Thinking of Downgrading to Windows 98 SE SP2

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:22 AM PDT

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a new computer soon and it - of course - will have Windoze 10. Can I just install Windows 98 SE SP2 on it?

I don't care about the quality of life changes introduced in W10. I just hate it. I don't care about the finer details around telemetry - I just don't want Windows tracking me while I'm doing my Google searches, Facebook posting, or Amazon purchasing. I once saw an icon for Candy Crush that was uninstalled with one click. Even though it was gone, it still had me angry for days.

Microsoft is forcing Windows 10 down our throats and there doesn't seem to be any kind of open source alternative. Therefore, my only hope is Win 98 SE SP2.

    How do I do?

Thinking of downgrading to Microsoft Bob.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 10:01 AM PDT

I can't find a way to put a calendar in the center of my screen like MS Bob so using Windows 10 is out of the question. MS Bob. Also, since my name is Bob IRL it just works.

Does anyone know where I can find a 5.25 drive and floppies so I can install.

Need to know some Microsoft replacements (or Microsoft friendly replacements) for some apps I use.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 11:21 AM PDT

I want to get into the Microsoft ecosystem and wanted to know the appropriate app replacements to do so, what could I use instead of:

    • Google Maps

    • Google Photos (I like the no cap on photos uploaded at a lower quality feature)

    • Google Assistant

    • Chrome (Edge was really slow for me since I open a lot of tabs)

    • Camscanner (I like this but how does it compare to Office Lens?)

    • Google Play Books

    Microsoft Edge not syncing

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 02:03 AM PDT

    Hey folks,

is there a way to force synchronisation on Edge? I'm having massive issues with it, everything else seems to sync just fine after clean installations.

Also is there a way to disable autocorrect on Edge? It honestly drives me insane if I want to write in English and Edge thinks it just has to correct it into German...

    Windows server security monitoring tools

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 11:17 AM PDT

Hello. I have a question. Is there any software for windows and windows server which shows for example logged, relogged or is currently logged on admin or other account for example via RDP? I would need like to ask about software which monitors every tiny detail as much as possible. I know there is event logger, but it's not so precise for me. For example. Showing ip of logged user, date, time, etc. Thank you

How to name tracks when burning a CD-R with Windows Media Player (Win10)?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Hey everyone, just a very quick question. I'm burning some music onto a cd to play in the car. I select Audio CD and record at 24x speed (heard that slower recording speed == higher quality). I've named all the tracks and placed it onto the burn list. The songs looked somthing like this:

    01 Daftendirekt.mp3, 02 Revolution 909.mp3, 03 Da Funk.mp3 etc etc.

After I burn them all onto the disc, I check to see the disc's contents.

To my grand dissapointment, I don't seen the names I gave to the disc! I see Track 1.cda, Track 2.cda, Track 3.cda. Aww... that's so boring when I play them on the car stereo speaker and I just see "Playing Track x" instead of playing the cool name I assigned to the song.

So, how do I fix this problem of mine? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Windows 8: How do I make the APPs non full screen

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:33 AM PDT

On my windows 8 I have various apps, under other the finance app and the settings app etc... Whenever I open them they cover my whole screen and doesn't allow me to make them non full screen (AKA restore down), or move them away with the mouse. Can someone tell me if there is something like the "classic start menu" modification, that would allow me to treat them like normal windows windows? I think they could be useful but the way they take over my whole screen is simply annoying.

    Thanks for any help!

    Bluescreen after windows logo.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:46 PM PDT

Im running windows 7 on my laptop, all of a sudden i started getting a bluescreen right after windows logo, tried booting into safe mode, didn't work, but what's even worse, is, when i tried booting windows 7 installer from a usb, it gave me a black screen with a mouse pointer in the middle, tried booting windows 8, gave me a bluescreen, i tried all kinds of flashing using rufus and windows to usb official tool, tried some windows dvds, didn't work either, nothing is working, and my only option seems to be, pulling the hard drive out of my laptop, can somebody shed some insight on me before i make that decision. My specs are: Hp pavilion 16 Intel core i7-4500u cpu @ 1.80ghz 8 gb of ram " probably ddr 3 " Gforce 740n

[Win8.1] Simplest way to update backup by checking for duplicate files

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:51 PM PDT

So, I have a HDD completely dedicated on media, and I've been backing it up on an external disk by simply deleting the old files and moving the new ones in. Today I though that it would take less time if I just moved the new files, so that the disk wouldn't have to delete and write mostly same files again. The problem was that when I tried to copy the up to date files to the backup drive that still had the old files, windows declared that I didn't have enough space, meaning that it just hadn't checked it for duplicates.

