I have all but given up hope with Bluetooth earbuds Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:53 AM PST For about a year and half, I have been using Bluetooth earbuds with my Android phones. You know, might as well adapt to the trend, right? To begin my foray into Bluetooth audio, I bought some Anker Sound buds Slim earbuds for $25. All in all, not a terrible experience especially given the price. I like the sound, the fit, and the convenience. One particular quirk, however, has been driving me slowly insane. When crossing certain intersections in my area, NYC, the connection will go bonkers. Like an old school antenna. This happens every now and then in other places too. The phone doesn't matter- LG G6, Pixel- same thing. Once Black Friday came around, I looked into getting something nicer to accompany me and my Pixel 3 XL. After doing some research, I settled on the Jabra Elite 65t earbuds. Discounted to $119 from $169, no wires, and Bluetooth 5.0. I thought my problems were solved. Welp, no. Same freaking problem that I had with $25 earbuds. Cross the street, connection goes bonkers. So now I'm returning my Jabra Elites and starting back and square one. I really expected to not have this issue with newer, higher quality buds. But at this point I might consider just using my wired USB C buds that came with my Pixel and calling it a day. My wife has none of these problems with her iPhone 7 and Airpods. As much as I tout my Pixel, this is getting embarrassing. [link] [comments]

Why doesn't android have a separate section for persistent notifications yet? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:02 AM PST Persistent notifications at times come in way, especially those whose sole purpose is to keep the app running. Having those in a separate section/tab within the notification area would be a nice way to clean the notification area for the important stuff. Seems like such a simple solution but it's never been applied or even talked about. I don't know if its that complicated or is it not a problem for others, unlike me? [link] [comments]

PSA: Be extra careful trading your phone in for a Pixel 3. Posted: 27 Nov 2018 06:36 AM PST Myself along with several others had experienced issues when trading in before for the Pixel 2 where the 3rd party google has contracted to handle the trade-ins. Some were lost and others identified the wrong phone altogether. Personally we had traded in a Pixel 1 only for them to tell us it was a completely different phone and only offer half the trade-in value we were supposed to get. You're better off probably selling your phone outright. Edit: A fair number of you had no issues with trade-ins. I think that's awesome and glad you got the value you deserved. This post is meant as a warning for anyone considering it that there's a very real possibility their experience might not be as smooth. I wish all of ours was, but sadly when Google hires a crappy 3rd party to handle it, mistakes are going to happen. It's just really frustrating they don't really do anything about it. My Pixel 2XL -> Pixel 3 (non XL) experience Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:28 PM PST A few weeks ago my wife's phone fell in the floor at a bad angle, and regardless of the cover the screen and the display resulted seriously damaged. It was a Note 8 that now sells for 450 euros here, and repairing it was going to cost around 250. Since as an owner of a Pixel 2 XL I found myself completely satisfied *but* for the too large size, we decided to go for a double upgrade: my yet quite new and good Pixel 2 XL was going to be her phone (she was a bit tired of Samsung nonsense and likes big phones), and I was going to get a new Pixel 3 (non XL). That's what we did, and after a few weeks I can try to summarize a comparison between the two phones. The good things: * Yes, the size is better for me. 5.5" sounds like the magic spot for a comfortable phone that is not embarrassing for me to put in my pocket. It is also *kinda* usable with one hand, for sure more than the Pixel 2XL, but hardly a truly one-hand phone like the 4" iPhone 4 was for instance. * The screen looks definitely an upgrade from the 2XL. It is clear that colors are more vibrant and it looks like capable of more bright. However the problem with that is that often the phone display is brighter then I would it to be: while the 2XL eventually learned very well my settings, this one looks like setup to be anyway brighter. It is disappointing for two reasons: because I want it dimmer and because I suspect that this setup has something to do with the not great battery life (see later). * The camera is awesome. In the 2XL I used the modified "camera3" with certain backported features from the Pixel 3 camera, but the superzoom resolution here is quite impressive. Also it looks like that post processing has kinda of an edge, also because of this ability to take multiple photos and select the best one (which I've enabled), but more so because HDR quality seems better in this phone for some reason (but I'm not sure if this is just an impression also due to the better display). Another improvement in the camera is the processing time. The 3 is faster at processing images, and is very comfortable to have the extra speed. The neutral things: * I'm using wireless charging since I had a few wireless chargers around the house because of past Samsung phones. Works well but it's not a feature that is super important to me. * I'm in Italy so Duplex is not available and I imagine it will come very later. Also I don't care about the feature right now, but maybe I'll change my mind once it will be available. * Still never used the wide selfies mode after a few weeks… Kinda of an hint that it's not going to be the killer feature of this phone for me. The bad things: * The battery life is noticeable shorter than the one in my 2XL, even if I don't get so bad results as some other people are mentioning. Right now after 3:45 of screen on time, disconnected this morning at 8AM, now that is 10:30PM I still have 23% of battery. This means that it's a phone that can easily drive me through the day. However… with the 2XL this 23% would be 40%. The difference is the one between having to charge the phone if you have night plans, or not. However I adapted and if I know I may need it, I connect it for 30 minutes in the middle of the day and that's it. * It's not quite of an upgrade. Now the Pixel 2XL sells at 450 euros in Italy while this one costed me around 800 IIRC. Now I feel a but stupid: a better plan was to just get another 2XL for my wife… because what I *really* won here was a phone that is a bit smaller, but has also a smaller battery. It other stuff are a bit better too, but the 2XL is a very solid device, and for the price that it has now, it provides a lot more value for money. * Maybe it's the cover that is a bit different, but it looks like that the fingerprint sensor is a bit less effective to react. Especially if I try to show the notification by swiping on the sensor. In general it is a great device that does not bug me as Samsung devices stupid software did in the past, and is not as lame as the iPhone X that I tried for a few weeks (and sold later) in order to have again the "Apple experience" to see if, after N years, they were still mostly a status symbol thing or if really the experience was much better than Android devices (is not IMHO). The Pixel 2XL is currently a very great value offer for the price. People wanting the Pixel 3 should probably wait a few months to get some serious discount. [link] [comments]
Opinion: Samsung has the best type of Android software. Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:38 PM PST Samsung phones are just a pleasure to use. I currently have the S8+ and have had it shortly after it launched. I surprisingly never had any cracks or problems and just don't think it's worth upgrading to the Note 9. The more I use it, the more I hate iOS and even other android phones like LG's and Google Pixels. The display is great, video enhancer is awesone too as well as lots of other sick features. I really think Samsung did an excellent job on the Secure Folder app, it's just so great! Does anyone think that other android superphones are better than Samsung's flagship phones and why? (Please don't base your answer off specs, the camera or price.) The android competition has had a tough time trying to keep up and it now seems like Apple is really struggling. It may have become obvious to mere fools that Apple is completely ripping it's customers blind. It was always clear but Apple went to far with all the iPhone X's. They actually started making iPhone X's again as they're cheaper to manufacture and lowered the iPhone XR's price in Japan. Still not sure how $749 USD is considered a budget phone. Duplex/Call Screening with Own Voice Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:57 AM PST I wonder if there will ever come a time when we are able to train Google duplex or the call screening feature with our own voice. It could include a message saying that this is a synthesize voice for all those legal reasons. But I think it would greatly decreased the number of hang ups when using the call screening feature and would make the whole process a lot more personable. [link] [comments] |
