    Simple Questions - December 01, 2018

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Nephew reacting to first boot (update)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:50 AM PST

I posted this yesterday and enough people in the comments asked me to post an update.

This is a video chat recording, hence the poor quality. It was kinda last minute but I hope it's good enough.

Anyway, I recorded for quite a bit but I picked this moment cuz when my nephew turned on the tower for the first time it seemed like the thought of having his own custom made PC sunk in. My favorite part was his question at the end.

His reaction reminded me what it was like when I built my first PC. Not gonna lie I got a little nostalgic :)

    Here's the video

I brought back to life a $10 Deseret Industries desktop! (I still need your input!)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:06 AM PST

I made a sporadic random decision to stop by my local DI as it had been years. Lots of nostalgic stuff there from the 90's that's for sure. Among the ancient monitors and stereo hardware, lied a few desktops shoved in the corner. One stood out to me with a sticker that said "for parts use". I opened the case to find this little gem

Nothing was altered, so i powered it up in the store with an old monitor nearby. Bios confirmed all the hardware was still there, and it booted right into windows 7!

Bought it and took it straight home. 10 Dollars!!! Inner nerd coming out! I had been wanting to build a computer for years now, just never really had the extra cash to do a full build.

My old existing computer is (laugh with me) a compaq presario amd athlon x2 64 dual core with 1GB ram. I had since added a 128 SSD, 1GB 6670, and 500w PSU. It was still chugging along.

I immediately took the SSD and installed it into the DI 10$ special as primary boot drive with a fresh copy of windows. So far so good. Added the 6670 and PSU, I was albeit, a bit underwhelmed by its graphical performance. It did play games much better than the compaq in comparison, likely due to the better RAM and CPU.

I hopped onto my local classifieds (KSL) and found an EVGA 1060 6GB for $180!. Better yet, he was 5 minutes from me. I didn't measure dimensions as it is a big dual fan, just crossed fingers it would fit into the DI 10$ special. Low and behold it did! With one issue. The 500W PSU I had didn't have an 8-pin pci-e, only a 6.

Good ol classifieds came through a second time in the same evening: I found a modular 600W Ocz PSU with the proper 8-pin I needed for $50, it was in box never used. This person was also only within 5 minutes of me! Score!

Fired my 10$ computer up with the recent additions and it ran Rocket League in 4K at 70-90 FPS. Victory!

Here is where I need YOUR input. The only other thing I want to do to this system is upgrade the CPU. Currently it has the Pentium G620 2.6Ghz dual core. I read up that this is the same socket as the i5 3570 and the i7 3770. Any concerns with this? I heard the biggest issue will be updating the bios for it to work. I was going to chance an eBay used CPU. What are your thoughts??

    Thanks for reading!!

    *****TL, DR:

    —10$ Lenovo Desktop from DI

    —180$ lightly used EVGA 1060 6GB

—50$ new modular 600W Ocz PSU

    Total cost: $240.00

First time building a PC for myself, and I want it to be my dream build (3k budget). Any suggestions?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:33 PM PST

    Hey all!

I'm a long time PC gamer but I've only ever had gaming laptops since I've been moving around a lot. Now that I'm finally settled into an area and have a good job, I want to build the desktop I've always been dreaming of - a micro ATX powerhouse. Since this is my first time doing this on my own and this is a lot of money, I'd love for you guys to help me decide if there's any parts I'm missing or should consider swapping.

    Here's the list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Pacman75/saved/CCFr6h

Thank you in advance! Much love!

Trying to build a gaming PC. Original budget was 800 but will go no more than 900 USD. Pls give advice on my build

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:23 AM PST

This is the build I put together. I have a monitor already btw. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NYxXpG I'd like to cut costs anywhere I can without compromising reliability. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also, is this all I'd need to build a PC? A tool list would be great if anyone can put one together

    i5-9600k, buyers remorse

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:49 PM PST

Recently bought a i5-9600k to go with a RTX 2070 but am worried I should have gone with i7-9700k instead. I can still ask for a refund and buy the i7-9700k instead but it will cost $190 more but future proofing might be nice. I plan to keep it for at least ca 5 years. What should I do? Could it be worth it in the long run?

    Need custom PSU cables

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:07 PM PST

So I'm building a new rig and I plugged in the PsU and got so turned off by that big rope coming thru the case for the 24pin.

I need some new cables , but since I have a Corsair 570x I am thinking the extensions are not good , and instead should get the new plugs you actually put into the PsU?

The price difference is pretty big from what I saw on "CableMods"

Could you guys offer any insight and perhaps other brands I can purchase from

My desktop was exposed to smoke. Am I totally screwed?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:53 PM PST

Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit for this. I've been looking for answers all over the internet and come across various opinions.

Long story short: there was a fire at my house last week and my family and I are currently unable to live there. The damage was minimal (thank god) but the whole house and everything in it smells like smoke. I was in my room in the back of the house on my computer when the fire started (near the front of the house) and my family eventually noticed and told me we needed to get the hell out. I turned off my computer, grabbed my essentials, turned off the PSU, turned off my power strip, and ran out the house. By the time I left my room smoke had already been wafting down the hall.

We still need to wear a mask just to go inside because of how strong the smoke is. So I know that means there was a shit ton of smoke. But I have no idea how much this would have affected my desktop. Most of the situations I find online involve a computer that was already on with fans spinning when the smoke seeped in. Mine was completely off so I know there's a better chance but I'm still at a loss of what to do. And while the scent is everywhere and on the computer and I know obviously smoke got to it, I have no idea how much smoke got to it. Whether it was just enough for a strong scent or full on physical visibility so to speak.

