Need a laptop for gaming and art, budget is $800

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:54 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:**

Total Budget is $800, but it would be really neat if I could find something below the price rather than over. Will to bump it up to $900 if necessary. Located in the USA.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    It is not super important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Something at or above 15 inches.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I will be using Paint Tool Sai or Photoshop cs6 or Gimp. I would like to play Overwatch and Monster Hunter World, but mainly play games that don't have that steep of requirements, so this is not completely necessary.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I am almost completely ignorant to technical terminology, so I am really sorry about my vagueness on some of the statements.

My current Laptop is the Lenovo Yoga 11s, which is having some issues because of the age. The main thing I enjoyed about this laptop is the display and how quickly and smoothly it ran. However, the sound quality and the memory were hard to manage, as well as the hinge issues that came along with the way the laptop was built.

I would be ok with buying something I could upgrade later, but my laptop is nearing it's deathbed before I have to start replacing stuff on it.

Looking for 400-550 euro laptop (14-15") for data science, The Netherlands

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:40 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 400-550 Euros, The Netherlands

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 14-15 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm enrolled in Data Science courses, this is the reason for needing a new laptop. I need to be able to run R at reasonable speeds. Don't need insane speeds, just not the shitty speed that my current 5 year old laptop provides. As a second preference I do game a little, so would be nice if it could run LoL, but I think most laptops can.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? LoL, low settings, preferably >30 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I do often use HDMI-out, thats about it though.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

[USA][$1000-1700 USD] Looking for a gaming laptop recommendations

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:38 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000-1700 USD Country: USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. Laptop with the LEAST amount of issues. I see many laptops here that have tons of problems.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important as I have a portable laptop, but if you can talk about weight/build quality/heat disappation for recommendations, it would be appreciated

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15+ inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Many website tabs open at same time, excel/word/powerpoint. Some video editing but not primary purpose. More for gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? PUBG close to max FPS Blackops4

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nice keyboard Good build quality (need to be able to feel safe in putting it on checked baggage on many plane flights per month) No opinion on touch screen No opinion on finger print reader Nice webcam would be good (but most for laptops are poor quality)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My last gaming laptop was an Asus GL551. The chassis is falling apart, BSOD issues, pretty much dying.

I have a thinkpad carbon x1 for portable needs, but it isn't very good for gaming.

Do you think it is wise to try to wait for any black friday/cyber monday sales? Or doesn't really make a huge difference for laptops compared to peripherals?

I'd like to play games like PUBG at good FPS, and any new games for the next few years. I can spend up to 1700 but of course if there are some options that fit my needs that are cheaper, that would be better. Right now an option that popped out to me was the Asus GM501 (since all the other similar options people said that they had significant issues), I am open to other options.

Also, maybe I should simply get a console like Ps4/Xbox... Anyways, all input is greatly appreciated.

Should I take the Refund and get a new Laptop?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:18 PM PDT

Hi guys, slightly different format to the usual post on this subreddit but hoping this is still the right place to ask.

I recently sent in my Lenovo Yoga 710 (https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Lenovo-YOGA-710-14IKB/p/88YG7000771) to get repaired as the battery gave in and it was still under warranty. I love the laptop, however the company have taken much longer than expected to perform the repairs and they have offered me a full refund of what I payed for the laptop if I didn't want to wait for them to finish (which is still going to take around a week).

I'd be refunded £600, I bought the laptop almost 2 years ago and I'm aware that this was a very good deal at the time which is why I'm sceptical to take it; I'm struggling to find laptops with similar specs at the same price.

My question is, do you think I should take the refund and use it as an opportunity to upgrade? If I take it I'll be without a laptop for a while (although my university has offered to lend me one in the meantime). Black Friday is just around the corner so I might be able to find some good deals but I know the slimmer laptops still can get very pricey, and as the Lenovo Yoga 710 seems to have been discontinued it does seem to be a bit of a risk.

If you think I should take the refund, can you recommend any laptops to keep an eye on that are similar/better than the Yoga 710 at a similar pricetag?

    Thanks for reading.

EDIT: A bit of extra info I copied and pasted from a comment below:

Thanks for the advice. For requirements the Yoga 710 was pretty perfect, the specs were ideal as I'm a Comp Sci student and often have to use somewhat demanding programs (although it's always nice to have an upgrade) and the size was nice as I carry my laptop around a lot.

I do game quite a lot (I've never been able to play high spec games due to low budgets for laptops in the past but would love to be able to) but as I'm at University and travel frequently I prioritise size and convenience over gaming capability. However, having both would definitely be the best case scenario although I'm aware this may not be possible with my budget.

