Will a "GTX 1060 6G" be a good gift for a gamer wanting to build a new PC tower? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:48 AM PDT My boyfriend, John (27), is an avid gamer and programmer. He will periodically tell me about his future plans to upgrade his now sub-par tower, and dreams about playing all the newest games on the market his current PC can't run. As his birthday is coming up I thought I'd surprise him by gifting him a graphics card for his new build. It would be a starting point for his new PC that he would be able to build around. I've found this GPU, a **MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G**. It's on the more expensive side for me *but* I'm willing to pay for it if it will hold up for the next couple of years. I don't build PCs and I don't know anything about specs. Is this graphics card a good option, or should I get him something else? [link] [comments]
Why do I feel like people dont know how to handle PSU's? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:45 AM PDT I'm checking the reviews of some of the top tier PSUs(for fun, already got my EVGA G2)and you always get the guy who burned through 2-3 powersupply, nearly set his PC on fire or fried his components. Now,I know that getting a dud happen(Once got a PSU that sounded like a grinder),but I feel like there's definetly some mishandling or people playing frankenstein with the cables. Windows sees 32GB, BIOS sees 16GB Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:45 AM PDT I have just put together a Ryzen 2700X, Asus ROG Strix X470F and 32GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM ( CMR32GX4M4C3000C15). I'm running Win 10 64 bit and my BIOS is updated to the latest version. My BIOS is showing a max of 16GB of memory but when I look at the speed info for each slot it shows all four sticks at 8GB each. Windows shows 32GB but 16GB is hardware reserved. EDIT: it seems that the B channel (left hand) isn't working. Putting a single stick in B2 or two sticks in B1 and B2 results in a failure to POST. Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:21 AM PDT Hey everyone! Almost all my parts have arrived and I'm just wondering where I can learn on how to build my PC! Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:30 PM PDT Yes! No! Maybe! What? Let's take a moment and think about this. Something new and big is always coming out soon, because technology advances fast. There isn't a "prime" time to buy parts because the pc market changes fast without any warning. For example, GPU prices rose dramatically when mining was in its prime, RAM prices went up due to a shortage, and now we're seeing prices in CPU rise (Intel) due to shortages. Stop asking if it's the right time or if you should wait! If you have the money available and you have the need/want to buy the thing you're looking at then DO IT! Sure, you'll see a cheaper price probably in a few months but that's just how it is, and there's nothing you can do to predict the future. Nobody has a crystal ball here! All we can do is give you advice on the best parts for your PC for what you're looking for. Remember when everyone said, "wait for next gen Nvidia it should be releasing soon" and now everyone's complaining about the disappointment surrounding the 2000 series? Think about that! And maybe on an "opposite" note, buying something from last gen because a new gen came out doesn't mean that suddenly the last generation is rendered useless. Yes, your 1080 is going to last you a bit longer. That i7-6700k? Sure, it'll be fine for some while yet. So, let's just relax a bit. You don't need to worry about sniping deals at 6 am on Black Friday. Get some extra sleep and keep watch on r/buildapc or r/hardwareswap for some deals instead. And remember kids: BUYING USED IS OK!!!! [link] [comments]
Vertical GPU Mount in S340 Elite Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:36 AM PDT So having my nice white graphics card (ASUS Dual GTX 1060 6GB) facing down on my B&W build for the past few months had been bothering me. I wanted to mount it vertically in my GPU to show it off the white faceplate, but there is no vertical GPU compatibility with my case - the ever so popular NZXT S340 Elite. I got to googling and the cleanest option I found was to cut out the horizontal support pieces and fit a third party kit. So I purchased the CoolerMaster Vertical GPU Mount with the intent to mod my case. I cut out the horizontal card supports with a Dremel cutting tool, and the CoolerMaster kit fit like a charm. The screw holes even lined up with the existing holes on the case to attach the CoolerMaster kit. Here are some pics of the end result, I think it looks much better than the normal GPU mount. Attached a picture of the back of the case so that you can see how well the kit actually fits with the case. Worst part was trying to attach back all the cables after it was mounted - somehow the PCIE power pulled out of my PSU during installation. Why aren't modular PSU cables standardized? