Don’t get caught up in the hype when building

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:04 PM PST

I just feel that I should share a bit of personal advice since it's what I went through.

The process of building a new pc and choosing all the expensive / inexpensive new parts can be amazing but I realized you shouldn't get caught in the things that are over hyped and instead on things of what you want to do.

Last 5 years as been me wanting to choose the fastest and best parts for a pc, Saving up money, and eventually grabbing the parts only in time for their newer counterparts to be released.

For example, when the 6700k came out and the 1080, and so fourth.

I would get the best card and cpu and then realize that the games that were hyped weren't even games I was interested in. I would spend all my time playing rocket league and I wasted $1100 for no reason when you could get away with a $200 card.

Fast forward, I sold it some time later.

Got caught back up in the hype and then bought the next fastest card. 1080 Ti.

This time I was sure I was going to play the best games and enjoy them. Of course after about a month I got bored and same cycle continued.

    Got rid of the card,

Got caught in hype, got the 2080, same cycle.

Now I have the opportunity to get possibly the best setup possible with a 2080 Ti but I finally learned that you should not do things just because they are overhyped and instead do what you actually enjoy.

Now I bought a cheap 1050 Ti, and I'm enjoying my competitive and fun games I actually want to play.

TL;DR: Don't waste money on expensive cards just because their overhyped. Nothing is wrong with playing on lower than max settings, the game is fun if you enjoy it.

Got sick while building, PC might be a biohazard now.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:35 AM PST

I had c. diff. I did not know I had it until my nasty hands had already touched everything and built the pc. C. diff leaves spores that I can reinfect myself with and alcohol does not kill the spores.

Am I stuck with those spores or is there anything that can kill them and not kill the pc as well? My biggest concern is more so fans and such moving those spores outside the case.

The case is NZXT H500 and all the fan slots (x4) on it occupied.

Update: Thanks for all the ideas I'll start looking into things like the HEPA filters

Package left outside for multiple days with temps getting below zero

So my m.2 ssd drive was left outside for a few days in very low temps because the delivery guy put it in my mailbox instead of dropping it off inside. Will it be okay? Or should I order a new one?

    Opninions on new build

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:44 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking to build my second PC and have been looking around for parts, it'll be my first AMD build so there could be something I missed. Here is the list, prices will be a little different for me (I live in The Netherlands). I'll use it mostly for games like R6 and bfV, but will also be using it for some light projects in CAD (solidworks mainly). If you have any ideas on improvements or things I should know about, please leave a comment :)

EDIT: I should have mentioned I already own the 970 Evo and the RM650x

Pc freezing for 5 seconds occasionally

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:44 PM PST

Hey, this started maybe a month ago, maybe twice a day the pc freezes for about 5 seconds (and the sound feels like a blue screen), first when it happened i lost voice chat functionality on discord, but i've had it happen without discord running.

The variables i've added were nvidia freesync (which i've disabled and still got freezes), an old hard drive with Sata 1 connector with a mac OS install, i did make some bios changes when i installed Mac OS, but i've reset bios to default and applied my usual overclock, and switched my keyboard cable with a braided one i bought from ali express.

I've also DDU'd the video drivers...

Can the old hard drive be causing this issue (windows doesn't even mount the mac hdd)? What else could cause this?

Here's my userbenchmark for specs and such...

    Thanks in advance

    RTX 2060 Worth it!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:21 AM PST

There has constantly been a lot of hate over the RTX 2060 in its lack of vram and its price and everything, but all I've gotta say is it's a beautiful card and it runs quiet and it allows me to do everything I want to do!!

Super glad I pulled the trigger on it! Also NVENC encoding imo seems better than my x264 encoding! Very happy with my decision.

Edit: I got the Nvidia FE btw

Want to upgrade to a 144 hz monitor and need help

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:45 AM PST

    Hery everybody,

As the title says I want to upgrade to a 144 hz monitor but have absolutely no idea on which one to buy. Can't spend too much on it (300 is the absolute max I can afford). I mostly want a 1080p, 24 inch monitor.

I have an i7 7700k and a 1070 ti, which makes me think I can push most competitive games to 144+ fps.