The touch screen was also a nice benefit, although I mostly only used it for games of Hearthstone haha.

Ideally I'd prefer to keep the budget at £600 as I'm a student (and therefore not very financially stable) but I'd be able to throw in an extra £100-£200 if the laptop was worth it.

Need a Laptop for University! Country: Denmark, Budget: <13000 DKK ($1980)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:21 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget = <13000DKK, Planning to buy it from Denmark.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I do not want a 2 in 1 laptop as I already use an iPad for that. Battery Life is very important as I'll be using it the entire day at University, and also looking for Good Specifications.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** The weight and thinness are very important as I'm looking for an Ultra Portable laptop.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** -Although I have never used Mac I'm open to using it, as I hear the MacBooks are amazing machines. I'm fully thorough with Windows and welcome suggestions for Windows laptops. Not interested in Chrome OS and Linux Machines.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13 to 14 inches

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** -I'm not a Gamer and wouldn't be using the Laptop for that Purpose, but I need the Laptop to handle engineering Software. The programs which I'll be using are AutoCAD & MATLAB.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I currently own a Dell Inspiron which is super crap in terms of it's Build Quality. So I'm looking forward to getting a well-built laptop that will last me at least 5 years with good performance.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** After many hours of research, I only see Dell XPS13 9370 Core i5 & MacBook Pro 7th Gen i5 with 256 GB as viable options. Although the MacBook is a good laptop I feel that it's overpriced. the XPS 13 also confuses me as I've come across various subreddits quoting the number of issues people face with it. So I'm Super Confused, to say the least! Please help, and all your suggestions are valued. Cheers!

Edit - Edited to suit the specified format

France/Europe - Looking for ultraportable for light work and sometimes light design / programming.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:05 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    600-800€, France

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 really doesn't matter to me, battery life isn't the most important one (pretty much always near an outlet) : the best value components is gonna take the cake for me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important. I'd carry it around very often, so weight is more important than thinness right now, but would be a nice plus.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows or Mac OS (but yeah, my budget ain't gonna do it for macs lol)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Yes, 13-14 inches is the sweet spot for me.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Often : Google Drive/Microsoft office suite Less often : Some programming (Visual Studio Code) + Linux Subsystem for Windows + Adobe XD or the likes. For heavy stuff, I have my desktop PC no problems.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not intended for gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Using it for typing work and programming, a good keyboard/trackpad is the biggest for me. I do want it to last at least 3 years (this will be a laptop I use to try and get a business up and running). Touch screen is not needed at all, no SD card slot required, finger-print reader is a plus but not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

All in all, this will be a secondary, lightweight laptop that will do light work most of the time but I'd love it to be able to support a light dev environment, and optimized stuff like Adobe XD (which is worlds easier to run than Photoshop or Illustrator btw). For anything heavier, I'll use my desktop PC. I was looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad E485, but if there are any better options or lighter ones, please let me hear it :) Thank you so much!

    Picking a laptop for school/leisure

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:51 PM PDT

I have been looking between a couple laptops the past couple weeks as my current one is crashing a ton.

I've narrowed it down to really looking between either of these two: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp-15-6-touchscreen-laptop-smoke-grey-amd-a9-9425-1tb-hdd-8gb-ram-windows-10/12567412.aspx?

    https://deals.dell.com/en-ca/productdetail/1juo

What I'm looking for in a laptop is one that will be able to run Visual Studio, Android Studio, an Oracle SQL Dev VM, the Eclipse IDE. I would also like to have it to be able to play a couple games; namely League of Legends, Civilization, Elder Scrolls Online.

I'm not too worried when it comes to video games and if it can handle them as I own an xbox and will use that to play anything new and extremely demanding.

I don't want to be spending over 800 and I live in Canada.

Any help with some suggestions, guidance, or if either of these would work well for me would be very appreciated!

    Laptop for College, USA, Seattle

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:50 PM PDT

Hi there, I am searching for a functional lightweight and cheap laptop for college. I am returning to school to become an elementary school teacher, and I do not have a lot of money at the moment. My current laptop was "free" and it hardly works. I will attach the form below, any suggestions is greatly appreciated, looking to spend under 1k, preferably around 4-6 hundred of an option exists.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I need to spend under 1k, and preferably much less. I live in the United States, in the Seattle area.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Battery life is important, and so is performance to an extent. Really I would like something that is flexible a good all around machine.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -Not terribly important. It would be nice to have something thin but I would prefer higher performance.-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -Not really.-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -It would be nice if it ran some games, but even if I played them with the settings turned all the way down. I used to play WoW, maybe something that could run that, but its not required this is mostly going to be a school computer-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, nothing too fancy

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard would be nice. I also prefer to use a mouse so at least one USB port would be nice, or a Bluetooth option for a mouse.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is going to be a school computer primarily. I am very tired of laptops that have technical issues such as slow internet loading, or slow startup speed. I am in my 30's going back to school to get a better job so my wife and I can afford to have children. The less stress a new machine gives me is better. As stated above we don't have a ton of money so I am really looking for a good deal. Being able to run some games on low settings would be cool but not needed. Thank you for your help!

