File manager that can sort and group like Windows Explorer

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 03:36 AM PST

Hello there, probably stupid question, but is there some File manager that can do sorting and grouping like in Windows Explorer? Something like this. I want to group files in Downloads folder by type and sort by date for example. I would also want to have group divider for separate groups like in screen (Encapsulated PostScript, Folder, etc)

I know it's possible in some way in Dolphin, but I don't want to use Dolphin since I'm using xfce and I can't get Dolphin to work with pywal/oomox themes.

Confused with GTK - How do I change the theme for one application?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 11:52 AM PST

    Hello!

I'm a very, veeery new Linux User (installed it on sunday, lol) and I can't seem to figure out how to change the theme for Libreoffice. I'm on Mint 19.0 and my normal theme is Adapta-Nokto, but it just looks horrible in Libreoffice. I want to change it to Mint-Y.

I found this link in a recent thread and typed in the first example command, replacing Raleigh with Mint-Y and gimp with libreoffice. Upon entering it, Libreoffice pops up, but is still set to Adapta-Nokto.

Why's that, and how can I change it? Thanks for your help. :)

    Have I bricked my laptop?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 09:51 AM PST

Hey guys, am a complete noob in Linux, installed Debian stretch for the first time ever yesterday on my old laptop. I had some trouble getting my laptop (Windows 8) to boot from the Debian installation disc until I turned off secure boot in the BIOS.

Today after installing Debian I entered the BIOS again under 'System Setup' at the startup menu. I turned secure boot back on. After restarting I get the message "debian blocked by current security policy." I click ok. Afterwards I get the message "EFI Network 0 for IPv4 boot failed." then "EFI Network 0 for IPv6 boot failed."

Then finally I get the message "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key. Then select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media'. It then takes me to a boot manager with three options: debian, EFI Network for IPv4 and EFI Network for IPv6. All options lead to a black screen with the message "No bootable device — Please restart system"

I've tried hitting the f2 key before I get the first error message, so I can go to the BIOS and change the secure boot back off again, but it doesn't work. I've tried inserting the installation media, but it doesn't work.

Have I effectively bricked my laptop? Is there anything I can do?

Why is the hardware support for mobile oriented linux distros so limited?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:21 PM PST

For example Ubports' Ubuntu Touch has very limited hardware support. Why is that? What are limitations?

Is it only the drivers? Since android has the linux kernel can't the drivers be reused in linux?

While I have four different distributions installed on a USB drive (puppy, arch, slax, and tinycore), why is puppy the only one that actually gets me to a desktop GUI rather than a black screen with a command prompt I have absolutely no idea at all what I'm even supposed to do with?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 01:07 AM PST

I don't see anything about this in any of the tutorials, but I do see screenshots that look nothing like this...

I used YUMI to install all of these.

    Python interpreter

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 10:11 AM PST

Hello. I am really noob when it comes to linux. I installed OpenSUSE 2 days ago and it's safe to say that I am not sure what I am doing. When it comes to settings, I don't have a problem. It takes me a little more time, but eventually I will find it since it doesn't require much understanding of how things work.

But I do have problems with installing things. I downloaded Chrome and I opened it with System Install/Remove Software and it was installed perfectly. But when I tried installing Opera before that, in the same way, I couldn't.

Anyway, that doesn't matter. I need do start learning Python and I need interpreter (apparently python doesn't have compiler, which really surprised me) . I really don't know how to install one. I went to python.org and it's not 100% clear what I have to do. For windows there are installers, but I can't find one for linux.

    Any help is welcomed.

    PiVPN + UFW: no DNS

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:59 AM PST

Hi, I juste made a PiVPN (openvpn based for Raspberry Pi) and installed UFW just after. When I connect to my VPN, ping to IP address are successful but ping to domain names don't work. I set DNS to OpenDNS at setup so it should work. Here my UFW configuration:

pi@machine:~ $ sudo ufw status verbose Status: active Logging: on (low) Default: deny (incoming), allow (outgoing), deny (routed) New profiles: skip To Action From -- ------ ---- 22/tcp ALLOW IN Anywhere 4443/tcp ALLOW IN Anywhere Anywhere on tun0 ALLOW IN Anywhere 22/tcp (v6) ALLOW IN Anywhere (v6) 4443/tcp (v6) ALLOW IN Anywhere (v6) Anywhere (v6) on tun0 ALLOW IN Anywhere (v6) Anywhere ALLOW OUT Anywhere on tun0 Anywhere (v6) ALLOW OUT Anywhere (v6) on tun0

