Laptop for gaming and creative work

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:39 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000-1500 USD. Feel free to suggest laptops outside of this range! Hard cap is 2000USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be great but not a priority! 4-5hrs of battery would be great too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? from a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being very important, I'd say 8. I'd really like to have it on my backpack while i commute.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 is enough

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe CC - Ps, Ai, Ae, Lr, Pr CAD - Fusion 360, Rhino, Modo, Keyshot Autodesk Sketchbook I usually play indie games, mobas on my laptop but I'd like to more graphic heavy games in the future (ex. warcraft reforged, destiny, pc ports)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Indie games, MOBAs, warcraft, destiny

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? * SD card slot, HDMI, 3 USB ports, Touch screen is a plus but not needed

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I sparingly use all the applications mentioned above some more than others because I'm still learning them (ie modo, ae, rhino). I definitely game currently but hopefully with the next laptop I could play more games. I've been doing my research on whether I should i get a laptop with a quadro or gtx but I get so lost that I cant make a decision. I've been looking at the Gigabyte Aero, Razer 15 and MSI GS65 but also hoping to find something cheaper. I've been checking out Dell XPS and some lenovo thinkpads but they arent as adept in gaming. Im really just hoping for a good balance between those two sets of laptops!

2-in-1 with high quality pen functionality?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:14 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $1000-$1400 AUD (around $720-$1000 USD) - can flex a bit. Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1. Preferrably a Wacom EMR Digitizer for the Pen. Preferrably an IPS monitor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat. As long as it weighs similarly to most 2 in 1s.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows. May dual-boot with Linux if possible, but not a priority.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

12-14" range. Again, like most 2 in 1s.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Blender is the #1 priority. I would like to be able to work on low-frequency sculpts. Photoshop CC would also be a priority, but knowing how heavy it is, I'm prepared to learn Affinity instead. Programs I also use which would be cool, but not high priority for this 2 in 1: Substance Painter, 3D Coat, Unreal Engine 4, Premiere/Vegas, possibly zBrush.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not a high priority at all. Whatever emulation can take best advantage of the CPU without throttling. I like using software like Moonlight to stream my Desktop PC's output to other devices in the network for games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A high quality, reliable pen for drawing input. Already specified Wacom EMR preferred, but I can't seem to find a list of devices that support that. Also obviously want the ability to sync my Desktop PC's output into the 2 in 1's monitor. Those are the only real priorities.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The Wacom Mobile Station is obviously way out of my price range. The Samsung Galaxy Book seems the logical option, but I've heard mixed things about it: AMOLED screen resulting in burn in, dodgy battery, limited ports, short lifespan, etc. The Surface Pro 6 initially appealed to me, until I started hearing about the pen, and how the slow linework is terrible (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqWMtz4lv0s)

Looking for a decent laptop that will be able to do most things. $1500 - $2000

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:22 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 2000 AUD. Australia
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? In terms of weight, I don't really mind as long as its not too heavy, but in relation to thinness, the weight should be low anyways. In terms of thinness I don't mind too much if its on the thicker side, as long as its not like a brick.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows with a possibility of dual booting with Linux.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefer on the bigger side like 15.6 inch.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly will be for gaming and for school related stuff, but should be able to run some higher demanding games like Black Ops 4. I also use Blender and FL Studio from time to time.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I regularly play World of Warcraft nowadays, I'd prefer to run WoW at around Medium-High with a minimum average of 60+ FPS majority of the time. While other games such as ARK, Black ops 4, Starcraft 2, CSGO and Overwatch at atleast medium graphics with 60+ FPS average.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent build quality is important as I will be travelling often and It will probably be hit against something eventually.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. There will be times where I'll be out for long periods of time and I won't be able to charge my laptop then, so I really need a laptop with a long battery life, usually around 6-8 hours will suffice. During this period I'll be using it for light work such as internet browsing, coding, watching videos and listening to music simultaneously.

    Work laptop, UK, £500

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:00 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Buying in the UK, budget up to £500 unless I am convinced otherwise to spend (a very little) more

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I do not need a 2 in 1 form factor. Specs and screen size most important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I will be lugging it around the country from courtroom to courtroom as I am a lawyer, but I have so much kit with me any way (a bloody wig and gown!) that weight and thinness are in no way determinative

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger the better, 15" ish would be good

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. 90% of the time will be Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat for opening word docs and pdfs, and general browsing. If I am bored on a train, and the laptop can handle it, I may install something relatively light like Rimworld, but please don't take gaming into account.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above - gaming unimportant

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I do not need a touch screen or optical drive. Good input devices would be very much preferred, especially keyboard. I do not want to use one of those "nub" style mice that sits in the middle of a keyboard. They are truly horrible. A USB input would be good potentially so I could use an external mouse. I would prefer an SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have seen this laptop for sale, but know little about the Ryzen chips: https://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-15-db0010na-15-6-Inch-Full-Laptop/dp/B07HPRXNYN

hi, looking for a laptop that have similar specs to Asus' SCAR 2, one with preferably less shouty design (good screen is a must), as i'm going to use it as my work computer too. I already seen the Aero 15X, but backed down on choosing it due to seemingly high report of problems.

Questions about the Razer Blade 15"

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:29 PM PST

Hi. I've wanted to buy a new laptop for a long time now, and I really don't want to wsi until the next release of CPU or GPUs anymore. Ive been looking for something powerful, lightweight, and sleek. Something I can play on but also something that won't embarrass me in public. Anyways I've settled for the Razer Blade 15".

The version I will most likely be buying is the GTX 1060 with 60 Hz screen. I wish I could go for the GTX 1070 w/ 144Hz screen, but the former is already pushing my budget.

