    Is my device infected?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:48 PM PDT

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S7 and I think I may have malware. I can barely browse for a whole minute or two without being redirected to some scam site telling me I've won the new iPhone. I've noticed this is especially a bad problem on any Wikia made sites. How can I fix this?

Is it my phone or something else?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:05 PM PDT

Firstly, my apologies if this doesn't belong here and also I'm on mobile so sorry for the formatting. Okay so I have an LG G5 and I'm with Koodo/Telus. Whenever I am at work my phone completely loses service and says "No Sim." I have to restart my phone when I'm off the property to get it working again. That's the first issue. The second issue is whenever I call my work, doesn't matter which extension, the person on the other side says I am cutting in and out(I never get this when I call anyone else). It's extremely annoying and I've asked coworkers and apparently I am the only one who experiences these problems, so is it my phone? My carrier? What's going on and can I do anything to fix it?

Is it safe to flash firmware that is from another country?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:16 PM PDT

Hi, I have Samsung Galaxy J5 2017, (SM-J530F) and because here in Serbia we still don't have an oreo update, what would happen if I installed the 8.1.0 firmware from Poland or UK or some other countries with Odin? I wanna take the risk, but I'm REALLY not in the situation to buy another phone if something happens.

EDIT: Well, I am happy to say that I am typing this from my newly installed oreo firmware. I took the risk and it runs great.

After update, my phone keeps "downloading" images

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:27 PM PDT

After my phone updated to Android 8.0, it keeps downloading random .jpeg files with random alphanumeric names. This lags out the phone, making it practically unusable. I disconnected from wi-fi and data then cleared the recovery cache in recovery mode but the problem still persists. I did everything a 2014 post did for a similar issue but still nothing. Thanks.

Pocophone F1, Bluetooth connection, audio only plays on phone

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:14 AM PDT

I recently got a pocophone F1, and so far have been unable to play music over Bluetooth. I can pair my device, I can control the media playback with the speaker controls, and the two cars I tried can display the song information. It's just that the music only plays on my phone, never on the Bluetooth device.

I tried pairing and unpairing, changing the Bluetooth settings (dis- and reallow media audio over bluetooth) and resetting bluetooth settings. And now I'm out of ideas.

    Thanks for your help!

Did my phone just get hacked??

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:44 PM PDT

I believe my phone just got hacked to be remotely controlled.

I had my phone on the side and went for it. The screen was not off like usual. It was instead on the enter passcode screen and one digit out of four was typed in already. The screen had no response, meaning that it was obvious that the processor was maxed out/laggy. I managed to unlock it with my fingerprint, phone was still barely responding. Then it went to the familiar move-around-apps screen and an app moved from across the screen to change position. I didn't touch the screen or do any of that. Felt like 2 ppl (including me) struggling to control a laggy OS. My immediate assumption was that it got hacked, therefore all that behavior. I tried to restart it by holding down the power button. The phone responded to that command instantly (animations were smooth on that screen) but it was too laggy and wasnt registering the restart i was pressing on my screen. I proceeded to press the combo of buttons that turn off the phone. All is good and working as intended after the reboot.

Am i crazy? WTF just happened? Should i be paranoid about the safety of my device now? What do i do after that? I am an "ädvanced" user but i don't have any clue on what to do about that and i'm not in the mood to reformat/restore my phone again. HELP

pixel's camera functions carried to other android phones

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:47 PM PDT

I'm a huge huge fan of the pixel 3 xl, with 4gb of ram, I feel some times its not enough....With the new OP6T or even the Huawei,I feel more compelled to get them.

I'm aware that people can install 3rd party software to their phones, and in this case, the stock google camera can be installed into other makers' phones.

With the new night vision camera algorithms, if I were to install that very APK to say.... the new OP6T, are the algo functions carried over??

    thanks

ps. I've been browsing various developer sites (the general authority is this i believe: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/_ which mod should I be aiming for? What are the differences?