    Here my setupVars.conf of PiVPN:

    pivpnUser=pi UNATTUPG=unattended-upgrades pivpnInterface=eth0 IPv4dns=192.168.1.XXX IPv4addr=192.168.1.XX IPv4gw=192.168.1.XXX 1500 pivpnProto=tcp PORT=4443 ENCRYPT=521 APPLY_TWO_POINT_FOUR=true DOWNLOAD_DH_PARAM=false PUBLICDNS= OVPNDNS1=208.67.222.222 OVPNDNS2=208.67.220.220

Any idea? 4443/tcp is my openvpn port btw. I didn't find any working solution on the web, that's why I ask here. Thanks in advance and sorry for my english

How do i put non-free wifi firmaware in the boot usb?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 08:37 AM PST

I'm new to linux and this problem has been bugging me for quite a while now

So when installing debian, the installation got stuck on non-free firmware files. It said I'm missing iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode. So i went to here:(https://github.com/OpenELEC/iwlwifi-firmware/blob/master/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode)and download the firmware. Now, where do i put the file at? Am i doing this correct or do i need to download other things as well?

    Cable Unplugged(When it isn't)

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 06:22 AM PST

Hello subreddit, I come here to ask for help.
Honestly, even though there are literally hundreds of posts regarding the same issues, none of them seem to actually work for me.
Recently I installed a new internet system(with a new modem and router) and really, wifi works great on my notebook, however, when I try to connect a cable(wich is working, since it was tested in many other devices), linux(mint 19 cinnamon) says the cable is not plugged(I also tried to boot ubuntu from a USB and the same issue happened).
Up to a couple of days ago, before the installation of the new network setup, using a cable was a viable option and the "cable unplugged" message never appeared incorrectly. Also, it seems that the ethernet interface changed from eth0 to enp2s0.

Is there anything I can do to try and fix it?

This is the link to the pastebin of my ifconfig -a

    system stuck on emergency mode

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 12:15 PM PST

    Relevant prequel :

    • 2 X SSD ( one 840 evo + one 850 evo )
    • 2 X HDD

HDDs are used for storage, formatted on ext4. One of them used to have a 1Tb NTFS partition for Windows that has been deleted/ ext4 reformatted.

850 evo is entirely used for linux ( 18.04 based KDE Neon ) . 840 evo is used for Windows 10 ... usually dual-booting with another linux distro ( used to be Manjaro until ... recently ) .

Important: 840 evo SSD ( the one dual-booting Windows10+linux ) is always physically unplugged... until is going to be used ( not exactly often ) ; each time i plug the 840 SSD i unplug the 850 SSD .

    What happened:

My Windows10 was acting funny last time i plugged the 840 SSD plus i wasn't feeling Manjaro... so i decided to re-install Windows 10, then make a dual boot with OpenSUSE Tumbleweed .

Unplugged my 850 SSD ( the one with 18.04 KDE Neon only ) , plugged the 840 SSD, booted from a live linux distro with Gparted and deleted everything on the 840 SSD & then... after a long while ( no issues, it just took too much time ) had Win10 installed... it was later than expected so just used the regular "shutdown" button from windows , unplugged the 840 SSD, plugged the 850 SSD and called it a day.

Next day, powered the computer ( with only my 850 SSD + 2 HDDs plugged ) ... and now Neon seems to be stuck in emergency mode O__O .

    It shows something like this:

You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or ^D to try again to boot into default mode".

every time i try to ctrl+d + exit or systemctl default it loads what it looks like some text loading sequence for Neon 14.4 and displays the same text as above.

Unfortunately i'm not exactly skilled with the terminal ... yet :| .

From what i've found so far, it looks like my fstab could be wrong.

At this very moment i've unplugged everything but by 850 SSD and did "sudo nano /etc/fstab" but all i see is the UUID for dev sdb1 + swap file .

What should i try or check ? Should i plug the two HDDs as well ?

Thanks in advance for your patience & time

Can I install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on a USB drive?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 10:08 AM PST

I can't imagine any reason why not. I'd like to give Ubuntu a try for a while, but I don't want to replace the Windows 10 installation on my laptop or install Ubuntu alongside Win10. I have two USB drives (16GB and 32GB). Could I make a live USB on one, and then install Ubuntu on the other? Are there any problems with this?

    Laggy animations in Ubuntu 18.04

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 09:54 AM PST

Hey guys, I just installed Ubuntu 18.04 in dual boot alongside Windows 10 on my Dell laptop. It runs smoothly for the most part, but there is some noticeable lag when opening the applications menu and the activity tab, as well as some minor stuttering in other places. Win10 has no such problem and runs very well. From what I can gather, it's a relatively common issue with GNOME, and even people with much more powerful hardware experience it. I'm wondering what could be done to fix it and ensure a smooth and polished experience. Change the desktop environment? Maybe switch to a different distro altogether?

