the whole setup and trying an out of the box mesh solution. 4) Telling reddit about my problems and hoping a kind redditor will brighten my day and save my sanity by helping me figure out what to try next, how to improve the configuration, or how to troubleshoot this. Being a broke student, I obviously would prefer solutions working with the equipment I already have. If you got this far, thanks for reading through and I would really appreciate any comments. I think I need a new modem/router? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:45 AM PST I currently use WoW as my internet provider and am using their tech, which is a modem/router combo, specifically an Arris TG2472. It has been meeting my needs surprisingly well since we all switched to the WiFi part of it, by all I mean, my phone, hubby's phone, my Chromebook, my computer, his PS4, his smart tv, and my PS4. I know real gamers wouldn't dare use WiFi and would opt for cable hookup, which I plan to eventually, especially now. The reason I think I might need a new modem/router is because since Anthem's release, my husband has been playing it nonstop. Which is fine. I also plan on getting it eventually. However, since he started playing it, I cannot stream YouTube on any other device and everything else loads slower. This only happens when he jumps on Anthem and I can only imagine the horror this will be when I get the game. I'm not the most tech-y person, but I do think something is up and I'm not sure how to fix it. I could really use the help and I hope I provided all the information needed to get me that help.(Also, please don't comment saying how Anthem is a trash game. We all have opinions and we all make our own choices. If you don't like the game, you're entitled to your opinion, but that's not what this topic is about. It's about the quality of my internet. Thanks in advance.) [link] [comments] |
How do I make my own Teamviewer type of connection? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 05:42 PM PST Hi all. I'd like to setup 2 computers to be have a direct secure VPN connection. Both computers would have changing global IP addresses as they would both be used while traveling to different areas. One of them would need to be remoted in to and doesn't require taking control of the other one. I like the ease and security of teamviewer but it's laggy and transferring larger files can fail. My old company had a VPN for me while I traveled for work. I'd like something like that, but fast like Remote Desktop. These are both windows 7 machines. I'm open to buying devices as needed, but it seems like it could be done with just programming or settings. Any advice is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Best network configuration for RADIUS authentication Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:50 AM PST Hello everybody ! I plan on setting up RADIUS authentication on my home network and I was asking myself a few questions. But first off, the basic architecture would look like this: WAN---------|My ISP router|---------ETH-----------|PFSENSE router|--------AUTHENTICATED ETH+WIFI------- The points I am unsure are the followings: - PFSense seems to include Freeradius. Is it wise to have the Radius server in periphery of the autenticated network? - If not, in order to limit the number of devices on the network, is it recommended to run the Radius server on the same device than the Active Directory? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Asus RT-AC1300GPLUS - Port forwarding doesnt work. Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:19 PM PST So, I have an Asus RT-AC1300GPLUS that wont forward ports no matter what I do. So far I think I have tried everything: DMZ, Turning off the firewall, factory resetting, changing the local IP of the router, different ports, different hosts, upgrading the firmware. The current firmware on the router is the newest one available (3.0.0.4.380_8457). I have searched around and this seems to be a common problem with these routers, but none of the solutions posted work. There's also a built in openvpn feature that I tried turning on but it wont let me connect either (unless i'm on the local network..) I have configure a fair share of routers over the years, but never have I run into something so fucking weird and annoying as this. [link] [comments] |
Router & modem constantly needing reset? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:18 PM PST I have a fairly unusual home internet situation, and it's driving me crazy. My house is out in the country in rural Illinois, where there are not many/any good internet options. I'm currently using AT&T 4G LTE as my home internet source, through a Netgear LTE modem (Netgear LB1120) in bridge mode. This goes into an ASUS TM-AC 1900 router (RT-AC68U), which was bought used and might be the root of my issues here. My network consists of less than 10 devices connected at once, most of which would be sitting idle at any given time. When it's working, it's passably useable. I get about 10Mbps down and a whopping 2Mbps up, which is, sadly, the best speeds available in my area. However, several times a day, the internet just totally stops working. The wifi signal will still be there, but trying to load a webpage will result in an infinite loading signal. This is also the case on hard wired devices. What's really odd is it never happens while I'm actively streaming or gaming on the connection, it's always when it's sitting idle for a while that it quits. Resetting the router alone will usually fix it, although I usually have more luck just resetting everything by flipping the power strip off and on. But, I'm getting more than a little fed up with climbing the stairs to reset the power multiple times a day just to use my internet. My question is, would buying a new router be the best option here, or could something else be going on between the router and modem? I don't want to shell out for a new router of it won't fix anything. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:30 PM PST Hi, I'm in New Zealand. Our house has ultrafast broadband provided by Spark, NZ's largest telecommunications provider. When the guys sent by Spark set the broadband up, they put some electronic box in the wall which is hooked up to a Huawei HG630b modem/residential gateway. For ages we had trouble with the Wi-Fi dropping off on our mobile devices. It would just suddenly disappear and then come back in around a minute. We were told that Spark gives you the cheapest modem, so we got a Netgear AC1750 router, thinking that this would fix things. However, I was told that the router has to be plugged into the Huawei modem and wasn't a replacement for it. This mostly stopped the Wi-Fi dropping off but not completely. Also, the 5G network usually seems slower than the 2.5G network. Not sure why this is. Recently our internet has been very slow, so I think it's time to get a new modem. Would one of these or these do the trick? If so, which one would you recommend? Our max budget is $400, but we really don't want to spend that much. [link] [comments] |
