    Australia $3000 Macbook Replacement

    Australia $3000 Macbook Replacement

    Australia $3000 Macbook Replacement

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:32 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $3000 aud maximum (insurance money from my stolen MBP)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and specs matter most, though as long as the specs beat 2018 touchbar 13" MBP.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, if everything else is the same between two models under the budget, but one is pricier and thinner, I would prefer the thinner one.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I will be putting Linux on it so OS doesnt matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13", though as long as its not above 15 I dont mind too much

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing with photoshop and lightroom, some gaming. Just needs to have a GPU as good as or better than an Intel Iris Plus 655, not the highest bar but rules out stuff like the XPS 13

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dont really have specifics, mostly older stuff.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchpad must be smooth, accurate and without lag. Build quality must be excellent. There must be no coil whine (this burned me last time I left Apple)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Will be for UNI use. Had my Macbook stolen last week and getting insurance money, had some issues with the mac that have turned me off Apple who have lost touch with their consumers. Needs 16GB of ram and a minimum of 512GB SSD, though 1TB preferable. CPU and GPU just need to match or beat a i5-8259U with Iris Plus 655. If it comes down to CPU or GPU performance above this, CPU is preferable as it will be used for development work over gaming, and the IGPU was enough for my needs already.

Last time I ventured out of Apple I go an HP Spectre, and regretted it. The touchpad was floaty, the keyboard was of terrible quality (kept flexing AND keys fell off), thermals were a huge issue (the feet melted off multiple times) and there was terrible coil whine. Ended up getting into a battle that lasted 3 months before I was finally able to get a refund. This is what I want to avoid happening again

8GB vs 16GB RAM for HP Spectre x360

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:48 AM PST

So, I'm currently a senior in high school, looking to buy a laptop for college. I've mostly settled on the 13-inch HP Spectre X360. The problem is, I'm not sure whether I should be getting 8gb of RAM or 16gb of RAM. Because of the place I currently live(not the US), the two models I can buy are either the base i5/8GB/256 SSD, or the i7/16GB/512 SSD for $200 more.

While I would normally go with the first option, I'm hoping to use this laptop for the next 4-5 years as my sole computer, so I'm a little worried about the laptop becoming less usable in the future. For context, I may take a few engineering classes/machine-learning heavy courses, but probably won't do any intense gaming or photo/video editing.

Would the 16gb be worth the higher price, or would it not be necessary/the laptop itself not last long enough to warrant the upgrade. Thank you!

3D Environment Artist - moving from desktop to a Laptop - MODO/ZBRUSH/UE4 and some gaming

    £700 - £1000 (ono) + UK

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good Battery + best specs for the money

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

not important, let the thiccening commence

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15in or preferably 17in (Im put off by small screens )

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

3D Modelling, ZBrush, UE4 Game Development, Substance Designer/Painter texturing

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Star Citizen could be cool (I'm applying for the studio). FPS from 40-60

but it's mainly playing environments I create, and perhaps will play older games like Morrowind, Skyrim and Indie games.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

reliable build quality (hinges on screen etc).

Basically a laptop, with a nice size screen and battery life, that will allow me to run my 3D modelling programs such as 3DS Max, MODO and texture them using programs like Substance Designer/Painter, and get them into realtime rendering engines such as UE4/Unity/Cry Engine.

    Kind Regards,Glenny

I'm looking for a lightweight gaming laptop that I'll also be using for coding. I'm fine with the 15 inch screens and am looking for the RTX 2070 cards.

They both computers seem extremely similar other than minor differences in the body.

Lightweight (ish), quiet, good battery life laptop for university? And why not mac?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:36 PM PST

Skip to second paragraph if you don't feel like reading surrounding details. To preface I am not at all trying to sound argumentative here- I'm completely open minded to non-mac computers and am just looking for advice. I've been a mac user forever now, and it's because every time I've used a windows computer that's supposedly a cheaper alternative of the same quality as a mac, it has crashed on me. And that's just having used word trying to make a table and the program just glitching out on me, or opening a few too many tabs at once. I'm not here to argue mac v windows of course, I'm actually looking to be persuaded into finally moving to windows-run laptops- I just have some trust issues lol and would like to know why mac really isn't a good idea when my experience has been mostly good (although my perfectly fine mac air did blue screen me due to hardware and never recovered).

Here's what I am looking for:-Lightweight so I can carry it around- my brother has a Dell XPS 15, 15 inch-ish, and that is an acceptable weight so anything equivalent or under.-Good battery life- VERY important. I've been using a MacBook Air but it is a good few years old now, and its battery lasts not even 2 hours. I need to get 6 hours out of it at least for my lectures, running on word and on a high brightness.-Keyboard- I am very used to mac and wanting something that types similarly if possible. Less fan noise and minimal overheating as much as possible.-Something that can run word and excel and things like R (the program I need for statistics class) without crashing or glitching out on me. I don't need the most powerful laptop but hoping for something that could say, do basic things on photoshop.