Need a "Rugged" Laptop, that would be ok for gaming.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:27 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase

    $2000, US

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Prefer a traditional laptop, battery life is the priority. Ruggedness above all.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not at all

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Windows, may explore a dual boot into Linux

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    14 - 15 inches

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Mostly going to be used for Misc. radio work, photo editing and gaming would be a nicety to have, but not a necessity.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I do have a couple I regularly play on the desktop, but the ability to play games at medium settings would be nice.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Weatherproofing. This is a laptop that will be outside, but it will ideally be under a tailgate of a SUV or a tent if used outside during inclement weather.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Would like to be able to upgrade RAM & storage, and a removable/replaceable battery would be nice.

    Thinking about a Dell Latitude 5424, a Latitude 5420, or a Lenovo P52s.

I get this is a tall order, but any help would be appreciated.

Laptop for work with minor gaming/editing ~$950

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:32 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
Less than RM4000 in Malaysia, equivalent to anything less than 950 USD
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Battery life doesn't matter much as I have access to the outlet most of the time. Would be a bonus if it can survive spreadsheet work for maybe more than 5 hours.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I do travel with my laptop but only for a short distance, maybe less than 3KG.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Windows. Might play with Linux occasionally.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15" or 14" is fine.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Most of my editing work are not for work but hobbies. I use Adobe After Effects CS6 (1200x768), Photoshop CS6 and mostly online RPG games.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Will be getting Ark: Aberration in the future. I am fine with the lowest graphic settings for any game. High performance > graphics
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
DVD/CD RW a must have for work. I prefer laptops with at least 128GB SSD. Hopefully to get a laptop that has good heat management as I work in a 24/7 summer country. Touch-screen, finger print reader not required.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I work with the laptop alot so any IPS screen with PWM is a no for me. I already have Acer Nitro 5 AN515-42-R8SH in mind, planning to get the Ryzen 5 AMD one as I tend to multitask alot. (Spreadsheet while leaving my game open in the background). I have heard about the good reviews on the Ryzen series processor but I would love to hear it from you fellow reddits. I welcome other brands of laptop within my budget as well.

Advice on a laptop for WoW!

**Total budget and country of purchase:** $700, USA

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money, but would like something sleek

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** As above, I've been using a 13" Mac for years that is perfect in terms of design, unfortunately it's running a bit slow of late, and I'm playing on shite graphics settings

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** OSX would be great, but unlikely to get the performance I want for the price, so probably Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Probably 13", maybe 15"

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Just looking to play World of Warcraft!

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** As above, WoW would love to play on Ultra settings with about 60 FPS

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Not particularly, but the closer the keyboard and trackpad to a Mac the better!

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Appreciate you!!

College Student - School/Work Laptop Recommendation (<$500, Similar to T480s)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:36 PM PDT

Laptop for College, USA, Bay Area

Hi everyone, I'm a college student looking for a functional and cheap laptop. I've just quit my job that provided me with a Lenovo T480s. What I enjoyed about this laptop was its speed and size-it felt optimized for doing work. Now my only alternative is my 10+ year old Samsung Laptop from elementary school, so I'm looking to upgrade to something similar to the T480s, just not as pricey.

I don't play any games or edit videos, and most of my time on my laptop goes into studying that sometimes requires me to access graphic heavy online textbooks, and writing/browsing would be my secondary use.

Looking to spend less than 500 depending on the laptop - preferable with a larger screen.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $500, California, United States
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Long battery life and optimized for work. Don't really care about graphics. I'm looking for a flexible, light machine with a larger screen.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -It'd be nice to have something thin
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows-
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -14"+-
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -No games, maybe some photo editing and music production software?
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard, don't need touch screen, finger-print reader would be nice but not a priority.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is a school/work laptop. I love using the T480s, but it is too pricey, and I don't need a graphic card that's as strong. Thanks in advance for your help!