I use the OP5T and referring to the latest mod for OP5T ( Urnyx05-v5.0.apk ) the HDR-on comes out pink!?

    thanks

Questions re: troubleshooting data w/ my carrier

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 10:30 PM PDT

    Hey guys.

So, I'm not much of a phone person (much prefer computers to phones), but I got an android smartphone w/ a good amount of data to use as backup internet. Data is my big need, the voice and texting is for occasional use.

Anyway, I get set up with T-Mobile on a plan with 20gb data that's ok for tethering. Voice/texting/data worked fine in store. I leave, pull up some webpages while eating, and data still works fine. As I finish eating, I play around with turning tethering on, and just leave it on as I go home. It's password-protected, so why not?

When I get home, data refuses to work. I got 15 mb use out of my 20 gb tethering allotment!

So I got in touch with T-Mobile, and we tried some stuff, and nothing. I'm going to call them tomorrow for a second round of troubleshooting, but I was thinking maybe someone here can give me some pointers if I failed to try something.

Here's what I did (some of it more than once at their request):

    • Phone factory reset (new phone, no loss to do this immediately)
    • Edited the APN stuff several times in various configs, including t-mobile's page outlining exactly what it should be. No difference.
    • Turned it off for 2 minutes after updating APN. No dice.
    • Turned it off for 2 hours after updating APN. Still no dice.
    • Tried it outside several blocks away. Nada.
    • Put in a Cricket sim to test if it was just my phone, but data worked fine with them, so it really is a carrier thing. Alas, Cricket doesn't allow the mobile hotspot feature for my phone, so I can't tether with them. (Wasted $60 bucks on them before realizing I wasn't "allowed" the tethering upgrade for my model.)
    • Put phone into airplane mode for a bit. Nothing.
    • Changed from LTE to 3G to see if it had to do with that. I get a brief moment where it looks like it's going to let me have data, then the x of no data appears for 3G.

My phone is the moto x4 android one version. Model XT1900-1. (Yeah, I got it in the hopes of someday using Google's Project Fi, but I can't do that currently, thus T-Mobile.)

My question to you android folks is...what did I forget to troubleshoot in Android that might fix my data issue? Or rather, what am I too much of a newb with phones to know to even try? I know more about Windows and web pages than phones.

T-mobile said something about a data provision mismatch, and that a reboot should fix it. Obviously that didn't do anything for me, even if it should have.

Is there something I can poke on my end to force it to sync up with T-mobile with the right provisioning? Or force it to completely nuke whatever settings my silly little phone is hanging onto?

Or is it likely entirely something fucked up on their end, or me being blacklisted by some bot on their end by trying to tether on my plan?

Do you think the XT-1900-1 being an obscure model (compared to the non-Android One ediction) might cause their network to have issues with it?

Would they have a whitelist of phone models "allowed" to tether, and mine simply might not be on it since users with my model probably mostly use Project Fi as their carriers instead of T-mobile?

    Thanks for the guidance.

    ADB - No Devices Listed

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 10:20 PM PDT

So, I've actually had this problem before, but failed to note down what I did (on multiple occasions... :-l).

I have been making the switch from the moto stock to Lineage OS. I had it working before, but, upon finding that fdroid wouldn't find the index file of repositories, I figured I'd just try reinstalling everything from scratch, before asking for support (and switching to Lineage for MicroG).

Currently, I don't have an OS. So I cannot go to make sure that USB debugging etc. is on (or, at least, i don't know how - I don't know if wiping resets this?). I have TWRP recovery on there. In Device Manager, there are two devices listed under Android Device, one only allows Mot Composite ABD, the other.. well, it allows both this, and otehr options, but when I had it working before it was set to Android Composite ADB Interface (now, it also gives an Error 10 device cannot start when trying to reinstall - but this may or may not be relevant, as it may or may not have showed regardless of whether I had it working before).

Any advice/methods I haven't tried appreciated. Thank you. Also, if there's any known errors with fdroid repos lately? It gave errors about the index file and null replacement.