With all this in mind, my price point is 1,500 max. I can get a 13 inch macbook pro, newest edition, for $1500 right now and don't think I could justify getting something non-mac that functions the same for a higher or similar price unless someone could explain why that is a bad idea. I'm open to a reality check if I've asked for too much in the one laptop! Thanks everyone!

Edit: 1,500 Australian dollars! This is about 1,100 USD.

Gigabyte aero 15 vs msi gs65/75 vs Dell xps 15

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:35 AM PST

I need a new laptop, budget is max 2k$. Obviously the less it costs for quality, the better.

I want it to be good all around, as in have a great display(be fast, have good colors, brightness) and with competent battery and be able to game on it from time to time (cs go/WoW/maybe metro).

The gigabyte 15w or X seemed the best as the optimus and huge battery makes it last a lot for such a powerful laptop while still being light with great thermals(with all the possible connectors), but it does cost the most out of the bunch.

The msi is cheaper but the motherboard is upside down and i would want to upgrade the SSD manually to get more storage + the thermals don't seem as good

The xps seems like an amazing deal for the price, but the 60hz is something i just can't stand as i've been working on 144hz displays for a long time and even browsing is agony on a 60. The 1050ti might be sufficient for light gaming, but the refresh is something that really puts me off. Other than that, i find it amazing

What would you recommend? Any good deals on any of the laptops above in the states/around NY? for the aero, newegg seems to have the lowest price

Looking for a Photoshop and good color-accurate laptop

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:33 AM PST

tl;dr: I only plan to work on Photoshop and some light low-poly 3D that the intregrated 8th gen cpu should be able to handle. Color accuracy is really important. Max budget is 800euro (I am from the EU). I don't care about video games.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Greece / EU max 800euro

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs for money also sturdy

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not so important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer it if it was 15'

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I only want this laptop for Photoshop, low-poly 3D and light video editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? no gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality + good/excellent screen

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to buy a laptop just for Photoshop, low poly 3D and light video editing (so only for work). Color accuracy is very important to me as well as at least 8 GB (with the choice to put even more in the future). I was thinking of buying a used late 2011 Macbook pro since they're so cheap (400-500$) with good screen quality and a CPU capable of doing stuff (also ram upgradable up to 16 which is nice) but the idea of buying a used laptop does not really intrigue me. Any suggestions?

Could someone smarter than me tell me if this is a good deal please?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 11:57 AM PST

I've got a friend who's selling a laptop, it's the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga X1 (1st generation) i7 processor 6600U, 16GB RAM, with a 512gb SSD HD. He wants £600 for it, is that a good deal? It's in good working order. I want one for writing when I travel, and some Lightroom photo work, maybe some gaming. But is that a good price or am I best off asking for a cheaper price or looking elsewhere?

I'm clueless when it comes to modern laptop specs so would really appreciate any advice, even if it's a simple yes or no!

    Laptop for college

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:33 AM PST

    Hi,

I am looking for a laptop for college. After watching this video I am wanting to buy a lighter laptop -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3Qit4CZ6EU

The 2016 video recommends the Acer Chromebook 11 and gives pretty good reasons for getting a Chromebook and not a higher powered laptop. I am wondering if there are any similar but better options 2 years later? I am only wanting to use light programs such as word as I have a tower at home which I can use for any other uses. My budget is around $500USD. (Laptop doesn't have to be a Chromebook)

    Thanks

Uni student and teacher wanting to switch from Mac to Microsoft

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:08 PM PST

I already posted this to r/computers and someone suggested I post it here for some advice :)

Anyway to the question, my 7 year old MacBook Air died on me today. I was already thinking about replacing it, so i guess I'll need to.

I have no idea what to purchase, but I thought if I gave a general outline of my life and needs this sub could help :). I'm in Australia and don't really want to go over $800 AUD but under that is amazing.

    1. I want to switch to a windows OS. I just find it more compatible with the things I do, and often find myself using my boyfriends desktop so I don't have to convert everything.

    2. I need a laptop, I often lay on the floor and spread my things out. A 2 in 1 or touchscreen is an awesome bonus but not a deal breaker (esp considering my budget).

    3. I do a lot of uni work and job work on my laptop. Multiple windows, multiple files, multiple programs.

    4. I'm not a big gamer, but I really like the sims and have a fair few of the expansion packs (ok all of them). I've had to stop playing after get famous because my laptop kept crashing 😡

    5. I mostly use one drive (it's what we use for work) so memory isn't a huge thing for me. Basically whatever it has will get used by the sims

    6. Longish battery life, I love being able to take my uni work to the park 😊

    7. I'm a wee bit impatient with loading 🙃

If it also helps I am a teacher and am doing my degree online. Our internet is Australia standard crap, so the super massive Mac updates have always been a bitch.

