    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

The shop building it says the cpu is incompatible. Is this true? If so, why?

"Don't cheap out on the PSU!" - Don't cheap out on anything, really.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 04:44 PM PST

I've seen this sentence since I built my first computer in 2015, I tried to figure it out all by myself and well, the PC worked but it could have been better. Here's my experience with the "don't cheap out" advice.

CPU - If you cheap out, you'll probably end up wanting to upgrade very soon, making it a bad deal in the end. In this case there are only two CPU manufacturers, so you wont get a bad quality product per se, but you can get a weaker one for your intended workload.

GPU - I was one of them, I said "Eh, I'll probably just play CS:GO", only to regret my 270x buy a few months later, when you build your PC it hits you with excitement and you kinda wanna try everything. Be sure that you truly know what games you want to play.

RAM - Similar to CPU and GPU, you can't really go wrong to what brand you chose, more like the amount of RAM you'll need and it's speed. I think 8gb is still passable, but you can encounter some problems depending on what you are doing. Personally, I chose 2x8gb 2133 to never worry about RAM ever again because I'm a video editor and currently studying graphic design. And CPU's like Ryzen benefit from fast RAM so that's another thing to be aware of, you could really boost your gaming experience by getting those extra MHz. The advantage of RAM is that you don't really need to replace the entire stick (unless you reeeeally cheaped out), let's say if 8gb is not enough for you, you just fill up the other channel with another 8gb stick to add up 16gb.

CASE - If you cheap out on this, you'll have a very shitty time building the actual PC, it could be cable management badly supported or ketchup and mustard cables. Your case will be the face of your PC, you have to like it 100%.

PSU - The classic, don't cheap out on your power supply. Get as a minimum an 80+ bronze rated one fro ma reputable brand, I always recommend gold rating. Everything is connected to the PSU at the end of the day, if it's a shitty PSU, it can potentially fail in a violent way and damage other components.

STORAGE - I'd like to point out two kinds of "cheaping out" here.

    1. If you cheap out on your storage overall, and definitely don't want to spend that extra $ for an SSD, really consider your decision... An SSD is pretty much standard these days anyway, having one as your main boot drive is a no brainer. The entire OS runs on the SSD, making literally everything feel faster, from booting Win10, to opening Chrome, to opening Settings. Your entire OS experience will be faster, making a bigger impact to what CPU/GPU you have, the drive is the one loading up your OS and programs.

    2. If you cheap out on a SSD/HDD to a generic unknown Chinese brand, is it really worth risking your data just to save a few bucks? Only buy storage parts from reputable brands.

COOLER - Your CPU doesn't need to be at 19C all day (extremely cool), but it also doesn't need to be at 50C at idle (fairly hot). Can your CPU handle 50-75C? Yes it can. Does having your CPU at 50-75C all day lower it's lifespan? Yes it does.

I'm not hinting at water cooling here just cause I prefer it, air cooling is also perfectly fine. Consider what you are gonna use your CPU for... Are you gonna overclock? Render all day? Game all day? Keep your CPU healthy, don't buy the cheapest cooler you can find, they can be very whiny under load.

EDIT: As pointed out by many, your CPU temp is not that crucial from what I'm reading, of course you need to keep your CPU temp controlled, but the "safe zone" is much wider than I expected. Personally, I'm not comfortable with my CPU running at 50-75C but I guess that's my preference. Running at 50-70C will not have a noticeable effect.

MOTHERBOARD - This is a tricky one, because I have a personal experience with this one. It's funny cause currently there's a post on the front page asking what's the importance of the motherboard... I can assure you, it is important haha

This was the main problem with my first build, I just bought the cheapest motherboard I could find, like dirt cheap. It was an AsRock board.

I would get these awful frame drops while gaming, it was the motherboard overheating because I did not have any heat sinks (it had, but extremely small and ineffective) and it really wasn't made for that. I contacted the GPU manufacturer and they told me it was probably another piece in the build, after 6 months of frame drops I tracked down the problem, when AsRock support answered my mail: "That board wasn't made for heavy loads like that and it will not perform optimally if you play games" or something among those lines :(

The quality of your MOBO can affect stability of your CPU, RAM and others. Pick one that has multiple fan headers, a decent variety of ports on the IO, one with proper cooling, one that has the amount of RAM slots that you need, if you like listening to music maybe a good AMP is not a bad idea... you get my point.

