5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 91)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:58 AM PST

Happy Friday morning/evening, fellow Android gamer. Here are my 5 quick mobile gaming recommendations of the week - let me know what fantastic games you have played yourself in the comments :)

This week's episode includes a tactical SRPG based on a nearly 30-year old game IP, a new casual indie golf game, a difficult parkour-inspired level-based runner, a 2D survival RPG with unique grey-toned graphics, and a 4v4 hero-based shooter aiming to be the Overwatch of mobile.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 91 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's jump to the games:

Langrisser [Game Size: 2.04 GB] (free)

    Genre: RPG / Tactical / SRPG / Turn-based – Requires Online Access

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Langrisser is a high-quality turn-based SRPG with great depth to its tactical combat system, and only a light focus on its bot-controlled PVP - which means the game doesn't feel pay-to-win despite the gacha hero-unlocking mechanics.

The game has a lot to offer, with an interesting story that has an English voice-over in addition to the original Japanese version, plenty of missions, guilds, an open world that allows us to follow the main story or complete side-quests and boss fights, and everything else I expect from a great RPG.

Langrisser does have an energy system, but I haven't felt limited, and you can easily get 30-45+ minutes of play-time per play-session as both missions and leveling up rewards free energy. While I'd rather see them completely gone, both the energy system and gacha elements are implemented in a non-forceful way that ensures the game doesn't feel too heavily monetized.

Nano Golf: Hole in One [Game Size: 101 MB] (free)

Genre: Golf / Sports / Casual - Offline Playable

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Nano Golf: Hole in One is a fun casual golf-game where we have just a single shot at making a hole-in-one and thus progression to the next random level, aiming to get as far as possible before eventually losing.

There are plenty of characters to unlock using in-game gold, each of which change the level designs as well, and with no energy systems, lootboxes, or lives, the game truly feels like a good ol' mobile game; it's simple, but fun.

Ares Virus [Total Game Size: 294 MB] (free)

Genre: Survival / RPG – Requires Online Access

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Ares Virus is a 2D survival game that mixes RPG elements with a grey-tone post-apocalyptic world, and some relatively hardcore survival gameplay.

Progression is very slow, and you'll spend a lot of time running back and forth to collect resources (unless you buy the $1 bag-upgrade), but the world-exploration is interesting and due to the difficult, crafting new items feels rewarding.

Monetizing through occasional ads and iAPs (up to $50) to make the game less grindy, the monetization is better than in e.g. Last Day on Earth: Survival, but the bag upgrade feels almost necessary to enjoy the game.

    Google Play: Here

YouTube First Impressions / Review: Here

MAD RUNNER [Total Game Size: 200 MB] (free)

Genre: Adventure / Runner - Offline Playable

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Mad Runner is a forward-runner level-based (not endless) parkour-inspired game where we jump from platform to platform across a wide range of different levels, ranging from modern city skylines to fantasy Ork fortresses.

The game's 15 levels and endless mode are very difficult, and the wacky art-style and humorous characters remind me of indie platformer Blackmoor, with the difficulty of Glitch Dash.

The frequent ads between levels can be removed through a $2 iAP, and although the game does have an life "energy system", I never even once ended up using all my lives.

    Google Play: Here

YouTube First Impressions / Review: Here

Heroes of Warland [Game Size: 355 MB] (free)

    Genre: Shooter / Hero-based / PVP / Action - Requires Online Access

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Not unlike FRAG Pro Shooter, Heroes of Warland is a 4v4 hero-based shooter that aims to mix Overwatch-like hero shooting gameplay with a card-based upgrading system unlocking new stat-boosts for our characters and their weapons.

The lootboxes rewarded from winning matches open instantly, which is a welcomed change, the developers genuinely seem to listen to their community, and the heroes are interesting, but the game is currently held-back by glitches and errors making it feel less polished than other shooters on mobile.

The card system sadly makes the game's iAPs pay-to-win, which is a real shame since the game has potential and is decently fun. You've been warned!

[DEV] Hey guys! My first game, The Marble Run, is out on Android! If you wish to check it out I would be very glad! Thank you!