Intel H series CPU, 14" or less?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:51 AM PST

I realize that I may very well be looking for a unicorn. I've done a lot of searching but haven't been able to find anything that even comes close. H series CPU, 16GB RAM, and 14" or less are the critical parts of this.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, ~$2000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is kind of important. Prefer 4.5 lbs or less

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux and Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing in Lightroom. Gaming isn't critical, but I'd like the option to add an eGPU later down the line.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not too worried

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good touchpad, 1440p display

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd looooove an Intel H series CPU and 16GB of RAM

Looking for a portable Movie Screen in Canada under 700 CAD

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 11:30 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
After discount, tax, and (if any) tariffs: 700 CAD. Purchasing from Canada. If I can get something amazingly better for a few more dollars I am willing to splurge a little.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Prefer not having a 2 in 1 feature. I would like better graphics and smooth performance for mostly watching films. I will definitely need large storage for movies! Long battery life is a bonus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not too important but nothing on the extreme side. I have chubby fingers.

    • Which OS do you require?
      Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Prefer to have a larger screen.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I want to be able to play League of Legends but mostly I want to watch movies and stream shows, nothing too intense. Being able to view at 1080p+ would definitely be nice.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I think at least being able to play League at 60fps with medium settings would be nice, but again, I mostly want to be able to watch films in really high quality.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality is preferred. I sometimes use too much force on my appliances. I don't need anything fancy like a finger-print reader.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like to think of my next laptop as a portable movie screen, if that helps with finding a laptop. Gaming is very low priority, but I will still be playing very occasionally.

    Thanks!

Convertible that is otherwise as close to ThinkPad T440p as possible (quality, serviceability, ports), up to €500-800 refurbished [EU]

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:38 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      open to buying refurbished
€500, can be stretched to €800 if justifiable
      EU

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
I want something between ThinkPad T440p (quality, serviceability, lots of ports, dual hard drives) and Samsung Chromebook Pro (convertible, 3:2 touchscreen), with better battery life (>5 hours would be nice).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
thicker is better, if it means more ports and better serviceability
      lower weight is preferable, though

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      GNU/Linux
      some virtualization support

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
3:2 or 16:10 is strongly preferred
roughly ~12" to 14", larger might be too heavy
must facilitate two windows side by side (screen at least 1920px-wide)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      nothing demanding

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      nothing demanding

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
see above: build quality, serviceability etc.
notably: GPU must have open-source Linux drivers (i.e., not NVidia) 1TB storage for offline access to my library on the go, thus it must support an internal 2.5" HDD (I'm not okay with paying extra €200 for SSD yet)
input devices: I want to use either only touchscreen/pen, or an external USB keyboard and trackball
I will be using an external monitor (HDMI/DisplayPort), Ethernet, USB DAC and other peripherals at a desk, thus plentiful on-board ports or affordable/portable dock are a must

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've looked into Fujitsu Lifebook T904 or similar, but there were compromises. I'm interested in alternatives.

Looking for an Indie Gaming Laptop for 650 or under!

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:19 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      - $650.00, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?
      - Its hard to decide, but we are looking primarily for a "best specifications for the money", but battery life is also semi important for us.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - Fairly important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      - Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      - N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - Streaming Netflix/Hulu, Indie Games, Office suite
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - Minecraft, Don't Starve Together, Binding Of Isaac, Portal 2. Looking for a lag free experience in all the games listed. So Max FPS if possible.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - Must haves: USB port(s), decent keyboard
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - We are looking for a Laptop that will be able to handle indie gaming and if possible we do not want it to look like the typical "gaming laptop". This is for my Wife and she will not want to use an intense looking build in a public place such as the library or coffee shop. If we can find a perfect laptop and it still looks gamer(ish) we will still consider, but we are hoping to avoid "that look".

Looking for a laptop with a 2080 in it

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:55 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US. ~3k

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat, I'll explain further down

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17>15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. Apex legends, csgo, overwatch, witcher, metro exodus, bf5, cb2077 on release

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 144+hz on laptop screen. have external 4k monitors that I would like at least 60 fps out of

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Thin bezels are a huge plus but not required

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looking for a laptop with a full 2080 in it to replace my current laptop and desktop. As mentioned above, size is somewhat important. I don't want one of those 2 inch thick, gigantic chungus machines. Ideally it'll be as small as possible while also maintaining decent cooling.

I've been looking at this laptop in particular: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GE75-Raider-048-i7-8750H-Aluminum/dp/B07MQBLW8Z

It seems to have everything I need, decent screen, thin bezels, full 2080, and most importantly a 17 inch screen in what is normally a 15 inch body.

However I know from past experience that MSI has some issues with their screens, my issues being repeatedly getting multi thousand dollar laptops with dead pixels on them, but not enough dead pixels to warrant MSI doing an RMA (which is a stupid policy)
So before I take the plunge and fork over 2800 bucks, I was wondering if there is anything else that I should be looking at that fits my needs.

Looking for a programming/ sound editing laptop in Canada

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 07:45 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada, 1500$
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care about 2 in 1, prefer a mix between best specifications and battery life, with a slight preference for battery life.

      • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I would get a windows computer and install Linux on it

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13 and 14 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None of that, I will use it for programming f, running node, visual studio a lot of web browsers tabs opened at the same time.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not gaming on laptop

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It comes down to a good quality built that will age well, a solid keyboard and a computer that I can open to upgrade the ssd/memory if it comes to that (I can already replace the hard drive by a 500gb ssd). I don't care about touch screen.