See the MOBO as this giant PCB that you will be taking advantage of while you have your PC, think ahead!!! A MOBO can lasts you AGES if you plan your buy properly, you can upgrade literally everything on the computer and not have to change your MOBO because you really thought ahead.

Balance is key! No matter what's your budget, try to balance everything and build your PC the more "future proof" that you can. Or you'll end up like me, upgrading the CPU, GPU, PSU, CASE and HDD in like 10 months.

My second build was a lot more thought out, I've been using it for two years now, and don't plan to upgrade anything any time soon :)

EDIT: Some have pointed out valid counter arguments to what I'm saying, I'm tired of arguing in the comments so I'm gonna say that everything comes back to common sense really... Read reviews, inform yourself, checkout what other people are saying about the product you want to buy.

I am aware that the other parts I listed on my post, unlike the PSU, don't have the capability to ruin your entire system. That's why the "don't cheap out on the PSU" is the most common one, I am mentioning these other parts because from my experience they are also worth putting a little thought when you buy them in order to have the best "PC experience" possible.

And no, you don't need to be rich to build a balanced PC, I am not saying that. Hope you can get the general idea of what I'm trying to promote here, I'm no "PC knowledge master" but I feel confident to share this advice/experience with you.

My wonderful i7-4790k/Asus Maximus Hero VII setup died in Windows last and now no POST video at all

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:02 AM PST

I'm just fucking fuming mad and confused right now! My nearly 4 year old overclocked i7 4790k setup just took a total shit a few hours ago after just using it for internet usage for Amazon return. It's the following specs:

I7 4790k at 4.7 ghz using Thermalright True Spirit 140 Power HSF on 1.26v if I recall

    Asus ROG Maximus Hero VII

    G.Skill Trident X 16gigs DDR3

    SAMSUNG Evo 850 1TB

    HGST 1Tb Travelstar HDD

No Gpu, as I sold my 1080ti for needing money at the time

    Seasonic Snow Silent 1050watt

    Visual of setup: https://i.imgur.com/t7nLfq5.jpg https://i.imgur.com/s7MwWZ9.jpg'

This setup had hardly given me any troubles over the past 3.5 years being moderately overclocked on air. But now my machine just randomly "shut off" in middle of Amazon support chat. Wtf? That's new..... Power it up again, goes to windows and I verify my APC 1500watt UPS is fine and it is.

A few minutes later it black screens again. Power it up and it POST screens but then crashes again. I remove full power and try again with cold boot. Now I have no POST whatsoever on my on board HDMI! Fuck!!

I plug PSU into wall instead and try again. Now my mobo just constantly Power cycles every 3 seconds. The fans and lights come on but no POST screen at all. Yank power and it the motherboard LED diagnostics keep changing every single time then it crashes and powers off. Then powers on and repeats the power cycle loop with the PSU relay switch tripping every time as I can hear it clearly.

    I've done the following aleady:

    1. Plugged in known working Silverstone 850watt PSU from HTPC. No change at all.

    2. Removed mobo/ram/cpu assembly out of case and onto cardboard box with nothing else attached. No change, still no POST screen, still power cycle loop with different PSU. Onboard LEDs constantly change numbers, no pattern.

    3. Reseat RAM. No change

    4. Move RAM into HTPC setup. Htpc boots normally with gaming G.Skill RAM

    5. Move HTPC RAM into gaming rig =No change.

    6. Pulled CMOS battery and also used Reset button on Mobo. No change.

    Fuck!!!! What the hell happened?

Looking for nice gaming headphones under 200 dollars

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:31 PM PST

One of the most important things to be is comfort as I have big ears so with the crappy turtle beaches I have right now, my ear gets squished inside. My last headphones before were sennheiser game zero's and they are the best headphones I've had to date, they just broke. Sound is also very important to me and I needs to have a good mic. I play lots of different games like fallout, battlefield, overwatch, battler royales and more, I also listen to music that uses a lot of base like edm or some rap. My budget is 200 and if the wireless is good I would be okay with it but the sound still needs to be good. I was looking at the sennheiser artic pro or wireless but idk how much the sound is impacted. My friends also said bose gc35 are good. I liked the the sennheiser gsp 600 also or the PC 373D also be sennheiser.

