Basically I was thinking of installing Linux on my tablet, I have a Chuwi H10 plus which runs both win10 & android. I have a keyboard cover to go with the tablet but I rarely use the android side of it and was looking to go Linux for a bit more speed and reliability. Many thanks in advance.

    Best option for backup computer

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:19 AM PST

I have a very old computer that I leave for backup for any reason I cannot use mine at the moment. As of right now my 1st choice is at the shop so I turned to the old one. When I first bought the old one it came with Windows 7 installed, and after bought the new one I knew the old one would be useless with Windows in it due to its age. I followed a friends advice and installed UbuntuMATE in it, but I can't seem to be able to use it for more than a week before it starts having issues, and I can't neither update it or install new applications so I have to reinstall the OS from zero. I would like to try another OS since I'm having problems with UbuntuMATE. The only thing I need reasonable user interface since I will use the computer mostly to browse the web, its memory is of 1.8GB RAM and its processor is Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53GHz × 4

Can I use Padoka/Oibaf PPA and install OpenCL from amdgpu-pro drivers?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:43 AM PST

I'm trying to get back into Bender but I also like to play games on my work system. Ubuntu MATE 18.04.1 is my primary OS. My video card is MSI AMD RX 560 4GB. "ATI Baffin [Polaris11]"

In Blender I am unable to set 'Cycles Compute Device' to utilize the GPU unless I use the amdgpu-pro drivers, but then my games run like crap. In game shadows have to be disabled or they flash and cause frame drops, anti-aliasing needs to be off or same issue, and it still tears with v-sync enabled. The amdgpu-pro drivers are amazing crap out of box it seems.

The drivers from ppa from https://launchpad.net/~oibaf and https://launchpad.net/~paulo-miguel-dias/+archive/ubuntu/pkppa are great for games, but they don't have what I need to render with the GPU in Blender.

If I have either of these drivers, can I follow this example to install the OpenCL packages from amdgpu-pro drivers without messing up my current drivers?

    Thanks for the input

Using Ubuntu VNC for Lab Environment

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:45 PM PST

I have about 100-200 students who will be using packet tracer and jupyter notebook for training environements. Im running a 12 core 64 RAM 300 HDD server to house 15 Ubuntu VM's with either packet tracer or Jupyter.

Will VNC allow the same capabilities as RDP w/ terminal services? Will students be able to login and then have their own desktop without bothering other students?

Also and if this isn't allowed just ignore, Im dedicating about 5gb for each of the 15 Ubunut VM's. Do you think this will be enough space for 8-10 users only accessing packet tracerand saving their progress? These VM's will not have internet access and will only run low process apps like PDF.

Ensuring bash doesn't read a input as a directory

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:28 AM PST

Sorry if the title is badly worded; I'm making an alias for:

    youtube-dl -f "bestvideo[width>=1920]"/bestvideo+bestaudio --audio-format flac --yes-playlist

but my bashrc reads '=1920]/bestvideo+bestaudio' as a directory:

bash: =1920]/bestvideo+bestaudio --audio-format flac --yes-playlist: No such file or directory

    Thank you.

My ultrawide monitor looks really low resolution. Looked in settings and it is telling me that I am at 1920x1080 (16:9).

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:02 AM PST

This makes no sense because my 21:9 monitor is still like covering everything. I figured it would be 1080p, but the settings is saying that it is also 16:9 for some reason. I also don't see any way to change this. I tried to go onto xrandr and change it from the terminal, but that also did not work.

When I run mpd this message appears:
exception: Failed to open /etc/mpd.conf: Permission denied
Tried many things like chmod -x mpd.conf but that hasn't worked, can anyone help me with this?

Kiosk machine with LightDM + Openbox works sporadically

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:49 AM PST

I am trying to build a kiosk machine by following this tutorial:

    https://willhaley.com/blog/debian-fullscreen-gui-kiosk/

Unfortunately the kiosk works only about half of the time. There are three different states to which the system can boot to: 1) a regular terminal window, 2) LightDM greeter screen, or 3) Chromium browser window (this is the desired state).

