    Question about CAT6 variations

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:46 PM PST

Over the years I've purchased various brands of CAT6 cable spools for networking my house without paying too much attention to the specifications. Looking at them 3 boxes I have right now, this is what they are:

    • Monoprice CAT6 500MHz UTP Solid CMR 23AWG
    • Unknown brand CAT6E 550MHz UTP Solid CMR/FT4 23AWG
    • Cable Master CAT6 550MHz UTP Solid CMR 23AWG

I know all the acronyms and their uses but my main question is the difference between the CAT6 vs CAT6E and 500 vs 550MHz. I know that CAT6 is 250MHz and CAT6a is 500MHz, so is it safe to assume that the CAT6 cables I have are actually CAT6a? All 3 of the cables have the plastic core in the middle separating the pairs. In some research I found that there isn't a CAT6E standard.. so it's a little confusing. In all cases I've bought spools that were affordable, not look at the best of the best quality, so I guess it understandable that I get these random spec'd cables.

MoCa help, have Moca enabled Modem

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:30 PM PST

    Hello

I looked for some answers for search and think I got the right one but wanted to double check about MoCa.

I have this router with my Fiber Optic provider Frontier

    https://www.amazon.com/NVG468MQ-802-11ac-MoCA%C2%AE2-0-Frontier-Wireless-AC/dp/B073F17BSG/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=

It says Moca enabled and I also have the green light on. So on the other side of my house away from the modem they ran new coax to my TV where they provide me cable service.

My question is can I buy a splitter and then run one coax back to my TV and another one to the Moca box above ? If so do they make another Moca box with more Ethernet ports so I can hook up more wired Ethernet devices ?

I need to be able to have three wired devices

Netgear CM400 speed 30-60mbps after reboot, quickly drops to 1-7mbps, persistent issue.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:12 PM PST

I noticed yesterday that my internet speed was badly attenuated. I've tried troubleshooting with Comcast and via message boards, and I've found that the speed immediately after a modem reboot is excellent, but then it quickly drops back down to 1-7.

    Here's what I've done:

Hardwired modem to laptop Checked cable connections/connectors, swapped Ethernet cables (just to be sure). Disconnected router from power and coax cable for 5 minutes, rechecked connections Checked firmware: v2.01.02 Rebooted modem Factory reset modem

After all of this, I still getting slow internet.

    Any next steps?

Need to move router from one room to another.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:23 PM PST

I'm reorganizing my apartment and want to swap some stuff from one room to another. This includes the equipment AT&T provides. The main wire is connected to the apartment wireing like this. And to the router like this. The wire has the following written on it:

    • LOROM E141823-6 <UL> TYPE CM 60°C 26AWG 2PRS UTP CAT5E PATCH CABLE--------ALL SYSTEMS BROADBAND - 1342

I have my TV and PS4 nearby connected via ethernet.

My question is can I run a long version of the green wire to the other room?

Would internet speed (50Mbps) be affected by the wired length?

Should I instead run a long ethernet cable and buy a splitter?

Also, if I can run the green wire, can I get one on Amazon or at a local store (Best Buy or Fry's?)

    Thank you for the help.

    Router and Modem help

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:19 PM PST

I recently got the NETGEAR CM700 modem and the Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 for my home on 200mbps service. When I went to Spectrum today, they supplied me with a free Technicolor E31U21V modem. I tried to look into the details on the two modems, but I'm not sure which one is better. I see that some people recommend against using the Technicolor, but it seems like to me they have similar specs. Could anyone help me choose the modem that is better for me?

    Thanks

    Looking for a wireless bridge

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:55 PM PST

    Hi,

So I have a server rack in my basement which I need to integrate into my own home network, for management purposes. However, there is no ethernet connectivity in the home, and I'm wondering if there is a way I can extend connectivity to it over wireless. Basically what I'd need is a network switch which presents an ethernet connection to the servers, and connects to home network wirelessly.

[Advice] Looking for new modem/router pair and advice on switching ISP pitfalls.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:41 PM PST

Like the title says, I am likely switching service providers and would like recommendations on how to avoid pitfalls, what questions to ask, how to line up all my ducks in a row before I pull the plug and have to travel to a nearby coffee shop for advice. (e.g. "Call your new service provider to see if they support your router and modem." would be a tip I might expect to hear.)

Is the ARRIS SURFboard/Archer C7 combo still the default? Do you prefer Ubiquiti, or some other option? What are your opinions on pfsense as a router?

Details: In America, small city. No fiber available. ISP is scalping us $100 a month for phone and internet. Speeds are ~3Mb or less. Yes. Megabits. (real-time is usually 100-300 kB/s) On top of that, we have random connectivity errors that require reconnecting the router combo(I know) to the ISP manually, or switching off and on to reset because the interface is not accessible.