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:31 AM PDT I wanted to plug in my DVD drive to back up some old scratched PS1 games I have, so I grabbed a PSU cable from my organized, hanging cables. I plugged everything in, and I heard what I thought was normal disc drive noises, but soon realized was "popping". I flipped the power switch and unplugged everything. Sure as shit, I smelled that magic smoke from my DVD drive. How have PSU manufacturers not standardized modular cables yet? There's no reason why they can't be. It just makes life easier moving from one PSU to another, and it's one less headache for custom sleeved cable makers. Can someone please tell me how this makes sense? I bought an EVGA RTX 2070 instead of a GTX 1080 Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:28 PM PDT The only new GTX 1080s that cost less than the RTX 2070 I could find were the MSI Armor and the Zotac Amp! Edition. So I bought the EVGA for the same price. Was this a bad decision or is it about the same when the prices were literally the same. (550$). Having trouble getting a new video card to work Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:14 PM PDT Hello, I've been using a 2200g (APU) on an Asrock x470 Taichi without a dedicated GPU for a few months and just got an EVGA GTX 1070 and have not been able to get it to work. I used Display Driver Uninstaller to uninstall my AMD drivers in Safe Mode. I've tried both DP and HDMI cables from the new card but have not gotten any signal to the monitor and I've tried different PCIe slots along with using different power cables (and its positions on the PSU). The fans on the card haven't turned on either in any of the scenarios so could the card itself be faulty? It's brand new and straight from EVGA. What other steps should I take? CPU recommendation for GTX 960 2GB Posted: 30 Oct 2018 10:16 AM PDT Good evening! A friend of mine wants to get rid off his GPU mentioned in the title and I've thought, that I could use it for a little home PC. It would be mostly used for WoW BFA in 1080p, and as far as I know, the game doesn't really use more than four threads, but the single core performance is what really matters. I'd buy it on the second-hand market and I was thinking about a Ryzen 3 first gen or a Haswell i5. May I get some recommendations? Thank you in advance, Steve [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:43 PM PDT Hey guys it's me, the madlad who brought you the Toaster PC. A friend of mine liked it a lot and wanted to commission me to build one for her too. This time, I'm planning on doing it in a 2-slicer instead of a 4. I already know how to fit everything in (mobo back to back with GPU with CD drive in between, I/O on the back, PSU upright in front with power cord going out bottom), but I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible because her budget isn't huge and the games she plays aren't as demanding (DA Inquisition, Witcher 3, Mass Effect) as what I wanted a 1080ti in mine for. Is there any way I can shave this price down to closer to $1,000? Is the R5 2600 a good match for this GPU? I think the most obvious way to drop the price would be to get a cheaper GPU, is there something else that would be similarly powerful? I like the 1080 mini a lot, especially because it's basically the same price as the 1070 on Newegg lately. Keep in mind the GPU needs to stay at least under 180mm, preferably closer to 170 max. Also, I know the CPU cooler is a little overkill and a bit pricey, but I really the way it looks and would love to have some RGB on the cooler since I don't on the memory or any fans or anything. Does it make sense to switch from a gtx 1070 to Vega 64? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:17 PM PDT Hello, I have a gtx 1070 fe and play in 3440x1440p uwqhd. I'm considering to sell my gtx 1070 for 300€ and buy a vega 64 for 479 €. The Vega 64 is about 15 fps faster in the Games i play Do you think the switch is worth it or should I just wait for AMD navi late 2019 or a significant price drop on the gtx 2080 also maybe late 2019 ? Is it safe to keep an internal hard drive unmounted? Don’t seem to be getting the best out of my components. Setup maybe wrong? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:24 PM PDT Hello, I am new to building and semi finished my first build. I guess I'm not feeling that "PC master race" that everyone else feels. I know my hardware isn't high end but for some reason am I not getting the most out of my setup? I don't know how to overclock correctly so I haven't don't that. For reference. I am currently playing Forza Horizon 4 on ultra and I'm getting 45-50 FPS consistently. Shouldn't I be hitting 60? Maybe more? Are my expectations too high for my hardware? I'm a total noob and any help is greatly appreciate. Here is my PCparts list. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Did anyone else have buyer’s remorse after building their PC? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:52 AM PDT So I've been throwing around the idea of building a PC for two years. The last couple months I've researched components and made tons of builds on PC part picker. I finally pulled the trigger at the beginning of the month. I put everything together and everything works great. But I have a sinking feeling that I may have went way overboard on my purchase. The games I originally really wanted to play were Factorio and Rocket League, and I assumed once I bought my PC, that there'd be a ton of PC exclusives that need a super powerful build to run really well and I'd have a ton of fun. But now I built my PC and I'm not seeing a ton of games that really catch my eye. I really love factorio and playing with my friends, but I needed only the most basic machine to do that. I had the money, and it seemed the general advice on this sub was to try and build a really good PC if you can afford it, which I understand, but I guess I didn't ask myself whether I had the time and what games I really want to play on PC. Do any of you have advice on buyers remorse? Should I maybe just wait a few months and explore some different games and find something I enjoy? Most of my parts are within the return period, so I was considering returning the ones I can, and selling the compliments I can't return anymore. I think I'm worried I'm gonna end up not liking PC gaming as much as I thought, and my PC just sits in my basement unused for a year, and at that point it's lost half its value. Here is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tgvN9J [link] [comments]
Moved to new house, PC lights up then shuts down Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:07 PM PDT Troubleshooting Help:**What is your parts list? [Consider formatting your parts list.]PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. When I push the power button, PC lights up (motherboard LED, fan LED, fan spins, CPU spins, noise from PSU) for less than 1 second then shuts down. If I try to push it again nothing happens and I'll need to turn off my PSU and turn it back on. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I've tried moving RAM sticks around, removing RAM sticks. Replugging motherboard, replugging CPU cooler&CPU. After tampering with it for sometime it (with only CPU and motherboard plugged in) it worked. Thinking the problem was resolved, I added my SSD, HDD, and GPU then the same problem occurred. I can confirm the PSU works because I've tested it out with another computer. Post relevant photos of build/parts here. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/497564844015222784/506952150249766922/image0.jpg (sorry PC wires are messy, planning on working on them after I resolve my issue) Provide any additional details you wish below. GPU upgrade for a newer hardware based video encoder + push 144 fps a tad bit better Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:58 PM PDT I current use a R9 390 and the AMD VCE 2.0 seems to struggle in high action games. I would like to upgrade to a newer VCE. The setting that gives good quality is unwatchable while the balanced preset is very pixelated in high motion scenes on my R9 390. It's watchable but I would like better. I'm thinking about just upgrading to the RX 590 if its rumored to be better than the GTX 1060. Or maybe I should pick up a GTX 1070 used? I know in terms of gaming performance it's probably a side grade at best paired with a R5 2600 but I really want VCE 4.0 or Nvidia's HW based video encoding really bad since my R5 2600 can't stream while maintaining 144 fps(aka 90-100 fps framedips) it seems from testing. I figure I'll ask this sub if there are options I haven't seen yet in terms of upgrading. [link] [comments]

What would be the best upgrade for my pc to get more performance? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:48 PM PDT My pc specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/pagogo9742/saved/#view=QPGWXL Tbh i have no clue what my monitor is, i got it from my moms work. Its resolution is 1600x900, 60hz, 20 inch, dell, and it only has dvi daul channel and a vga port no HDMI. I bought my gtx 1050 ti a few months ago so i can play games and didn't get as much of a boost in performance as i had wished for, so im not really willing to buy a new gpu since i bought a new once recently. I'm going to upgrade it slowly over time so id like to know what would be the most essential parts to upgrade first, thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
