Thin light laptop for software development Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:25 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: United States, $2000 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-1 could be fine, just want thin and light with a good keyboard. Want respectable specs, will clarify at the bottom. Battery life isn't a critical concern but don't want it to be abysmal. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I will be carrying this in the same bag as my MBP 15" for work. Would prefer under 3 lbs, closer to 2 if possible. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, maybe Mac Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No heavy graphics work or gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? NA Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Great keyboard and build quality are important. Solid screen. I want USB C especially for charging. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I plan on doing mobile dev, Java/go containerized development, some devops tool experimentation, and front end web development (angular, react). I think 16GB RAM would be ideal, with a respectable i5 minimum. I'd prefer Linux but could be talked into the MacBook air or pro 13" So far Thinkpad X1, Dell XPS 9380 developer edition and MacBook air are front runners. I like the lightness, keyboard, and build of the x1 and the extra screen space. I'm concerned about it's Linux support (18.04 Ubuntu), which leads me to my first choice the XPS. I like the idea of supporting Linux with my wallet but have QC concerns. Finally while I've had iffy experiences with quality on my MBP 15 2017, the OS experience is very smooth, and would be open to another OS X product. Can anyone speak to Linux comparability on the X1 and how the quality compares to the Dell? Similarly any feedback on the 2018 Air or 13" MBP would be nice, although the MBP is a bit heavy for my Iiking . [link] [comments]
Graphic Design Student looking for a Laptop for Uni work. £600-£800 Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:56 AM PST Hi all, I'm a Graphic Design uni student looking for a new laptop. I have a desktop in my flat which i use for heavy tasks (Cinema 4D rendering, Octane render and After effects) and i'm looking for a laptop that can basically start projects, not end them! Total budget and country of purchase: £500-£800, UK Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Don't care for the 2-1, but not opposed to it. 7+ hours battery would be a dream, and an SSD is preferred! How important is weight and thinness to you? As i'm gonna use it everyday in school, lightweight wold help but not a necessity! Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. OS by far! Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Most of the Adobe Suite, Basic 3D modelling to start projects. Cinema 4D/Fusion 360 If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Don't care for gaming Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Solid build quality, don't mind about touch screen capabilities. Rather the PC specs be better than the flashy additions! Thanks for any advice you've got guys! Just bought a laptop on eBay but was it a bad move? Cheap price but marks on screen Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:39 AM PST I bought this for £600: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen, i7-7600U 7th Gen, 16GB, 512GB, FHD, 20JES0AJ00 It seemed like a bargain but the description says it has key marks on the screen, here's a photo of it: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/024AAOSwnDRcdxOO/s-l1600.jpg Wonder how the marks even got there, does it suggest the body of the laptop is out of sync? I only noticed this after I bought it, foolishly. Can those marks be cleaned off? If not, is it possible to get a screen replaced on these Lenovo laptops, or is it ridiculously expensive? Omen by HP 15 vs DELL G5 15 gaming Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:45 AM PST Omen by HP 15: i5 8300H RTX 2060 8GB ram 256GB NMVe + 1TB 7200rpm IPS Full HD 144hz display +- 200$ cheaper and will be avaiable in my country next month Dell G5 15 gaming: i7 8750H RTX 2060 8GB ram 128gb NMVe + 1TB 7200rpm IPS Full HD 60Hz display Will be avaiable in mid may. I'm in no big rush to buy new notebook right now but would rather buy it sooner than later so thats + for the omen. Also knowing that 128GB ssd is pain in the ass to haggle with I would need to either use my old ssd or invest extra for new bigger one. Also 144hz display (dunno if its necessary). So is that better processor worth the extra money and time waiting? [link] [comments]
LG Gram, XPS 13, or Surface Laptop 2? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:15 PM PST With a budget of about $1000, which of the 3 laptop options is the best suited for a student? I live in the USA. I am looking for the best performance/longevity as well as port compatibility for the money. Weight and thinness between these options are pretty similar already, so as long as it's in the ballpark that's fine. I use Windows. Preferred screensize is 13-14". I'll be using the laptop for heavy studying and possibly light gaming. Touch screen and finger-print reader preferred. I need at least 1 USB 3.0 port for my wired mouse.

Light laptop for gaming and art Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:46 AM PST Price range is about 800 dollars, but I'm willing to go over. I would want a fairly portable one. The games I hope to be playing are Half-Life, Apex Legends and CSGO. Light stuff. If you could find a touchscreen laptop that fits my needs, that'll be amazing, but I'm fine with a drawing tablet for now. Thanks [link] [comments]

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 in Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Medium to a few heavy games If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch and Earthfall heaviest games 60fps at high to ultra settings Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality, 3 usb 3.0/1, hdmi, usb c/tb, and good amount of storage if possible an ssd too Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was thinking something with a 1050 to 1070 gpu for gaming. And around 512gb ssd or hdd with ssd. A bright and vibrant screen if possible. Also not necessary but a 144 hz screen would be great. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

2 in 1 laptop for digital art/animation/game dev.? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 10:39 PM PST
Around 1k, but definitely willing to invest if worth it. Buying from the US.
Need a 2 in 1 and prefer battery life to be at least 5 hours.
I will be carrying this around, my preference would be around 5 Ibs? Willing to sacrifice my back if worth it.
Anything but Mac.
At least 13 inches.
Bear with me... I will be using digital art software like Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Maya, ZBrush, Unity and Substance Painter/Designer, Adobe stuff. Also need it to work well with high-running game dev. and animation programs like Unity, unreal3D, maya, etc.
Little to no gaming. I'll probably just play small indie games...
A really good tablet pen built for artists. Some pens out there are good for note-taking but don't work as well for artists (handling, pressure, angles) and I'd like to avoid that. Not a requirement but prefer it not to be too noisy when heating. ————————— Let me know...are all these requirements too much to ask for? Does my dream 2 in 1 exist? If you don't have any recs in mind, perhaps you can list some specs recommendations? All I know is that I should get at least a 16 GB RAM. Thanks! Laptop for Programming College Student (<$1500 USA) Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:11 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1500, though I'm flexible. USA * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** No 2 in 1. Battery life isn't too important to me, though preferably more than 4 hours * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very. On a 1-10 scale (1 being not caring at all and 10 being a necessity), it would be a 2. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I already have a case that fits my current 15.6" display so it'd be nice to reuse. On a 1-10 scale, a 3. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Gaming. Overwatch, Black Desert Online, LoL * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Overwatch - Medium settings at roughly 50 fps Black Desert Online - Low to Medium settings at roughly 50 fps LoL - Low to Medium settings at roughly 50 fps * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Kind of silly, but having a number pad is super important to me A good amount of USB ports An HDMI port Good cooling system * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** A friend of mine suggested the Lenovo Ideapad 320 so I'm considering that as it seems to be a pretty low price for the quality, but I'm willing to spend more for a more quality laptop. Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:18 PM PST Hi all, looking at getting a Dell gaming laptop and I wanted to get feedback. I'm not heavily invested in playing current AAA titles. I'm going to be playing mostly older games (Fallout 4, Fallout New Vegas and ARMA series). In your opinion, is the Alienware overkill for that? Why and why not? I'm leaning towards the G series based on my expected gaming, however, the allure of Alienware is obviously there. Thanks! [link] [comments]
