Thinkpad E480 vs Inspiron 5000 Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:45 PM PST I've been struggling to decide on a laptop and was looking for some input regarding these two models. Lenovo Thinkpad E480 @ AUD$899
Dell Inspiron 14 5480 @ AUD$959
The Lenovo appears to be a consumer grade laptop marketed as a business laptop, though I've read that the build quality is good although its made out of plastic. It doesn't have a back-lit keyboard which might be a problem, though i can probably just use the light off the screen? It also is easy to disassemble if i ever need to upgrade ram/storage. I haven't really done much research into the Dell yet but currently the pros over the Lenovo are:
If anyone has any comments/information regarding this model, i'd love to hear it. [link] [comments] |
Lightweight 15.6” Quiet+Cool Laptop for Programming and College Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:12 PM PST Hello, I'm looking for a laptop with these parameters: Quiet and doesn't overheat (very important) Lightweight, around 3 pounds (very important) Starts up and loads applications quickly (very important) 15.6 inch screen (important) 4k graphics (somewhat important) Budget around $1300-1500 but can go higher if necessary to get more of the above; windows, not really for gaming or hardcore video editing, and good for programming, from USA I would appreciate any suggestions! Need a new daily driver for development projects and extensive general use Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:51 PM PST tl;dr I'm thinking of going with the Huawei Matebook X Pro over the X1E and XPS. It will be used for coding and development in addition to regular daily web/streaming use. I've read several threads here but would love to hear what people have to say.
$1200-$1500 USD, flexible to a degree or can save more if needed
14" or 15"
Possible photo editing, less but still possible video editing. Gaming is a plus but not a requirement. More to be used for various development projects. This will include possibly running VMs that I'd like to be able to give a reasonable amount of resources, if necessary.
Ii'd be happy to just play sim games like OOTP Baseball and emulate SNES/GBA/N64. Would be thrilled to be able to play something like Civ or FO:NV or even less graphically intense games.
A good keyboard is a huge benefit since it will be used heavily between two people, and I'll be writing a lot of code. I'd also like it to be portable enough where I can feel pretty comfortable throwing it in a sleeve in my backpack and take it out wherever. Things like touch screens and finger print reader fall under the "bells and whistles" category for me. A 3k or 4k resolution would be fantastic but 1080 would get the job done.
I'll still have a gaming desktop, but it's moving to a different area in the house. I need a laptop to become my new daily driver. To be honest, probably over 50% of the use will just be for random web browsing, video streaming, online shopping and so on. But other times I'll be working on a project where I have a VM running in addition to a resource hog application and 200 Chrome tabs. So I'd like something relatively beefy with at least 16GB RAM, a fast i7 processor, 500GB SSD. I've read through threads here and I've been looking between the Dell XPS 9570, Huawei Matebook X Pro, and the Lenovo Thinkpad X1E. I put together a package for the X1E, and although it came out to a lot more than I wanted to spend, I felt really hooked up. Like, extra tier of hardware than I need, extra battery, extra charger, docking station, 5 year accidental warranty. I want to be pretty set on it. But here's the problem. I've had horrible experiences with ThinkPads in the past. I've had my hands on hundreds of various business ThinkPad models, and nearly every one was a buggy pain in the ass. I was so happy at one job when we moved away from ThinkPads, and sad when I started a new job when they handed me one. I read a few blog posts where people hint at this, but still praise this model, so I'd like to hear more about that if people have a clue. The Huawei Matebook Pro might be in the lead right now. It seems like it fits everything I'm looking for at a pretty reasonable price. A few minor things I might have to get over, and it looks like their support/drivers page went down for around a week which is concerning. The 2.93 lbs and 14" screen make it seem like it would be pretty portable. Not sure how durable of a build it is. The Dell is trailing both but could ultimately win by default. The one I looked at is a little more expensive than the Huawei with worse resolution. I don't have a huge preference over 14" or 15" so not really putting that into the factor, though I do like the lighter weight. [link] [comments] |
Need a laptop for coding and some light gaming between 75k-1L INR(Indian Ruppee) Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:04 AM PST My main uses will be the aforementioned and I'll be travelling a lot so need a lightweight laptop with possibly a 13-14 inches. My main requirement is that it should have a good form factor, an SSD and a dedicated GPU. I have narrowed my search to Hp Envy 13, Asus UX430UN and Lenovo Ideapad 530s. [link] [comments] |

What laptop brands or lines should be avoided ? Posted: 31 Dec 2018 04:38 AM PST I'm want to buy a laptop but as soon as I decide on one I read the reviews and they complain how this certain brand or line should be avoided (for example I saw many "don't buy Lenovo flex") So what are some laptop brands or lines that have bad quality and will probably break down for someone who has no idea about the hardware stuff ? US, ~$800 - Looking for something light and comfortable for casual use. Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:31 AM PST
~$800, United States - $800 isn't a hard cap but I'd like to keep it around or under this price if possible. I'll absolutely look at something over this price so long as it isn't something significantly higher.