You guys know any good console quality games for Android that aren't P2W?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 07:57 PM PST

I have a Galaxy Note 8. I was wondering if any of you guys knew any good console quality games that aren't pay to win, supported by a million ads, have any type of micro transactions... basically I just want a real game. Idfc if I have to pay full price for the game as long as it's a real game. I just know of Square Enix and Tell Tale Games selling REAL games. (I don't mind DLC) So far 99% of the games and just about any app in the Google Play store is garbage. I left Apple long ago because of this and now Android is doing the same shit. I have like 20 games on my phone and I rarely ever play any of them. I'm tired of ads. I'd rather pay a one time fuckin fee than spend $10 bucks every few days on fuckin gold coins or gems just to be able to continue. These dumbass games punish you with ads and micro transactions even if you're doing good. Half of them crash your damn game coz mid battle when their fuckin pop-op video ad with the stupid timer shows up. I delete 9/10 games I download almost immediately after trying it.

81 Tips and Tricks for Brawl Stars

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:04 PM PST

Tl;dr 1 - The 81 includes 22 Beginner, 35 Intermediate, and 24 Pro Tips. I actually added several extra tips afterwards, but I had already made the video thumbnail so all the others are extra.

Tl;dr 2 - My videos are very different than normal YouTube videos. People that like reddit usually like my video style (short and packed with info). https://youtu.be/nJmyoP191qo
But for those of you who still rather read, here is my video script:

I wanted to start out by clarifying that I am not a pro at this game. Being a pro at this game requires a lot of grinding. Even if I had a 100% win ratio, I do not have the 400 hours required to get to the top.

Luckily for me, making tips and tricks videos has more to do with doing research and making calculations then it does with being a pro at the game so I have done the research and made the calculations and I have found 81 tips and tricks for you.

If you want to have a flare on the battlefield, you can change the color of your name by clicking here on the settings button and then on the change name button. You will then want to input this code <c#>name<c/> with your desired name here and the number of the color you want inserted here. Make sure everything looks right before you click confirm.

While we are here, connecting your supercell ID will allow you to get a free wizard skin for Barley and connecting your facebook will automatically import your friends. They won't automatically be your friends in the game, but they will show up in the team up section which makes it a lot easier to find them.

You should know by now that you get free tokens and stars every time an event resets, but what a lot of people don't know is that you can get more stars and tokens from events that aren't even on this page. In order to do this, you will need to find a friend that has a game type available to him or her that is not available to you or even an event with a different modifier, then you can get additional stars and tokens from your friend hosting that event for you.

If you want to spend money in the shop, the best deals in the game are the 4 special offers given to you when you reach the experience levels 5, 15, 25, and 35. Buying all of these packs will cost you about $40, but they are by far the best deals in the game and they will give you a ton of gems. The best way to spend your gems is usually token Doublers, but every once in awhile, you will see the opportunity to buy a Mega Box for 49 gems which is a slightly better offer and you get instant satisfaction.

Lastly, if want to buy powerpoints to max out your account, do not buy power points with gems because it is cheaper to just buy coins with gems and then use those coins to buy power points.

Every time your brawler gains a power level, they get a 5% increase to their health and damage, capping out at 40% when they reach level 9. That might not seem like much, but these increases are multiplicative which means that a level 9 brawler is almost twice as strong as a level one. I am surprised by how many players don't understand this. And then, after you get a brawler to level nine, you have a chance of finding it's star power which increases the Brawler's Effectiveness by another 5 to 15% making it safe to say that all lvl 10 brawlers are at least twice as strong as a level 1. For those of you who are new to Brawl Stars, a star power is a brawler's unique passive skill. You can find out info on each of these passive skills by clicking on a brawler from the brawler list.

Before we get into the 5 main game types, let's go over a few beginner tips. There are two different ways to shoot. Clicking and holding the attack or Super Button lets you aim your attack and even cancel it if you change your mind whereas tapping them does a quickshot that has an auto aim. Using this quickshot is much better at close ranges in situations where it is easy to hit your enemies, but it is almost worthless at a long range against moving targets especially if you have a slow attack.

It is important to conserve your ammo. It is smart to shoot a warning shot every once in awhile, but using all of your shots makes you vulnerable. So even if no one is immediately around you, just shoot one shot at a time so that you won't get caught off guard.

Entering grass makes you invisible. If you get close to someone else who is also in the grass then they will be able to see you and if you use your attack even if you aren't attacking anyone, you will be revealed to all players on the map. The same is true if you get hit be someone else's attack which is why it is often smart to fire a scouting shot into grass before you enter it to avoid getting ambushed. Some supers destroy grass and it is often strategic to do so, but I will talk more about this when I cover the different game types.

As you know, shooting your weapon is what charges your super, but for a lot of brawlers, using your super can also charge your super. So for example, if I'm on a map that is good for Ricochet, there have been times that I have been able to use his super three or four times in a row. This is called super stacking and it is easiest to do with brawlers that have a knockback or stun.