What could cause this? I don't believe that the issue is related to permissions, as it still works every now and then. The system is connected to a 4G network, and would not even boot up if the connection couldn't be established.

I am running a fresh installation of Debian 8.10. Unfortunately I don't have much information about the hardware, but it has a Intel E3845 processor.

    Anything like wallpaper engine?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:43 AM PST

Just looking for a program variant of wallpaper engine. I've search around other threads where people recommend feh which I heard is CPU intense or komorebi which involves multiple minor text changes in files just to get komorebi to recognize your gif as a wallpaper. Anything comparable to the simplicity of wallpaper engine for animated wallpapers? Should I try out feh and not be worried about minor cpu increase?

I get this error whenever I launch winetricks. How do I fix this? I didn't even try to install .exe yet.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:29 AM PST

You are using a 64-bit WINEPREFIX. Note that many verbs only install 32-bit versions of packages. If you encounter problems, please retest in a clean 32-bit WINEPREFIX before reporting a bug.

HDMI to DVI cable not working for second monitor

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:42 AM PST

I'm running Ubuntu MATE 18.04.1 and I have an AMD RX 560 running amdgpu-pro drivers (18.50)

I'm trying to utilize my main workstations GPU HDMI port to a second DVI monitor. No display at all in the OS, but it does display in BIOS and Ubuntu boot screen.

    some info on my system:

X Server 1.19.6 modinfo amdgpu | grep version version: 18.50.1.418 srcversion: 533BB7E5866E52F63B9ACCB OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Radeon RX 560 Series OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.13542 Core Profile Context 18.50.1.418 Vulkan version 1.1.73

My main display is an Acer DVI monitor. I have confirmed that dual display works fine in my DE with a small KUMAN 7" HDMI touch display I use for my Raspberry Pi project but I cannot get a second monitor to display using an HDMI to DVI cable. I know the cable is good because it works with my Pi's and my kid's Linux Mint machine).

Is this a know issue? Is there a work around?

    Thanks for your time.

Mint 19.1 vs Ubuntu with Cinnamon.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:02 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've been playing with Mint and Ubuntu recently. Other than the default desktop interfaces, I cannot tell the difference. I seem to prefer Cinnamon as my desktop. But once I've installed Cinnamon on an Ubuntu machine, what else is different?

All reviews I read seem to focus on differences between default desktops (which I can change) and default installed applications (which I can install). It strikes me that there should be other factors I should be using to determine which distro to use.

    Trouble with connecting to wifi

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:24 AM PST

Hi, so I just installed linux and are having trouble connecting to the internet. The OS doesn't recognize my wi-fi adapter/card, and I'm too far away from the router to use ethernet. My card is recognized as Broadcom Limited BCM4360 802.11ac. I've transferred the driver from a USB onto my disk, but cant seem to find the INSTALL file. Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers :)

How does RHEL versions and kernel versions inter-operate?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:51 AM PST

I'm a bit confused with the kernel compatibilities with the various RHEL versions. Wikipedia lists the following:

    • 7.3, also termed Update 3, November 3, 2016; 2 years ago
      • kernel kernel 3.10.0-514
    • 7.6, also termed Update 6, October 30, 2018; 2 months ago
      • kernel 3.10.0-957

Does this mean that if kernel version 3.10.0-957 is present, then it is automatically assumed to be RHEL 7.6? Would it be possible, for example, RHEL 7.3 to run kernel 3.10.0-957 (and still technically remain RHEL version 7.3)

Occasionally get scratchy, distorted sound using speakers but never do using Bluetooth audio output.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:42 AM PST

I am running Linux Mint 19.1 on a newer Dell XPS tower, but I have had this problem on other distros. Essentially, after a few minutes to maybe an hour or listening through my speakers, the audio becomes ungodly staticy and distorted. It usually helps to turn the speakers on and off, or pause the audio for a while.

This was not a problem while I was running Windows, so I don't think it is a problem with the speakers. I'm not entirely sure what audio software is default on Mint, but that is what I am using.