The ones I have my eyes on are:

https://www.amazon.com/1080p-Gaming-LED-Lit-Monitor-VG278Q/dp/B074JLD4HZ/ref=sr_1_9?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1548952785&sr=1-9&keywords=144hz+monitor (27 inches is too big I believe, and the price is too close to my max limit)

    https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-Response-Equalizer-Vibrance-Adjustable/dp/B01H5KKQTM/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1548952785&sr=1-7&keywords=144hz+monitor

    https://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-XG2402-FreeSync-Advanced-Ergonomics/dp/B075D1B4SV/ref=sr_1_12?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1548952785&sr=1-12&keywords=144hz+monitor

I don't know how important G-Sync really is, but anything you can recommend will be much appreciated.

    Is an i7 8700 more future proof than a i5 9600K?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:11 AM PST

I'm upgrading my PC and I'm in doubt here. My aim is mainly for gaming and maybe 720p streaming for friends. The i7 is a bit more expensive but I am unsure if it's worth the extra bucks over the i5.

    What are your thoughts?

Picking out a case for my build. Any red flags I should know?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:50 AM PST

Oh learned sages of pc building, please enlighten a first timer here on anything egregious I should know about the cases I've narrowed my selection down to.

The parts I've picked out are the following:

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
    • GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ AMD Rx580 8GB
    • RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2933
    • SSD: Crucial P1 1TB PCIe
    • Mobo: ASRock x470 Taichi (not ultimate)
    • PSU: TBD, but it looks like a 600W-650W one would be needed in the event I decide to throw in a couple other harddrives in the future.

And the cases I've narrowed down to (ranked):

    1. NZXT H500
    2. LIAN LI PC-O11
    3. Fractal Design Meshify C
    4. In Win 101
    5. Corsair Crystal 570X RGB

I'm going to do more research over the weekend to pick out the features I prefer and issues I'd like to avoid (like how the glass on the Corsair 275R is mounted - took it off my list for that), but given the components that I've selected and the fact I may set up a custom water cooling loop this summer because it looks fun, is there anything particularly important or concerning that I should know pertaining to these cases I've selected?

Also, I may be open to choosing an upgraded version of one of these cases, but I'd prefer to not go above $300 CAD for this, considering the cost of the other parts I've chosen.

    Thanks a bunch!

    Edit: ranked my choices

Recommendations for an affordable gaming chair?

To make the switch or don't to make it... Help me decide! Xeon to ryzen?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:28 PM PST

I currently have an x5670 clocked at 4.4 ghz with ht on that has given me very good times and honestly I don't think it is holding me up regarding performance.

Even if it not holding me back in gaming it is true that it lacks proper sata 3 and USB 3.0 and its only a matter of time before this platform truly dies. I have heard that due to missing instructions to newer games this will perform worse that newer architectures. Another thing that makes me want to make the switch is that I got a 144 hz monitor so I should be able to get better average fps with the switch I think...

So from time to time I look for good deals to make the switch.

I have found one that may satisfy my needs and give me room for updates in the future. It is a ryzen 1700x with a msi b350m pro-vdh that only comes with 4gb of ram so I would have to add 4 gb for at least 30-40 €. I would be 250€ euros for the whole package.

I don't have intention for overclocking so I think that motherboard could be enough and maybe even for the future ryzen 3 as the tdp should only go down with those new cpus.

What do you think? Should I take it?

New build is slower than 4 year old build. Help speeding it up?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:25 PM PST

I recently finished a new build. I noticed it was actually booting slower than my first build. I got some help figuring out how to speed that up in BIOS by enabling 4x on the nvme boot drive, but its still not any faster.

I've noticed my games also boot slower. I really don't know why this is happening given that every component should be a small but noticeable upgrade on performance rather than a very noticeable DOWNGRADE, right?

Boot time from off state in old build: 14 seconds. New build: 16 seconds. Game boot times are seconds longer in the new build. There's a noticeably longer period between running a game and it actually starting. Even Discord takes longer to launch.

    Old Build:

    • CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz

    • RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3 1866

    • SSD(boot): Samsung 850 EVO

    • GPU: EVGA 980 ti

    • MOBO: GA-Z97X-Gaming 7

    • PSU: Corsair RM 850

    • OS: Windows 7

    New Build:

    • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K 3.7Gz

    • RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z RGB DDR4 3200 C16 2x8GB

    • SSD(boot): Samsung 970 EVO NVMe M.2

    • GPU: RTX 2080ti

    • MOBO: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E Gaming

    • PSU: EVGA Supernova 750 G3, 80 Plus Gold 750W

    • OS: Windows 10

As far as I know I've set up everything in BIOS to get the NVME drive to run as fast as its capable. Are there settings in Windows 10 I don't know about that could be hampering performance on startup. Or that could be causing the slowdown of game boot times?