Using walls or debris as cover is essential when going up against a long-range brawler, but keep in mind that brawlers like Piper and Brock have attacks that ignore debris and someone like colt has a super that can shoot through anything.

You can see slightly more North then you can South so being on the bottom of a map gives you a sight advantage. This is especially helpful the more ranged characters that are on the map.

Getting star player does not mean that you were the best player on your team. It just means that you did the most damage to other players and in some situations, playing to get the most damage is not what your team needs to win. (more exp)

Memorizing the movement speeds of each brawler can be really helpful for two reasons. First, so that you know when to keep chasing someone or just give up and second, knowing when you can get away from someone or when you should just fight because they will just catch you anyways.

The easiest way to get to a 300 trophy level is in solo showdown. In fact, you can get there by just hiding in a bush the whole time which sounds really boring to me, but it is super effective.

After that, the easiest way to get to a 500 trophy level is by finding a good teammate in Duo Showdown. Solo showdown is no longer as effective because people will secretly team up which puts solo players at a big disadvantage.

And then after that, if you'd like to get to the top, I would recommend finding two people that work really well with you, getting on discord together and finding an event type that you guys can get at least an 80% win rate. (58) But if you are going to make this game your competitive game, please be sure to check out my caution video first so you know what you are getting into.

The first game type available to you is gem grab. Winning in gem grab has everything to do with having control of the map. Sometimes that includes killing, but often it doesn't. Getting a

player to low health and forcing him to retreat to heal up is almost as good as killing him.

The current meta for Gem grab is to have a ranged gem carrier, Bruiser and a ranged support type brawler and then to split up into the 3 lanes with the gem carrier in the middle. Now that all grass can be destroyed permanently, I think we are going to see some new metas where some teams will purposely destroy lanes to force a team fight making some combinations of brawlers not as effective as they once were, but we will see how that plays out.

The best mindset to have going into gem grab is that you are trying to get gems further and further into your zone of control so even if you are supposed to be the aggressive player on your team, if you kill their gem carrier and get 5 gems, you need to fall back to your team's zone of control until you either win the game or you pass off those gems to your gem carrier. Passing off gems requires dying which is difficult to do well unless you have a team that knows what they're doing so unless you are a strong team with good communication, I recommend just playing it safe until you win.

The ultimate goal in gem grab is to expand your zone of control to where you are fighting near the spawn of your enemy. This also requires a good team with a gem carrier that knows what they're doing, but if you pull it off well, it is the best way to secure a victory.

Gems spawn every 7 Seconds so keep track of the time and return to the middle when there are enough gems to win the game. Once you've achieved a countdown, start falling back to your spawn point, but don't fall back too quickly or you could get yourself pinned.

Once you hit 30 trophies, you can start playing solo and duo showdown which as I said earlier, is the best way to get to each brawler to 500 trophies. Showdown is a very simple Battle Royale game. Instead of getting items, you can get power ups from destroying crates or killing other players. Each power up gives you 400 hp and 10% extra damage. One of my favorite things to do in Showdown is bully other players into giving me their power ups. This is especially easy to do at low trophy levels, but it can also be done at high trophy levels if you can go unnoticed. Simply wait for a player to use all of their ammo on a crate and then rush the crate. They will be forced to either fight you at an ammo disadvantage or give you the contested power ups.

As I mentioned earlier, you can get a ton of trophies by just hiding the entire game. It's super boring so I don't recommend doing it because it's not very fun, but it is effective for getting to 300 trophies.

Regardless of how you play, knowing when to hide and when to fight is incredibly important in Showdown. Killing other players will give you more power ups so it is often better to try to get kills, but certain brawlers counter other brawlers so you want to avoid fights that you will probably lose. In fact, sometimes you want to avoid a fight that you can win because that guy can beat the guy that can be you. I know that can be a little confusing so to simplify it, if there are 3 brawlers left that counter each other in a triangle. If killing this guy will give you enough power ups to beat your counter then great, go do it. But if that guy has a lot of power built up as well, then you want to make sure the other two fight each other first so that hopefully he will use his advantage to win giving you the final advantage. I know many of you would probably appreciate me giving some more examples of who counters who, but those things can change with balance updates so I am avoiding specifics as much as possible to make this video alst as long as possible; however, if this video gets lots of likes and subs, then I will post more videos on Brawl Stars with all of those details.