    Replacing PSU? Somehow nervous.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:24 PM PST

Hi, I've upgraded my GPU and decided I'd up my 550 PSU to a 650 for future upgrades and to be safe.

Are PSUs tricky to change? I see a lot of cables and it just scares me lol. Do you have any tips and tricks to help?

    Thank you.

CPU Core temp ~45-50 C idle with liquid cooler. Whats going on?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:50 AM PST

    • MAXIMUS VII IMPACT
    • i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
    • H100i GTX Corsair Cooler

When I first built this computer 3 years ago I was idling at about 30-35 C. I noticed my temps were around 50 C idle and figured my thermal paste was drying up/had poor coverage as this was the first computer I ever built. I took it apart yesterday and cleaned it out, not as much dust as I expected and the thermal past was looking ok as far as I could tell. I put the cooler back on and just as a safety measure I took it off again to make sure I had good Thermal paste covering. I reapplied it once again and got the system running again. To my surprise im getting the same 45-50 C idle temps... Got frustrated and figured Id do it all over again today, so thats what I did. Thermal paste looked good again but once I plugged it in, same thing.. Temps averageing about 45-50. At this point I figured maybe I have poor drivers, I checked intels website and downloaded some software that told me I had no driver updates available.

At this point Im not really sure what to do. I did upgrade my graphics card to a 2080, but I cant see how a bottleneck could occure at idle. I am also using a 2k ultrawide if that matters, but I was under the impression the higher the resolution the more work the GPU is doing, not CPU. Also I do often times have 10-20 chrome tabs open at one time, but I think that only has an effect on Ram, which I have 16Gb's of.

here is a screenshot of Core Temp with itself and chrome the only thing running: https://gyazo.com/3916237e5dfe760d63f695db0845e731

Its been running like this for about 10 minutes and load never goes above 10%. (it fluctuates around 1-5%)

First PC build in quite a few years!

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:42 AM PST

So guys, with the help of this sub and lots of research of my own, I've ordered all the parts for my new build. This is to replace the last desktop I built, which is a Phenom II X3 (unlocked to quad core), 8GB, no-name video card, and spinning disk build. I have been mostly using laptops since I built the Phenom system, and right now my primary machine is a Dell XPS 15 with i7, 16GB, 4k, and 512GB SSD on a dock. It's connected to an LG 43" 4k monitor, and this setup has been awesome but it was time to build a desktop again and free up the laptop for couch use rather than it being stuck in my office all the time. Anyway, I'm excited to get it going and play some flight sims again!

Here's the parts list of goodies I picked up over the last couple weeks:

Anyone who chooses a GTX 1050 Ti over an RX 570 at this point is a fool.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 11:48 PM PST

Unless you're putting a graphics card in a pre-built PC with a crappy power supply or in a market where the 1050 Ti is significantly cheaper, you shouldn't even consider the 1050 Ti. The RX 570 is the same price and performs about 50% better. Just thought I'd throw this out there for people putting PC builds together.

Is it okay to get a 1070ti and a 1080p 144hz TN monitor?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:58 AM PST

I'm planning on building a new pc and I come from a laptop with a shitty graphic card (750M). I really want to get a future proof build but I don't know if the 1070ti is overkill for a TN monitor and I wouldn't be taking advantage of it in terms of high quality image.

I'm about to spend $37,000 on new computers, and I'm freaking worried.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 05:27 AM PST

Hey everyone! I'm about to drop all this money on these 20 x new computers for the kids in 2019 with my social development, multiplayer video gaming group and just finalizing the emails with suppliers, trying to source the right parts and making sure I make the right choices with the biggest decision of my life, however it's still causing me to loose a lot of sleep.

I thought it might ease my suffering if I posted what I've been sending off for you guys to pick apart and shed some more light on the situation: Keep in mind all prices are in New Zealand Dollars.

