Love KDE but Love GTK themes more - Need Help o/ Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:13 AM PST Hello good people of r/linux4noobs o/ Intro: I've ditched Windows last month and I've tried all DE's (on Ubuntu). Decided to roll with Kubuntu 18.10, which is great btw, but I have a problem. Although I love KDE & kvantum themes with blur, I realised that I like GTK3+ themes more. So I thought maybe I should switch to a Gnome based DE. TL;DR:
My old geezer has: 8 GB RAM, Nvidia 630M GPU, i7 3rd gen, no SSD (yet), 6-7 yrs old laptop. Kubuntu works flawless but Firefox sometimes hangs on while typing with 10+ tabs open. I'm mainly using it for gaming, web programming and torrent streaming. Have a wonderful day (or night, wherever you are :)) Edit - Answer: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/comments/a1gtlm/love_kde_but_love_gtk_themes_more_need_help_o/eaq25cr [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:55 AM PST Hi guys, This is a very serious problem. I hope you can help. I am running Ubuntu 16.04 Neither my built-in laptop stereo nor my external USB mic are producing any sound, although both have done in the past. They fail mic tests online, recordings with software, and Skype calls. My laptop produces sound just fine. I have attached screenshots of what I see in Alsamixer and Pulseaudio: https://i.redd.it/h3360yh64b121.png https://i.redd.it/twbifol74b121.png My USB mic is connected to the laptop via QJackCtl (Or at least it's meant to be). I would really appreciate any help with this. Not only do both my phones not work, but my mics don't work either. I need this for a job interview. Please help. [link] [comments] |

Trying to install Ubuntu on an iMac5.1 (Late 2006) Posted: 29 Nov 2018 09:20 AM PST I am having some trouble getting this babe to speak Linux. According to the S/N, it's a Core2Duo Device. So far it doesn't recognize any boot medium. It ejects 64bit Ubuntu DvDs, gets stuck on reading 32bit ones, doesn't see any USB devices and and if I connect a pre-installed HDD it won't boot without some Grub editing. Does anybody have experience with this product line and Linux? [link] [comments] |
Trying to compare encryption methods. Posted: 29 Nov 2018 08:45 AM PST I recently learned how to use both RClone & GPG (via Seahorse) and plan on uploading to a cloud. I'm wondering which way would be better for encryption? RClone encyption: Go through RClone let it encrypt the files for you using the remote. But what happens if you reset computer. Or want to share cloud link for someone else to download Seahorse: Encrypt folder to tar.gz. Then upload to cloud. Let them download & send them the password to unlock. Also open to better methods of doing this as well [link] [comments] |
Bad gaming performance XFCE+Compton Posted: 29 Nov 2018 07:50 AM PST I've been a long time linux user but only in Gnome. I just recently got a new laptop to replace my 10 year old second-hand laptop. I decided to try some games and games like The Stanley Parable worked quite well with medium-high settings. I recently decided to switch to XFCE. I had some bad experiences with the default compositor so I installed compton and tried out the same game, The Stanley Parable. At first it ran okay but after just a few seconds my FPS was about half of what it was when I was running Gnome. This also persisted after changing all settings to low. I've also noticed this on other games like Minecraft, where my FPS is a lot lower than it was in Gnome. My specs: Intel i5 7200U Intel HD Graphics 620 8GB ram [link] [comments] |
Old netbook: are 32bit builds still viable or better to go with lightweight DEs/WMs? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 11:33 AM PST Hello, I have a pretty old Atom netbook with 2GB of RAM, capable of using the 64bit ISA. Of course, though, 2GB are not really a lot and using swap storage adds a lot of delay time. I would like to use on it a rolling distro and i narrowed my possible choices to these distros:
Manjaro32 looks like it can be tricky to set up and mantain. ArchLabs and ArchBang, even though are distros recommended for low power devices, have shifted to 64bit architectures. The most stable solution would probably be Manjaro 64bit with Openbox (XFCE is heavier, LXQT still somewhat buggy i would imagine). My question is: is anybody here using ArchLinux32 / Manjaro32, how is the experience, and would it be enough stable to be used by a medium level user? Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |

SSH and sudo issue when logging into VPS Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:55 PM PST SOLVED! Hi. I am not sure if this is the right place or not to ask this So I just added my SSH keys to my Digital Ocean VPS. I used open-ssh to create the keys When I am trying to log in using
I get an error saying
This is weird because for my two other Digital Ocean accounts, the above command works perfectly. I can access my other two droplets without entering sudo but for this I have to enter sudo So I tried
and yup, it's working.
So what's causing this discrepancy? Why can I SSH to my other two droplets that I have created in the past without sudo but for this one I am having to use sudo? [link] [comments] |

Networking Issues with Home Server Posted: 29 Nov 2018 04:44 AM PST I picked up a Dell r410 server recently for home use, on which I installed Ubuntu Server 18.04. For the past few weeks I've been using it to run a few different services in docker containers. My wife recently expressed an interest in programming, so I started to configure it as a KVM host as well. Unfortunately, configuring the network on the server is tripping me up. I'm trying to configure its ethernet connection (eno1) to our modem/router as a bridge. After some trial and error, I've gotten it to where the VM can use the network as expected, but the host machine has limited connectivity and no DNS. I added a second ethernet line (eno2) to the modem router that isn't configured as a bridge, and got no improvement. Another issue I have is when I apply any changes to netplan on the host, it kills the line out to a second modem/router that I'm using only as a wireless AP. My desktop loses all connectivity back to the main router, including both internet and connectivity to the server. Unplugging and replugging the uplink to the secondary router will fix this. Here's some of files/outputs involved in the configuration. If you guys need any more information, let me know! Ethernet adapters: eno1 (bridged), eno2 Bridges br1 /etc/netplan/01-netcfg.yaml Output of ip addr Any help at all would be useful. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Lubuntu crashes to BusyBox for three days in a row Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:54 AM PST Hi fellas, I'm an absolute newb in Linux and I've recently made a switch on both my work PC and my laptop to Lubuntu. Everything is almost fine, I'm enjoying the fact that I actually have RAM I can use if not for this little nag with my work PC. For three days in a row, every time I turn it on after 8 or so hours of inactivity, it crashes to BusyBox, prompting me to use fsck. I've read that this is not out of the ordinary but I think it shouldn't happen for three straight days in a row. Can you tell me what should I look at for the potential fix or where should I buzz off to RTFM? Any help from you would be appreciated. Just don't snark at me too much. :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:51 PM PST I just installed Arch, and it pretty much went successfully (I installed Xorg and GNOME too). Then, I rebooted, and the Grub menu came. I selected the first option (Arch), and then it booted, but got stuck here: What should I do? Should I live boot with the instalation media, chroot, and install some more packages? Lutris not opening in ubuntu 18.04 Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:12 AM PST I'm trying to install lutris for a long time. But it never opens. At first it issues while installing. Now I just get the following error:
I'm just out of options. I have searched many forums but I have not found a solution. Edit: I tried the solution but now it only opens via terminal. It does not open when I click the icon. And no links to install a game open in it. [link] [comments] |
Flatpak problems with apps in Fedora Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:04 PM PST I'm having an issue, which seems to be rooted in either permission or firewall rules with Flatpak apps in Fedora. I'm super new to Linux so advise me what to check to verify if that is the case, but here is what is going on: Issue was first noticed when I installed NetBeans from Flatpak, I tried to install plugins and it would not let me connect to the server to check for new plugins. Tools > Plugins > Available Plugins > Check for Newest. I tried reinstalling, restarting, and many basic things nothing would fix, I then decided to uninstall the Flatpak version and install the version from their website, so I downloaded the binaries and ran it that way, worked flawlessly. Issue happened again when I installed Brackets, after installing I try to use the live preview which should launch google chrome and it gives me the error: An error occurred when launching the browser. (error Unknown). Looking at the debug error code it brings me to a line that says: user-select: none; Debugger gave me console error: Couldn't find the dom for path/file.html, also failed to load resource: net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED and seemes to refer to connection attempt to http://127.0.0.1:9222/json I dug around for a few hours in google and the few times this was mentioned people were able to solve by just downloading the version directly from adobe, problem is that adobe only offers a version .deb, and I'm on Fedora :tear: Does anyone have any idea how I would go about troubleshooting this issue? Seems like I will come across it quite often since I have ran into it twice in my 3 week Linux full-time user attempt. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 07:00 PM PST What do you think? I started out with Fedora 27 and then upgraded to 28. I will probably upgrade to 29 soon. One minor thing, the Boxes icon is generic looking. When I was running Fedora 27, it was a normal looking boxes icon. Any ideas? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