LG K20 Fingerprint Issue from Custom ROM to Stock ROM

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:51 PM PDT

So, I'm coming from the Lineage OS / IncipientOS custom ROM's on the LG K20 (MP260/TP260). Once flashed via LG UP I can register the fingerprints, once I try and use it to unlock the phone it says "unable to use fingerprint at this time." It continues to do so any time I try using it. I have tried multiple versions of the stock ROM to get around this. Is there any resolve? I can't find any information anywhere. Although others have reported the same issue in the telegram chat for the builds. Please help!

    Battery Optimization on Pie

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:48 PM PDT

So does anyone else have an issue with the damn battery optimization on Android Pie? I only ask because since I've upgraded I've had stupid amounts of problems getting notifications on time.

I've disabled everything I can find in the menu about optimizing battery and have manually gone through and disabled battery optimizations for EVERY available application possible including the OS and it's main packages and I still can't get anything remotely on time. I'm not getting O365 e-mails on time, no telegram on time, no slack nothing, Even my tracking program(sylectus) constantly fails to update location. The phone as a phone is effectively useless because of this. Is anyone else running into this problem, and if so, any solutions?

Phone sometimes can't play exported H.264 videos

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:41 PM PDT

I edited video a lot for Instagram and I used Adobe products the entire time. The phone I'm using at the moment is Galaxy S7 Edge Exynos. I've never encounter this problem before, or from the entire last year. It's only after I updated the phone to Oreo 8.0 that I sometimes come across this problem.

Whenever I tried to play some of the exported H.264 video on my phone, it just say "Can't play video. Video codec not supported". Gallery just refused to play the video, but still output the audio.

I said 'some' because most other videos, exported with the same settings, can be played fine. I've also tried to play that same video on my friend's OnePlus 6 and the result are the same, can't be played.

Yes, I can play the video if I use third party video player such as MX Player or VLC, but that doesn't help because I can't post any video to instagram if I can't open it in the native video player.

The solution I'm using right now is to just export it using H.265 instead, and it worked. But I still would like to know why it happened, does android have some weird way to play some video codec or something? Why only some video can be played while others can't, even with the same exact export settings?

I've searched Google for this problem, and it seems I'm not the only one having this problem as seen here and here. I've exported countless other video with the same exact settings throughout the year, the only changing variable is android version. The setting for the exported video is:

    • H.264
    • VBR 1-Pass
    • Level 4.2
    • Target Bitrate : 10
    • Use maximum Depth Render Quality
    • Render at maximum Depth

If this question are better suited to other sub, let me know, I'll cross-post it, and thank you.

    Apps can't read from gallery

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:09 PM PDT

    Phone: LGV20

So any app on my phone that can take pictures from my gallery and upload them doesn't read that the gallery exists, however I can upload one picture at a time via share in the gallery itself, but any more than that wont work. For example, if I open snap chat and try to upload a photo it'll crash, and facebook just says no photos from gallery. Any word on how to fix this?

    S7 Edge completely dead

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:06 PM PDT

Hi, I have a Samsung s7 edge and about a month ago, it started having issues. My phone would randomly get a thin grey bar at the bottom and freeze, for example here, and restart. It would restart 5 or 6 times over. Eventually, it would restart every 5-10 seconds. There wasn't enough time to factory reset before shutdown, and now it won't turn on at all. Completely unresponsive. What can I do?

Why does my Google app keep getting worse and worse?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:34 PM PDT

Until late last year it worked, well... like you'd expect. I said "okay Google" and it'd pop up with the voice prompt.

Then sometime at the end of 2017/beginning of 2018, that pop-up animation changed completely. It also became unbearably slow and would usually result in something like "Okay Google................... OKAY GOOG- oh yeah, now you finally fucking work- no, don't search for that, you piece of shit." And so forth.

Just recently I updated again and "okay Google" simply dims the screen and prompts the text "Say Okay Google". What? Surely this can't be the intended behavior of the application, right?