Does anybody know which parts would have a better chance of being salvageable? Which ones I shouldn't even bother with? How I can make sure everything is okay? Or should I just chalk it up as a loss? :/ It's the first and only computer I've ever built and I put a lot of money (for a poor college student) and research into it, I remember browsing this sub for questions and to look at other people's builds too. I'm not very materialistic but...my desktop really means a lot to me. If anybody has gone through anything similar or is just far more knowledgeable about any of this than I am, please feel free to give me some direction.

    Thanks in advance r/buildapc community.

EDIT: The computer is out of the house currently and with me, I took it out last night. I haven't turned it on and was going to go to the store to get stuff to clean it but all the stuff I've read online was a bit disheartening to say the least. Figured I'd ask some opinions for my particular case just to be sure. I'm going back today to get my monitor but I feel less sure of saving that since I don't know how/if I can clean that.

Built my first PC a few months ago, made some upgrades to the CPU Cooler, an m.2 ssd and gpu. Now my CPU is on fire and idles at 60'C, any ideas on how I can improve this?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:20 PM PST

My CPU temps are 60'C at idle, previously it was 40'C at idle. Not sure what this issue could be.

I did double check my thermal paste and it appear good.

Ehm... I just installed Windows on my first ever gaming PC but my SSD shows up in the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media". Did I do something wrong?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:31 AM PST

As the title says yesterday I've installed my ssd with the help of some friends and once I installed Windows I right click the safely remove option and my ssd shows up there, which doesn't happen (afaik) on my laptop.

I have updated all drivers as far as I know.

    Did I fuck up?

I’m looking for 3-5 fans and a 5 port fan splitter for under $45.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:31 AM PST

I just put a Nitro+ RX 580 in my system and it currently hits 75C insanely quickly and then stabilizes by sounding like a jet engine. Another problem I have is my case where the RX 580 fans have around an inch of clearance against the power supply making airflow even worse.

My motherboard caps fan power at 25 Watts combined between the two ports(one is being used for CPU fan).

Also I'm looking for a way to configure my system fans to ramp up based on GPU temperature on my Gigabyte GA-AB350M-DS3H.

I'm currently thinking of getting these but am worried about the 25 Watt limit:

    Fans: https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-F12-PWM-PST-Technology/dp/B00NTUJTAK/

    Fan Splitter: https://www.amazon.com/SilverStone-System-Cables-Black-CPF04/dp/B00VNW556I/

I'm looking for the fans to be PWM because my motherboard supports both PWM and voltage control but the fan splitter only supports PWM.

Sorry for the formatting, I'm on mobile right now.

Can I use a freesync monitor with a gtx 1080 if I just turn off freesync?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:59 PM PST

I don't understand the point of gsync/freesync. Can't i just turn on vsync in the games settings to avoid screen tearing? I've watched lots of videos about this and still can't understand why you need gsync or freesync. Does the monitor not go above 60 hz if you don't turn on your respective "sync" option. I want a 144 or higher hz screen but I'm nervous about buying because I've bought 2 screens now that said 120hz on the box then through some technicality bs turned out to be 60hz.

120mm AIO vs AMD Stock Coolers?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:55 PM PST

Can anyone give some advice on this subject? I've tried to find some direct comparisons and I haven't been able to find anything. I've purchased a Series 1 Ryzen 5 chip second hand and have a friend that can get me any of the Ryzen stock coolers for a decent deal. However, I found a brand new 120mm AIO from EVGA that I can get for $10 more than the Wraith Prism, which seems to be a good deal at total cost. Am I looking at any performance increase or audible sound decrease with this decision? What difference in thermals am I looking at, if any? The RBG of the Prism is nice, but I would prefer the aesthetic of the CLC tubes, I already have some built in RGB with the case. I just am wondering if the CLC isn't worth the $10. It would be awesome if anyone could chime in.

First time builder! Questions on a few things.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:38 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/law123/saved/PQRbXL

*Is it worth to grab a better deal on my video card by purchasing in the used market?

*Is my wireless adapter good enough to play games in my college dorm?

*Is the build coherent? Are there parts I should change and others I should consider?

Just trying to save money in the process. Done decently so far with the deal hunting, but can't really buy things that offer Rebates because of my lack of access to letter stuff. Also planning on building during winter break (Basically Christmas through late January) so I have time for Christmas sales and stuff.

    Thanks!

Question about my case and PSU

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:15 PM PST

I have a Cougar MX330-G for my case right now and I was planning to pick up a Corsair CX550M as my power supply, but it looks like the SSD mounts on the case will conflict with the L-shaped SATA cables when I try to mount my SSD. Do I need to pick out a different PSU or should the L-shaped SATA fit without issue?

I just recently installed an SSD into my laptop and need help transferring Windows from my HDD to my SSD.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:27 AM PST

First off, If this is the wrong subreddit to post this I'm sorry. Tell me where to post it and I'll do it. I removed the CD drive out of my laptop and replaced it with an SSD. I have tried almost every online tutorial talking about how to transfer Windows to my new SSD. I have cloned my HDD to the SSD and tried booting from my SSD, but it's not showing in the boot menu. If you have an online tutorial that you know works or any advice, any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need anymore info or any clarification, let me know. I know I'm bad at explaining this.

Does Ryzen 7 2700x need thermal paste?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:21 AM PST

    PC Overhaul Temperature

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:53 PM PST

So I am upgrading a prebuilt my brother bought me for Christmas last year. Everything except the case, power supply and motherboard are being upgraded.

These are gonna be the new components https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wxHkyX.

However, I am concerned about the temperature since my old build ran between 80-85C just playing COD.

Anyone have recommendations or advice concerning temperature? Also, will the Hyper 212 EVO fit in my current case?

    My old components were

CPU Ryzen 5 1400 (stock cooler)

    GPU Radeon RX 580

    RAM 1x8GB Unknown Timing