Good battery life and good specs are more important. I have a preference for regular laptops but 2 in 1 is not a dealbreaker what so ever.
Very. I've been mainly looking at ultrabooks in terms of weight and size but like I said above, I wouldn't be opposed to a 2 in 1 tablet. Anything heavier than 4 lbs is gonna be a hard no and the lighter the better.
Windows.
~13in is my sweetspot, but a little bigger or smaller wouldn't be an issue. 15in is the biggest I'd be willing to go but even that's a stretch.
I don't plan on using this for any heavy lifting at all. I want something light and convenient to browse and write with. Anything that can smoothly run multiple chrome tabs and spotify will work. I will be using Runelite to play old school runescape, but I doubt anything made in the last 10 years will have issues with that.
Old school runescape. Any other game I'd just play on my desktop.
I'd like a good keyboard and durable build. A serviceable trackpad would be nice too, though I plan on using a mouse most of the time. Touch-screen would be nice but isn't a requirement. I don't think I'd use anything else so things like a finger-print reader or optical drive aren't a necessity.
I've used my buddy's Surface Laptop 2 a few times and really liked it, however the lack of USB-C for the price and my concern that there isn't an easy way to clean the alcantara inside of it kept me from pulling the trigger on the sale they had before Christmas. That said, I'd definitely be interested in a similarly built computer. 8 gigs of RAM is strongly preferred and storage size isn't an issue. If I need more space I'll just use a thumb drive. The only other thing I'd use this for would be drawing, but that's more if it's a tablet and even then, only on occasion. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks for your time. Posted: 31 Dec 2018 09:38 PM PST Hey guys, going to be getting a laptop for my studies. After looking through some posts here comparing to my budget, I think I'm going to be getting an Acer Aspire E 15. Posted: 31 Dec 2018 03:08 PM PST I am interested in getting a Tablet for use as a Laptop. For example, the three products I am looking at are the Google Pixel Slate, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, and the Surface Pro 4. I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit for this. The Pixel Slate 8gb/128gb with the i5 is for sale for $750, plus I would need the $200 keyboard which puts me at $1000 but I can pay via payments. However, there is a larger screen and a trackpad, which is nice. Plus because it's a Pixel, immediate updates for life. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is around $800 with the keyboard. Less impressive specs, no trackpad, and a smaller screen. However, expandable storage is a plus. The Surface Pro 4 (or whatever I can get a decent deal on used) looks to be the best: native Windows, good size and good specs. However, I don't want a windows tablet (I feel like I'm buying an overpriced laptop honestly). What are your thoughts and suggestions? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Why does the RB15 have such poor battery life? Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:40 PM PST Hi, I really want to buy the Razer Blade 15 1080p 1070 model but the only thing holding me back is the battery life because I'll be using it for school then university. However, I don't really understand why it is so low. I get that it has a smaller battery than say the Aero 15X, but it's not THAT much smaller so why does the RB get 4-6 hours whereas the Aero gets more like 8-10 hours? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Portable+Durable Used Laptop for Playing Around With Linux, $250 or lower Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:39 PM PST Location: America Primary uses: Web browsing, text editing, statistical work in R, and then doing those things via VM. Situation: I want to get a cheap, used laptop for two purposes. The first is that I have started playing around with linux and would like to have a machine I can use to try out different distros. I am open to having a double-booted machine, but it also needs the necessary hardware specs to run Windows through a virtual machine. I am still new with linux so hopefully nothing that will give me a hardware headache when trying to set up the new OS. Secondly, I am going to be spending a few months traveling to locales where things like computers are often stolen. So ideally I am looking for something that is portable (i.e. not too heavy to carry around in backpack), durable (i.e., will do better than most if said backpack is dropped), and cheap (i.e., will not cause too much trouble if the backpack is stolen). I plan on selling the laptop when I return to America and then (if I really like this whole linux thing) trying to build my own desktop for linux stuff. TLDR: A used linux-compatible computer with enough RAM to run Windows on a VM, but is also portable and durable enough to take traveling. Nothing fancy will be done with it, and it only needs to last five months or so. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop to learn coding Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:24 PM PST So I am using a very old computer to teach myself coding and it has hardware issues after being 10 years old, and I am too frustrated to make any progress learning anything on my current build. It is obvious to me that I need to be making a new PC and if I want to do anything substantial that I should save up and make the best PC I can swing, but until then I want to get a decent laptop or something so that I can keep learning. I'm not expecting to be able to do high level 3D rendering or anything crazy, but is there a $500-$700 laptop that would allow me to take the baby steps I need? I just don't want to wait multiple minutes between any action on the laptop like my current PC. I know it's lame but I just want to teach myself to make a game. Can't swing school unless the game gets successful or something. Windows OS Thickness not an issue. Not a 2-In-1, if that means a tablet/laptop hybrid 15 inch Touchscreen [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Dec 2018 11:57 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1000 in USA (with possibly up to $1300 at a stretch). Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money primarily, with a good battery life secondarily. How important is weight and thinness to you? Something not too bulky, preferably under 6lbs. I won't be using it for school but I'd like it to be portable enough that traveling with it in my backpack isn't a hassle. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Under 17". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be gaming primarily, and some light photo editing with GIMP and Photoshop but nothing serious. Games listed below. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The Mass Effect series, Overwatch, and Dragon Age: Inquisition on medium to high settings. I don't know much about FPS to be honest, but RazerCortex tells me that I'm playing Dragon Age 2 on 45-60FPS with medium graphics which looks great to me (however I know that DAI has way better graphics than DAO and DA2, so I'm not sure how FPS/ graphics will translate on that game). Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is a must because I do a lot of writing, and one with back-lighting would be very useful as well. Reliable build would also be great as I'd like it to last if I'm careful with it and for it to feel sturdy/ well-made and not be difficult to keep clean. I'd love a touch-screen because I've enjoyed having one on my current laptop, but it isn't a necessity at all. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Long battery life isn't a massive issue but I'd prefer something with at least 4-5hrs for general internet use on low brightness. My main reason for getting a new laptop is to play DAI, as my current laptop can't handle it, but I'd like it to be good for more casual stuff as well. I've been looking on my own for a while, mostly at the ASUS K570UD-DS74 VivoBook (15.6"), the ASUS FX503VD (15.6"), the Dell Gaming G5 15 5587, the Lenovo Ideapad 330S (15"), and the Dell Inspiron 7567 and 7577, but I've never shopped for my own laptop before so I'm not sure if any of these are good for what I'm looking for. My best friend hypes up the Alienware laptops a lot as well, so wondering if the Alienware 13 or m15 are worth it (also have heard Alienware is overpriced)? The ASUS laptops and Dell Inspiron laptops really caught my eye so I'm mostly wondering if one of those would be the best for what I'm looking for, or if I should turn to something else? I default to the wisdom of the computer-knowledgeable people reading this. Please and thank you to anyone willing to assist! [link] [comments] |
Dell XPS 15 vs Lenovo Legion Y530 vs Eluktronics MECH-15 G2 Posted: 31 Dec 2018 02:04 PM PST Maths/finance college student looking for a Windows laptop: capable of running statistical programmes like R. capable of running games like Fortnite and COD Blackout. Pick or include any that apply: Don't really need a 2in1. **Need decent battery life, but there are sockets in the college library so I don't exactly need it to last the entire day.** How important is weight and thinness to you: **I guess I'm a bit shallow. I want it to look somewhat nice and sleek. Don't want a really heavy machine because I'll have it in my schoolbag all day.** Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: **Windows.** Do you have a preferred screen size: **15.6'' or thereabouts.** Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming: **Stata and R, Mircosoft Excel, some gaming (Fortnite and COD Blackout).** If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? **Fortnite, COD Blackout. Not a huge gamer at all, but I want to play these without hassle.** Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad): **A decent keyboard is always nice.** **I also want a very nice screen. Though I don't think I can stretch to a 4k one, unfortunately.** Further questions: Not being a serious gamer, is a GTX 1050 graphics card okay? Or should I go for a 1060 or 1070? Is 8gb of RAM sufficient, or should I aim for 16gb? Is there a big difference between the Intel i5 and i7 processors? Any input will be appreciated. Thanks in advance, guys. [link] [comments] |

Lenovo Y7000 or Overpowered 15+? Posted: 31 Dec 2018 01:00 PM PST Hi. I am a college student looking for gaming laptop to use for both gaming and studying. I am between Lenovo Y7000 and Overpowered 15+. Which one do you guys suggest for both gaming and studying? Right now Overpowered is 800$ on Walmart, but Lenovo Y7000 is 950$ on Walmart with slightly lower specs. (Costco deal is not possible for me due to 1,000$ import limit in my country) Lenovo Y7000 specs: 8GB DDR4 2666MHZ ram 512 SSD GTX 1060 6G GDDR5 i7 8750H 5.17LBS weight Good thermals and silent fans, longer battery life Overpowered: 16GB Single channel DDR4 2666MHZ ram 1TB 5400RPM 128GBSSD GTX 1060 6G GDDR5 i7 8750H 4.58LBS loud fans during turbo boost (silent during web-surfing and stuff), slightly higher performance, gets pretty hot as other slim laptops during long gaming sessions, better screen, cheaper.
