Laptops Which laptop should I choose?

Laptops Which laptop should I choose?

    Which laptop should I choose?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:10 AM PST

-Staying in Singapore. Also, must receive laptop before 14th Feb, so I may not able to wait for other laptops to release in my area.

-This laptop will be both my desktop replacement and school laptop.

-I would like a laptop that is capable of 1080p gaming, something like GTX1060, but with RTX2060 out and there wasn't any "deals" in my area for GTX1060, I'd rather spend a few hundred more for the latest graphics card.

-Under 2.5kg for 15 inch, or slightly heavier for 17 inch

-Battery life above 70Wh as I do not really want to bring my charger around.

    -Login with biometrics.

These 2 are currently available in my area, both around $3500 SGD (~$2600USD)

    1. Microsoft surface book 2

This laptop seems perfect for school work with the aspect ratio, touch screen, pen, and is capable of 1080p gaming to a certain playable extent. Hesitant to buy because RTX cards are released and this thing (3 years old?) still costs as much as the newly released Razer Blade 15 (RTX 2060).

    1. Razer Blade 15 RTX 2060

I've been looking for rtx 2060 laptops since the release @29th Jan and Razer Blade is the only laptop with RTX graphics in stock in my area. I heard many things about razer being "not that reliable". Not sure if this laptop could last me at least 3 years.

I know its severely overpriced here but I guess I don't have much of a choice. It would be great if I could get some other recommendations, that is if the release date is before 14th Feb in my area.

Huawei MateBook D 14" missing feature

Huawei MateBook D 14" missing feature

Posting this as a warning to people out there interested in the Huawei MateBook D 14".

The one I purchased is specifically the signature edition.

Amazing value for the specifications but be warned, as you can see in the attached picture its supposed to come with a fingerprint sensor. That is not case. I called customer support and the support representative told me its not supposed to have one and that the one that does is their most expensive model. She told me I can see for myself on their website, all I can see is a promise of fingerprint sensors that isn't there.

I'm not going to be returning it because I can't afford to wait for a new one to arrive but I figured I'd save someone else the trouble.

Good luck out there if you're still researching!

Dog peed on laptop, won't turn on.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:07 AM PST

I have an hp ENVY and a couple days ago I assume while I was out of the house my dog peed on my laptop. By the time I had come back home it seemed to have all dried. It was closed and he only peed on one of the corners. It originally turned on but made me do these I think it was a hard drive test and I did those but it wouldn't let me exit out of it. I closed the laptop and now it won't turn on at all. I know people can fix water damage to laptops but I'm not sure about urine. My late brother bought it for £1000 and I know he would be absolutely fuming right now, and I'm pretty annoyed about it as it's the only laptop in our house and I'm still a student so I obviously have work to do. It has warranty on it for the next 3 ish weeks but it doesnt cover urine damage. I don't work so I obviously have no money and my mother is pretty reluctant to have it fixed even if someone could fix it since she blames it on me and my sisters. Do you think there would be anyone that could fix it?

Can Anyone Help Me Find A Laptop Like This?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:30 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding a laptop. It'd need the following,:

    1. 17" display
    2. GTX 1060 6GB GPU
    3. 2TB HDD
    4. 128 or 256 GB SSD
    5. i7 7th or 8th generation CPU
    6. 16GB RAM (DDR4)
    7. A Fan that doesn't absolutely blow up (it can be loud, just not "the spaceship is about to blast off loud, like the overpowered Walmart laptops)
    8. USB's (3.0 and 2.0)
    9. Microphone Jack
    10. Good Battery
    11. Below 10lbs.
    12. HDMI
    13. Good Keyboard (RGB if possible
    14. (If Possible, something below $1300, I know these part's are expensive on retailer sites, so maybe something on eBay could be cheaper?)

If there is anything I am missing, please let me know. I have tried looking for laptops with the same specs everywhere, but for the life of me, can not find them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

HP Envy 13" 2018 Battery Issue

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:16 AM PST

I recently bought a HP Envy 13" 2018 and the battery life is nowhere close to what I've seen in reviews.

    https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/ultraportable-laptops-ultrabooks/hp-envy-13-2018-3683639

This review states 8 hours 57 minutes of 720p video at 75% brightness with presumably the keyboard back light left on.

    https://bigtechquestion.com/2018/07/23/review/hp-envy-13-review-2018/

This review states 7 hours of looping video but without details of the resolution or brightness.

I'm only getting 4 hours while sat on the desktop doing nothing at 50% brightness with the keyboard back light turned off and even less when I start doing anything else.

    Some details:

I have WiFi turned on and I'm connected 100% of the time.