    Laptop specs:

    • Intel Core i7-8550U
    • AMD Radeon 520 + Intel HD Graphics 620
    • 8GB RAM
    • 256GB SSD

    Installing LinuxMint

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 09:02 AM PST

I'm installing linux mint and going through their instructions for doing so. One of the first steps is verifying the ISO image. It has me doing commands. Do I do this after I install the ISO? That doesn't seem right. How would I do that without a linux machine? Also the sha256sum.txt and sha256sum.txt.gpg files are just plain text that I copy from the website? Can someone explain this step to me?

Ubuntu Server 18.04 Active Directory Server

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 04:45 AM PST

    Hi everyone.

I've spent over 6 hours trying to make a active directory server on my home network using Ubuntu 18.04 server.

    I followed this guide: Www.tecmint.com/install-samba4-active-directory-ubuntu

I have the ad part operational but the dns resolver isn't working.

I've looked over bind9 documentation, installed and configured it multiple times with no effect.

Essentially I just need an internal dns server on my wireless home network that will get AD operational. I've set a static ip on the ad server and set the ad server's nameserver to point to itself.

    Running out of ideas.

    Any help really appreciated.

    TIA

Is it possible to make the scroll wheel only scroll through the window?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 04:21 AM PST

    Hi guys.

Sometimes, if you mouse-over a widget like a horizontal slider which needs adjusting or a numerical input field which can increase and decrease its value by one, you can use the mouse wheel to instantly adjust its value without selecting it.

Sometimes i find this very useful, however if a window's widget takes up most of its space I'll want to just scroll the window and inevitably get the cursor accidentally hover over a widget which will then change its value instead of continuing to scroll through the window. Examples include the volume sliders in pavucontrol. This can drive me crazy because i'll have lost the original value and lose my focus while reading something or something similar. Is constantly minding where the mouse is or only using the small scrollbar the only option here?

This is nothing urgent but i was wondering if there is any way to go about disabling this or maybe limit it. I also understand that not all widgets seem to exhibit this behavior so its inconsistent. I tried searching online but couldn't find anything.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 with xfce4 and a usb mouse or a touchpad.

    Thanks a lot.

How difficult would it be to switch over from MacOS to Linux on an older Macbook Pro?

Hi guys, apologies if this seems like a bit of nooby question, but i was wondering, how difficult would it be to switch over to linux from MacOS on a 2011 MacBook Pro? I don't have much experience with using Linux and I wouldn't even know where to start, but I am curious. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers in advance guys

how can I open a shortcut in a terminal? I want to auto-open .ica files (Citrix) so that the Desktop starts automatically. Putting the path to the .ica file in crontab didn't work as it thinks it's a script (it isn't, .ica files have only settings in it).

Ubuntu 18.04 needs monitor connected to log in and use VNC

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 06:20 PM PST

So I upgraded my Plex server to Ubuntu 18.04 from 16LTS. On 16 I was able to reboot the headless server, press enter on the keyboard and type the password to get to the desktop then connect using VNC (I never bothered to get it to start as a service). After Upgrading to 18.04 rebooting the server and pressing enter to log in doesn' work anymore until I connect a monitor and only then am I able to log in. Once logged in I disconnect the monitor and VNC into the machine and it doesnt like it. Things dont fit on screen, clicking on things dont work but not frozen, it's almost as if the cursor is else where locally. I've googled it for a a few weeks already but nothing mentions 18.04 needing a display. What am I doing wrong?

If yu need more information to help me out, let me know! I'm a linux noob beyond setting it and forgetting :)

[QUESTION] Mounting on Linux (sync, async, flush)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 07:06 PM PST

I learned that contrary to Windows, on Linux, files will only be written to removable media (either flash drives or external HDDs) when they are unmounted. If a device is removed without unmounting there will definitely be a data loss which would be whatever was written to the drive when it was plugged it.

This is a bit of a problem for me as I live in a country where power cuts are common-place, which would result in data loss, so I started looking for a solution to prevent this situation. I learned that the mount command uses async by default which only writes the files to the drive completely when it is unmounted. It's counterpart sync does what I want, but it has a warning on the man page of mount and its use is also discouraged on forums online.

Finally I ended up finding someone recommending the flush option for the mount command to someone in a similar situation as me, and this option didn't seem to have any warnings or risks that I could find online. I would like to know whether there really are no caveats to using the flush option for mount, in other words whether it would be safe for me use it when mounting all my external storage. And if there really are no caveats to this method, then why isn't it enabled by default instead of async?

Thanks in advance for any help!