After you reach 150 trophies, you will unlock daily events which includes Bounty, brawl ball and Heist.

Bounty is essentially just a game of who can get the most kills with a few flares that make it more interesting. Every time you kill a player, your team is awarded the number of stars that were over that player's head. Everyone starts with two stars over their heads and every time they kill a player that number grows by 1 with a max of 7 stars. Now some players once they get a lot stars, they start to play cautiously to avoid giving the other team those seven points which is somewhat good, but if you've gotten seven stars, then you are doing something right. Whether you counter those other Brawlers or you're really good at that map, whatever you are doing is working and you've already gotten more points for your team than they will get from killing you and if you get more kills, your Bounty no longer increases so just keep doing what you're doing.

When a teammate gets to 7, then the rest of the team needs to center their strategy around protecting that brawler. Even if your engagements start trading kill for kill at this point, your team will still get the upper hand because kills done by your 7 star player will not increase your team's overall bounty.

Anytime your team is winning with a difference of more than your team's current bounty, it is usually good to slow down the game. This will put pressure on the other team and if you place yourselves well, you can force the other team to make bad decisions.

Brawl Ball is soccer, but you get to kill each other which is pretty cool. Very much like gem grab, brawl ball is all about your team's zone of control except in brawl ball, as soon as one of your teammates picks up the ball, your team is down a man in the fight. So the first noob mistake in brawl ball is rushing for the ball because getting the ball immediately puts your team at a disadvantage. The most important thing in Brawl ball is to have a good team composition. If your team can win every fight, then you can kind of do whatever you want, But there are a few things that can give you a pretty big advantage. First, having at least one person that can break walls so that you can clear a path to the enemy goal is really important. Second, having a player with a lot of movement speed or skills that give them movement can be really helpful for getting into position to make a goal. This is especially helpful for teams that pass the ball. Do not underestimate passing the ball. I have noticed that a lot of teams underutilize thisr. And then lastly, having players that have crowd control abilities can be really helpful for securing a goal. Teams that coordinate their supers and use them all in conjunction, can often create an unstoppable advance with the ball.

Heist is also a lot of fun and it is very different than most of the other game types. Focusing too much on a zone of control can often be a waste of time in Heist. In fact, tricking the enemy team into controlling most of the map is exactly what you want to do in Heist. The only places that you don't want the enemy team is within range to damage your safe or near their safe when you are attacking it so anytime they are controlling the middle of the map, then they are exactly where you want them. The trick is getting past them. Most heist maps have lots of choke points making it difficult to sneak past enemy lines so the first part of the game for advanced players is usually pretty slow. Both teams are taking shots at each other waiting for an advantage to make a push towards their safe. This is where it is helpful to have a wall breaker on your team, as soon as they have their super, I recommend using it to create more passageways on the enemy's side of the map. Some people are against this strategy, because they would rather use that super for the momentum to make the first push, but I think creating more passageways on the enemy's side is going to be more helpful in the long run and I think it creates a momentum in and of itself.

When your team is able to make a good push on the enemy's side, you want to focus on doing damage on the enemy's safe, but sometimes it is best to keep attacking the enemy Brawlers instead of attacking the safe. I've noticed that a lot of the best players will use their Supers for damaging the safe, but use their normal attacks for killing enemy Brawlers as they spawn.

So those are the five main game types. When you hit 350 trophies, you also get access to the 2 or 3 different weekend events. Each of those events have their own strategies, but I will cover them in a future video.

Then at 800 trophies, you get access to special events which are one of those 5 main game types with an added event modifier. These modifiers are not only a lot of fun, but they can give certain Brawlers huge advantages so pairing the right Brawlers with an event type can make it a lot easier to increase your win rate to get trophies faster. There are so many examples of this that this also will have to wait for another video.

Well. That's it for now. This is my first tutorial video for Brawl Stars so if you liked it and you want me to do more of these, then please like the video and subscribe to this channel. I can see exactly how many subscribers I get from each video I do so the more subscribers I get from this video, then the more videos I will do about Brawl stars.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:31 AM PST

    Hi

My first ever game just got it's full release after about half year beta testing. I was working on this part-time for some months now. I'm an Android developer but I have zero experience in game making or game publishing.

During the beta tests I had many very kind and curious e-mails/feedbacks from all around the world. It means really much that I could make fun moments with my game to strangers.

Thanks to everybody who tried my game and had any feedback.

I always dreamed of developing my own game since I was a child.
Looks like my dream comes true after all. It's a spiritual journey for me, I cannot find words.