Is there any simple way to do this by first checking duplicates and then copying only the new files? I know there's File History but it looks rather complicated half-automatic system. I'd rather prefer the simplest solution, like a batch file on my desktop that I can click when I want to update the backup. Is there a command for this kind of operation? Or should I just use File History?

Icon for changing screen brightness disappeared after October update

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:49 AM PDT

After updating to the latest version of windows, I noticed that the icon found when clicking the battery that allowed me to change brightness, disappeared and I was left only with the power save one.

I can still change brightness in the setting or by putting the icon in the notification tab, but I would like to fix that if possible, without resetting my system. I have already tried with cmd and scandisk but that didn't help. Another weird problem is that sometimes my screen doesn't display the right brightness when I turn it on; with this I mean that it says 75% for example, but it's actually brighter and I need to change the brightness, even by little, for it to show the correct brightness.

    Thinking of downgrading to semi-cultist

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 12:49 PM PDT

I mean, I like Windows 10, but I just don't think we work well together at all. I know these are forbidden words on this sub but... but... I actually like Windows 8.1 over 10.

Please don't send Satya Nadella after me as Im pretty sure he hates me more than he hates Windows.

Please don't send subreddit police after me. I know I said a forbidden statement but please I just want to live!

How come everything seems blurry-er when I'm using HDMI as opposed to when I'm using DVI?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:29 AM PDT

I wanted to use HDMI so I could use my monitors speakers, but its almost as if I'm using.. idk, fucking SCART.. text gets blurry, pixels are faded..

My monitor isn't even an old model, its a Samsung SyncMaster 2494..

I tried fiddling with the settings, both monitor-wise and in Window but to no avail..

    share a drive

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:50 AM PDT

I have two computers on a network. One desktop and one laptop. I'm trying to share my media drive in the desktop like I used to. But I'm no longer able to. My laptop cant even see the shared drive. The only way to connect to it is to enter in the network location. But even then i'm just told that my network password is incorrect. Despite having turned off network password protection.

I feel like I'm missing something big. But google isnt helping and my normal method of hit the share button and everything works isnt working.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Some disk errors - advice appreciated

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:24 AM PDT

I booted and got a message that I should reboot for disk repair. Machine is almost 5 years old.

So afterwards I found that Windows is damaged in weird ways. Some parts seem missing, but the computer still runs. The only browser I can still use is Firefox but my copy is a couple years old and I'm afraid of what might happen if I try to upgrade. Otherwise it seems to work just fine. Chrome launches but can't connect to the Internet. Edge won't launch at all. From the command line, nslookup works fine but ping won't recognize domains.

Doing a "virgin" install might be the best option. One reason I hesitate is because I would lose my legal copy of Office 2016, which seems to still work (at least Word does).

Would it be possible to just re-install the OS? On Microsoft's website they have a "tool" for downloading and reinstalling. I tried that and it just hung. Supposedly I could use that on another machine and burn the image to a DVD (haven't done that in years). In that case, would it recognize the license? Or for that matter, with a clean install? I don't recall having created a Microsoft account, were they doing that 5 years ago?

Sorry this is a rambling post as it's not easy to explain in 10 words or less, but any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

WDF_VIOLATION, driver not inside driver store. How do you "boot from USB into Windows?"

    Posted: 20 Oct 2018 11:19 PM PDT

I'm getting a blue screen on my HP laptop for the recent october WDF_Violation error. The fix from Microsoft seems to delete a driver in the driverstore folder, but mine is not there when I'm in CMD in the recovery environment.

I was told to boot from USB into Windows. I am in the recovery environment but do not see a way to boot into Windows. Am I interpreting that correctly? When I choose to exit and boot TO Windows it seems to boot from my hard drive, as it's still bluescreening. How else can I fix the WDF error?