    Black Screen after reboot

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:08 PM PST

I just recently bought a R9 380 Gaming. i installed it a few days ago and its been working fine up until today. For some reason after every time i turn it off it seems to "forget" the drivers because when it gboots it goes through the bios flash screen, the windows startup screen then it goes black. i can then swap to the onboard graphics (a10-7850k graphics) and uninstall the graphics driver (via the amd driver installer) and reinstall (after i uninstall i am able to swap back to the graphics card and it uses the "default" windows drivers). i am able to use the gpu to its full potential afterwards (rainbow six siege and such).

anything at this point would help! thank you

It's our first time building, so does anyone see anything that can be improved or have any advice/counsel? (or see any embarrassing fatal flaws)

for resolution, 1080p is wonderful, but if we have room in the budget more seems like better.

Different ways to clean a PC?

It's Tax Refund season! How did I do?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 03:56 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming! That's literally all I do with my PC.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to be able to game comfortably on the new monitor. I'm not overly concerned with FPS -- if I could get a steady 60 frames at 1440p I'd be happy. I am typically behind the AAA curve by a year or more because I wait for sales -- but this year I want to be ready for Cyberpunk 2077. I want to hit High settings but most of the games I play right now (i.e. League of Legends, The Division, Prey, Fallout 4, Divinity: Original Sin) probably would not be very demanding for this build.

Hitting stable performance in PUBG would be a bonus but again, I don't play it enough for that to be worth the extra $$$. I generally prefer single player RPGs.

I'm also considering jumping into VR but that will probably be later on in the year.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Components ~$1200 - $1400 Monitor ~$500

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Message: "Some Intel Z370 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Coffee Lake Refresh CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions."

Anyone know if this means it'll work.

    Re-Installing CPU help

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:31 AM PST

I got all the parts for my new build 2 weeks ago, however, after i built it and was testing it - it seemed the motherboard i received was faulty.

I had to RMA it - and so i had to take out the CPU.

Now that I have a new and hopefully working motherboard, what steps should I take when reinstalling my CPU?

Many people say to using Isopropyl Alcohol to rub off the old thermal compound and apply new. Is this still necessary if it was only installed for a few hours?

    Thanks!

Got a bonus from work. Looking for some upgrade recommendations

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:17 AM PST

    Hi All,

I received a bonus from my job & have ~$1K to spend on upgrading my PC. My GPU is brand new (I have a 1080 ti), but it's been a long time since I upgraded my CPU, mobo & RAM. Here are some questions:

    • Can you recommend a CPU socket type? I'm looking to stay with Intel. I want something modern but not bleeding edge & with a good amount of quality, compatible mobos to choose from. This is what I'm upgrading from:
    • Can you also recommend a decent mobo? Is having built-in bluetooth a thing nowadays? USB blutooth adapters seem to generally be ass. This is what I'm upgrading from
    • RAM. Is there any real reason to go above 16GB for a Win10 gaming build? What speed would provide the best performance for my dollar? This is what I currently have

My power supply is 750w. My system runs fine currently, so I can't imagine that replacing the chip, board & RAM would put all that much additional load on it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You've also got an unused 16gb of DDR4-3000 and an Asus Z170 Pro Gaming MOBO sitting around that don't fit into your current build, because you're a freaking idiot that didn't check to see if your motherboard could take DDR4, and then bought a new motherboard that could take it but you didn't confirm that your processor fit it. Then you gave up.

You also game regularly and plan on purchasing a VR headset with the money too (you're leaning towards the Oculus Rift because of the bang for your buck). Of course, in purchasing a Rift, you're only leaving yourself with around $675. But you might keep justifying slipping a little more money to yourself for this project. After all, rent isn't due for a whole month.

Initially you were planning on getting a RTX 2060/2070, but lately you've been reading a fair amount of opinion recommending against that. You ask yourself, "Is it worth the cost? Would that money be better spent on upgrading my processor, which would enable me to use that RAM and MOBO I have sitting around?" But no one answers.

    Buying a 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:49 AM PST

Not sure if right sub, but is it worth for me to get a 144hz monitor? I saw a used one for about 150$ and brand new goes for 300$+.

My PC currently does not get constant 144fps on games like Fortnite, so is it even worth it for me?

I watch videos a lot/work on my PC, as well as play some CSGO where I get 144fps.

Would it be a problem to play if my Fps drops to 90-120? Or should I just change the hz of the monitor to like 90-120 if thats possible?

Thank you a lot in advance. I also plan to upgrade my PC soon to get better fps