Laptop for tech work, US, ~$1k–2k

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:18 PM PDT

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Prefer battery life more. Specs enough for heavy browsing & multitasking. If specs go high enough for virtualization, that's a plus. Convertible/detachable is nice, but not required.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Moderately important. I don't want to dread lugging it to meetings, but won't sacrifice ports, keyboard, etc. for a few mm.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Windows. Dual-booting anything else is a plus.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15". I could probably get used to 13" if the display is nice & hi-res enough.
In fact, screen quality should be important. I'll be staring at it many hours every day in varied lighting and multitasking on a laptop.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not for work. Mid-level gaming competence would be a plus (HotS, Rocket League, KSP, e.g.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Gaming not strictly a requirement, but target 1080 @ 60fps, for not-bleeding-edge games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard: More travel and feel than the new MacBooks. Hopefully Esc/Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn/PrtScr keys in a reasonable location. Numpad would be really nice.
Good touchpad: Not sure how to specify that, but hopefully I don't feel compelled to carry a mouse everywhere.
Ports: Prefer USB A & C with DisplayPort/HDMI/thunderbolt video/whatever is current. Part of the job is console connections to various boxen with USB–serial adapters. Also transferring gigabyte files on thumb drives. RJ-45 is a big plus, otherwise will have to carry a dongle.
Port expansion: I want to come and go easily from my desk setup of multiple monitors, wired keyboard & mouse, speakers, multiple USB accessories. Hopefully this can now be done with a USB C hub?
Build quality: MBP-level solid would be nice, but at least no creaky plastic stuff.
Name brand: I gotta convince my boss to buy it. (Acer etc. are fine; just not unknown Chinese stuff.) Good warranty & support too.
Other nice-to-haves: Fingerprint reader, bluetooth, good WiFi, touchscreen/stylus/convertible, large storage, reasonably future proof for 3–5 years. Gaming performance, as described above. Lower end of the price range. Upgradability/repairability.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm a network engineer and this is to be a primary work laptop. I work usually at a desk, but pick up often to visit coworkers, meetings, and data centers.
It will probably serve as my personal machine a lot of the time too, so gaming and storage would be nice, but I can't really specify that as a need.
Pretty much everyone here gets MacBook Pros, but I'm too stuck on Windows. Feel free to pitch me MBP + Win if that works.

Need a new Laptop; please help !!!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:54 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I created an account just for this post because I'm not at all tech savy and would really appreciate the help. I really only use the laptop for work (word docs, excel, a program to access my work computer from home), general web browsing, streaming, music, netflix, etc. Just standard stuff.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max $600 and CAD
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life, or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I dont want a 2 in 1. Good battery is life pretty important (I need at least 4 hours when doing presentations) and most important would be best specs for the money!!
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? In this budget I'll take what I can get, if it's a brick then it's a brick.
    • Which OS? Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6'' ?
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If any games just shitty graphic ones like MTG, starcraft, hearthstone, etc.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard and reliable build quality

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

    Best,

Computer Science Student -- Looking for Something Small and Powerful

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:22 PM PDT

    Hello all,

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Basically I'm a CSCI student, and I've been rocking an i3 Asus Laptop and I fear that Eclipse has taken its toll on this behemoth of a laptop.

Long story short, I'm looking for a smaller laptop (~13.5 in/thin) that has relatively powerful processing power. And by that I mean, relatively powerful compared to what I have right now. I'm fine with an i5, however, I'm curious if an i7 is a. overkill and b. necessary. I see myself using Visual Studio and some work in a VR lab with this laptop so I wonder how much processing power is necessary.

My budget is give or take 800 dollars; I'm willing to move that around for the right laptop. I'm also curious if Black Friday/Cyber Monday would have deals on some of the suggested laptops.

Ideally, I'm looking for a laptop that has these qualities for sure:

    - 8 GB RAM

    - 256 SSD

    - >= i5 CPU

    - Smaller or Thinner Design

Things that are a plus, but totally not 100% necessary are:

    - Touch screen / tablet capabilities

I only write that because I know that a Microsoft Pro / Microsoft SB are pretty common suggestions.

One last note, I've never used a Mac, but I know the OS is basically Unix, so I'm willing to overlook my hatred of Macs if I can find the right deal on it.

Thanks in advance! I hope I don't sound super picky. I'd like to be flexible with my price without going too far over 800, i.e. less than 1000 would still be nice, but again I can move around as necessary. I do want something with the 4 qualities for sure, however.

    You guys are the best!