    Hey there,

Sorry for the delay, I've been doing a lot of homework based on the quotes I have received from everyone in NZ. Please understand that I have been asking a multitude of suppliers in order to mainly get their opinion, which has been incredibly insightful, as some have had many personal experiences with some components they would not have recommended to their worst enemies.

I have shuffled a few new things around on my PC PARTS PICKER list in relation to what I have learned, and I have pretty much absolutely made my mind up on this build, however if stock is still an issue, recommend an alternative and I will do some more homework on your suggestion.

Again, price will be a factor, so the cheapest you can do them the better, however this time I am very interested in knowing what the warranties are for each component.

Also, I wish to know your thoughts about accepting some sort of sponsorship moving forward with our organization, and helping us by reducing the cost further, after reading about some of our work. If you are interested in hearing more about this, and the opportunities we can provide you as a sponsor, then please let me know if you are interested.

Allow me to break down my thoughts on the parts again in order they appear on the PC PARTS PICKER LIST AS FOLLOWS:

    PC PARTS LINK: https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/user/hobbit_miester/saved/xB6dXL

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor: No brainer, this thing is a boss. Someone reccommended cutting some costs on the RAM in order to get a Ryzen 7, but after some benchmarking homework, I only saw an average of a 5 FPS increase between the Ryzen 5 2600x and the Ryzen 7 2700x. Not worth spending all that extra on that upgrade. RAM is KEY to this Ryzen architecture.

MOBO: Asus - TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard. I can't believe someone managed to find one of these in the quantities I need, especially in the B450M chipset and in mATX form factor. TUF motherboards are unreal. I've been using an ASUS TUF on my own personal rig, and it was originally an experimental computer I used to wire up crazy stuff like Car Audio Sounds and Relays for some weird Frankenstein experiments. At one point I had flames and smoke coming off the board itself, and I thought I had ruined it completely. 7 years later, I'm still playing DAYZ and PUBG on the damn thing with no worries. With all the moving around I have to do with my mobile organization, this Asus - TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard as an option is an absolute must. The things a brick shit house. I will just need some form on additional confirmation that the Ryzen 5 2600x and the RAM I have selected below on it will work just fine.

Memory: G.Skill - Flare X Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory: This still gives me nightmares. While many have recommended other types of ram due to the lack of and wait time of 4-5 weeks to get the Flare X I have recommended, I couldn't find any of the alternative recommendations anyone made on an AMD AM4 Memory Support List for Ryzen I found. A couple recommendations were on the list, but they had some nasty ass RGB thing going on, and I don't want extra vanity garbage going on that may cause issues when I didn't even want it. I just want the raw deal. It is very important that I get the EXACT following part number for this ram kit: F4-3200C14D-16GFX

F4-3200C14D-16GFX is the ONLY known B-Die, 3200mhz CL14 16GB Kit by G.Skill that is GUARANTEED to work 100% with Ryzen. You can see for yourself here: https://benzhaomin.github.io/bdiefinder/

The RAM kit I require MUST be F4-3200C14D-16GFX

Some suppliers have said they can get it easily albeit the wait time, others have said it's impossible. It must be able to come from somewhere.

I am prepared to wait for this to arrive, so please let me know as soon as I can get my hands on 20 x of these kits. I simply can not deal with the stress of risking another RAM kit in this quantity with Ryzen. There is stuff all concrete evidence or resources online to prove it will work, other than 'My mate has one and he says it's all good'. These exact kits were sent out by AMD personally for testing and benchmark reviews. This is all the proof I need.

HDD: Seagate - Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive: Pretty self explanatory, this thing does the job.

Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB WINDFORCE OC 6G Video Card: I've changed my mind about the concerns I had for a heavy graphics card flexing and bending while my operation is mobile and during transit. Someone mentioned that the single fan card I chose before is a bad idea, as at one point they even had claims that smoke came off the thing during stress testing. I can get away with a heavier card, as I will make sure I transport the pc's with the motherboard parallel to the road, so the gravitational down force is pushing into the motherboard. This is also the highest rated cheapest GPU on pcpartspicker.

