Experiment: Windows 10 Pro vs Home vs 8.1 with Bing on supercheap tablet.

    Hello Reddit Windows!

This has been an interesting experiment for me so far, I will share it with you and take any suggestions you have.

I managed to get Windows 10 Pro installed with all proper drivers on my shady&cheap IVIEW i800qw Windows Tablet.

It's extremely slower than the stock Win8.1+Bing it shipped with and I wonder if Win10 Home might run better?

However, battery life at idle has increased from about maybe 6-8 hours to several days! (Screen locked and off, but device not powered down)

I installed 32bit by the way, same as shipped stock.

The thing has a Quad-core Atom Z3something processor and 1Gb of RAM. I know that's extremely short on RAM but the experience was acceptable out-of-the-box. Now it's a pain to try to use it. No worries though, I can restore my Windows Image Backup if there is no solution.

I removed SOME components from the Windows image using NTLite before installing it but it seemed there was not much to be saved using the free version, did I miss something?

My next step is to do the same with Windows 10 Home and see if that runs better. The ONLY thing I wanted from Pro anyway was to access the Tablet via RDP, but I found a solution to that.

For any who might want to undertake a similar project, I only had two difficulties that become easy when you know the solution. For those who don't, the following is probably of no interest, do not hesitate to not read.

1: The drivers are not all included with Windows and the manufacturer does not supply them.

I resolved that by extracting the drivers from the stock Windows 8.1 installation. I had made a Windows Image Backup before beginning (I suggest you do too.) and had to restore it in order to do that. Tedious, but I was glad I took the precaution.

On your stock Windows 8.1 install, run an elevated command prompt and run the following:

    DISM /online /export-driver /destination:"X:\FOLDER_PATH_OF_YOUR_CHOICE"

The folder path in question must already exist, the command will not offer to create it, it will just say the path does not exist and fail... Also the X: is actually whatever drive you happen to choose of course.

This will extract all your current drivers in the folder in question, in their respective subfolders.

When we reach the point of installing the missing or generic drivers after installing Windows 10, we can just choose to locate the drivers ourselves instead of letting Windows find them, and point it to FOLDER_OF_YOUR_CHOICE and make sure the "Include subfolders" checkbox is checked, it all went smoothly for me.

2: Screen rotation would not work, and once it did, it didn't work correctly.

All the necessary solutions were found on this blog post:

    https://samuelpinches.com.au/blab/windows-10-screen-rotation-problem-kionix-registry-fix/

I have kept the files involved in case this blog ever goes down. You should grab the driver and registry files in advance to let everything go smoothly from here.

By now it is necessary to find a way to connect Keyboard, Mouse (although you can do without it if you're a Windows 9x OG ;) ) and a USB key to your device all at the same time because Touch will not work during or right after installation until we load the drivers we previously extracted. In my case I used a powered USB hub and the supplied USB OTG adapter.

You should also fully charge the battery before beginning because in my case and probably most, the tablet was depleting its battery during the process even though the USB hub was powered, this is probably normal, and there possibly exist "power injectors" for USB OTGs for cases like this. I did not need one although it would have made this better.

Please make a Windows Image Backup now in case anything fails.

Windows 8.1 was giving me weird failure messages when I tried backing this up on a SD card. It completed but gave me error messages during the process so I wasn't sure if I could trust the resulting file... When I tried again with a hard disk with a usb adapter instead, it worked properly. I suppose a USB key should be fine too. I your device does not have a full-size USB female port, you will need a USB OTG adapter. Iview surprisingly supplied one with my tablet so I was good to go.

Make a Windows Installation Media (USB key is most common) using the official Windows Media Creation Tool.

Boot on the USB key, on the Iview tablet this involved pressing F7 during boot.

    Follow normal Windows installation procedure.

Once Windows was done installing, touch screen and rotation did not work, sd card reader didn't work either.

Now is the time to go to Device Manager, find all the missing drivers, and update them with the ones we extracted previously.

In my case I also had to update drivers that were not showing up as missing. It was tedious going through the whole list and updating drivers, many times I got the answer that the best drivers were already installed but I patiently went through the whole list anyway. I think most of the drivers that ended up being updated were in the "System Devices" group. It was the case for the processor, camera sensor, and many other things.

Once that was all done touch screen was working but not rotation.

See solution 2: above. After installing the drivers the screen rotation was not rotating properly. The registry files in the blog post resolved that. The one that worked for me was "07-90Degree.reg"

Then everything was up and running... walking... crawling... very slowly, but properly I guess...

I'm not used to such writeups so sorry if the form is poor, your input is appreciated.

Does anyone know how to fix the 100% disk usage problem in Windows 10? This happens when the PC is booted and causes games to freeze.

    Can't hide updates

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:17 AM PST

    Win 8.1 Pro | x64

Before (few months ago), when I right-clicked an update and hid it, it would never come back when searching for new updates. Now, I hide updates and the same stuff keep coming back all over again.

Is there anything I could do to change this behaviour?

As a default maximize all newly-opened windows

Is there a way to configure Windows so that each time a new window is opened, it is maximized? Each time I do something that opens a window, I maximize it next.

    Windows 7 Startup Programs

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:39 PM PST

I'm running Windows 7 SP1, and I've disabled all the programs I don't want to run on startup in msconfig. However, there is one program that keeps giving itself permission to run on startup, ie. it is creating new entries for itself in msconfig, and disabling these additional entries doesn't do anything, as when I cut off one head, another pops up in its place. Anyone know how to stop this?

    Failover Cluster with dynamic witness

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:37 AM PST

As known if 50% of nodes in cluster with dynamic quorum fails simultaneously - cluster stops working. Because cluster needs time to recalculate votes. But what about cluster with dynamic witness?

It runs perfectly with only windows 10that has 2016 or later updates, but I wanted to use windows 8. What can I do? Is it because of DirectX? Please help

So i my motherboard broke whichs mean i have to activate windows again on my new motherboard, i do not wish to spend around £50 so will be buying a key off ebay. the problem is the listings say something along the lines of

' This key will not let you upgrade from Windowos 7/8, fresh install only'

but im not doing a frewsh install, just reactivating it.

will one of these keys work on just reactivating windows?

Installed Windows 7 (for and old laptop) after many years of using Windows 10 and was amazed by the speed.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:40 AM PST

With all the Windows 10 issues, bugs, speed problems, Windows 7 seems like a dream, its so sleek, fast and no frills windows, even on very old pc´s.

I was using it on a Core i3-2330M with 4GB of RAM with a regular HDD and the speed was just amazing!

Is there a tuned version of Windows 10 stripped of all nonsense and bloat and configured for speed over there? Made by some windows tinkerer?

    Thanks!