I've been reading about it and there are many different views on this laptop (and razer in general) . They suffer from problems that may need to be RMAd which is very conserving. But in Linus video he mentioned that the newest 2018 are fine? Basically should I be staying away from Razer?

They also have some issues with heating, an dive considered buying Conductonaut, but I don't know how long liquid metal lasts. Some say it only lasts like 6 month to max 18 before it ruins the cooling unit as the metals corrode or something. I would like this laptop to be a long term purchase of at least 5-7 years. Should I not apply liquid metal?

    Thanks in advance

Best Laptop for mobile / remote work?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:01 AM PST

I want to buy a very powerful tower-pc for my home office. Sometimes though I need to work when I'm not at home, so I'd need also a Laptop (or even a Tablet?).

    Basic requirements:

    - As I'm not using a external mouse, it should have a decent touchpad (á la MacBook).
    - Screen shouldn't be too small, so I can have 2 windows opened side by side (ie Browser + Document)

What's the best Laptop for mobile work that doesn't cost too much?

    "Helpful Form":

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      • ~500€, Germany
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • Screen shouldn't be too small, so I can have 2 windows opened side by side (ie Browser + Document)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • nope. mainly development (web, java, ...)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • no gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • good keyboard, good touchpad, highest resolution possible without breaking the budget

Looking for a decent laptop to get me through college and help with editing, $800 budget

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 06:09 PM PST

To start off, I really don't know anything about computers. I'm a senior in high school and gonna go into college next year, and I'm looking for a good reliable laptop that'll last for a couple years. My main priority is schoolwork, but I'm also looking to get into basic animation and video editing as a hobby. I don't really like the way most gaming laptops look but other than that I don't have any other preferences. Thanks.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800, Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery life would be ideal

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important, but would prefer a lighter laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video and photo editing, Adobe Premier

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not really looking to get into gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like the laptop to run as smooth as possible without any technical issues for as long as possible

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows or Mac

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mostly need this laptop to code on the go while I'm away from my PC. Would like to be able to test out the 3D games on the laptop if possible. Not too big of a deal as I can just test everything on my pc. Open to trying out the new MB pro 15 with the Vega 20. Apple's build quality and reliability has me drawn in. HP and dell aren't my favorite but I'm open to suggestions.

    Laptop suggestion

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:38 PM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I'm currently unsure which one is the best buy between Asus Zenbook UX430UA and Dell Inspiron 13 7000.

I'm a music student (using programs like Sibelius), I produce and record music (mostly with Ableton live, therefore in need of minimum 8gb of RAM) and I also use Photoshop for college work.

I previously bought a cheap laptop that now is almost collapsed and I am tired of slow machines and poor performances so I decided to treat myself with a good piece of gear this time. I would probably go for the Asus Zenbook pro 14 but it's over my budget so I have to choose between the two mentioned laptops, what is your suggestion?

Do you think there might be another product I should check before making the final decision?

    Thank you very much!

    Paul.

    Gaming Laptop under $1500 USD

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:11 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 USD is my max. I live in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm looking for Specs, but I would love a decent battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I have back issues, and while I won't carry the laptop a ton, there will be times I travel with it. I'd prefer under 6 pounds.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 Inches. I find 17 inches too big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Witcher 3, Fallout 4/76, RDR2 - I prefer to run games on High settings at least.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like it to have a decent built in camera. I have to do a lot of video conferencing and I hate having to plug in another camera. I would love a touch screen as it's what I have now, but it's not a deal breaker.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current computer is a Lenovo Yoga 710 15ISK. Anything I get must have better specs in terms of RAM and Graphic Card to be worth it to me.

suggestions for a general use around $500 laptop

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:55 PM PST

I'm looking for a general use laptop for cheap. I don't have too many requirements. Touchscreen, number pad on keyboard, and backlit keyboard. That's it. I'll be primarily web surfing. Occasional use of Word and Excel. And I'd like to be able to use some online programs that help with house design. Nothing fancy. Just those easy to use block planners where you can move and resize a bunch of squares on a 2d sheet and add in little spaces for windows, doors, etc. Nothing 3d. (Something like Room Sketcher although I'm not sure since I only have regular access to a phone so I haven't been able to test out the sites yet.) I'm not sure if this is possible on my budget though.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* USA. Under $500

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Best specs. 2in1 not needed. Battery life not important

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Doesn't matter

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* The bigger the better

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* No gaming. Mostly general use. May run some house floor plan programs online similar to Room Sketcher.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* No gaming

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Touchscreen, backlit keyboard, number pad on keyboard

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* Will be building a house soon so I will probably use some online programs to design rooms. No 3d stuff, Just moving squares around. Laptop will be plugged in and stationary most of the time.

Looking for a good looking, thinner the better aluminum ultralaptop that is sexy to the touch and eyes

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:46 PM PST

I used to own an Asus Zenbook UX305FA-USM1. I liked it a lot. Well designed, aluminum chassis felt great, and had 'enough' performance for my web browsing habits.

I unfortunately shorted out the board when I was cleaning the keyboard.

I'm looking for something cool and sexy. Questionnaire time:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to $1200. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I do not like 2 in 1. I don't want a convertible laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? EXTREMELY

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Less than 15 to go along with the weight and thinness I'm looking for.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, nothing heavy. Large excel files would be the heaviest thing I'll be doing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would prefer a higher resolution than 1920X1080 screen. I don't need a touchscreen and actually prefer not to have one as I think they just attract fingerprints. I don't need many or any ports. Usually the only thing I'll plug in is a mouse. Most of my usage is web browsing, office products, etc..

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't need the most powerful machine. See my last laptop as the UX305FA-USM1. I would like a nicer screen to go along with the sexiness of the laptop and that generally comes with a higher performance laptop. My biggest things are the form factor, feel in the hands, and overall sexiness.