Att gigapower fiber port UBNT bypass Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:04 PM PST Getting ATT gigapower installed and my apartment has a fiber port, not an Ethernet port. Am I still able to bypass the ATT RG? Also, what ATT RG equipment should I try to get? [link] [comments] |
Getting a wired connection to another room. MoCA best option? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:37 AM PST I just moved into a new condo and I would like to get a wired connection into 2 different rooms. I would like to avoid drilling into the walls if possible. Interestingly we have a panel in the master bedroom that is for OnQ home networking stuff but it looks to be just for phone lines from what I can tell. There is a coax in that panel but that isn't where our cable is coming through. Instead our cable is coming through the living room which is fine, since we want wired internet there anyway. However, I'd also like it in the master bedroom as well. I've looked into powerline as an option but I guess that can add a fair bit of latency to the connection which I would like to avoid. Is MoCA my best option? Or is there another option I dont know about? Also worth noting is that a FiOS option is available at our new place in addition to cable. We are willing to switch to FiOS if that will make our networking any easier and/or better. Thanks for the info! [link] [comments] |
Any Wireless Extenders With Custom MAC Spoofing? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 12:17 PM PST I know that most extenders Proxy a virtual MAC for each device that is connected. Is there any way to personally set a custom MAC for a device instead of letting the hardware do it? On the flip side, I also know you can change the MAC of routers, but for wifi extenders is that still applicable? Any experiences with TP-Link? [link] [comments] |
SSH to client on differnent VLAN? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:56 AM PST I have a machine on the 10.0.2.x vlan that I use as my primary and ssh into the rest for administration. Site-to-Site VPN (Raspberry Pi to pfSense) Posted: 24 Feb 2019 11:43 PM PST Hello! I'm trying to do a site to site VPN, the server is on a Raspberry Pi, and the client is on a pfSense box. Right now, from the pfSense side I can access the network on the Raspberry Pi side, but not the other way round. It's the first time I'm tying to do this, I'm not sure what I'm missing. 10.0.0.0/24 to 192.168.1.0/24 works 192.168.1.0/24 to 10.0.0.0/24 doesn't work

Gamer needs advice on wifi hardware Posted: 24 Feb 2019 08:28 PM PST I am a gamer in need of a new router. My whole house uses wifi. There is usally around six devices connected at the same time to my wifi. The devices are a couple of phones a computer and an xbox, and worst of all a chrome cast . My router can handle most of these at the same just fine. I think the problem is just the chrome cast it hogs up all the bandwidth, and I cannot control the qos because the router that I am renting is from spectrum and they disabled the qos feature on the router. I need advice what router should I buy? I need something that will allow me to get small constant packages to my computer. The modem i am using is sbg6580. Also I dont want to break the bank I dont mind buying refurbished hardware. Edit: Thankyou all for your response. I now have enough info to fix my connection issues. [link] [comments] |
Bringing a Huawei b525s-65a 4G router to the US Posted: 24 Feb 2019 11:35 PM PST Hello everyone, I am moving to Utah from Finland in a couple of weeks. Here I have a Huawei b525s-65a 4G router that I use for my home internet. I am thinking about bringing it with me but I do not know if that is wise. I see that many ISP in the US limit how much you can hotspot or tether the internet. So here are my questions: 1) will my internet be limited by whatever the hotspot limit is for my plan? 2) Will the Huawei b525s-65a work with American networks? 3) How fast and reliable are the internet speeds/connections in the US with a 4G router? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can't find rack mount ears for my switches Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:41 AM PST I bought two used switches recently and wanted to mount them on my rack but the original owner lost them. My google-fu seems to be failing me as I can't find the rack mount ears for them. I don't know if there are some universal ones that would work with them either. In any case, here are the switch models, if anyone could propose a solution I'd appreciate. Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:39 AM PST So I've been trying to figure out a cheap and efficient way to get Ethernet to my computer. I've went from running Ethernet through my attic, to setting up a Moca adapter, but referencing the picture linked, if the blue is where my router and modem currently are, red are coax lines, and green is where my computer is, couldn't I theoretically just patch my main internet coax line into the coax line running to the green circle, and then set up my wireless from there and have my router close enough to plug directly into Ethernet? Is there anything wrong with the internet needing to travel 50+ feet of extra coax? [link] [comments] |
Can I "hot-swap" a modem/router? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 02:34 PM PST I bought a Netgear CM500 and a Nighthawk AC1750. Can I set them up without disconnecting the existing router/modem. I can't have the internet go down for more than 2 minutes. [link] [comments] |
