Hello /r/laptops - XMas ideas for my Nan Posted: 28 Nov 2018 07:58 AM PST Hello /r/laptops, First time posting here, but here goes. This Christmas I'd like to get my Grandmother (who has pretty much brought me up on her own) something for Christmas. I'm 29 and previous Xmas's I've been pretty poop due to not having a good enough income, or being in debt. For the first time EVER for Christmas I am debt free and can actually spend 400 on my darling Nan who has always supported me through thick and thin. I'm just prefacing this so you know the importance of this task I am looking for help with. Now my Nan isn't completely unsavy when it comes to computers, but she has had the same laptop for several years now and I'd like to get her something a little newer! She only really uses Excel/Chrome/Solitaire, maybe some other office products (word now and then). She asked for a tablet, but I know there is some pretty good laptop's with detachable keyboards (which are pretty much the same thing right?) as I'm sure she wouldn't mind loading up a kindle app and reading on it as well. I'm more looking for suggestions than anything and although I am a developer myself I don't trust myself nearly enough to pick out hardware for her as I'd like it to be perfect (for 400 pounds lol! Sorry I'm not richer!), Thanks for anyone that can help, [link] [comments] |

Help with buying through reddit? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:12 AM PST Hi everyone! I've never bought anything through Reddit before and I don't think there's a better place to ask than here. So this guy is selling his Alienware 17 r5 gtx 1060 for $150, which I think is a really good deal, but at the same time, I think the price is too good to be true. He said that it's basically brand new but all he did was benchmark it and that it ran 110 fps playing far cry. I honestly don't know much about laptops, but if you were buying a laptop from someone online, what would be some important questions to ask about the laptop? And how would you actually pay them but at the same time make sure you don't get scammed? Edit: these are the pictures he sent: https://m.imgur.com/a/r4RKX29 https://m.imgur.com/a/zKOc7m3 https://m.imgur.com/a/zQZ400W [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 07:52 AM PST Hi people, I would like to some thoughts on which you would recommend for me between these 2 units: >purpose: coding, development (mainly Android) >How long I plan to keep it for: at least 4-5 years >Specs I'm looking for: 8th gen intel core i5 or above, SSD, 8 memory or above, good build quality >budget including tax: $1100 CAD Which one do you recommend and why? Or what do you think about these brands compared to each other? Using a Laptop Display as a secondary monitor? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:33 PM PST Is it possible to do this with wired technology? IE- not using Miracast or Moonlight, or any streaming software. I want to output my Desktop PC to my HP x360 Spectre, maily to utilize the touch functionality, but like every laptop, it has no HDMI-in, no Display Port-in, etc. Laptops typically only have output sources, no input. All the guides suggest you set it up wirelessly, but then you have a quality downgrade among an array other issues. I tried spacedesk, and my laptop cursor is like 5cm away from where I place my finger on the screen. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:47 AM PST I found the hp omen 15 gaming laptop' s graphics listed as gtx 1070. However, when I went to the hp website, the same product indicates a gtx 1070 max-q graphics card The same issue, MSI S65. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=9SIA7AB8AA9536 So my question is, are these laptops running a FULL gtx 1070? Trying to decide between matebook x pro / macbook air (2018) Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:47 AM PST I'm going to be doing very light usage on the laptops, like Netflix, document editing, etc. I do not expect to do any work, the laptop will mostly be meant for traveling / entertainment uses. So with that out of the way, I'm not sure which one to pick. The Matebook has amazing value for the money, but I've always used Windows and I'm itching to try something new (I have a gaming PC for other heavy usage). However the Mackbook Air doesn't have that good specs for the price. The one I'm considering is the 8GB / 128GB version for the Air. Do you think that's a good idea? Like I mentioned, it's going to be used very lightly, maybe once a week. And also the resale value of Macbooks means I'll get some money back years down the line. What do you guys think would be a good choice for a laptop for at least 5 years? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Buying an Aero 15 that was on display? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:23 AM PST Hello everyone! I was looking to buy an Aero 15, but my local store has none in stock, only a display model that according to their words has been up for a bit more than a week. In any other scenario I would have just ordered one from them and waited for a few weeks. However, the Aero 15 can have some backlight bleed issues, and the store rep told me that they don't consider backlight bleed an issue and I will have to pay a 10% restocking fee if I want to exchange a unit with bad backlight bleed. The on display unit seems fine to me, no backlight bleed, fans run fine, etc. Do you think it's work the risk? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Buying a used dell 15 700 or asus tuf 504gd Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:38 AM PST I am debating of buying one of those two labtops. Its going to be used for light gaming and movies. Both are 500 bucks. Which one would you recommend. [link] [comments] |
XPS 13 9360 vs Matebook x pro (UK) Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:46 AM PST Hello, I need a wee bit of advice about these laptops so thank you for reading. I ordered an XPS 13 in the black Friday sales, thinking it was a 9370. Spec wise - i7 (8th gen), 16gb ram, 512gb hd, 4k screen with a 4 year accidental damage warranty for £1350. I thought this was a very good price. It turns out however that it is a 9360 (not indicated anywhere on the advert). I have been using it over the past couple of days and I'm not loving it - coil whine/fan noise is very obtrusive, and the speakers are terrible. It is also quite thick - thicker than my old 2014 yoga 2 pro that I'm replacing. Otherwise however the screen is great and it is very quick. So, I was wondering about returning it and getting a Matebook X pro. This looks really beautiful and is very well reviewed. However it is quite a lot more expensive on a like-for-like basis to the dell I received. I'd probably get the i5, 8gb, 256gb hd, mx150 graphics for £1100 as the i7 version to me doesn't seem worth it. My reluctance for the matebook X pro is the absence of 16gb ram and the lack of additional warranty beyond 1 year (buying via Amazon UK). This is quite offputting, considering my current laptop was expensive and has basically died within 4 years. Dell will give me 5% off the xps if I do keep it. I'm in two minds. Basically, what would you do? I am also open to other model suggestions, and could wait until January sales too. My uses (in order) are general browsing, video, office, lightroom and occasional gaming. Thanks a lot! [link] [comments] |

Help with Predator Helious 300 2018 Cooling Problems. Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:13 AM PST Hi, I'm having issues with my Predator Helious Cooling. I'll be playing games like world of warcraft or CS:GO and my game will randomly drop to 25-35 frames and stutter terribly. This normally occurs after an hour or 2 of use and it is alot more prevalent in CS:GO then World of Warcraft. It'll happen maybe 3 to 4 times in an hour in WoW but almost every other round in CS:GO. Its primary only these two games where I see this happen. I'm assuming its the CPU bottle necking from heat but I'm not sure. Would a cooling pad help with these issues or is there another solution I could do to avoid this happening? I doubt its a hardware issue in relation to my CPU/Graphics card strength since I have a I7-8450 and a 1060 6GB. Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Is the Porsche Design Book One worth it today for $1099? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 05:10 PM PST Adorama seems to have this for $1099. At the original $2500 MSRP this was obviously a bad deal, however at $1099 (with no taxes thanks to Adorama) it looks pretty sweet.