I'm a soft tech nerd. Somewhere between power user and help-desk/pathetic sys-admin. I've installed operating systems, grepped logs, and borked machines. I understand a modems vs routers. Not afraid to dirty my hands a bit(You can probably talk nerdy to me without receiving a blank stare). I'm torn between Tomato for simplicity and Open-WRT for extensibility, but I've never put either on a router or worked with them.(I'm reading documentation for Open-WRT now to install tomorrow, or maybe really late tonight.) I'd appreciate both the quick and dirty answers, and links to the in-depth how, why and wheretofore.

BTW, Thanks for taking time out of your day to help all the people like me, who ask inane questions.

    Upload limitation with Archer C2

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:40 PM PST

Hello, i come here because i have a weird problem with my archer c2.

My connection has just been updated and my download speed is perfect but my upload is limited to 10 mega out of the 20 that I should have ...

I tested with the cable directly from my modem and I have 20 mega, so it's the archer c2 that poses a problem ...

I have already looked at the QOS and it is not that because it has always been disabled and is still ... Can someone help me solve my problem? Thank you in advance.

Question on more ethernet connections in same room

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:24 PM PST

Hey, quick noob question..I'm wondering if it's possible to get more than one ethernet cable running in my room

I have the modem/router set up downstairs, so I only am able to have one ethernet cable running in my room because I only have one connection access that's on the wall.

I want to know how I am able to run more than 1 cable in this room without having to run the wires from downstairs.

Are there any splitters I can connect in here?

again, sorry for the noob question.

    thanks

Trying to setup switch and Google Wifi, please advise (diagrams included)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:12 PM PST

I'm going to attach two images here, one is my current setup, and the next image is what I would like.

I'm basically trying to get away from our netgear routers and have a 4 point Google WiFi system. I have heard some say that you can't go from modem -> switch -> router. So I wanted to check and see what you all think.

    Current Set up

Proposed Set up with Google WiFi

    EDIT:

Ok I think I may have figured out how this will work. Modem (basement) -> Google Wifi (first floor) -> 8 Port Switch (basement) -> Patch Panel (basement)

    That work the best?

(NETGEAR C7100V) vs (NETGEAR CM500V and router) as replacement for comcast box

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:57 PM PST

So, I am not particularly happy with the wifi speeds my computer gets. They aren't terrible, but they aren't the best.

I also know that my family is paying monthly for the comcast box, and I would like to stop paying that fee.

That being the case, I did some research, and since I have voice through comcast, my options are quite limited (i have a 250 mbps plan).

My first question would be if I got the all in one box, the NETGEAR C7100V, would I see wifi speed improvements over the box that comcast provides me?

It claims that there is a AC1900 WiFi Router inside of the c7100v.

If I got the cm500v + ac1900 standalone, it would cost less. Would I get better or worse speeds?

Would the cm500v + a more router be worth it?

I'm using wifi for gaming on my pc (don't bother, no i can't run a cable) so better speeds would be a plus.

My PC is located on the second floor of my house almost directly above my current comcast modem/router. So it's only like ~10-15 feet away but there is a floor and a table in the way as well.

There is also a tablet and laptop that are used daily in my house by my family, as well as a few phones that rarely connect to the internet and a chromecast also used daily.

    Help with my problem

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:45 PM PST

This is a little hard to explain, but I have two different internet modems from the same ISP but they each have different plans (one being slower than the other), and even though I'm connected to the main modem via Ethernet , occasionally my internet connection will swap to the slower modem, then eventually switch back, or I need to reset the slower modem for it to switch back to the fast one.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Networking speeds vs internet speed

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:38 PM PST

    Hello Everyone,

Slowly starting to develop my own home network. I have 2015 macbook pro and enabled file sharing with my windows 10 pc. Whenever i transfer files between the macbook pro and windows 10 pc the internet on my windows machine get extremely slow. Ping goes from 9ms to 315ms, is this normal for the speed of my internet to drop this much well transferring data?

Budget wireless 802.11.ac adapter for in-home screen sharing?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:33 PM PST

Hi all, was hoping that perhaps someone here could help out with some advice :)

I am setting up a solution to wirelessly clone the screen of my desktop computer to a second monitor in the living room, for the purpose of media viewing, gaming, and general computer use.

My plan is to use a Steam Link device that hooks up to the living room monitor and uses my local network to stream from my desktop computer. Full wired is not a solution due to the layout of the rooms, although I may hook up the Steam Link unit to the router wired and have the connection to my desktop computer be wireless.