    USA $1500 max laptop search

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1,500max, USA college student

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Laptop is preferred, good battery life,

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderate, I can handle the weight/size but an easier loaf is always appreciated. My current laptop is a dell studio 17, 17 inch monitor with extended battery the weight is bearable but lighter would be preferred since wherever I go my laptop comes along in my bag.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Larger screens are preferred but not mandatory. I'm more concerned with something that fits my needs. If it's a smaller screen then that's okay.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Pretty basic stuff, definitely need to handle multitasking. Will be running Matlab for my math courses. Video editing is a hobby but the laptop doesn't have to be able to handle it as this is for school.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming unfortunately

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build quality needs to be reliable

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

SSD's are preferred I7 processor is preferred as well!

To cut corners, I don't need the most storage on the laptop. School has unlimited google drive and I have a 2TB external with one TB partitioned for Mac and 1TB for Windows. Planning on getting another specifically for Windows.

I need this thing to go from use on a desk to closed and put into my bag. Left in a car with freezing temps all the way to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. It needs to be able to take a few drops and hits. My laptop lives in my backpack which I live out of. If it breaks during the semester I will be screwed. As a full time student and with a full time job if my laptop breaks I have to withdraw from the semester.

$1,500 may be the max but recommend within all prices please!

In need of a school work laptop

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:53 PM PDT

Hi I am going to buy a new laptop for school and need some advice

Total budget and country of purchase: The budget is 1200€/Finland But it might be possible for me to get a laptop from USA if there are cheaper laptops and the budget is flexible since Black Friday is coming up.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is the most important

How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want it to be a gaming laptop(size and weight) because I will be carrying it around

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I might buy a MacBook pro if it's on black Friday sale but most likely a windows and I might put Linux into it later aswell

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not going to game a lot at least not any big games mostly programming and 3d designing

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I won't have any heavy games

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A touch screen would be nice but it's not necessary, and I will most likely use the Logitech g305 mouse but the keyboard has to be at least descent

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like to have a long lasting laptop and I will carry it around much, but otherwise almost all the things are a little bit flexible

    • Total budget and country of purchase: The Netherlands and the budget is 2000 Euro's

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications as I will need to run a lot of simulations/lines of code.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't have to walk a lot. As long as it's not super heavy it's fine.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux/UNIX/MacOS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15,6

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. N/A

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD is needed.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important. Don't want anything more than 5.5 lbs. 15 inch is pushing it. I'll definitely consider a light 15 inch laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Prefer a 13, but fine with a lighter 15inch laptop

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, a little of photo editing (CaptureOne), a little of gaming, and maybe some programming (Spark, Python, etc).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO, Starcraft. Any FPS where I can manage to play fluidly

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope.

    Research Laptop - 1000~1500 CAD

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I will be buying in Canada, however I can go to the states and purchase there if necessary for a better deal. Budget of $1000~1500 CAD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. >~7 Battery life would be nice (Currently at ~2.5 hours on my Alienware so I can't even imagine)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a factor, I currently have a Alienware M14x from 2012 that is heavy and bulky. I would say that is the max weight/bulkiness I would go, at 6.5lbs and 15.6" horizontal respectively.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I always wanted to learn Linux, so that's possible but for now let's say Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Over 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, however CAD/video editing/photo editing will be done. Also, most likely some simulations.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touch-screen/finger print. I would like minimum HDMI, 3 USB ports and a CD drive would be nice (I can get a optical drive -> USB if not). Reliable build quality is a must, the current laptop I've taken much care of and used mostly every day. 6 years and going, anything like that is highly valuable to me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. There is no rush on the date to purchase. Black friday/cyber monday are coming up so I figured that would be a good time to get the best deal. Or I could wait until boxing day. I know there are fellow redittors that know much more than I do on laptop build quality for the price, that's why I am posting here.

    Need a Laptop for Fiancee

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:12 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US; $1500 but cheaper is better. Ideally, we would like to spend less than $800 (but see explanation below).

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light-weight/portability is probably highest priority.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably 13.3" (given portability/battery life demands)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a touch screen. In addition, given the battery demands, I imagine 1920*1080 resolution is most appropriate?

Tendency to leave many tabs open so we will probably want more memory.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Hi all! Looking for a laptop for the fiancee.

Light-weight/portability is probably highest priority, with battery-life a close second. Laptop will mostly be used for word processing and emails (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), internet browsing, Netflix and other simple media (YouTube, HBO Go, music, etc.), and overall general computer use. Note that she has a tendency to leave tons of tabs open so we will probably want something with more memory.

Budget is theoretically unlimited but cheaper is better. However, value and bang for buck are much more important to us than the actual dollar value of the budget. We don't need this immediately and can probably wait for BF deals to pop up.