PSU: EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply. This was a toss up between it's Seasonic equivalent, but I had to go with EVGA, as from personal experience, this thing is indestructible. It has built in cable capacitors apparently, and I've been using the same one on my Frankenstein rig I mentioned earlier, and had it safety switch off successfully multiple times after reverse currents, cross voltages, and arching, and it didn't blow. This thing BLEEDS out fast too. Flick it off at the wall, all power is drained instantly, where as capacitors still hold power on other PSU's when you flick it off, leaving them susceptible to damage when moving still charged components. I'd rather pay a little more than the Seasonic for this cover.

Wifi Card: Asus - PCE-AC88 PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter. WIFI with my operation is LIFE OR DEATH. If I can't keep a good connection on 20 machines wirelessly with competitions, I'm doomed. I'd also like to do this with everyone twitch streaming independently too, all over a wireless network, so I need a good wifi card. A lot of people couldn't get the one I originally asked for, so underspeced it with it's predeccessor, which didn't even say it had windows 10 support on the site, or the latest AC modes. This one I have chosen this time is a freaking monster, claiming it can do Wi-Fi speeds of up to 2100Mbps with the right 4x4 router. This is the kinda stuff I need.

Case Fan: I just put one here for a reference, I need an additional 120mm fan that MUST be 4 pin PWM. The reason for this, is the cases have 2 x fans on the front already, but nothing on the rear. I want air to blast through these bad boys, so an additional rear 120mm 4 pin PWM is crucial, as a PWM fan will try stay quiet when it needs to. You can imagine 20 x computers with fans going will add up, so please just try find me a cheap 120mm fan that is still really quiet, and is a 4 pin. Ideally I don't want ANY LED's on it because it will get annoying for some other people having to stare at LED's at an event. I've also just realized that the motherboard I have chosen only has 2 chassis fan connectors, but I will still need an additional fan regardless, as the front fans in the case can not be removed, so I will only plug one of these in, and use an additional fan on the rear of the case to get a good flow through of air. I may just get some 4 pin splitters from ebay alternatively to get all 3 going.

Thanks for putting up with me with all this whinging, but I'm about to spend more money than I ever have in my entire life, and I greatly appreciate your guys support.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

    Hi guys,

So i've picked up all the parts listed below for just under £800 total so far but i'm really struggling to choose a motherboard. I'm also planning on overclocking the 2700 so i guess i might also need an aftermarket cooler? any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Zotac GTX 1080 mini Issues

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:35 PM PST

One of two fans is too stiff to spin. I've tried cleaning it out with a can of compressed air but still nothing. I assume that the lubricant had dried out or hardened somehow and is causing the fan to seize up. However, I cannot seem to be able to open the fan, at least without breaking it and I don't know where to buy aftermarket ones. Any suggestions?

Hello ! I'm working as a web developer, and I'm planning to build my first pc.

It would have two purposes: First one is to work.
I want it to be on windows, and I'm planning to install some VM on it with ubuntu and/or debian for example. And I would like for it to run some app like the jetbrain suit smoothly.

    Second purpose is to gaming.
I like to game, and I would like to do it on my new computer. I'd like to be able to play big triple A game. Not have the spec on ultra is not a problem for me, but having a quality as the level of what console can do would be great.

I can pay approximately 850€. I would appreciate if you could tell me if that is really not enough or if it's reasonable. And if it is, what shoul I buy?