I deleted that update and now it's working just as well as it ever did. But I just don't understand how a piece of software that worked absolutely flawlessly keeps getting worse in completely nonsensical ways.

Phones lost a year or so ago were recently synced?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:29 PM PDT

So I was just curious and checked the locate my phone thing on google. It says that both of my phones were last sync to my email early this year. I had two on the account but without thinking signed out of one of them and no longer have access to the sync date. But I believe they were both synced to my gmail account within the same month of this year. I don't have the best memory, but I'm 99% certain I lost them at least a year ago if not more. Any explanation for this, should I be worried?

Did Messages for Web get rid of the red dot favicon indicator?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:28 PM PDT

Since Messages for Web launched, I've kept a pinned tab for texting, so i just see the icon. It used to have a red dot that would appear whenever a new message came in, but recently it seems to not be showing that any more so I never get a visual indicator of when I have a new text. If the tab isn't pinned, you can see the (1) or whatever in the tab title which shows you have a message, but I can't see that message when the tab is pinned (or if you have so many tabs that the titles are covered).

Samsung Galaxy S5 G900V fails to restore to stock firmware

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:07 PM PDT

I'm at a standstill. My G900V will not restore to any firmware I throw at it. I even plugged it into the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant to grab the ALL_VZW_G900VVRU2DQL1_G900VVZW2DQL1_CL8025411_QB16 020535_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 and that too fails at writing aboot.mbn.

I have the phone plugged into ODIN (latest version) and have tried the stock VZW firmware files for 6.0.1, and only one got past aboot, but it failed at modem.bin. DQB2 got me the closest out of all of the 6.0.1 files (the phone ran 6.0.1, but I do not know which exact build). I tried removing the modem.bin from the tar, and it then failed at the system.img.ext4. I tried PIT, and that didn't do anything either.

Here is where I am right now: The phone shows the S5 logo with an unlocked lock and the word "Custom" underneath. This happened after trying to flash the ALL_VZW md5. Sometimes it hangs at the boot screen, sometimes it gives me a secure check fail for the kernel and tells me to plug it into the Verizon SUA again. The phone does not boot into recovery. (secure check fail for recovery too). Download mode is the only thing that works. Any idea where to even begin with this? The phone stopped working with no trigger, and I'm trying to see what I can do to fix it. Is there any way to just force the ROM to install?

Phone won't turn on; battery icon flashing

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:01 AM PDT

So I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S6 last night, but not from a great height or anything so no damage to the cosmetics. But the phone wouldn't come on, so I figured I'd sort it the next day.

Charged it all night but no change. Just the battery icon flashing every couple of seconds. The red battery indicator light doesn't come on.

Any responsiveness is only available if it is plugged in to the charger.

Tried different cables, adapters, sockets = nothing.
    Power button = nothing.
Power + home button = nothing.
Power + down volume = nothing.
Power + up volume = nothing.

Power + down volume + home = blue screen. No home button option
Hitting restart flashes the S6 loading screen as if it's about to come on, cuts to black then the battery icon begins flashing again.
The other option takes me to this download screen

Power + up volume + home = Loading screen then begins to flash loading screen. Even when unplugged & plugged back in and after doing other stuff... it's completely replaced the battery icon now.
Didn't even get to the options page.

    What can I do?

Do Bluetooth 5.0 earphones get better latency (less lag/delay) on BT 5.0 phones VS BT 4.2 phones?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:23 PM PDT

    I got a pair of Jabra Elite 65t 's (Bluetooth 5.0) and a Huawei Mate 10 Pro (Bluetooth 4.2).
There is a bit of delay in realtime audio (games, and videos/apps that do not artificially compensate for lag).
Even though it is the best I could find for "truly wireless" earphones (the least amount of lag among all buying options).

Will switching to a Bluetooth 5.0 phone (Note 9, GS9, Mate 20 Pro etc) while using the same earphones make delay/lag shorter?

BTW I am not really focusing on the improved distance or connection stability of BT 5.0, I just want faster response audio for gaming etc while using the BT earphones.