It's also a premium-looking 2-in-1 that seems to convert pretty well and includes a Wacom pen (though I personally don't care about tablet mode and would ideally prefer a regular clamshell design). Thoughts? I'm looking for a nice couch device (primarily use my desktop, don't care about gaming on the laptop, have a 1080Ti on the desktop). I was looking at the XPS13 as well, but it's more expensive for 16GB of RAM specs, and the Acer Swift 7, but it's slower. Care about snappy performance, a nice screen, and a small form-factor (don't want anything larger than 14 inches or significantly heavier). Can I do better? [link] [comments] |
What's your view on this HP Pavilion? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:40 AM PST https://www.paradigit.nl/hp-pavilion-15-cw0500nd/20892143/product/11566 I got it for about €560 last week but I haven't heard about AMD GPUs and processors in a while since I'm out of the loop. I'll be using it mostly for office and hopefully some light gaming. [link] [comments] |
Not sure which Legion Y530 I should get Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:52 AM PST I pretty much decided to get a Legion Y530. I want to use it for uni work and light gaming (League of Legends). I'll play LoL daily, but having a decent gpu, I might want to try some other games. I'll never play any AAA titles, but maybe I'll play csgo, minecraft and stuff like that again at some point. I looked at the following offers:
After some research I think I have an idea what VRAM means but I still don't know if 2GB are enough. They probably are for League, but I also read people saying that you should always go with 4 at least. I don't know if that's worth the price in my situation though. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:04 AM PST Hey fellas, I've a MSI PS42(i7-8550u) laptop and today i re-installed Windows 10. Before the formatting procedure, i've been able to use Intel XTU no problem(undervolting ftw!). But now i can't install the thing. It says "Attempted to install on an unsupported platform." then gives the "0x80070643 - Fatal error during installation." message before it closes. I've looked around and couldn't find any info on the issue. Any solutions to this problem ? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Is there one brand to rule them all? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:17 PM PST Too long; won't read --- I want affordable (>$500), decent battery life (>3 hours), 2-3 USB ports, HDMI port, internal Bluetooth, and Windows OS sans bloatware. Does such a laptop exist? I've gone more than a few laptops over the last 10 years. A Toshiba, two Dell, two Asus, and one Lenovo. I hate computers that are loaded with their branded-bloatware or whatever the current buzz word is for anything that isn't just a Windows OS-run system. Dell is high on my list for those, so unless something has changed I will not buy one again. I liked Asus but their batteries are horrible. I'm in the middle of transferring everything from my last Asus laptop's HDD to my Lenovo which got promoted to my primary. Not sure what happened but it was blue-screening all the time and finally won't boot to windows at all. I pulled the drive out of it to rescue my files. My other Asus has strangely been running for >5 years, but it only runs on AC.... the battery crapped out years ago. It's a smaller computer and has lost its pep. I'm surprised it's not already dead. So... what's good these days. I'm not looking to break the bank. [link] [comments] |
Is the ThinkPad Yoga 370 a good laptop? 256GB of SSD storage. Or ASUS UX461 ZenBook flip 512GB? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:59 AM PST The ThinkPad is currently half price $1199 whereas the ZenBook is full price $1899. ZenBook has more storage but don't know if I need all that. I'll only be using it to surf the web and play candy crush. It'll probably have some of my music and photos as well. But the thinkpad is half price! Down from $2449. I'm just not sure which is the better laptop. Thank you for any help. [link] [comments] |
[Buying Help] What computer should I buy? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 06:13 PM PST I am looking for a laptop no larger than 14" and want it to have windows 10. I am not so tech savvy and do not know much about computers so I am here seeking advice on some laptops to maybe help me narrow down my search. I just need it for school and possibly a couple low-spec games EDIT: I've been looking at the Huawei matebook are they any good? Also my budget is no more than $600, but preferably around $400 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:05 AM PST So it just undervolted my aero 15x with a 1070 max q. I just have a little concern with what msi after burner is showing me in terms of idle mhz is 139 and memory is 309. Is that because my laptop is just using the intel graphics or is there another meaning behind it. And how can I test my undervolting to see how it's doing so I change anything. (Sorry first time undervolting anything) [link] [comments] |