NewEgg Lost Package - Nightmare situation and process HELP PLEASE

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 10:13 PM PST

I do not think that is the right place to post this but i really need your help if someone had the same issue ...I ordered 3000$ worth of computer parts separately Oct 23, 2018 . (i received some part 1500# worth and did not receive the other) It was supposed to be delivered on in a week . so Nothing came in . (There is no delivery agent in the area because of a construction site in the street) so i checked the Tracking number i saw that it was delivered no one sign for it, i went to the post office where i suppose to pick it up she told there is nothing for me (what they concluded that the agent made a mistake and delivered it to the wrong person) so I chatted with customer service and was told I have to go to the police station to get a police report. I did that immediately and sent everything to them. 3 days go by and I do not get any update . I start feeling like i'm going crazy. I message customer service numerous times and I keep getting the same response. everyday i was doing this like everyday (sometimes there is 60 person in the queue but i wait) and i get the same response : ''i understand your feelings and i am here to assist you Please be assured that i will email you with update withing 1-2 business days '' After 2 weeks, they told me that they are going to expedite my claim....wait what !!! ALL THE WEEK I WAS TALKING WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND LITERALLY NOTHING IS MOVING FORWARD and no email or call or an update nothing ! It has been 2 weeks and I still don't have my parts and once again I get customer service telling me I have to wait and they will update me later today. I have spoken with them literally 25 times and not once have I gotten an update not once (like hey mister they will check with Canada post they will verify this and that ... no no no nothing) . Now i have a case and water cooling a graphic card and hard drive and they are setting there on the table I don't even want those parts anymore, I just want my money back. What else can I do? This has been a nightmare buying from newegg. Any advice from anyone would be greatly greatly appreciated because i can not get my money back !

First time building a PC in years, need some guidance.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:03 PM PST

I have been doing a lot of research and reading reviews for various parts. I am looking to build a budget gaming PC capable of running Fortnite at 60fps or higher (I'm not going to be purchasing AAA titles and if I did, running them on Ultra would not mean anything to me) I would prefer to keep it in the 500-600 $ range.

Turning ON monitor after exposed to (-4C temps outside) for 12+ hours - should or Shouldn't ? -

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 07:16 AM PST

New monitor arrived after work, before arriving it had sit 12+ hours inside a delivery van from town to town. (the outside temp were -4C) inside the van it shouldn't have been as cold right?... there is obvious minimal condensation on the monitor and all around but would there be any condensation inside?

Can i turn it ON now or should i wait 24 hours completely ?

it's a AOC Q3279VWFD8 looks way better than on photos, and it's a steal for the price and functionality it offers. if anyone cares

Been a few years and I need a new tower. What new things are worth considering in 2018

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:55 PM PST

My PC is the brains of a recording an production studio, my builds always been very much a research-build-forget everything kind of deal, I tend to spend my tech stat on researching music gear.

I want a new soundcard which is going to require Thunderbolt and my current board doesnt support or have a TB header for upgrade. I dont want to risk losing operation with switching motherboard, so a new build it is. My current PC is annoyingly fine but the upgrade to my functionality TB would give me is too great to resist

So what website does everyone use to arrange their builds and check the parts speak to each other properly?

I'm pretty much going to go top tier as i do like to have the sweetest ride possible so any tips on the latest and greatest bits that people consider a must have in a modern setup?

Graphics arent necessarily a priority, high performance and memory is really what I'm needing. Dealing with a shit tonne of audio processing and CPU heavy software simultaneously. Noise is certainly a factor and im assuming heat is a factor too considering how much power i want under the hood.

Looking forward to getting my nose into some research but this subreddit has given me much over the years it seems a good place to reach out for a starting point.

hope you are all well and appreciate any tips, wish me luck!

Trying to diagnose my pc’s issues

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:50 PM PST

    Greetings r/buildapc

So for the past 6 months, my pc has been having nonstop issues. To summarize it up, today I found out the LED light on my motherboard is flashing whenever I boot it (the LED light slightly above the motherboard cable on the motherboard). So my question is, is the motherboard faulty? Btw the pc is able to boot up fine and start normally, but will run into random BSODs at random times. Sometimes when I enter the password menu it will bluescreen after I sign in or it will bluescreen randomly while playing a game.

    Specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 MSI b350 gaming plus Gskill DRAM4 2x4 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Samsung 860 EVO 1 Tb

    CPU fan not spinning

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:37 PM PST

Hello, I am running an i5-6400 at 2.7 ghz, on a Intel 100 series C230 motherboard. As of late, I have noticed my CPU temps stay very high (80-90c) because the CPU fan is not spinning. I am sure the fan must be working because it ran at full power when I changed the "smart fan" option in the bios. I have re-sat the wire connecting to the the mobo in the same, and a different slot to no avail. Any idea why it won't run normally i.e not spinning at all, at any time