All the windows updates are installed

    Here's all the processes running:

    https://imgur.com/a/NC3o418

In my system tray, excluding the standard windows stuff, I have MSI Afterburner, NVIDIA Settings, Lightshot and RivaTuner Statistics Server

I'm not really sure what to do to fix it.

    Specs:

    i5 8250u

    8GB 2133MHz DDR3 RAM

    NVIDIA MX150 256GB SSD

    The screen is 1080p @ 60Hz

    There's a 128GB Micro SD Card inserted

    Just bought a Yoga 730

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:39 PM PST

I am a college student and recently bought a Yoga 730. I've had it for only a week and am already having problems with it. First problem I noticed is the battery life. For example, when I using Microsoft word the battery falls about 20% in a time of about 30min. Also another problem I came across today is when I go to charge my laptop, it won't charge. All it says is that it is plugged in and not charging. Anyone have these problems or know of solutions to fix these. Thank you.

Old laptop, will it do the job ?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:35 AM PST

    Hello,

Lately I've been consistenly shooting and editing photos on my dad's computer. Lightroom is nearly unbearably slow so maybe the time for me to buy my own computer has come. I have a very low budget and don't want to spend a lot on it anyway, I prefer to save for lenses and trips instead.

Someone in my town is selling this guy here (16gb not 32) and although it is fairly old, the specs seem fine and they're asking 250€.

Do you think that it can do the job ? Would you point me to other options (new) ?

    Thanks

    HP Pavilion Overheating?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:01 AM PST

    Hey all!

So I have an HP Pavilion 15-p000 series Notebook and for the past couple years it's been sitting at the bottom of the shelf due to an overheating issue. I thought I'd take to reddit, and hope I'd get some answers and help.

My mother used to use it for work purposes, so it was littered with all the customer support essentials before it fell into my hands. I never really removed those, as she wasn't sure if she'd return to work, so I just worked around it playing games and just everyday use.

After a while, it'd begin overheating and shut down automatically. After this started happening more frequently, I put it away for a good long while.

Every now and then I'd mess with it to see what I can do to fix it. At this point, it'll stay on long enough for me to attempt to factory reset it. Once, it was almost finished resetting when it overheated and shut down. The battery was not too hot, but it was still hot enough. The fan goes insane, but I've cleaned that as much as I possibly can.

What can I do? Do I need a new battery? How much would a repair cost for a special edition pavilion?

I need help on buying a laptop between £400 and £600, any assistance would be very much appreciated (needs in description)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:59 AM PST

I won't repeat the title so I'll list the needs of what I need this laptop to do and have below. As mentioned though, any help on this is extremely appreciated as there's not much out there to help consumers in this price range!

    Needs:

    • Lightweight
    • Screen Size - 14" (around about but not smaller)
    • Durable
    • No CD or HDD, just SSD storage
    • Quick
    • Capable of the following: Writing (that's my profession!). Watching YouTube vids etc. Very light editing (Vegas/Audacity) Plays games (nothing above Magic The Gathering:
      Arena and Hearthstone)
    • Great touchpad and 'clicky' keyboard which is well spaced
    • Decent battery life

I think those are the main ones.

I don't need touchscreen/2in1s/Amazing Webcam. Just a laptop that is indeed a laptop!

Links would be appreciated and happy for second hand ones as well which come with warranty.

    Happy hunting you beautiful people!

Tips on how not to get shocked every time I touch my laptop?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:38 AM PST

I live in a house with carpets. Add the dry winter air and I'm equipped with a good charge of static electricity just from going to the kitchen and back. I noticed every time I touch a light switch I feel a little shock going on as well. Are there any grounding products I can buy so when I return to my laptop I don't get shocked? I just moved here and notice almost anything that can carry a build-up certainly does. If I could return to my laptop and touch something first I think I would appreciate that. Any suggestions or input is appreciated! Thanks.

Need Help in deciding a computer

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:10 AM PST

    Quality Laptop. Affordable price.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:38 AM PST

Hey guys, I hope I'm in the right place. So I need to get a laptop. I obviously don't want to go crazy and have set myself a budget. I'm wanting to spend no more than $300. What I need it for is as follows... Kids homeschool lessons, writing books (I love to write and am considering publishing), likely kids will play Minecraft as well... Just the basic things stated above. I would like one that is capable of keeping up with high speed internet ( I know, but certain devices just aren't up to date and act slow) so yeah this is the basics. Any advice?

Upgrading to Aero 15 (or similar) after my MSI GE62 failed.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:16 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I've just started a photography business and my MSI GE62-2QD has had either a CPU or mobo failure just after its third birthday (not happy.)