Games like Mobile Royale but actually good?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:44 PM PST

Mobile Royale is a "build an army" game which fights against others. But it's very greedy with mtx and time gating and loot boxes. Is there any similar game that is made for player fun and not for greedy developers.

Looking for a few Android users to checkout a premium retro themed endless sailing game

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:10 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I posted about any of my games. I'm working on a quick premium (1.99$) game for Android to be released outside of play store (under my own store) and I'm looking for feedback on it.

The game is an endless runner featuring one out of four boats, each with it's own handling and abilities. It has a 80's VR look presented on a CRT screen. I posted two screens from it here.

I am looking for 4 people to help me test out the game and make sure it's working properly across a wide range of devices, especially on low-end phones. As a thanks for helping out you'll get two vouchers to download Ebony Spire (PC - Win/Linux) and Rogue Sweeper (Android) from my store and the full game once I release it.

The /r/androidgaming community gave me a ton of useful and valuable feedback in the past and this is the reason why I reach out to you guys again. I started a new venture and quality + performance is important for me. The game will feature no permissions, no ads, no IAP as I'm trying to deliver an old-school, coffee-break, experience. And since it's the first android release under my Bearded Giant brand, I want to get it right.

I'll be following this thread for replies. Your review/impressions/feedback on the game, once you receive it, can be posted here or wherever you like. If there's something you don't like about the game share it cause it means I can fix/change it before I'll release it.

    Cheers!

    Does anybody remember Dungeon Rampage?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:50 AM PST

A few years back, Dungeon Rampage was a game on facebook and in my opinion it was great. There were different levels with mobs and bosses, a basic dungeon game, but you could either join an online session or just complete them by yourself. The game also had looting, chests and skills. You cpuld get some chests and keys and open them to get some new weapons or get coins to power up your character. I am looking for a similar gaöe like this. The idea of looting, openimg chests and getting some cards that are like playable weapons are what i am looking for. Any recommendations?

    Stellar Invictus, A Love Story

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:02 PM PST

A few nights ago, looking for a new game to play on a sleepless night like this one, I browsed through this sub's weekly game thread and found people talking about this new game called Stellar Invictus. The people posting about it were so enthusiastic that other Redditors called them "shills" because it seemed so fake. So I decided to check out the game. It sounded fun, and I could always delete it if it was bad.

Anyway, I'm hooked on this game. I've never really played a game like it before, but a lot of people apparently compare it to Eve. I've never played Eve, so I don't know. It's set in outerspace, and there are empire building components to how you play. The whole game is very strategy driven, as you have to choose how to spend your time and in-game money most effectively to continue growth. There is absolutely no paying to win advantages, but I am donating to the creator because I want to help him grow the game.

Perhaps the most endearing thing is the community. There's about 80 people playing regularly now, and like me they're all super addicted to this game. The players are split into factions (different classes of ships) and corporations (user-created cooperative groups that you can join), but the most lively conversation happens in the general chat. These players have created user guides, back stories/lore... you name it. They answer questions readily and want you to succeed.

I think all the good will and camaraderie stems from the level of devotion demonstrated by the creator, who goes by the name Gerno in the game. He's said that this game was always a dream of his, and it took him years to develop. Once he got it going a few weeks ago though, he's been really active in making sure it runs smoothly and that all suggestions are taken into account for updates. He's been releasing patch updates several times a week, at this point. The game is quite literally evolving. Is it perfect? No, but it's great and getting better.

I could go on, but I just wanted to let Reddit know about this amazing game in hopes that it could bring you as much joy as it did me.

[REQUEST] Help me find the name of this game !

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:11 PM PST

Played a game years ago, and now i feel the urge to play it again but i forgot the name... Already scrolled down the game list on google play but somehow i don't find it, or maybe i just missed it.

Basically here's the characteristics of that game :

    • It's a strategy-RPG game, but more focused on it's strategy since in this game you have a mini-island in which, you can expand it's area, plant or build traps, and place your heroes on places to hold the enemies from ruining your island core.

    • You can raid other player's island in PvP, and on PvE (like story mode), you'll raid computer's island.

    • It has gacha to summon heroes to guard your island.

    • Dragons. In fact, if i recall each of island have those big-ass monsters as the last boss on that island but i forgot if it's our special units or not, i just remember i have one black dragon as the last boss for my island.

    • The characters has anime-ish illustration art and of course, chibi figures.

And that's basically what i remember about that game. Any help will be appreciated, thank you !