Currently I have a Netgear R6700v3 as my wireless router, which seems sufficient for the bandwidth and performance needed. However, I realized that I currently have a big bottleneck in my desktop computer's wifi adapter. My current adapter is a TP-Link TL-WN881ND which only does 2.4ghz and 802.11n.

To make sure I can use the full potential of my router I'm currently looking for a replacement PCI adapter, or an additional USB wifi adapter to complement with. I do realize that USB adapters are considered to be much inferior, but it would be useful to get a picture of all of my options.

Could anyone perhaps recommend a wifi adapter that would do a passable job, for a low budget of $30 or less? It would be interested in knowing good options among both PCI and USB adapters - any help or recommendations would be hugely appreciated! Thanks :)

    Searching for the right router

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:25 PM PST

There are thousands of posts and choices out there but they all have very specific needs so I am hoping that someone with knowledge would be able to help out my decision making for my specific use case.

I currently am using the base Verizon FiOS G1100 Router and it is letting me down repeatedly. So I am looking to build better from here. I am looking to purchase a router and the following are what I want to be able to have it achieve. Any suggestions are most welcome. I have classified these into two groups of basic and complex:

    Basic

    • $300 or less (ideally)
    • Compatible with Verizon FiOS (Gigabit Internet)
    • At least 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports (output)
    • Router made newer than ~2016
    • 802.11ac or better
    • Known for security (or at least not known for a lack of security)
    • Support for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks

    Complex

Thank you very much for your help!

    Re-posted to correct sub-reddit. Thanks!

Slow wired connections on gigabit networking equipment

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:31 AM PST

Hi all, relative newbie to the networking world, though I've worked as a devops guy for a bit now. I'm attempting to transfer some files around my network, plus or minus 1GB each, and transfer rates for wired connections are around 5-7 MB/s. I am looking for 75-100+ MB/s, I know I won't get the full 1000 Mb/s promised, but I'd be happy with 600+ Mb/s.

I rent a place where I can not effectively run my own wires. The first floor of our house has the network entry, modem, all in one router, a gigabit unmanaged switch, and a wired desktop computer. The AIO router's LAN ports are 100 Mb/s (I know, first thing I need to upgrade...). The switch is 1000 Mb/s. In this switch, I have the AIO, the wired desktop, and a powerline kit plugged in. The powerline kit is rated at 1200 Mb/s.

The powerline goes to the third floor where it goes into another gigabit switch. In that gigabit switch is the server I am trying to transfer to. The server and desktop both have a gigabit LAN port.

With this setup, I should be able to get gigabit speed from my desktop downstairs to my server upstairs - I think packets should go from my desktop to the downstairs gigabit switch, from the gigabit switch to the gigabit+ powerline kit, to the gigabit upstairs switch, into the gigabit server.

I am instead getting 40-60 Mb/s. The router maxing out at 100 Mb/s could be the cause here. I could also see the powerline kit not recognizing that the switches are gigabit on either end causing it to fallback to 100 Mb/s.

Is there any reason my router would be in the loop for this transfer? Anything else I might be missing here?

edit: I have verified 400+ Mb/s speeds across both switches individually. I'm not positive on how to verify speed across the powerline kit without a switch on at least the downstairs side to hold the router and a computer. It definitely seems like the powerline kit isn't recognizing both sides are gigabit.

    Old router- security issues?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:01 AM PST

If a Netgear router hasn't had new firmware since 2011, is it susceptible to security issues? ie, would it be a good idea to get a new one? Thanks!

TP-Link Mini WiFi Smart Plug (HS105) Blew out my outlet & nightlight

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:54 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Hope you are all doing well! I bought TP-Link Mini WiFi Smart Plug (HS105) for black friday and put it for a small nightlight in my room as a test run for a few days before hooking it up to my more important devices. After about 3 days, today out of no where it short circuited the nightlight. Nothing else was plugged in between, it was a direct light -> TP-Link -> wall outlet connection. The light was completely burned out, and it does not even take that much power.

I heard of TP Links having issues of burning things out but I was not expecting this. I was afraid of this happening and I am afraid to plug in other devices. Has anyone dealt with this? I love the idea of a smart plug but I am afraid of ruining my devices.

Any help or insight on this would be greatly appreciated I am trying to tread with this device on the safe side since my fear is leaving my home and something happening, for the light this time I was in the room. Thanks for your time :)

pfSense box recommendations for basic VON inbound/outbound and QoS

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:36 AM PST

I'm looking for some hardware recommendations for a pfSense Box. I currently have a Edgerouter X with QoS setup but it has not been working great for me. I have a 500 Mbps connection with 10+ devices connected at a time. I also have a home business I run from my main workstation that I would like a VPN connection for at all times. I've been looking at the Protecli units but there are mixed reviews for them.