I was very impressed with the IPS screen on that machine and I'm looking for a good, modern alternative. I'm totally open to suggestions, like the Blade 15, XPS 15, Aero 15 or another MSI. I'm interested in what sort of service manufacturers may offer and if anyone has any experiences with their similar machines.

A trip to my local PC store proved that MSI can be funny with their screen, not all are IPS, or run remotely close to a good sRGB coverage and their advertising of "wide view" make me skeptical of which ones actually have a good screen for side/up/down angles.

I also dabble in 3D design and gaming, but not nearly as much as photo/video editing.

Any opinions or help is appreciated, if it helps, I'm in Australia for anyone who may be able to provide more local advice, thanks! :)

13 2-in-1 Laptops to Choose From. Thoughts?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:07 PM PST

Posted this at /r/SuggestALaptop. Hoping for input here is as well.

I really can't decide and I've been talking myself in circles. Thank you for any thoughts.

☆ Total budget and country of purchase: ☆

    • ~$800, preferably lower. I may bite the bullet and invest in higher though it'd really financially hurt. Thoughts on refurbished or used eBay purchasing? Worth it or stick to new? Hopefully something exists in the price range for what I'm looking for.

    • USA

☆ Do you prefer a 2-in-1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. ☆

    • All across the board. I need speed, space, high performance and functionality. I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15 1558 and it's crushing my productive soul to oblivion (I'm typing this on my phone).

    • I'm looking for a multi-use laptop where I can (not in order of importance): do web and graphic design, watch Netflix without lag, take it on the go as I move around a lot (light-weight would be nice for this), be able to write articles and blogs while having multiple (sometimes many, many) webpages open for reference and research, perhaps use Illustrator (a 2-in-1 would be nice for this purpose, as well as for tutoring purposes--think digital white board), handle various software relevant to my consulting job, and light gaming via Steam (think Kotor and Slime Rancher type of games) though this is more of a desire and not a necessity.

    • It would be nice if the computer could handle some of these tasks running simultaneously (eg Illustrator and also other potentially large software, or also Slime Rancher, or also Netflix).

☆ How important is weight and thinness to you? ☆

    • Lightweight would be nice as I am often on the move. Preferably under 4 lb though I'm open to heavier if you think it'll be a perfect match.

    • Thinness would be nice but I'm not attached to the idea.

☆ Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. ☆

    • Windows preferable.

☆ Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ☆

    • I've always used 15.6" as the more screen the better, but I'm thinking it may be better to go for a 13.3" or 14" for portability, weight, and price. But I do love that screen real estate. Thoughts in accordance to my uses?

    • Also I'm thinking perhaps (if smaller is best) I'll get a 13.3" or 14" and a light 15.6" touchscreen portable monitor to accompany it. That would definitely solve the feeling of cramped space for drawing, designing, multitasking, or typing on one screen with research on the other. Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

☆ Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? ☆

    • Reliable--able to last years.

    • At least 256gb SSD.

    • At least 8gb.

    • Comfortable keyboard--typing will probably be the main use. Though perhaps I can buy an external keyboard if I'm not in love with the original.

    • Excellent pen sensitivity would be wonderful (hopefully without palm sensitivity).

    • At least 8th gen i5 processor. Do you think that or the 8th gen i7 would be best suited for me?

    • A quality webcam for business calls would be nice though I do have the Logitech C920 so that isn't entirely a dealbreaker.

☆ Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. ☆

    • I read that many people suggest the Lenovo Yoga 720. I found a refurbished one that upgraded the 256gb to 512gb. Refurbished makes me nervous but is it potentially worth it or too risky? It says certified and I also read "manufacturer refurbished."

    • I played with a Yoga 730 as a reference to the 720 at Bestbuy (they didn't have a 720 on display) and felt that it was a bit flimsy. Is this just first impression and it's actually a very powerful system/hardware (that shouldn't be underestimated)?

    • I also played with the HP Spectre x360 Gem Cut and fell in love with its eye-candy appearance and unusual cut. Though this is a much higher price point.

    • I also enjoyed the 2-in-1 Asus products as well though they are usually more pricey and I have read hit or miss reviews.

    • I'm open to other options as well! I welcome whatever you think would be best for my needs. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much for taking your time to read this and help me out. Any and all advice would be so deeply appreciated! All the best. ♡

    • proper RGB colour?? idk how to explain but the colours on my laptop are odd in a way where when i transfer my art to my phone for example, the colours are waaay off

    • I play games like guild wars 2 and elder scrolls online n it'd be nice to play without lag ///

    • would like a fairly decent screen size but also portability since I may take it places so can compromise screen size for easy portability
